The WGA writers and SAG-AFTRA strike have been moving in surges of news for months. But this last couple of weeks was spiced up by Drew Barrymore and Bill Maher deciding to restart their shows they didn't even need to stop, and got CRUSHED. Despite being careful to stay within all of the strike rules, no-one can be allowed to stand against the strike and make it seem anything other than omnipotent, and so the machine moved to destroy the shows. Having backed down, Drew and Bill have now been left alone, with just some background voices still complaining. But I find it very interesting to watch in real time, 2 shows that didn't even use writers, having to bow down to the writers union, despite that same union, being the cause of all of Hollywoods woes in the first place. At this point, Hollwyoods created a monster they can't control, but I'm sure they'll be looking to in the future. But what do you think? Let me know your thoughts down below and as always, thanks for watching :)
It was the most brilliant commentary I heard in my lifetime. The fact 18 September, my birthday, date stamped 5:00pm I am commenting at 7:00pm. Brilliant. 👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿 As too, Drew Barrymore? They went after the weakest link. Can you think of a more fertile target than an actress for approval? This had not been a good year for Drew. Remember bending the knee to Dylan.😂
Love how the people who make less money than the writers have no choice about not working just so the people who mostly stuck at their jobs can fight for more money, benefits and job security.
Hear hear. There's already enough entertainment out there made by their betters that Hollywood could blink out of existence today, and there's gonna be enough older movies and shows to keep us glued to our screens for a lifetime.
The whole point of a union. Is to save up money, so that when they strike, they can pay the members. When this union are unable to do the same, then it is not a union but a money scheme.
Thank you for this. I had never quite understood the point of unions besides having the ability to shutdown a critical industry. This makes a lot more sense to me for unessential industries to even have unions. I was genuinely confused as to why so many unessential industries have unions in the first place.
@@paneraemployee12 the original Idea of a Union is to protect the workers from Bad employers and to ensure they are given fair pay and benefits. A Single voice changes nothing but a collective one can put the pressure on these companies to make deals. the unions gets payment for as OP said. The collect money, to put back into the union for a eventual strike and for other things such as if a member gets hurt or to Pay for Other benefits provided by the union. A union Has the same ability to corrupt just like any business. The bloat from upper managements sucking up all the funds and the union defending bad apples that bring the system down. A union like any business should be dissolved after a certain amount of time and replaced with new terms
@paneraemployee7549 The main point of a union is collective bargaining for minimum standards. The second point of a union is representation and conflict resolution for the undividual. The third point of a union is support during industrial action. Unfortunately unions tend to be led by people who are most interested in reason 3.
The reason that they want large writers rooms is so they can hide the talentless activists amongst the slightly more talented writers, so that they can all keep on paying their union fees.
And so everyone can share the blame when the shows fail. It's like a group project where everyone gets a C despite half the group not doing their fair share.
FYI, "Scab" is a common term for anyone who crosses a picket line. It wasn't invented by the WGA / SAG. They couldn't come up with anything that creative.
No shit. He knows that, ffs. He was just saying it's not gonna stop anyone. It's literally saying "You're not going along with the strike" Obviously you know that already. Ergo it's fucking pointless.
the real threat isn't AI, it is the fact streaming services have introduced us to high quality content made in other countries and proven popular in the US. I am not just referring to content out of Asian countries but also content out of Europe many never had the opportunity to view before.
@@mrhallman64Exactly! Now how many true classics have been generated in the last 8 years? 😂😂😂😂😂 1 2 maybe 3 movies, the rest is all trash that will be forgotten in a matter of months (mainly the superhero movies that have been recycled over and over again).
It’s funny that they’re now realising just how insignificant they are to most people! Plenty of movies and tv shows already made that I haven’t seen anyway
Most shows me and my Dad are watching are from years ago, like murder procedural *The Mentalist*, *The X-Files*, *Heroes* and big mystery show *Manifest*. Happy enough with most of them, sure and there's more than enough to keep us going.
Has anyone noticed the 'top tier' actors and writers have not said "We will take a pay cut / pay higher dues so the other people in our union can get paid more. "
I feel sorry for all the actual workers behind the cameras, but I have zero sympathy for the rest of Hollywood, and if it shut down forever I would get by just fine.
