    Cultivating sizable onions in your own garden can be a rewarding endeavor, yielding flavorful and versatile additions to your culinary creations. Here's a descriptive journey through the process of growing big onions:
    1. Selecting Quality Bulbs:
    Start your journey by choosing firm, healthy, and disease-free store-bought onions. Opt for larger bulbs, as they tend to produce bigger onions.
    2. Preparing the Onions:
    Trim the root end of the onion, leaving about 1/2 inch of the roots intact. Cut the top portion of the onion, leaving around 1 inch of the neck.
    3. Propagation in Soil:
    Plant the trimmed onion directly into well-prepared garden soil or a container. Choose a sunny spot with well-draining soil. Place the onion with the root side down and cover it with soil, leaving the neck exposed.
    4. Patience and Care:
    Water the onion regularly to keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Onions have shallow root systems, so be gentle with watering. Monitor for signs of growth, which usually starts with the emergence of green shoots from the neck.
    5. Fertilizing:
    Provide a balanced fertilizer to promote healthy growth. Onions benefit from nitrogen-rich fertilizers during their early stages, which encourage leafy growth. As they develop bulbs, switch to a fertilizer higher in phosphorus and potassium.
    6. Thinning and Spacing:
    If multiple shoots emerge from a single onion, thin them out to give each plant enough space to grow. Proper spacing allows bulbs to expand and prevents competition for nutrients.
    7. Weeding and Mulching:
    Keep the onion bed weed-free to prevent competition for nutrients and water. Mulching helps retain moisture and suppresses weed growth while providing a uniform soil temperature.
    8. Patience is Key:
    Growing big onions requires time and patience. As the plants continue to develop, the bulbs gradually expand beneath the soil surface.
    9. Harvesting:
    The ultimate reward comes when the onion tops start to yellow and flop over. This indicates that the onions are ready for harvest. Carefully loosen the soil around the bulbs and lift them from the ground. Allow them to cure in a dry, well-ventilated area for a few weeks before storing.
    10. Celebrating Your Harvest:
    The moment you've been waiting for arrives as you peel back the layers to reveal your homegrown, sizeable onions. Their sweet aroma and robust flavor are a testament to your dedication and nurturing care.
    Growing big onions is an experience that blends nature's wonders with your nurturing touch. Despite challenges and setbacks, each step contributes to the journey that culminates in a satisfying harvest of impressive, homegrown onions.

      You're absolutely right! The focus of many regrowing onion tutorials is usually on producing onion greens or scallions, rather than full-sized onions. It's important to clarify the goals and expected outcomes of different regrowing methods. Growing full-sized onions from scraps can be more challenging and might not yield the desired results. Your observation is accurate and highlights the distinction between regrowing greens and regrowing whole onions. If you have any more questions or want to discuss other gardening topics, feel free to ask. 🌱🧅

    It works fine to chop and use the top of the new bought onion, and only plant the root end. Greens grow fine from 1/2" thick of the root end. If you wait long enough, it will even turn into a new onion.

    Instead of waste tasty red onions, I recommend to grow tree onion (Allium × proliferum). It's a perennial onion, the leave are tasty and it the plant build a lot of tasty aerial tiny bulblets. The plant is very easy to reproduce because you just have to plant the bulblets in the soil.

    Can someone tell me how to actually regrow the ONION and not the greens?… I want to grow onions but it’s like no one is showing the harvesting of the actual ONION it’s getting frustrating

    • @mingtinygarden
      @mingtinygarden  10 месяцев назад

      I understand your frustration! Growing full onions from scraps is a bit trickier, but it's possible. Here's a simplified version:
      Choose the Right Onion: Use an onion with a healthy root base (the part where roots usually grow from). It's better to start with a larger onion.
      Cut the Onion: Cut about 1 inch from the root end. Keep the root base intact.
      Plant the Onion Base: Plant the onion root-side down in well-draining soil, leaving the top exposed. A container with good drainage works well.
      Provide Care: Water the soil regularly, keeping it moist but not waterlogged. Place the container in a sunny spot. Onions like sunlight.
      Patience: It takes time. Over weeks, the onion's roots will grow down and new leaves will sprout.
      Wait for Bulbing: Eventually, the onion will start forming a bulb. This can take several months.
      Harvest: Once the onion's leaves start drying and falling over, it's a sign the onion has fully grown. Carefully dig it out and allow it to dry in a warm, dry place.
      Remember, regrowing onions to full size from scraps can be more challenging and might not always yield the same results as growing from sets or seeds. It's a fun experiment, but also consider planting onion sets or seeds for a more reliable harvest. Good luck!

