Kendrick won a Pulitzer price for literature (or poetry or both) with this album. The only music of any genre in history to ever win a Pulitzer price, ever. None before, none after and none ever will. It was certainly unique for a rapper or any musician to win an international award for literature and poetry. He is undoubtedly the best rap artist and rapper, unafraid to call out the black community and the pervasive racism and injustice of the system. That’s why he is often maligned by his own community and applauded by others who sees no colour and thus able to appreciate the truthfulness and unbiased sincerity of his message. Honestly, you never get to appreciate any of Kendrick’s albums on first listening and you need to be able to understand that he’s rhymes are lit but not easily understood from easy listening. You need to be intentional and smart enough to appreciate the nuances and subtlety of his songs. He is a generational talent.
@@PICKLEEEJUICE not surprised about that. A Pulitzer price is more for achievements in the field of education, especially literature, writing or journalism, drama. It is probably the most coveted awards in these fields of academia. The Oscars meanwhile is basically a Film and Cinematic Award. If you ask me personally, i think the Pulitzer award is much more valuable. Maybe that’s why Kendrick’s music has been added to the educational curriculum in some universities? I would think so

I remember this album dropping while I was at Coachella in 2017 & Kendrick was headlining that weekend. Everybody in the campgrounds blasting the album after it’d just dropped.. trying to learn every word. Somehow found myself at the rail right in front of Kung-Fu Kenny himself. One of the greatest nights of my life & such a special album to me.
I was at weekend two for this and even then you could tell maybe not everyone had fully heard the album or had known all the lyrics yet but it was still HYPE. He’s gotta come back for Coachella 2023🙏🏻
That was my very first Coachella! It holds such a special place in my heart. Saw him do Family Ties with Keem W2 and crowd was INSAAAAANE, I hope he comes back to headline next year.
Personally my least favourite kendrick album, by quite a bit. I actually find it to be kinda grossly overrated. That said, kendrick’s talent is undeniable and he really is one of the all time best
This album was a moment in history. I was living in New Orleans, and just remember how impactful it was, it was everywhere. I haven't experienced that with any other artist.
What I like about LUST. is the inflections of male vs. female, the drums are incredible too & all-round a really trippy, catchy track! In an old relationship I was in, whenever my ex said "I need some water", I'd sing the chorus of this song hahaha
I like that the drums build up from being completely reversed at the start to being the right way round at the end. I think it adds to the vibe of the song
You for sure need to show him Untitled Unmastered. I’m sure he’d love the production of the TPAB “throw aways.” For it being just an 8 song demo, it’s soooo crisp and better than most artist’s albums
seeing how choked up your dad gets at some of these songs is so fun to watch. seeing someone experience this for the first time is like experiencing it for the first time again. ❣️ would love to see him react to food and liquor!
So true. I was 19 when it dropped and thought it was fire but not as good as good kid maad city. Now it's probably my favourite album of all time together with Rodeo.
@@Gamerlordpro I'm currently 19 and I didn't liked Damn. that much at first (GKMC is my favourite album of all time 😅) but I listened to it more and now I appreciate it a lot, a great album, but still currently not on my personal top 3 (1. GKMC 2. 2014FHD 3. MBDTF).
I see a lot of people saying that this is Kendrick's worst album, you can see that the guy is good, when his worst album is better than 90% of other artists' albums
Connor and Kevin, I just wanna let you know how much of a positive impact you’re having on me with your channel . Lost my dad back in September of 2021 and we had a similar musical relationship, always showing eachother new music (mostly hip hop ) and enjoying it together. Your videos kind of help me relive that bond we had in a way and I’ve just been binging the past few days man Yall are carrying RUclips right now forreal ,the chemistry between you two brings me joy and it’s truly amazing to watch. Keep up the great work and much love 💯🙌🏽
Should definitely react to Section 80 before his new album comes out. Great instrumentals and some great concepts/lyrics. One of my favourites of his after TPAB. Great reaction as always!
I remember when DAMN came out. I got home, lied down in my bed, put it on and listened to it TWICE uninterrupted, no phone, nothing. Such a great album!
DAMN is my favourite Kendrick Album, and Ik it's a hot take but DAMN for me has it all, replayability, Aggressive Rap, Chill Songs, Deep Lyrics and probably has one of the greatest Album Ender with DUCKWORTH.
It’s not a hot take at all my friend. Kendrick even said it himself that DAMN. is really a culmination of everything he’s learned from his previous albums packed into one.
TPAB was, and is, my favourite hip-hop album of this generation. But the FIRST time I heard "DNA" I literally ran around my apartment yelling and going crazy
I'ev always taken FEEL to be an allusion to a soul struggling to self-soothe/someone sitting through mental health treatment. With the repeated "I feel..." statements, the rapid swings in musical/vocal intensity, and the way Kendrick keeps coming back to the same sticking point ("a'int nobody praying for me"), it gives this vibe of listening to someone who is at their limit venting to a therapist.
You didn’t mention that this album can be played in reverse order and still make sense A couple months after this came out - Kendrick actually released another version with a reverse track list 👌🏾