Why? They chose to work in this fucked up.woke industry. If they are technically gifted there are millions of jobs in the US outside Hollywood and hundreds of millions elsewhere. These fuckers made their choice. Much better to make real things not the diarrhoea coming out of Hollyeoood.
The people behind the camera are the ones that are having the issue. I am sure you don't care if they strike for the next 5 years. It matters to these people. Say what you will, but the arts are critical, be it bad art or good art. This viewpoint is so missing the forest for the trees.
Crew and animators, yeah. I'm actually really glad for the writers. Hopefully this will be a wake up call for those who are actually terrible to just do something else with their lives. And the ones who know theyre good, or who really love it, will have to fight to stay in it. The only problem is how many think theyre amazing that just fucking arent
You made a solid point, Hollywood is losing money because of the garbage the writers are spewing, and they are losing money because of the strikes, it's a win-win for us!
Alfred Hitchcock on actors: "Fundamentally, actors are a race apart. This group is divided into two sections: first, those who have talent and have never received any recognition for it, and, second, those who have received recognition without having any talent. Either way, they're cattle." My guess is that he had a similar take on most writers as well. "They're all cattle." Go for it Unions!!! Take another 10 years if that's what it takes!!!! You can do it!!!
Ironicaly, watching talentless hack actors and writers slowly realizing that the "peasants" don't give a shit about them is the most entertaining thing Hollywood has been involved with for the past decade.
This entire thing was just about as fortuitous for audiences/consumers as it possibly could be. Hollywood actors, writers, and directors have been so far up their own asses for so long now that they have been producing nothing but petulant sludge for over a decade. They all continuously act like their audiences are beneath them. They've used every awards show and even their individual platforms for years to try and tell us plebs how to live our lives while simultaneously calling us dusgustinh names and openly disrespecting the fact that WE are the ones who make them rich and famous. Atleast back in the day they were making amazing movies and TV shows while they were looking down on all of us but now they are nothing but a bunch of creatively bankrupt, entitled narcissists who firmly believe they are far more important then they truly are. Well, now they know we give ZERO fucks about them as individuals and all the terrible products they've been producing for far too long now. There's nothing quite like a bunch of narcissistic assholes finally figuring out that no one really gives a shit if they come or go. It's really a beautiful thing.

Funny thing about the current Hollywood writers & ChatGPT: If the WGA truly thought they'd be better than ChatGPT, they'd simply have a writing contest, to show off how superior their writers' writing skills are in comparison to AI. There can be only 2 reasons why they haven't done this so far: 1. They don't actually think they'll win 2. They couldn't come up with the idea 🤣
That's just a throw-away issue thrown in for negotiation. The real reason the strike will never end is due to streaming revenue (which the idiot writers thinks exist when it clearly doesn't)
Or 3) they are complicit in letting "the house burn" while simultaneously scrubbing for a foothold in the new format of the industry. It's interesting that Fran Drescher, with her close ties to the management of the corporations, has been spearheading the strike.
If people think AI is so much better, then remove all the copyright data it was trained on then without consent. Oh? What's that? You mean AI can't do anything at all if you remove all the copyrighted data it was trained off of?
The way the human brain works and the way ChatGPT works are two very different things. Chat GPTis inherently derivative. It provides the most likely output to an input, based on the data set it was trained on. It can’t “create,” it can only provide answers based on probable outcomes. And even then, it’s subject to error. A human being can look at a body of work, synthesize what makes it interesting or what they personal like about it, and then create something new that’s uniquely theirs. It’s not the same thing. Chat GPT could probably write a decent middle of the road romcom or action movie. It could not write something like Breaking Bad. The problem with a lot of Hollywood writers is that they lack talent and they hate the audience.