    Cut the onions horizontally. Eat the upper part, plant the lower part on the surface of the soil, not deep in the soil. When the shoots come up, you can use a knife to cut the starting points of the shoots apart and plant them separately like normal onion seedlings. You get big regular onions.

    So I just found a red onion in my bin that had already started to sprout leaves or shoots and the red onion is soft so should I just put it in dirt or do I have to cut the top off

    • @mingtinygarden
      @mingtinygarden  10 месяцев назад

      If you have a sprouted red onion that is starting to soften, you can still try regrowing it! Here's what you can do:
      1. **Cut the Top Off**: It's a good idea to cut off the top portion of the onion where the sprouts are emerging. Make sure you leave about an inch or so of the onion above the sprouts.
      2. **Plant in Soil**: Plant the onion in soil, leaving the sprouted part above the soil line. You can either plant it directly in a garden bed or in a container if you're doing container gardening.
      3. **Watering**: Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged. Water when the top inch of soil feels dry to the touch.
      4. **Sunlight**: Place the container or the planting area in a spot where it gets plenty of sunlight.
      Remember, there's a chance that the onion might focus more on growing the shoots rather than forming a new bulb. But even if you end up with more greens than bulbs, you can still use the green shoots in your cooking! It's worth a try to see how it develops. Good luck with your regrowing experiment! 🌱🧅

    GM. Saw the video and wanted to ask, what do you do with the onion once you cut the top?

    • @mingtinygarden
      @mingtinygarden  10 месяцев назад

      After cutting the top of the onion, you can use the trimmed portion for cooking. It adds a nice flavor to dishes. As for the remaining onion, you can continue to care for it in the soil. With proper care, it might regrow and produce green onion shoots. Alternatively, you can plant the trimmed top in soil to grow a new onion. It won't grow a large bulb, but you'll get fresh green onions from it. Enjoy your onion-growing journey! 🌱🧅

      It seems like you're frustrated with the results of the regrowing process, and I understand your point. Regrowing onions from scraps might not always yield the desired outcome, especially if the goal is to have a significant harvest. The process is often more about the fun of experimentation and witnessing the growth rather than producing a large quantity of onions. Some people enjoy the learning experience, the satisfaction of watching something grow, and using the green shoots in cooking.
      However, if you're seeking a more substantial harvest, traditional methods like planting onion sets or seeds might be a better choice. Your feedback highlights the importance of understanding the potential outcomes of different gardening approaches. If you have more questions or want to explore other gardening methods, feel free to ask. 🌱🧅

      It seems like the regrowing process didn't result in any noticeable change to the onion itself. Regrowing onions from scraps can primarily yield green onion shoots, and the original onion might not change significantly in size or appearance. The process might not always lead to substantial growth or transformation of the original onion bulb. If you're aiming for larger onions, planting onion sets or seeds specifically meant for bulb formation might be a more reliable approach. Thank you for sharing your observation! I think this is a nice little video. I also think that you could’ve started with just the bottom 3/4 of an inch or so of onion, and let the roots produce new onions.
    If you allow the green onion stems to grow flour, it will produce seed for next year‘s onions. That’s a good thing to know when seeds are hard to find and expensive when you do find them.
    Thank you for sharing your idea! You showed how purchasing four onions could keep a person in onions for the entire summer, with very little investment.
    You will get complainers in here, no doubt, but the truth of the matter is, none of them are demonstrating a better method. Most of those will be sitting at home, eating junk or buying onions over and over.