I can't wait not only to experience Mr. Morale and the Big Steppers, but to watch you two experience it. Especially after having experienced so many kendrick albums as if they were new in the past couple years, it's going to be a great video like this one has been.
Kendrick went for a more experimental mainstream sound with this album, so maybe that's why people don't give this album enough credit. But his 3 album run is undeniable and I know his next album will be another phenomenal project
This album, while I still believe the other albums are better, is the most nostalgic to me. It’s the only one I remember dropping and feeling the anticipation build up. I was like 14 when it first released. Edit: Also so glad you loved FEEL. it’s so good, a top Kendrick song for me
it’s been a pleasure watching kevin become more and more versed with hip hop and seeing how open minded and respectful he is towards the artists, music and connor! hope you keep listening to music together long after making videos
you guys should do ‘awaken my love’ by Childish Gambino, it’s creative, soulful, with great instrumentals and singing. Another interesting one would be Taboo or Melt my eyez by Denzel Curry.
You should tell your dad about the deluxe edition, how the whole album is meant to be heard backwards!!!! He is gonna lose his mind!! Love you guys good work!!
@@nolanfarrell1767 there were rumors right after the release of DAMN that another Kendrick album was coming soon, sorta surprise release and entire new album. Timed had passed and the hype was dying down, until someone had a theory. That DAMN was also an album you could play in backwards order and it was still narratively correct. Thus, that was the second album.
Kendrick is an artist who I knew of mainly from the black Panther soundtrack and just heading his radio singles, and you guys doing this album is what finally made me say “fuck it” and did an entire dive into his discography and man, was I ROBBING myself. Thanks for the push.
I was 18 when I found Kendrick, I’m 29 now. My girlfriend and I watch your videos together, we laugh and sing along. This is really the perfect time to drop this reaction with the hype for the new album. A concatenation of some of my favorite things all at once.
Watching you guys reminds me of my childhood. I grew up adoring music at my dad's feet. It was always this thing *we* shared. I always loved when I could give him new music. Thank you! This is a gift. Also i hope dad gets to give Conner a few albums, but given how the videos I've watched, I am pretty sure he already did. Conner doesn't love music like this without being born into it. Just like I was.
I remember thinking the album was just okay years ago and not really liking songs like yah, xxx, loyalty, god that much but nowadays I'm realizing those song are actually fire and I can say now after all those years its absolutely great to a classic album.
Guys, straight up, y'all represent something so pure that extends beyond sharing music. Such a dope connection you're making with all of us and each other. This shit so dope. Love.
The little laugh Conner had at the beat drop is everything. He just knew what was coming and couldn’t help himself lol. I do that a lot with Kendrick, he’s so good sometimes all you can do is shake your head even on the 100th listen
33:06 wow bro kendrick is so creative i just realized how he articulated the beat with title of the song “LUST” he kept teasing the beat drop knowing we all would want it to just ride out. just like how he wants to tease the women by saying “let me put the head in”. crazy man. LUST for the beat
Hi, music business student here! I found your talk about radio interesting & I thought I'd chime in. Radio is far less important now, still kinda important but the people who listen to radio are just spoonfed anything and don't really care what is on there so long as it's "radio friendly". The reason it's good that these songs are shorter is for streaming & playlists. We have a low-attention span nowadays and not many people will be happy with a song that is over 6 minutes really, because it "ruins the playlist". Kendricks old albums were made mostly for vinyl play, so a 12 minute song works for that because it is essentially one side of a vinyl.
This album not only received a Grammy for best rap album but it also received a Pulitzer price . The significance it has cemented for Black people, the culture, and for generations to come is not enough to say how important this album is ❤ love the reaction your dad is awesome , please react to Kali Uchis anything really but if I had to choose I think your dad would gravitate towards Red Moon in Venus more ❤
CAN'T WAIT FOR THAT "REASONABLE DOUBT" REACTION! SIDE NOTE: ONE OF THE MAJOR PRODUCERS ON THIS CLASSIC ALBUM (SKI BEATS), IS FROM MY HOMETOWN- GREENSBORO, NORTH CAROLINA.✌🏾
My 55 year old dad just randomly yells "bitch im the sandman!" And my "left stroke just went viral" all the time lol. The odd time he will come at me with the "holla bitch". Bonding with a parent over music is great and very special. He raised me on metal and rock from the 70s-80s and its my favorite music still.
I'm rewatching this video after like a year at 30:44 I love how much attention dad pays. The cut off and drop teases on LUST are the best part it's so epic dad noticed how it went in and out. Awesome job.
I can’t believe it wasn’t clarified to Kevin at the end that the last sound was the entire album being played backwards when he was trying to decipher the meaning! Needed to see his reaction to realizing that
Man Connor I have to give kudos to the editing. You hit all my favourite parts in the songs. It is essential to cut parts of the tracks to speed up the video but you do it very well and hit all the key parts which must be difficult to juggle Love you guys and thanks for doing one of my favourite albums. Can’t wait Kung-Fu Kenny’s return. He’s to the king

