Super Mario Bros. (NES) Playthrough - NintendoComplete

  • A playthrough of Nintendo's 1985 platformer for the NES, Super Mario Bros.
It's Super Mario Bros.' thirty-fifth birthday this month.
    I know, right?!
I feel like the old man telling stories when I say this, but it's hard to believe that so much time has passed. I got my NES for Christmas in 1988 (first grade!), and it came with the 2-in-1 Super Mario/Duck Hunt cartridge, and wow. I had a 2600 and I had played it to death, but the NES was worlds beyond the decrepit Atari. Playing Super Mario Bros. was like discovering video games for the very first time. Everyone talks about how revolutionary it was, and of course they're right. Nintendo is the company they are today largely thanks to this game, but it's hard to describe in words just how big of a deal it truly was.
But anyways, my gushing gaming origins story-tell aside, Super Mario Bros. is the game responsible for the platforming genre as we know it, let alone the lasting contributions it made to shaping the philosophy of game design in general.
And quite deservedly, Mario is one of the most widely recognized pop culture icons in the world. Does the game really need any further introduction?
Here are the timestamps for stuff that I'd like to draw your attention to:
    0:06 First loop
    9:09 1up trick with a Koopa shell
    33:52 Second loop
41:25 Third loop and the Minus world
In the first loop, I play the game as straight as possible. No warp zones, and no bonus areas that skip large chunks of a level.
In the second loop, I take (what is, as far as I know) the shortest possible path through the game. I warp from 1-2 to 4-1, and then again from 4-2 to 8-1. Once I had finally mastered the game as a kid, this was the way I usually played it. It was a great way to burn ten or fifteen minutes before school or for when dinner wasn't quite ready yet.
Finally, the third loop is only played through 1-2, where I show how to access the fabled stage -1. I can still remember kids talking about this one on the playground! Just be warned that once you've done the trick, you'll be stuck in stage -1. When you enter the pipe at the end, the game returns you to the beginning of the level, and the only way out of an endless loop is to get a game over or to hit the reset button.
(Completely random aside: after playing FF7 Remake, now whenever I do the SMB 1-up trick, I can't help but think of the bit where Johnny says, "And then there was this crazy-looking house, right? And it was all like trying to kill 'em! But then Cloud was all like bing, bang, boom!" To which the incredulous pharmacy guy responds, "Your friend fought...a house? ...A house?" The house being a comic substitute for the koopa shell... yeah, weird association, I guess, but the guy's disbelief made me laugh so hard!)
I had a video of this game up previously, but it was showing some cracks from age. It was one of the first videos I ever put on RUclips (about seven years ago now!), and the 240p stream seemed like a poor showing for a now decidedly middle-aged Mario. This new playthrough, recorded at 720p60, felt like an appropriate way to give him a bit of confidence-boosting Botox without going all-out Melania. Mario deserves some dignity, after all.
Needless to say, I love Super Mario Bros., and chances are, if you have a pulse, you do as well. Doesn't the world seem so much nicer when people can universally agree on how awesome something is?
    Happy birthday, Mario!

The most important video game ever made.
The game that saved a dying industry.
The game that launched a company from playing cards and arcade games to one of the most profitable companies in the world.
The game that created a global icon.
The game that gave us 35 years worth of wonderful childhood memories and fun game play.
35 years later, we owe everyone involved a debt of gratitude for how this game impacted our lives.

I'm maybe about 5 years younger than you, born in 1986, but my first console was the 2600 as well. We only had two games on it, _Front Line_ and _Mouse Trap_ , before jumping ahead to getting _Sonic the Hedgehog_ Christmas of 1991. I completely missed out on playing Mario games, save for a few occasions at relatives/friends (mainly through _Super Mario All-Stars_ on SNES), until 1998, when we got our first-ever Nintendo console with _Ocarina of Time_ . I'll always be a SEGA fan at heart due to my upbringing with the wonderfully creative and "edgy" Sega Genesis, but never let it be said that I didn't absolutely LOVE _Super Mario 64_ and then going back and playing through the classic series, along with the 3D Mario games as we got a GameCube and Wii over the years.
After the kind of year this has been and the havoc it has wreaked on my mental and emotional well-being, celebrating the 35th anniversary of Super Mario Bros. is a welcome respite. And that _Super Mario 3D All-Stars_ collection with SUPER MARIO SUNSHINE on it?! YES!