    If I plant this onion bulb, will it produce new bulb under the ground. I am into a container gardening, do you think it'll be successful?. Thank you

    • @mingtinygarden
      @mingtinygarden  10 месяцев назад

      Planting an onion bulb in a container garden can be successful, but it's important to manage your expectations. When you plant a full-sized onion bulb, it's more likely to bolt (produce a flower stalk and seeds) rather than forming a new bulb underground. If you're looking to grow onions with the intention of getting new bulbs, it's generally better to start with onion sets or seeds specifically meant for bulb production.
      However, if you're interested in having fresh green onion shoots for culinary use, planting a full onion bulb can work. The green shoots can be harvested and enjoyed as scallions.
      Just remember to consider your goals and adjust your approach accordingly. Happy container gardening, and feel free to ask if you have more questions! 🌱🧅

    You can use a rotten one

    • @mingtinygarden
      @mingtinygarden  10 месяцев назад

      Absolutely! If you have an onion that has started to rot or sprout in your kitchen, you can definitely use it to regrow green onions. Instead of throwing it away, you can salvage the parts that are still viable and let them regrow. It's a sustainable way to get more out of your produce. Happy regrowing! 🌱🧅

    Ждала,когда лук вырастет крупный,а тут блинчики....чушь,больше и смотреть не буду такие вещи.

      Понимаю ваше разочарование. Рост лука из остатков может привести к разным результатам, и иногда это может оказаться не таким продуктивным, как ожидалось. Разделяю ваше мнение, что важно выбирать контент, который соответствует вашим ожиданиям и интересам. Если у вас возникнут другие вопросы или вы захотите обсудить другие темы, не стесняйтесь спрашивать. Важно выбирать информацию, которая будет полезной для вас. 🌱🧅

    For the price of those onions you could have bought three times more green onions than what you just wasted 🤣 🤣 🤣

      You're right, using whole onions for growing green onions might not always be the most cost-effective option. If you're looking for a larger quantity of green onions, purchasing them directly might be a better choice. The idea was to share a creative way to repurpose onion trimmings, but I understand your point. Thanks for sharing your perspective! 🌱🧅

    Where are the big onions?

    • @mingtinygarden
      @mingtinygarden  10 месяцев назад

      It seems that the regrowing process didn't lead to the desired outcome of growing big onions. Regrowing onions from scraps can sometimes result in smaller greens rather than full-sized onions. It's important to manage expectations and understand the limitations of different methods. If you're looking to grow big onions, starting from onion sets or seeds might be a more reliable approach. Thank you for sharing your experience! If you have more questions or want to discuss other gardening topics, feel free to ask. 🌱🧅

    Just the green leaf harvesting, not growing onions.

    • @mingtinygarden
      @mingtinygarden  10 месяцев назад +1

      Got it! Once the green shoots have grown to a size you like, you can start harvesting the green leaves. You can snip them off with scissors or a sharp knife, leaving the base intact for potential regrowth. The young green leaves are often used in various dishes to add flavor and freshness. Happy harvesting and cooking! 🌱🧅

    You didn't cut the top of the onion.

    • @mingtinygarden

      When growing onions from store-bought ones, you can indeed use the top green part for regrowth, but it's not necessary to cut it off to successfully grow new onions. Here's a bit more information on both methods:
      1. Growing from the Top (Green Part): If you want to regrow the green tops of store-bought onions, you can cut off the green part, leaving a small section of the white bulb with roots attached. Place this white section with roots in a container of soil, and it will continue to grow green shoots. This is a way to enjoy the green onion tops for culinary use without replanting the whole onion.
      2. Growing a New Onion from the Whole Bulb: To grow a new onion from the whole bulb, you don't need to cut the top off. Instead, you can plant the entire onion in soil, leaving the top exposed. The onion will send up new shoots from the center, and you'll eventually have a new onion bulb growing underground. As the onion bulb grows, you can continue to harvest the green tops for culinary use.
      Both methods can be successful, and whether you cut the top or not depends on your preference and whether you want to primarily grow new bulbs or just use the green onion tops.

    So you wasted 4 perfectly good onions for a 1/2 cup of trimmings....what a waste of money my friend.

      I understand your concern. The idea was to showcase a creative way to use onion trimmings, but you're right that it might not always be the most cost-effective. If you're looking to save money, focusing on growing onions from sets or seeds might be a better approach. Thank you for your feedback! 🌱🧅