Amazing album, I remember honestly kind of sleeping on it when it first came out, basically only listened to Love and that’s it. Years later I actually gave it a real listen and it nearly beats out TPAB for me. Feel is my favorite track, and a big part of my soundtrack for the last two years of civil unrest and pandemic here in the US.
29:00 To that point, radio may be half dead but Spotify took its place, and the ability to create playlists not only kept short songs around but even made them shorter. A lot of artists have been pushing for scattered single releases instead of full projects, and mixtapes with extremely short songs. Look at Whole Lotta Red, the longest song is exactly radio length, half don't crack 1 minute. You get pushed by the algorithm into more mixes and people are more likely to put you on their playlist instead of 10 minute songs so you get wayyy more plays.
this effect is only exaggerated by social media, especially the success of tiktok. shorter is so much easier to push for repetitive and quick media. so radio may be dead but the short song is very much alive
FEAR is an underrated song on this album and in his discography, it's incredible and every Kendrick fan has to give it a listen at least once, what a journey
This album is very cohesive! There’s a story being told from beginning to end. There’s a season on the Dissect podcast where a guy breaks down the samples and beats which were very specific to the lyrics which were also very specific. It’s a good listen, check it out when you get a chance!!

@@coolpandas8375 by the way Eminem’s Stan is in on the A level English literature Curriculum in the UK
I’m not making any comparison either, both are great, but no other solo rapper has won a Oscar for the “best original song”
Ey both geniuses but in my opinion Eminem is a bit better
I remember this album dropping while I was at Coachella in 2017 & Kendrick was headlining that weekend. Everybody in the campgrounds blasting the album after it’d just dropped.. trying to learn every word. Somehow found myself at the rail right in front of Kung-Fu Kenny himself. One of the greatest nights of my life & such a special album to me.
I was at weekend two for this and even then you could tell maybe not everyone had fully heard the album or had known all the lyrics yet but it was still HYPE. He’s gotta come back for Coachella 2023🙏🏻
@@athenakay Awesome.. I truly hope he does, going regardless.
That was my very first Coachella! It holds such a special place in my heart. Saw him do Family Ties with Keem W2 and crowd was INSAAAAANE, I hope he comes back to headline next year.