@@2012sonora Your description of a language model AI like ChatGPT is very superficial, mind you. (I'm a professional software dev for over 15 years now, I do that stuff for a living :D) This "trend" of describing ChatGPT to simply provide information based on "probability" is another way of blackbox thinking. Stating that information is derived from probability actually tells you nothing regarding the source of the information. It's like stating "probability tells me to use iron for bridge construction instead of bamboo". So the question remains or becomes: Probability of what? Probability that it burns? That it bends? That it grows? Of course the only probability that you care for would be "probability that it breaks under the load/weight". It's the same with how language models truly work. In short: No non-computer scientist has any way of understanding how ChatGPT works, but people like to think they do, so they come up with allegories. But sadly in the case of AIs this allegories are so superficial, since they are trying to explain something very technical, even in a technical context, without using any technical terms or constructs. Let me put it this way: Try explaining how a car is actually starting when you turn the ignition key, without using any technical terms or references. And in the end what you'd end up with would be something along the lines of "you turn the ignition key and that makes your car run". It's so superficial, that you could argue that you have just rephrased the question: Which is exactly what you see in all non-technical explanations of ChatGPT about "predictions" or "probability". So yes, ChatGPT works different from the human brain in some regards. But it is extremely close to how the human brain works (actually the consciousness or train of thought) in other regards. And what ChatGPT could write is not at all limited to repeating an already existing story or work. That's simply not how ChatGPT works. To drive my point home: Since the dawn of time or rather the "invention of art" people are asking the questions "where does creativity come from?" or "what is creativity"? Some argue it is simply the repetition or copying of things already seen. But of course, that can't be all, since this would mean nothing we see today (technologies, and such) could have been created, because at some point there was nothing you could copy it from. In fact, what most accurately describes creativity, is the transformation of pre-existing patterns. Like drawing a picture of a fictional alien planet. It is based on your concepts and ideas rooted in science. So you could argue that to some degree you are simply using "science" as your source and are therefore "repeating" something that already exists. While you could also argue, that this exact picture never existed anywhere in the world. And this is why you see actual developers of ChatGPT at OpenAI publicizing statements that "they didn't think ChatGPT could answer X", but it did. Or even "we don't know why it can do Y, we never actually taught it" and stuff like that. It can give you a (seemingly) creative output based on pre-existing information, it has been trained with. It can connect information sources and derive new information based on its input that hasn't been exactly specified or expressed anywhere before in this exact manner. Which, again, is what a lot of scientists think creativity is at its core. ChatGPT is no simple google search engine, nor is it a database interface. (Also note that ChatGPT did pass the touring test at the beginning of this year.) And therefore I argue, that with the state of modern Hollywood writers, you could very likely make ChatGPT write a story, which is indistinguishable from the nowadays very poor quality nonsense Hollywood writers are boring us with in recent years.
Which is funny, because a BIG part of that "walking in line" during that period of European history was being forced by pro-union Communists and Socialists like H×tler and Stalin.
I grew up going to movies. I would at times not even look to see what was playing, I would just go and watch the next movie to start. Fast forward until about 5 years ago and I just stopped going. I was tired of remakes and movies that pushed agendas that I disagreed with. Two years ago I purchased a RUclips premium membership and I have been watching TV shows from the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s. I have found so many good programs that I no longer need to go spend my money supporting people I disagree with.
Drew was trying to do the show so the others that work in industry who aren't on strike and don't make as much to be able to work and get paid. The writer's union keep on losing more support.
@@Not_Always if they still have support, it's from people who are equally as clueless about business as the WGA members. Harp on the bean counters all you want, they are the people who even ensure the artistic folk even have job in the first place.
In general: On an individual level, I have sympthy for anyone trying to get *reasonable* terms and conditions. I have none for people asking the impossible. With regard Hollywood: I despise the products that they have been putting out. All the race swapping, gender swapping, and the attacks on their paying customersm etc since 2016. The actors have been part of that. So on a group level, I have little time for Hollywood because Hollywood has little time for me. May it all fall to the ground.
@@yurikendal4868 I agree: I should have mentioned the poor writing as that is a quite significant factor. I mention the race and gender swapping because they have been on the nose and very much (in my opinion and that of many others) ideologically based. I can accept either or both for artistic reasons, but never for ideological ones. Why? Because is just means that Hollywood ends up being racist and/or sexis,t which is something which goes against the contract of civilisation that we all sign up to. The hypocrasy is astonishing.
I agree that there may be someone reasonable but... Since they are inside the industry that at best wants to reprogram society, at worst doesn't care working for/with the most morbid criminals... I care less for the individuals than Hollywood itself, because they are fundamentally the backbone of this hot pile of garbage on fire.
$7K minimum to write something like She-Hulk far exceeds "reasonable" wages. These weirdos blame the studios, but the UNIONS are the ones taking all of their money and the DEMOCRATS are the ones making everything more expensive. They are free to make their lives better, but they'd rather take away the rights of others and piss on them laughing. I have zero sympathy. They wanted this. They promote this. They financially support this. They voted for this. They attack anyone who doesn't want this. They can deal with it.
