From Wikipedia: Greenwood composed the score for the 2007 film, There Will Be Blood... The soundtrack contains excerpts from "Popcorn Superhet Receiver". His work as the composer for this film was highly acclaimed by reviewers and earned him an award at the Critics' Choice Awards. On January 21, 2008, however, the score was declared ineligible for an Academy Award nomination under a rule that prohibited "scores diluted by the use of tracked themes or other pre-existing music."
Actually, if I'm not mistaken this music was made before Jonny was commissioned to do the soundtrack and he ended up incorporating a bunch of it in the score.
This is brilliant. People might also be interested that he sampled himself (the pizzicato section just over half way through) in the collab he and Thom Yorke did with DOOM, 'Retarded Fren'.
The begining of this eerie music (especially from 0:45) reminds me of Krzysztof Penderecki "De Natura Sonoris N°2" (used in the Stanley Kubrick movie "The Shining"). It gives a chilling and haunting dimension to the music, and also to the opening of "There will be blood" (Paul Thomas Anderson, 2007). A bit like the "Rosemary's baby" OST by Krzysztof Komeda.
I got it by searching on google for an mp3, I found a few versions and I liked this one the best. Sorry but I can't remember where or when this was recorded.
This has a lot of substrate, but i don't know if by fault of the recording, or by fault of being drowned in low pitch string instrument sound, that it is lost. Which is a pity. If you struggle, or play with Audacity, you can hear it.
The chatter that subtly elevates from around 13:56 to 15:37, was that written as part of the piece? If so what the fuck? Is he an alien or something? Who thinks of this shit? I would love to hear the music that plays inside his head
"This is the elevator music in the elevator to Hell" Skip Mendler 1 year ago Via deze interpretatie, kan niet anders dan denken aan Vestdijk's 'De kellner en de levenden'.
Not feeling it. Maybe I'm expecting it too be too much like classical music but it feels really repetative. Never takes me anywhere new, feel like it just tries to continually one-up itself. I'm no expert but maybe it was just supposed to be a sample to pick from for the movie. All that said I could never create this if I tried. Also, I'd never try since as a piece apart from film... I'm not sure it stands up. But again, it's easy to be a critic.

I've been there too Johny
This is full of anxiety and fear. Jonny Greenwood is an artist!
penderecki...a great composer, and teacher. I hope Greenwood's profile can help Penderecki gain greater recognition in the UK
There's something so absolutely eerie about this piece. It gives me chills.
you should listen to Krzysztof Penderecki "De Natura Sonoris N°2" ; it resembles a lot
9:45 Don't mind me, just bookmarking.
I can't not think of a certain murderous oilman while listening to this
Bashtad in a bashket...
@@nosojdjos i told you i would drink you
Bill Rockerfeller?
@@elemkay5104Daniel Plainview, of course.
Ah, this takes me back to my turn of the century oil baron days where I would crush my enemies.
This is a really emotionally intense listen
Listening to this while simultaneously listening to Christmas choral music works really really well
This is beautiful, and full of surprises.
Actually, if I'm not mistaken this music was made before Jonny was commissioned to do the soundtrack and he ended up incorporating a bunch of it in the score.
Wow!! Astonishingly nice!!
Only now knowing Jonny outside Radiohead. Great work!
This is the elevator music in the elevator to Hell
going.................. down?
Lift to limbo
Absolutely brilliant.
The emotion from 16:20 is one I’ve only ever experienced from this piece. So uniquely conflicted.
I've always loved that bit beginning at 9:28 to 11:48. Believe on it's own it's called Proven Lands on the There Will Be Blood soundtrack.
Yes its in "There Will Be Blood". Music is inspired by Penderecki's "Polymorphia".
it scares me but I love it
play this in my funeral
Johnny! your didit!!! greatly!!!!!!
Great composition.
Beyond common thought or experience
Genial....Absolutamente genial....
One of the most epic musical sounds I’ve ever heard. Jonny Greenwood is a master. Or, if you want to be even more PTA-ish, he is THE Master :D
RIP Krzysztof Penderecki
10:00 I can see where the idea of Burn the Witch came from
"there will be blood" soundtrack great movie
The Reincarnation was real, Ligeti is returned from the other side of universe, somehow. And also I'm happy for you Jonny, you're crazy now.
Always puts me in a cheeful mood
This is brilliant. People might also be interested that he sampled himself (the pizzicato section just over half way through) in the collab he and Thom Yorke did with DOOM, 'Retarded Fren'.
I love that track with DOOM over it... a marriage made in heaven - just like Jonny & Radiohead with Paul Thomas Anderson!
I believe so. Greenwood wrote the music for the film.
Brutal y bello sonido!!!
he should do an album with scott walker
this is strangely pleasant
Best title ever
yeah he used it before on a film called bodysong...
Amazing
I didn't know he worked with Penderecki. It all makes sense now.
expedition and experiment from the experience. jonny is fucking amazing.
That's a crazy rule.
VERY definitely influenced by John Williams' score for "Close Encounters of the Third Kind". Ominous and eerie, yet beautiful.
Unreal. Mind blowing stuff!
I couldn't help but notice the similarities with the opening from 1970's tangerine dreams "zeit" album.
Perfect foreboding sound for the life of Daniel Plainview. Very scary
Jonny really is out there. Amazing composer.
Anyway, I never thought of asking before, but . . . what the hell is a het?
Short for "superheterodyne receiver."
If you have to ask what a het is, you must be a het. I don't make the rules.
@@keithklassen5320 you're being the het here, the more hets the merrier, I say.
Superheterodyne. A process by which a radio receiver filters a frequency through a modulator that allows transmission.

The... the song is... it's ALIVE!
9:42 is the genesis of Burn The Witch. word.
Agreed.
More part of the "There will be blood" score really
this was written before "there will be blood". he reused that section for TWBB, and later used the same orchestration technique for burn the witch
Some parts of the song sounds like JU-87 Stukas racing down
Agreed! I caught that too
I got it by searching on google for an mp3, I found a few versions and I liked this one the best. Sorry but I can't remember where or when this was recorded.
I think great idea, some new movie trailers and bloody moments When I listen to this song
+Murat Şentürk this song is inspiring
"What was the name of the farm next to the hill house?"
soundtrack of dorohedoro

GRE@T!!!
As someone who is diagnosed with GAD, I can verify that this is what anxiety would sound like
TOP!!
This music makes me imagine a mask in the shadow, a white theater mask, or a stone column in the sea... with wind, waves... very strange
Vidocq, movie.
Was the beginning taken from his There Will Be Blood score? The first 2 minutes (I think) remind me of the introductory scene from that film.
yep! it was actually this piece that anderson listened to that convinced him to work with jonny
Who is the orchestra performing? There are no performance details in the description.
This has a lot of substrate, but i don't know if by fault of the recording, or by fault of being drowned in low pitch string instrument sound, that it is lost. Which is a pity. If you struggle, or play with Audacity, you can hear it.
09:12 hmm
10:00 WOW
The new Lontano by Ligeti!
Thats exactly how I ended up here.
Netflix bring me here.

They have There Will Be Blood on instant right now.

How did he make this?

Everyone says Penderecki, but how about some Frippertronic/Soundscapes too.
feels like a Stanley Kubrick film
Anton Driftwood or PTA
Anton Driftwood No joke, I heard something similar as this while watching The Shining.
Had the same thought, Kubrick might have loved Jonny.
Because Kubrick drew on Ligetti and Penderecki first, yes.
