This reminded me of a small French company that makes film rolls out of washi paper (Kozo and Gampi, more specifically) instead of the classic cellulose. Tried them a few years ago, they give interesting textured results (if your analog camera can handle 25 ISO ^^) and the negatives are cool object on their own :-)

I laughed the first time I met a “Tomoe River snob”. But it eventually won me over, and I became one myself. 😄 But I am going to have to check out those alternatives you mentioned at the end.

I used to be a 120gsm person, but after severe joint and muscle problems, I was forced to choose a lighter paper
And after trying products that use tomoe, I haven’t gone back
Not that I need a paper that holds ink that well since I never use such pens, but I was just so used to the heavier weight, and was afraid of the durability of thinner paper.

A paper I like is the Office Depot store brand Premium coated white 22# paper. It is 9.5 x 7.25, 80 sheets, spiral bound. Do you have a paper that might compare to it in an A5 journal book. I am a left-handed fountain pen writer. I cannot use Tomoe River because I drag my hand over the wet ink and smear it. I have found that this office depot paper works very well when writing left-handed but I do not like the spiral binding. I have found several inks that work well with it. Have you any ideas? I see the paper is made in Malaysia.

I haven't tried Sanzen S, but I did try the 2021 Tomoegawa paper, and they didn't perform as well as the pre-2021 Tomoegawa papers with my fountain pens/inks. I"ve heard great things about the Sanzen! Are JetPens's Kanso Sasshi notebooks still using the old paper stock, or have those already been switched over to the Sanzen already? Thanks for another great video!

I love the Tomoe River, especially in the Kanso Noto notebook. However, I tried using some loose leaf as filler for my disk bound notebook. The light weight wasn’t great for the shape of the holes-it could get snagged easily and damaged, especially if the notebook was folded over on itself.
I had won a Maruman Mnemosyne notebook, which had displaced Rhodia as my go-to fountain pen paper, and, for me right now, second only to Tomoe River. I’ll harvest sheets from the notebook and punch it for disk binding. The heavier weight (80 gsm) works better for this application, with only a slight reduction in performance.

i much prefer cosmo air paper over tomoe river. i like that it shows off the shading qualities, i like the subtle grit (like a velvet whiteboard) and the low show through for easier readability. i still have diaries and some quick jotters made with tomoe river, but i think i’ll likely be using cosmo air only after they run out.

The way you pronounce "washi" is incorrect, the weight is on the wrong part. It's hard to describe in text, but your way sounds more like "washi" as in "hawk" or "myself", with more weight in "shi". Washi as in washi tape should have more weight on the "wa." The English way of pronouncing it is actually not far.