Unions were a response to abysmal working conditions and near-slave labor once, but the pendulum seems to have swung the other way in recent times. You are not wrong when you call them tyrants. Often enough they don't seem to care about the working man anymore, but their own prestige and power. Good luck to anyone caught in the middle.
The second the first union achieved its goals is when the corruption started. As long as there have been unions there have been petty tyrants using them to gain power. They are still needed as when they're working you need a tyrant to fight against another tyrant, the management. The problems arise when there isn't an enemy to fight so the union needs to justify their existence and create one.
The moment unions rose in the US, men in the Mob like Capone, Bulger, Cagliari, and countless other mobsters took them over seeing them as easier money than "protection"
I recently saw a tweet claiming that RUclips channels should be vilified for being scabs. Now is the time for RUclipsrs to gain ground on Hollywood. 🤞🏻
Forget what you heard about the strike. The strike is about one thing: the books. The union wants to open the books because they think studios are swimming in money, meanwhile the studios want to keep the books closed because they're losing money.
Why would studios care if the strikers find out they're losing money? Everyone knows they're losing money, but the money is unlimited because anyone around the globe who wants to launder money will come to Hollywood if the rates are good.
@@gorkyd7912 We know that alot of studios are losing money, but we don't know for sure why as that information is private. But if viewership counts where made public then shareholders would discover the truth; nobody is watching some of their shows despite the studio plowing hundreds of millions of dollars into them. Everybody could see exactly which products are tanking, and that would likely cause some interesting shifts in the industry. Personally, Im for it.
The reason why these people are intimidated by the unions is that they are obsessed with their social standing. Drew and Bill can't imagine trying to go to the usual LA bars and clubs they frequent and getting the stink-eye from all of their socialite "friends." Oh wait.... they want all the reward but never want to take any of the risk So these losers are demanding even more money and less risk. The solution is so simple; make your own god damn studio
Lol, yup. They always say management and shareholders do nothing, but then, when we say "OK, then quit and do your own thing" the come back asking for more of the profits, they think are there. Like, if you want the profits, buy the stock... Sometimes it goes up (Tesla Nvidia ❤) sometimes it goes down... (Disney flat for 5 years is sad.). Yet people NEVER want to risk their money on stocks. My whole liberal complex will cry about "the rich" but invest in stocks? Buy a house? Anything? No... And before you say houses are too expensive. MOVE. If you're too poor to buy a house where you live, don't live there. Not a hard concept. You're not entitled to live in California or new York.
Best thing that happened in 2023 was the writer strike. And the fact that the writers own hubris made them believe that the public opinion would be on their side and now they're finding out that nobody wants them back is hilarious and wholesome.
This isn't what's happening at all though. Please get your news from people other than this guy who isn't even aware of what is going on with the strikes.
I wonder if they'll ever realize that we don't need them or necessarily want them? We have thousands of hours of entertainment at our fingertips. Books, television, film, music, video games... going back decades. There isn't enough time in one person's life to see it all. They could disappear entirely and it wouldn't matter. New content isn't always good content.
Other than the fact that they'd have to lose the narcissism, & actually have some sense of introspection & self-reflection...? The only other things that persuades people like that- are reputation, & money: Wilde said it best, 'The only thing worse than being talked about- is not being talked about' - when you turn into some form of social pariah- you at least have the potential to be talked about, & can be kept in others' consciousness in _some_ fashion- & thus, slowly pave a way back for yourself, if so inclined- by virtue of the fact that you're remembered. The worst thing a person in Hollywood can be, is a has-been - not worth even the consideration of gossip... While all of the reporting on this can be super-entertaining, & the fact that ratings & returns on the activist-driven 'master-pieces' have gone ever-lower, _should_ *force* the studios to really think about what kind of environment they've supported & let thrive, instead of seemingly doubling-down on the same garbage ideas that audiences have repeatedly showed they *_don't_* want, & then punish those same paying audience members for the feedback - by insulting them, & acting like their money isn't needed... What would these people do, if they stopped getting the attention- that they so desperately want? I don't live in California, or America- I more or less stopped watching mainstream TV back in 2018 - if it wasn't for entertainment channels on RUclips, & the occasional article I come across on my search engine homepage- I wouldn't know about the strike. And other than sympathising with the crew & service personnel who are made to suffer for this ongoing situation, I have no reason to care how long the strike goes on...