I grew up with a family that had both the Atari and the Intellivision when I was a kid. I visited the arcade frequently in my early youth after my mom was done with her shopping. But it was seeing this game at my best friend's house when he got one for Christmas of 1986 that really opened my mind to what gaming could be. And when I got my own NES the following Christmas of 87 (10 years old, 4th Grade) with Super Mario Bros., as well as The Legend of Zelda to go with it, I became even more amazed at what home gaming could be. Remember what I was coming off of when it came to home consoles. And then there was the fact that the NES was truly my console. The Atari and the Intellivision were the family's, and they were set up to the kitchen TV. This was truly my first console, and my dad hooked it up in my room that Christmas morning that I got it. I also remember buying Metroid a week later with my Christmas money. These are memories I would not trade for anything.
I now collect NES and SNES games (most complete in box), and have a total of 85 games. There are some games connected to strong memories. I can turn on Final Fantasy III (Final Fantasy VI) for the SNES, and immediately, I feel exactly the way I did seeing that intro for the first time when I was 17 and a Junior in High School in 1994. I can also strongly remember the thrill of Christmas 1988, when I managed to get Super Mario Bros. 2, Zelda II: The Adventure of Link, and Bubble Bobble that year. Again, I just turn those games on, and I vividly remember that day. That is the power of retro gaming to me.

I may have said it a while back, but I need to say it again.
Aside from certain difficult enemies to get by (worse if you're not Fire Mario), the thing that irks me about this otherwise enjoyable game (which was the staple of my childhood) is that the time counts down very fast. The worst are the levels that only have 300 "seconds"...especially 8-1, an *IMPOSSIBLY* long level to travel through in such a short time.

Video games on the Famicom/NES existed prior to SMB but they were the kind of stuff that would get you bored in, at much, half an hour. Then this came, with 32 unique levels on just a tiny 40 kb cartridge. Not only was for some time the greatest NES game, but the most advanced considering that there aren't any more complex games that don't utilize any mapper. Also, SMB doesn't feel like anything that was released on the Famicom prior to that point. It truly was a game changer.

(Video begins with a 1988 home video, showing the first time the Nerd played the NES on his birthday.)
Boy: Alright, you get one game with it. That's Super Mario Bros. and Duck Hunt. Okay, so...
    Girl (oc): I wanted that!
The Nerd: That's me, staring at a fresh Nintendo Entertainment System, right out of the box. My life was about to be changed forever. There I am, excited that the game's just been hooked up.
    Boy: I heard it!
Young James: I'm playin' it, okay?
The Nerd: And there ya have it. My first time playing NES. (Camera shows his friends) Those are my friends, watching in awe, sympathy, and shock.
Young James: (Mario loses a life) Come on, that stupid man! He wouldn't walk! (Mario falls off a cliff) Oh great, oh, why'd ya have to do that? (Screen shows Mario running, hitting the first coin block, and dying from the first Goomba. The Game Over screen appears.) AAARGH! I lose every game!
(Young James yells in slow motion, then cuts to a montage of the Nerd swearing from the first AVGN episodes)
The Nerd: FUCK! Piece of shit! ...Is diarrhea comin' outta my dick! Fuckin' horrible! Inside out asshole! (Montage of "fuck" from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles review) Fuckin' my balls! Fuck, fuck, fuck, FUUUUCK! (Montage of the Nerd drinking Rolling Rock, then an explosion effect)

Development was a culmination of their technical knowledge from working on Devil World, Excitebike and Kung Fu along with their desire to further advance the platforming "athletic game" genre they had created with their earlier games. The side-scrolling gameplay of racing game Excitebike and beat 'em up game Kung-Fu Master, the latter ported by Shigeru Miyamoto's team to the NES as Kung-Fu, were key steps towards Miyamoto's vision of an expansive side-scrolling platformer. While working on Excitebike and Kung Fu, he came up with the concept of a platformer that would have the player "strategize while scrolling sideways" over long distances, have aboveground and underground levels, and have colorful backgrounds rather than black backgrounds. Super Mario Bros. utilized the fast scrolling game engine Miyamoto's team had originally developed for Excitebike, which allowed Mario to smoothly accelerate from a walk to a run, rather than move at a constant speed like in earlier platformers.

I still think that the best way of playing Super Mario Bros. would be via the original NES console and using either the original NES controller, the NES Dogbone controller, Super Controller, the NES Advantage, NES Max, Hyperstick Controller, Hyper Variable Speed Controller, the Roll & Rocker, Supersonic: The Joystick, the U-Force, Joycard Sanusui SSS, Zinger, Zipper, Zoomer, Power Glove, the NES Satellite, the NES 4 Score, the QuickShot joystick, Maverick 2, QuickShot QS-126 Joypad, The Game Handler and/or the Capcom Fighter Power Stick - but regardless of which version you play, you owe it to yourself to experience one of the true classics of gaming.

the only two problems I have with this game is that when you move to the right you can't move back to the left and when the game is on 2 players it's never player 2's turn unless player 1 dies and when it's player 2's turn it's never player 1's turn unless player 2 dies but aside from that Super Mario Bros. is a great game.
