  • Jackie, Juno and I hiked Black Elk Peak (formerly known as Harney Peak), the highest point in South Dakota at 7,244 ft, over Labor Day 2019. We hiked from the north side via Willow Creek which is not the standard route but we wanted to avoid the crowds and do some backcountry camping.

Just did this hike a month back or so. Beautiful hike with just the right amount of physical effort. My knee and shoulders (from my pack) could've used a little more conditioning but it was a great one none the less.

3:22 is Elkhorn Mountain, maybe the hardest to summit in the black hills

Trail 4 from Sylvan Lake has more people but you can do Little Devils Tower in the same loop which has a little bit of easy scrambling if you want some action.

It will always be Harney peak to me. We go up every time we are in the black hills.

I've hiked the area many times, it used to be even more pretty before the beetles and fires.

Have you encountered many ticks on your hikes, treks and climbs? Just curious, from back east and it is a total barrage of diseased bloodsuckers.

James Dorsheimer not out west but def out east. In Colorado they aren’t nearly as prevalent as the white mountains or green mountains.