I'm actually wondering if that's true. It wouldn't surprise me if the studios go under, the unions lose their bargaining power and instead smaller creators produce the next wave of decent material. I guess we'll see.
I'd be more sympathetic to the writers on strike if they weren't so terrible at their jobs. They've been shoving their woke identity politics and their ideological narratives down our throats for years and now, movies and show viewership is at an all time low, and they expect everybody to support them NOW?!
Drove tractor trailers for a long time and missed decades of tv and movies. I’m now going down the list of those shows and movies that I’ve wanted to watch for so long. Funny thing is this has only made me realize just how bad modern movies and television have gotten! Studios should take this opportunity to get rid of the awful people that have made their audience jump ship! Bring back people that actually have talent and pay them well by not bringing back the people that have no talent! You’ll raise pay for those that deserve it and still come out ahead by getting rid of useless wastes of space!
I was forced to be part of a union when I lived in Chicago...they gave you the illusion of choice, but they made your life hell if you didn't join and give them your money. And yes, unions are all about power and tyranny - we were on a graded pay scale, every time someone threatened strike we made marginal gains at best after negotiations concluded. I was one of those little people who actually would have gotten crushed without a paycheck if we had struck for any length of time, so I feel for the *actual* workers right now, not these spoiled brat writers and actors.
I've seen the tyranny, but to be honest, its not needed that often. The hivemind nature of unions is scarier. My wife's former union threatened to strike over an agreement difference so small that it would have taken 2 years to make up for just one week's worth lost wages. But to make things worse, they ended up taking a last-minute agreement to avoid a strike that was worse than the original offer. It shifted 1/3 of the annual pay increases into a one-time bonus, which didn't compound, and so by the end of the contract we were making notably less. But it let the union claim victory because they hit their target percentages and "saved our wages" as long as no one checked the math. Sadly, few did.
Yeah. I spent 20 in the construction trades. I was always dubious of unions. Collectivism is a race to the bottom. It is a decent gig if you are bad at your job and can't stand on your own talent.
You are right on. In a union it is discouraged to move up the ladder to management to do better in life. They need the worker ants to get their dues $$$$ where was the union during the me too? where were they these last 5 yrs since the last contract? how do they afford to put millions into Bidens campaign put hVe no money to give to these strikers? But they jave money to pay daily pay workers to walk the strike line in NY & LA?
Bill is what the English call " all mouth and no trousers". A real man wore trousers, only women wore skirts. A man who made a statement and didn't stand up for it was not worthy of wearing trousers as he had nothing there to need covering.
I really hope the studios hire non guild writers more. The exclusivity of that industry is just awful. To quote George Carlin: "It's a big club, and you ain't in it!"
The big irony is that the success of the live-action One Piece on Netflix is proof of how bloated with untalented or egotistical people the writing rooms for various popular franchises have become. There have been complaints that the show sticks too close to the manga and anime, but these are from executives and writers who have no clue what made the series popular in the first place, as evidence by them wanting to add "romance" between the Strawhat crew to the story and Eichiro Oda all but stepping on their collective necks with a massive "Not On My Watch!" - thank god he retained full creative control. The WGA is terrified of shows like One Piece because it, and others that will definitely now follow suit by sticking to the source material and catering TO the fans, are the antithesis of many of the writers who are getting paid for a job they're simply not cut out to do. Hollywood, and Western media in general, needs to have a massive cull of the bloated, untalented, politically or agenda-focused people who have infected a variety of creative industries, the writer's rooms of many productions being just a symptom of a much bigger problem.
Yep, when they refused (what sounds like) a good deal simply because they didn't get the "minimum writers rooms", it sent a clear message: They don't have the talent to actually get a job on their own merits, so the only way they can go on is if the studios are FORCED to hire them.
a rich actor has negative understanding of the numerous problems in the games industry for its laborers and consumers, and the insinuation that entitled wealthy actors might speak for the avg triple AAA contractor is a repulsive insult and should be answered with nothing less than completely resolved rejection.
Thanks! Another great video, Disparu. You've got very comprehensive coverage of this and convinced me of the union's thuggery. Some of the best strike coverage I've seen - please keep it up!
