Hiroo Onoda - The Last Japanese WWII Soldier To Surrender, in 1974!

- Опубликовано: 17 окт 2024
- Hirō Onoda (March 19, 1922 - January 16, 2014) was an Imperial Japanese Army intelligence officer who fought in World War II and was a Japanese holdout who did not surrender in 1945. After Onoda spent 29 years holding out in the Philippines, his former commander traveled from Japan to personally issue orders relieving him from duty in 1974. He held the rank of second lieutenant in the Imperial Japanese Army.

Man that's honor, you got to respect this soldier, only surrendered after his general flew to him to relieve him off his duties.
I mean did he surrender? His CO gave him the order to surrender his weapons. He followed those orders as a soldier so what I keep thinking is by a ground troop like him that wouldn't be looked at as surrender but more of what you mentioned being relieved of his duties? This kind of still puzzles me
@@watersoflife1013 I think he surrendered after he was given the order.
But he didn't surrender like because he was beaten by the enemy. Probably the distinction was very important for him.
@@deadby15 a surrender is a surrender, Japan lost, even if that was over 20 years before
"A direct order from my superior officer" - man! talk about discipline and respect for the chain of command.
in this case luckily the officer still alive.
No, talk about how to waste 29 years of your life.
@@Z3t487 to the imperial Japanese army, their life is not important. It belongs to the emperor.
@@nicholaseng3480 Well, that's just out of my comprehension as an ignorant civil western man. For me it's just insane he kept following a 29 years old military order with ofc no further updates.
@@Z3t487 this shows how deep the culture of strictness of following order of their superiors had been implanted to their hearts and minds. Many find it hard to believe as Japanese are a well mannered and polite race acted so brutally in the WW2. Their mission was to conquer the whole world. All in the name of the emperor. Initially they looked like on the right track. But we all knew what happened after that.
He didn't lived the "rest of his life in Japan". He moved to Brazil from 1974 to 1984 and married there and then he came back to Japan.
Nope. That was a bullshit video.

He better have gotten paid overtime for that.
He did get paid for 30 years of service though
@@leothelion2001 As far as I know he refused to take that money or something like that
The Japanese government offered him a enormous sum of money in back pay but he refused it
@@leothelion2001
It was _offered_ by Japan. He refused it. Even when donations were later collected for him, he donated every cent. Honor dictated that he not be paid for service not needed, even if it had been served. He had a code of _honor_ that rarely exists anywhere in the world today. I detest war... he was also, technically, my "enemy", as I had several family members (6) who served with the US forces in WWII, three of them did not come home.
Lt. Onoda Hiroo's beliefs were far from my own, or those of my lineage. Yet, I cannot dismiss his commitment to what _he_ fully believed in, or the sacrifices that he experienced for those beliefs.. I would have not have expected less from anyone with _his_ familial history to do anything less than he did. Respect. Another "ancient concept" quickly vanishing from the world of today. ~Peace!

Im just imagining that when he returned to japan, he was thinking whats with the anime and stuff. And what happend to the Japanese flag
Yes the red circle/ sun had been moved slightly to the right.
Führer des Benutzers Anime may not have been called Anime when it began but as a kid in the 1960’s I watched a lot of Japanese Anime style cartoons. Speed Racer & Gigantor are the two I remember.

They should have sent that Marine, Guy Gabaldon, to talk to Hirō. He talked a total of 1500 Japanese soldiers into surrendering. He actually saved their lives and the prisoners provided valuable intelligence information. Gabaldon was able to do this even though the Japanese were under strict orders to never surrender and few of them did.
3 years old, don't care. That would be the battle of the unstoppable force and the immovable object.
A direct order from my commanding officer

True Soldier defined
He is a true murdering scumbag.
I'm a Filipino and our teacher mention him during our class in geography. I'm amazed.
japanese soldier done many things bad in our country during WW2 but the courage of this soldier not to surretruely truly0
one of its kind...salute to this truly the last samurai....
Amazing example of warrior ethos. He was on the wrong side of things but his commitment to Emperor and country is no less amazing. It took a lot of intelligence, toughness and courage to continue on like he and his two fellow soldiers did.
"Loyal 'til the end"
just like The Boss (Metal Gear Solid 3) did 😔😔

