The Hard Times Firebird of Truman Fields won a lot more races and got the credit for being the fastest one of those cars for decades.
@@RealDougFieldsI’m talking about these pure stock races not Super stock NHRA.
@@1972Ventura455ho Mino was brilliant. He knew every trick in the book to make an engine run to its absolute full potential. Valve jobs, porting, polishing, extrude honing, parasitic weight reduction, etc… Jim was almost cut from the same cloth as Roger Penske lol, the body acid dip king lol.
@@1972Ventura455ho It was never Super Stock only Stock and Pure Stock in IHRA and Stock Eliminator in NHRA. Our Pure Stocker ran 11.50's but we saw no need to go to these races back then..
I love the 70 to 73 formula firebird since a little kid. We do not get to see this car much nevertheless racing. Going up against the mustage is just a compliment to a car that did not get much attention years ago. it was always about chevy and mopar and mustanges. So for me this is very interistiong.
I’ve always wanted a 1974 Trans Am or Formula. I’ve always loved the ‘74 models, as well as the 70-73 models of course, the ‘74 just happens to be my favorite. There’s a stunning white 1974 Trans Am in the movie “Dazed and Confused”… love that car!
It’s a combination of factors, “power to weight ratio “ being foundational, but also the tire/rim for the 60 n 70 cars effected things greatly (14in bicycle tires lol). Apples to apples, the 80 n 90 cars weren’t faster contingent to those type of factors
Only a few....Had a 1990 ZR-1 bone stock would spin its way to low 13s, LACR, Famoso Raceway.
To be honest Id rather drive a 60s musclecar the experience is SO different.
Why did the '79 Trans Am 403 even show up? 86MPH??
@@permanentwaves4621 yeah those Oldsmobile 403 engines were decent cruisers but not very impressive. Never understood why Pontiac didn’t just continue the 400 on up until the Chevy engines replaced them in the early ‘80s.
it was my car showed up because it was fun never lost to a newer 400 pontiac 76 or newer
😂😂😂😂😂
@@josephculek4820 hey Joe! It was also quite hot that particular day. Do you remember the best time you ran in concours class?
Do you currently own an older muscle car today?
@@permanentwaves4621 the late ‘70s Firebirds we’re still cool as hell. I actually owned a 1980 Turbo 301 Trans Am Pace Car back in the day, with 53,000 miles. One of my biggest regrets was selling that car 25 years ago 😢
My 2022 Mustang would win most races against these cars. I guess they figured out a way to make an engine run faster with the pollution crap on it. I still love the cars in this video. Any kind of 60s Camaro is beautiful.
Being what, 50-60 yrs newer tech, it should!
Gearing is one factor why new cars feel peppier. No 3 spd autos
Uhh no. They made 754 Torino Talladegas. But with the 428CJ pretty rare.
TA muscle car baby
🙌👏👏
Kinda shocking that a sub 300hp LT1 F body could hit 13.9s pretty easily, and hardly any of these 400+hp cars could.
Times really have changed! These days a V6 Camry could hang with most of these cars, maybe even beat a few.
Some of these races were ridiculously unfair. Like 455 vs. a 302. 😮💨
unfair? Its racing, no times out or takeovers given
383 was dodges slowest moter
@@Yo-hann-c2b there was a 383 in the video uploaded before this one that ripped easy 13s. They had potential if you get them to breathe.
@@Yo-hann-c2b …although they were no 440 or 426.
14 and 15s are pretty sad.
For a stock 60 yr old car? Not bad at all
Put a performance tune and good tire on different story
455 HO, NOT a Super Duty
There was a Super Duty 455 in 1973 and 74 only found in the Trans Am and Formula. The film is too blury to see the shaker hood.
Rhe video had both an HO and SD. I'm surprised how slow the SD was
@@jeffb243 both are featured
The first one was an HO. But there were a couple of Super Dutys right after that, starting at 0:43 .
OMG, somebody had the balls to bring a 383 to the track. One thing for sure, a 383 is no muscle car engine, a 440, barely. A 426 Hemi------------------ you betcha.
426 was only 350 hp net at 5,000 or 365 net at 6,000. 2023 5.7 is 385 net horsepower.
why would anyone want a muscle car with an automatic
@@jonathanchartrand3351 I actually feel the same way, although you really kind of can’t beat a well built reverse manual automatic with a shift kit in a drag race… but I still love a clutch!
Traffic.
Beautiful cars and pathetic 1/4 mile times. lol
Yes a real 1/4 mile track