Hail to Disparu for feeding my obsession with the strikes. The nonsensical nature of these unions wrinkles my brain as I try to wrap my head around their thinking 🤔 😅 🙃 😵💫
Real artists aren’t threatened by AI because it’s just another tool to help pursue visions. As someone who has seen talented artists passed up for diversity hires, it feels cathartic for AI to replace these 2D imitations of humans.
The writers turned down a contract that offered $100,000 USD for 2 months of work. $278/hr. That would make them one of the highest paid professions in the country.
Thank you for giving me so many laughs! I remember with She Hulk how I watched 2 episodes then gave up and instead watched your reviews of every episode, which was far more fun. Same with Rings of Power and Ahsoka.
I call on anyone in hollywood to tell the writers that they're waiting until they get a deal, and then they're going on strike. You're not allowed to write scripts while the cleaningcrew strike in hollywood is going on. Or the catering services, camera people, props team, set building group, light and podium technicians,.....
This might be a dumb question but in order to make a show/movie in Hollywood do you HAVE to use union writers and actors? Because if so, that sounds like a Mafia racket
A great deal of American unions are just that, gluttonous monopolies desperate to maintain power through any means necessary. They have chokeholds on the government, therefore the businesses, therefore the consumers. It’s truly a terrible system.
They're required to use a percentage of members of SAG AFTRA, depends on the contract. Also, production companies make tons of money what kind of mafia are you comparing the union members to? A normal SAGAFTRA member makes around $22-$30/hour. A non union actor gets around $16... i think In n Out pays more hourly. SAG AFTRA is asking for an 11% increase which is like, another $3 an hour. The CEO of Paramount makes like $87,000 daily or something like that. THAT'S the Mafia.
@@beanclam Basic racketeering is when a group (like a mafia family) demands certain things (usually money) from people who may or may not need them in exchange for withholding a severe/arbitrary punishment for not paying. For example, if I went up to you in your home and said, “You need to pay me $$$ so that I can protect you from your house burning down... by accident,” that would be racketeering, as I’m forcing (threatening) you into an unsolicited business/financial agreement. Unions work the same way by forcing productions to hire their writers or actors. A production team may not want to use any of the WAG writers or SAG-AFTRA actors, but their production’s green light is contingent upon hiring enough of those people. Point is, personnel hiring is supposed to be the prerogative of the production team, not unions.
What else she said was they had contractual obligations with station partners. So if they do not fulfill their contractual obligations airing the talk shows won’t be what hurts everyone shutting them down will because they could get cancelled ensuring all the below-the-line workers really do lose their jobs. They won’t have a show to return to, including the striking writers.
I work in Visual effects industry, there are a lot of collateral damages due to the strikes here as well. When you see that a powerhouse such as Dneg (vfx of Dune, Last of Us, Harry Potter...) is having to lay off 80% of its employees and cut the salary by 25% of remaining staff, it's clearly fked up... We are talking here about hundreds of artists and technicians just for this company and thousands of families affected across the globe... Seems to me that by now the studios offers to actors and writers are more than reasonable... would be about time to end this strike.
I really hope entertainment moves on without union writer or actors. They’re overpaid crybabies who are NOT necessary. They’ve been churning out garbage for the past 10 years anyway because they’ve felt like they can phone it in forever with no threat of recourse.
You said one of the most cogent, powerful, and TRUE statements ever spoken on RUclips! "I don't prescribe to your value system, so the words you create don't mean anything to me either" Beautiful my friend! Loudboy7k
On top of their impossible demands.. the fact that WGA and SAG-AFTRA are striking together makes ever reaching a deal more impossible because even if one gets every impossible demand of THEIRS met by the studios, they need the other to also get THEIRS met. Otherwise, no deal for either then unless BOTH of their impossible demands are met.
It’ll be very interesting if this starts a broader discussion about the validity of unions in general. Imagine the backlash if the concept of unions themselves starts taking heat..
Union backlash pops up every few years, but the existence of unions is absolutely vital especially in a place like the US. If you look at the games industry right now, the numerous shitstorms that lower level employees have to deal with is so agonizing. Which is why they keep trying to form unions, and game companies try their hardest to bust them. And in general, if all the billionaire executives are actively trying to bust a union or trying to disparage striking employees , or are promoting some sort of proposition on a voter ballot (see Uber), don't fucking trust them.
