BTG...love yall. Great work as usual🦾. Only thing u missed is pointing out the fact (imo lol) that this album is basically a parody of the state of the game at the time. Everyone wanted K Dot to stay away from his signature sound. He proved that he could make an album to please the dummies that are hypnotized by sounds and still get his msgs across. Pure genius🦾

See, I think we as a people like watching reaction videos and actually get a feel good vibe from them because we see something that is actually lightning in a bottle during our lifetime, those moments where we discover something we are going to end up loving. Sometimes we see that happening on reaction videos, we see the development on the view, the deep interest. It is truly a beautiful thing.

BLOOD is also a callback to How Much A Dollar Cost. When he sees the blind woman, he remembers the lesson he learned in HMADC and defies his cautious instincts, only to lose his life over it. This sets up the depression and the feeling of being lost and forsaken by God (ain’t nobody prayin for me) that stays across the whole album.

As for “what happens on earth stays on earth,” I interpret it as Kendrick talking to himself trying to deal with how small he is compared to the universe, telling himself to zoom in for a sec n focus on what’s in front of him. The whole album is about grappling with simultaneously feeling like the whole world is out to get you and yet you’re insignificant. That duality of perspective is in the title too, feeling damned ofc but also understanding that the world is so big there’s nothing you can say but DAMN

Also “BLOOD.” is a reference to the Bloods. Which is what all of Kendrick’s friends are. The “blind lady” that needs his help is the gang. All she wants is his life. BLOOD. ties back to DUCKWORTH. & it basically explains what would would’ve happened had his father died. He would’ve ended up in the gang life. “….while i grew up without a father & die in a gunfight” followed by the immediate rewind back to BLOOD. was a perfect tie in.

This album is EXTREMELY deep. Considering this was the album that won Kendrick the Pulitzer prize. The album has one meaning going forward and a different one going backward. Going forward, Kendrick is starting out forsaken by god and is a sinner. that's why the first half of the album has all of the aggressive songs. Towards the end, he finds god and changes his life because he has his father in his life.
If you listen to it backwards, Kendricks dad is killed in the KFC robbery and Kendrick now has to grow up without a father and the festering anger that he has for him being murdered. At the beginning, he tries to find peace through god, but the pain is too much, and he falls into the cycle of the hood and becomes violent. In the end, the blind lady (in my opinion) represents either god or the devil, and they are there to take Kendrick from this world.
This is all my opinion, but thats kind of what i got from listening forward and backward

This is completely true and I was looking for someone in the comments to talk about this. A week after DAMN. was released (I think) Kendrick released a collectors edition of the album .NMAD with the same songs just in reverse order. You can confirm it also in the album cover for this collectors edition where Kendrick's in a "dark side" in front of a black wall with a wicked and daring expression in his face. A lot to think about and thanks for commenting this!

Kendrick has said the album is supposed to be played in reverse order so in that case, its like everything he's done up to blood, is the cause of his death. Succumbing to lust, pride and his soulful desires, eventually leading to him being killed unexpectedly. I can see the blind woman representing judgement, exacting the will of God without bias, but punishing him rightfully for his wrongs, but thats just one interpretation of many. Amazing album

I remember listening to a podcast that dissects albums. They dissected "YAH" and what I found was super cool is "YAH" is short for "Yahweh". The radar is buzzin' like Kendrick is talking to God over a radio frequency. When Kendrick goes to the line "But it's money to get, bitches to hit, yah
Zeroes to flip, temptation is, yah
First on my list, I can't resist, yah", Kendrick has all of these evil thoughts like "hitting bitches", "temptation", etc. but at the end of all of those lines "YAH" comes in like God is trying to communicate through all the wickedness. Found that kinda cool.

Yah is actually God so u can't really speak both names as two different identities 💯 they're just two different names for two different religions but they're both the same exact person!!!!!! Yet it's actually blasphemous to call either of them by both names!!!! Atleast to the folks that read from the actual Torah & not a "Bible" apperently 💯

The lines “Is it wickedness? Is it weakness?” basically make this album into a choose your own story type of album and are actually the most important lines of the entire album. Every song on the album can fall under either wickedness or weakness and they alternate, for example, BLOOD. is weakness because obviously kendrick dies in the song and the song also has a softer tone. DNA. would be wickedness because of how aggressive and boastful the song is. When you play the album in order, kendrick eventually follows the path of “weakness” and finds god. Once you play it in reverse, the entire story is flipped and he eventually goes down the path of “wickedness” and dies in BLOOD. because of it. It could also be perceived as if playing the album in reverse tells the story of kendrick if anthony killed ducky. Hopefully i explained it well enough this is all from my memory of an analysis i watched on DAMN.

For example, GKMC throws me back to freshman year of high school, this throws me back to summer 2017, and all of these bring back the memories of those times in my life. Seeing you and your father react to these Kendrick albums has been awesome to watch and I love the relationship you both share. This album is wonderful and just as ripe for dissection as TPAB!!! Kendrick said this album is his personal favorite that he's done and I can see why. An important factor my girlfriend pointed out to me with DAMN was that the album had a non-linear narrative, as opposed to TPAB which tells one consecutive story. (With occasional callback and narrative parallels) What my gf explained to me was that basically, BLOOD and DUCKWORTH are bookends to an anthology of songs that comprise this "mixtape". I personally believe that the LP as a whole is more in line with the mixtape feel, even forgetting the literal presence of a dj. It's up to the listeners to connect this massive jigsaw puzzle Kendrick has laid out in front of us. He's told us a deeply complex story, told out of order, and gave us everything we needed to deduce how everything in this album was connected. The more you revisit this album, an interconnectedness starts to be noticed throughout various subject matters and styles.
Personally, I love the album, and the way he put together a project as rich and multi-faceted as this goes to show why this album won the pullitzer. Just like everything Kendrick puts out, this shit's pretty deep!
Sidenote: I'm so excited for the release of Mr Morale & The Big Steppers and your guys' eventual reaction. You're becoming one of my fave youtube channels, so keep it up! :]

On Pride, Kendrick's first hook he says in perfect world he would be happy and he was there in another life. In the first verse he goes back and forth about how the world caused him to be evil but he also makes points that would indicate that he's inherently evil. On the 2nd hook he says that maybe he wasn't there. He then addresses his own issues and why he is part of the reason the world isn't perfect. The first verse his vocals go up and down because with an ego his mood and feelings fluctuate so much. In the 2nd verse he's low the whole time because once your ego dies you are constantly sad while you adapt to it.

Eventually that title was changed to DAMN . because "damned if i do and damned if i dont" and that's what he felt after such power hitting songs like DNA. and HUMBLE. I think it's a perfect title. After every song I just sit and think "Damn....." We're witnessing a generational legend, one of the greatest to ever do it.

There was a really interesting or maybe important line in Lust. When he says “lately in James 4:4 friend of the world is enemy of the lord.” I think this is what Kendrick is battling he doesn’t want to be damned if he becomes a friend of the world.(Mainly the world’s social systems AKA, 7 deadly sins) Lust being one of them and Pride, etc. And that is where the duality theme can come from, the duality being Kendrick’s effort to battle trying not to be damned.

If you don’t know at the start he doesn’t actually die but she says that because he has no purpose in life. That’s why it goes from pride to humble and lust to love and he is learning. You can choose if he lives or dies. The one you did was weakness, because he isn’t evil by the end of the album. But if you play the tracks from end to start,it all changes and he gets a bad ending as he is slowly learning how to be wicked.