People forget how amazing of an album DAMN is cause it's always outshined by GKMC and TPAB. Personally my favorite Kendrick album. Loved the reaction!
That’s what makes Kendrick special, all of his albums are so good and unique it’s hard to pick a favorite, each album just has its own mood and tone
Same! My favourite!
I prefer DAMN over TPAB

Personally my least favourite kendrick album, by quite a bit. I actually find it to be kinda grossly overrated. That said, kendrick’s talent is undeniable and he really is one of the all time best
This album was a moment in history. I was living in New Orleans, and just remember how impactful it was, it was everywhere. I haven't experienced that with any other artist.
Sure is a classic
bro when this album dropped you couldn't go anywhere near the city without hearing a track XD
@@beatmeattt Lol by the night of the first day it was out I felt like it had been out months already.
DNA making you teary eyed on first listen means you’re a true hip hop fan.
"Let me put the head in" makes me uncomfortable tho.

FEEL. is one of my favorite tracks of all time. Truly a masterpiece
This is a timeless album. It hits different the older you get.
It hits different once you know the full story
i really want a playlist video from your dad, where he shows his favorites songs from all the albuns he listened with us...
Yeah a Kevin hip hop playlist on Spotify would be great

I remember when DAMN came out. I got home, lied down in my bed, put it on and listened to it TWICE uninterrupted, no phone, nothing. Such a great album!
DAMN is my favourite Kendrick Album, and Ik it's a hot take but DAMN for me has it all, replayability, Aggressive Rap, Chill Songs, Deep Lyrics and probably has one of the greatest Album Ender with DUCKWORTH.
W for having an opinion
Well I respect your opinion, all of Kendrick’s albums have these lol
It’s not a hot take at all my friend. Kendrick even said it himself that DAMN. is really a culmination of everything he’s learned from his previous albums packed into one.
TPAB was, and is, my favourite hip-hop album of this generation. But the FIRST time I heard "DNA" I literally ran around my apartment yelling and going crazy
Exact same but this album has aged like a fine wine
I remember junior year of hs this album was everywhere lol
I think TPAB is his best album and has his best songs, but the beat switch on DNA is sonic gold.
This album is just so good even after 5 years. It's got me through some hard and I mean really hard times. Especially FEAR.
I'ev always taken FEEL to be an allusion to a soul struggling to self-soothe/someone sitting through mental health treatment. With the repeated "I feel..." statements, the rapid swings in musical/vocal intensity, and the way Kendrick keeps coming back to the same sticking point ("a'int nobody praying for me"), it gives this vibe of listening to someone who is at their limit venting to a therapist.
bro that song transformed me
You can see the impact of “feel” making him compare Kendrick to Whitney is iconic and definitely giving props where it’s due. Legends in the making!
And Kendrick loves Whitney too. He's on his way to immortality too.
Just laughed out loud at the fact that that Kendrick briefly made Kevin cry simply because of how good he is lmaooo you guys are awesome
You didn’t mention that this album can be played in reverse order and still make sense

I LOVE Connor's fit in this video, there's something about it, very cohesive.
fr, nobody ever mentions how fire my guy's fits are
Connor drip is so clean
This album not only received a Grammy for best rap album but it also received a Pulitzer price . The significance it has cemented for Black people, the culture, and for generations to come is not enough to say how important this album is ❤ love the reaction your dad is awesome , please react to Kali Uchis anything really but if I had to choose I think your dad would gravitate towards Red Moon in Venus more ❤

My 55 year old dad just randomly yells "bitch im the sandman!" And my "left stroke just went viral" all the time lol. The odd time he will come at me with the "holla bitch".
Fr probably the best on the album and at least top 15 Kendrick
IVE BEEN WAITING SO LONG FOR THIS