@@FreedomStrike76I’m not so sure they are. Maybe there was a time during mass industrialization where workers banding together to demand they be treated with basic respect was a good thing, because industrialization was unprecedented and there were, therefore, no laws already in place to protect such workers, but such laws have long ago been put in place and are still enforced. You still must pay your workers the agreed upon salary, and working conditions must be appropriate and as safe as possible. Beyond that, unions no longer do anything good. All they do is demand more money from everyone, worker and employer alike. They nag the government on as many levels as they’re allowed to get away with, demanding yet more actions from the already heavy hand of bureaucracy to further punish business, which indirectly harms the workers employed in such businesses, and then the rest of the economy. Let people negotiate for themselves, don’t systematically dumb them down by instating a helicopter-parent organization over them to unfairly demand things for them that no one is entitled to by default. I do agree, however, that requiring union membership is probably the the function that grants unions the most destructive power in the first place.
@@DannyDevitoOffical-TrustMeBro I find it very interesting that the time communism starts rearing it's ugly head the same time you have unions first appearing, which function similar to communism; where the people on top are more equal then those at the bottom.
@@DannyDevitoOffical-TrustMeBroPeople tried negotiating for themselves then were beaten and shot at, so they formed Unions. It’s in the history books and humanity has not gotten any better since they were written. As Amazon and other companies constantly prove. The writers strike proves why there are rules against secondary strikes and pickets in the UK. Just because you want more money, it should not give you the right to block others from working in unrelated jobs.
If you thought the writing before was bad, wait until they fold to salvage the 23/24 TV season and proceed to write an entire season's worth of episodes in 3 days.
If the writing guild doesn't get back to work soon, well by my humbled calculations, the Christmas lead up period which starts in about 6 weeks will be immensely worse for them. In fact there is so much content from previous years, we could ignore their strike all the way to new years! Furthermore, Amazon and Netflix will probably start using European writers instead if they haven't already. No more woke writing, dears.
woke was created in europe (france to be more exact). It's less extreme than in the US as all things in the US must be absolutely extreme, but it's there

The worst thing that Drew did was to use "struck" instead of "stricken" as the gerundal pastparticiple of "strike". Minus 1 point Uphold the Friends of the Gerund!
If the writers come back, will we get cool movies like the 1990's again? Will we get a new Reservoir Dogs, a new Jurassic Park, a new Matrix movie, perhaps a new LoTR? Or maybe a new show like the Sopranos? Oh, wait a minute...
I’m not a fan of Drew Barrymore, I know she comes from a family of actors etc. So I was glad that she had enough balls to say it wasn’t about her, but her crew. Then the narcissistic Hollywood Acolytes condemned her for it. That should tell you something about them. They didn’t care. _At all._ They don’t care that the person who brought them their over priced oat late is close to living out of their car. They don’t care that they’re suffering, emotionally, mentally, and financially. “We’re Union Proud!” Shut up Walter, go back to making Meth. Crews could lose their homes, while these over paid (I’d use the word cosplay, but that would be an insult to cosplayers.) jackasses, have no worries about loosing their 10 bedroom, 15 bath monstrosity of a mansion(s). I do hope that other film industries leave Hollywood in the dust. What would be justice and karma would be for the Crews to strike! They deserve jobs, they deserve to work, and they deserve to find fulfilling employment elsewhere, *not* in Hollywood. Hollywood was- and has always been morally bankrupt. They deserve to metaphorically burn. They don’t deserve praise, our adoration, our time, or our money. They deserve to fade away to obscurity. If anyone, who calls them scabs, for doing the right thing for their crews ask them this: So, you want them to loose their jobs? To live out of their vehicles? To become depressed? Scared? If they answer in the negative, drop them as a friend. If they say “They need to support the writers!” Then dump them as a friend. It will show you that they too could care less if the crews loose their jobs etc. I have never thought it was a good idea to have celebrities as role models. They’re not. They show _you_ what you should not be. And that’s more important.
"Drop them as a friend" Ruining friendships over a difference in opinion on the writers strike is pretty extreme behavior. That's something you'd expect from the "woke" writers you despise so much.
@@gnarlkill1 They said nothing about despising woke writers, only about how everyone of these people are acting narcissistic which they do. Funny how anyone who is triggered immediately starts putting words in other people's mouths. Instead of using (activist/talentless) union writers for roughly $1,600 per day, studios should just call up a bunch of published authors who are used to writing complex plots & likeable characters
Or hell, even get the writers they're looking at hiring to present drafts or examples of work, half the time it seems like people are hired sight-unseen.
