I replaced the MRA lip type windscreen with MRA Touring Vario. It was a noticable improvement. Then I added another wind deflector on top of existing wind deflector. It looks absolutely ridiculous but it's even better on the highway.

I agree with Ian. Some wind noise adds to the realism of the ride. The Puig looks great and only a barn door will stop all the noise and buffeting. At this point you'll be switching to 4 wheels. Bike looks and sounds super. A little noise won't stop me from enjoying a Saturday morning ride a long with Dave. Keep them coming. 👍👍🏍🏍🏍🙋‍♂️

Continuing to enjoy all your videos, Dave. Thank you!
I fear you are on a search for the grail. I will be very surprised if you are able to find a windscreen that is as quiet as you want. The Puig windscreen was slightly better for noise reduction, and I am glad it reduced the buffeting you were experiencing. I seem to recall another motovlogger mentioning that his helmet has a "wind curtain" along the bottom of the chin area that seals out a lot of wind noise, so that may be another modification to try an experiment with. I too am a GS (GSA actually) rider and the GS windscreen is hard to beat. I ALWAYS wear earplugs. It makes the ride less fatiguing, and I actually can hear the traffic around me more clearly. When using comms, I instead wear ear buds. Also, due to developing Meniere's about 15 years ago, I've lost most of the hearing in one ear, so I am quite protective of the hearing that I have left.
Lastly, when you visit another moto shop, please give us a peek if you can. It's always interesting to see the differences in the moto culture and businesses there in Europe versus here in the States. -Bill

Hi Dave, Try running beading along the top edge. I think I saw it on your givi screen. I think you have another comment suggesting the same. I took it off my ST screen and the noise increase was incredible. It went back on very quickly. Glad you got rid of the buffet. Serious suggestion: attach some cotton tapes to the top edge of the screen and film the flow, it sounds like it's directly around your helmet. Is it the same with each of your lids?

  • @nikoscosmos
    @nikoscosmos Год назад +1

    As predicted...
Try using your hand as a mobile deflector and detector of the flow. I discovered on my GSA that a lot of wind noise came through my helmet top vent. Maybe a fairing deflector would help as per the Africa Twin? People on forums say cut the screen down so that the helmet is in clean air.

Hi Dave think you may be looking for the holy grail it is a sports bike not a tourer. You have bar risers that sit you up into the air flow more too. Just a thought have you tried different helmets the noise may be from the helmet. Worth trying different ones if only to see the difference and rule out.

I once owned a '99 BMW K1200LT. These bikes had a motorized windscreen with about 6 inches of adjustment. I'm 6-2 and the only way for the air to be silent was with the screen all the way up and looking through it. It's only then that one realizes how much racket one's valvetrain makes! In my experience (over 50 years holding a motorcycle endorsement), shortening the windscreen cleans up the air the most, unless one is looking through the windscreen. So-called naked bikes don't have fairings and windscreens pushing the air up into one's helmet area, disturbed by these various shapes. Naked bikes' air flow is laminar (clean air) and tends to make a more constant (smooth?) sound. Cheers and best of luck!

Dave, good on you for trying to get the best set up for your vlogs especially trying to get good audio.... and fair play to you for sharing all your trials and tribulations with honesty and good humour...... I have a generation 8 VFR with the original screen, I am 5'11" tall, and the screen is good at deflecting wind but there is always a degree of wind noise, more than my Triumph Tiger 900 (similar to your GS). If you haven't tried it as yet, you might try without the bar risers and maybe change the seat height if your model allows that. I dont have bar risers and have the seat in the lower position, it makes the riding position a little more sporty but might just give you some improvement as your head might be tucked down just a wee bit more. All that said, your video and audio quality remains amongst the best for motovloggers on RUclips so don't beat yourself up too much! Keep up the good work.....

Great Video. I bought a 2007 VFR 800 VTEC last Saturday and had an issue with the paint on it so it went back for an exact same replacement. The first one had the OEM screen, the second a double bubble and there was a massive difference in head buffeting when using the double bubble pretty much none at all, loved the second journey, 90 mile ride home mainly on the A1 even though it was baltic, there is some wind noise but who cares I absolutely love the bike and I could see myself touring on it, I'd just bang a pair of ear plugs in and it would be a joy riding it on Motorways for hours on end.

Hi Dave, Further to my previous comment, Firstly try a different Helmet, preferably an adventure style. If that doesn't improve then try the screen deflector and different helmet configurations. It's mainly to do with positive and negative pressure with the airflow. Having the wind deflector at the top of the screen will create two different pressures and should send the airflow higher. I know you don't like the wind deflectors but it would help to improve the airflow over your helmet. Going to an Adventure style helmet worked for me as the peak on the helmet changed the airflow and created a quiet ride. I spent loads a money on a Schuberth when I had the FJR and never got a quiet ride due to wind buffeting, then I bought an HJC and tried the wind deflector and hey presto a quieter ride. However I don't think you will get rid of it completely but we can try different combinations when I come over. How air you fixed next month work wise?

Me thinks you are going to have to use a screen deflector to get a quieter ride. As a 6 foot rider I have had wind noise,(buffeting) problems with every bike and a Puig deflector fitted to my GSA gives me a quieter ride. Wear ear plugs as well as more than 10 mins with that level of noise will erode your hearing very quickly!!!! The Puig screen is definitely an improvement!

might limit some of the vlogging on this bike, unless on slower roads. If it's a constant noise, can you run some kind of noise cancelling software? If you've not got any buffeting but it's still noisy, then it sounds like the screen is doing its job, and the issue may be with your helmet. Try padding out your cheek pads on your helmet and see if that quietens things down.

I'm on my 3rd VFR800. Love them to bits. Also don't like blacked out screens either.
I know your bike didn't come with an original screen - wonder how you would of found an original screen.
Having gone through a similar journey as you, I went back to the original Honda screen in the end and wear earplugs. The problem with many bikes is that larger screens just create a different issue, because they disrupt the laminar airflow so much.
To get silence you then either need a truly huge screen, or get one with an additional deflector that helps to smooth out the air flow. I hate the looks of large screens, especially with deflectors on them.
Smaller screens (normally, the OEM ones) that don't create turbulence, seem to work best for me - just accept that there will be wind noise, but importantly, from a smooth airflow. Also means that I get rain drops on visor at lower speeds. At higher speeds, they run off. Other benefit is in hot weather, still get airflow onto very top of chest, where I can unzip top of jacket to let some in.
I liked the FJR's electronically adjustable screen for this as it could be moved to get smooth cooling air, or complete silence. Just didn't like the shear size of the bike itself!

From the point of view of the noise in the video, there is a solution. If you switch to Davinci Resolve they have introduced a Dialogue Leveller and Voice Isolation effects which I can confirm are brilliant. Only available in the paid version but it's a $300 one-off (no subscription). Obviously, that won't help your ears whilst on the bike. 😉