An intelligence officer who didn't know the war was over...🤔
Think about that.🙃
Ravage Gonza I know. That's some creepy shit!
Well, he and his squad were stuck on a island. And the papers that the army sent to show they surrendered were thought to be lies from the allies. They also had to live off of the fruits grown from the island and they raided the small villages. I think he killed about 30 villagers. But he was pardoned by the Philippines government.
Ravage Gonza true but he cashed in like a Regular Japanese Businessman in the End
BUT ADMIT IT U GOTTA ADMIRE ANIME
i suppose honour is a word that you don't understand nor your parents thought you about it.
Onoda - 10,000 days in the jungle is an excellent film. Even though its over 3 hours long it never gets boring.
He must had been shocked when he return that his country became better and prosperous when they lose the war.
He was sad from the change of its people Lost was the samurai code and replaced with factories and Western culture values It would be like going to see a elvis concert and Marliyn manson is on stage

he must be suprised to see japan transform into weeaboo land
Not shocked but rather he was actually unhappy with modern japan

You forgot to mention his time in Brazil.
The real patriot, respect 👍
Fought war for almost 30 years , only to return to Japanese Weebs addicted to Anime
Which war exactly? The one ended 29 years before? Ah, right.
Huh? How tf can a Japanese person be a weeb? Lol Weeb is the shortened form of weeaboo which means a non-Japanese person who's obsessed with Japan and thinks Japanese culture is superior than any other culture including their own.
Great Soldier.. keep his dedication n loyalty
From what i read he left Japan and set up his training facility in Brazil where he was also a farmer. He was disappointed in the Japan he returned to as they did not have the same values as he was used to.
Commandable soldier spirit. It's a great honour to know about Hiro Onodo.
Gutless coward and murderer.
My greatest respect for a Soldier and Warrior indeed!
Best soldier story i ever heard. He is really awesome !❤️❤️❤️

He was too good to be an intelligence officer. He fought a war that ended 2 decades before.
Imagine being in 1972 during the cold war and you see a WW2 japanese soldier stealing food
Hi at 0:38 Lubang island is actually a little to the northwest of the red oval, the island encircled here is Mindoro and not Lubang although Lubang is within the administration of Mindoro province today
Somebody needs better math skills. Born in 1922, died in 2014. That's not 94 years, but 92. Still, it was good that he lived another 40 years after his surrender.
Preach what you teach! He was 91 when he died.
How old were the many innocents that he murdered?

you forgott to say that he accidently killed like 30 civilists, in knowing that they where enemy troops ... but still, what a Man
This guy is a perfect example that loyalty should not be a good values. Learn to always pick sides and fight for the good and assess if youre still in the good side, unlike this man who fought innocent people for mere pride and mere loyalty.
Talk about honour and determination

Lucky his former superior was still alive.. if not he will not be surrender until today..
He would've surrender until he died

A little trivia, the last axis army to surrender after world war to was the Croatian army. After the formal surrender of the axis army, pockets of Croat armies continued the war for another 2 months before they surrended.
He should be in the Guinness Book of Records as the World's Hiding Seek Champion.

The real samurai..💟
This is what you call a Soldier
Can’t blame him
He was just following his orders and if those leaflets were a fake to bring them down the mountain they would’ve died so a good smart soldier will only take direct orders or from a telephone which he didn’t have...pretty sad he was forgotten like that
Someone owes this dude a fortune in years of back pay xD
This guy is a legendary
The Great Soldier of human history
Let us take a moment and remember he and his men killed some thirty people after Japan Surrendered. Innocent civilians all of them, therefore not quite the hero rather a victim of Japan. In Japan he did become a hero. Japan should recognise all of their crimes including the Comfort Women they deserve justice as well of those innocent people,
Yet they fail to mention that he killed 30 people in his 30 years, mostly farmers/civilians.
Anyone celebrating him is celebrating a murderer who didnt even show remorse for what he did to their families. The irony
The legend had It that he still didnt surrender
Samurai spirit is burning from this man
He moved to Brazil for a while before he moved to Japan to open the school.
If your intelligence officer does not know if the war is still on or not, then the war is surely lost.
He followed all the orders he was given even after the war ended, only after getting a direct order. What a true patriot.
Onoda: I wonder what Japan and it's new generation of young men are up to these days.
*comes across Boku no Pico*
Onoda: Back to the forest I go.
There's some wrong info here. Mr Onoda did not spend the rest of his life in Japan, he came to Brazil in 1974 and became a successful cattle rancher. Then, he returned to Japan in 1984 to spend the rest of his life.
This man is no hero. He can be praised for his loyalty and presistence, but he can't be considered a hero.
Spent the rest of life in Japan? Did he immigrate to somewhere in S. America for awhile?
Brubeck Desmond yes! he lived here in Brazil
To Brazil
Indeed he couldn't adapt well to post-war Japan, so he moved to Brazil. He then returned to Japan.
Accounts are different. Some say he went to Brazil where he lived out the rest of his life and some say he lived the rest of his life in Japan. Which is it?
Its called being lost in a isolated island during war

A true Japanese soldier would rather die than surrender.
And in the end, they must surrender in order to survive. Further conflict could result in annihilation of Japan itself.