Tbf, a lot of the Hollywood writers are not involved in plot, but in dialogue and jokes. All the little things that make a scene or a show. That’s also why many of them need to be on set in LA and a writer’s strike can work. If it was just for plot, studios would simply ask fans to send ideas.
@@davidgantenbein9362 Maybe they _should_ - when the last decade or so of productions has increasingly looked like bad fanfiction, maybe they should look for people that *do* care about IP's, even if not 'professionals' - they sure as hell couldn't be any worse- & larger writer's rooms might make more sense, to get people to bounce ideas off of, rather than what the 'Hollywood writers' rooms' have proven to be...
@@OcarinaSapphr- Yeah, they definitely need better plot writers and better showrunners, but it doesn’t change the fact that a lot of these writers are only there for the small and daily work, which can’t be shoveled over that easily (otherwise studios would have moved that work to some sweat shop in Asia long ago).

I'm respecting writers strike, as much as they respect me as fan of The Witcher books and games, LOTR, Indy, Star wars and more others franchise that they have ruined.
DISPARU: I wish you would point out that the longer they strike, the LARGER the number of people are discovering the 75+ YEARS of 1st rate shows/movies in the archives (enough to watch 24/7 for DECADES). The Public is realizing how LITTLE they need the writers/actors.
Part of the serious problems for the WGA and having any leverage with studio is that it's not only a question of whether or not they are making money for the studios and by not working that money is not being made - but whether they're losing money for the studios, which is what has been the situation for the most part for a decade and a half, and by not being in production, not spending the overhead on active shooting stages, craftwork, specialists, and the whole rest of the architecture beyond the writing and acting talent, are they actually keeping more money in their pockets overall? There is reason to believe that such is the case. Which is a massive inversion of the way Hollywood has worked historically. Putting way too many eggs in way too few baskets means that they've been losing major gambles too often to sustain the process. The WGA is fairly directly to blame for large swaths of that. This makes their negotiations - questionable.

I personally have never been in a union that actually done any good for it's workers. They took wages, never visited or talked to anyone until they were about to get kicked out. Then they were visiting houses, giving clothing, etc. Soon as they won. The dues went up, the contracts got worse and even in one. We lost the ability to go on strike. SOOOOooo what was the point of a union after that?

That's unions in a nutshell these days. They no longer care about their members, they care about themselves.
Yep. Union dues pay for the strikes, and legal fees for the lawyers during negotiations.
@@paneraemployee12 the original Idea of a Union is to protect the workers from Bad employers and to ensure they are given fair pay and benefits.

Funny thing about the current Hollywood writers & ChatGPT:
If the WGA truly thought they'd be better than ChatGPT, they'd simply have a writing contest, to show off how superior their writers' writing skills are in comparison to AI.
There can be only 2 reasons why they haven't done this so far:
1. They don't actually think they'll win
@@2012sonora
Your description of a language model AI like ChatGPT is very superficial, mind you.
(I'm a professional software dev for over 15 years now, I do that stuff for a living :D)
This "trend" of describing ChatGPT to simply provide information based on "probability" is another way of blackbox thinking.
Let me put it this way:
Try explaining how a car is actually starting when you turn the ignition key, without using any technical terms or references.
And in the end what you'd end up with would be something along the lines of "you turn the ignition key and that makes your car run". It's so superficial, that you could argue that you have just rephrased the question:
Which is exactly what you see in all non-technical explanations of ChatGPT about "predictions" or "probability".
To drive my point home:
Since the dawn of time or rather the "invention of art" people are asking the questions "where does creativity come from?" or "what is creativity"?
(Also note that ChatGPT did pass the touring test at the beginning of this year.)
And therefore I argue, that with the state of modern Hollywood writers, you could very likely make ChatGPT write a story, which is indistinguishable from the nowadays very poor quality nonsense Hollywood writers are boring us with in recent years.

Its all poor writing. Race and gender swapping are not always bad writing but are not substitues for it
@@yurikendal4868 I agree: I should have mentioned the poor writing as that is a quite significant factor.
Ditto - Hollywood is not needed. Much, much better stuff on You Tube and others.
Recent times meaning last 30 years or so certainly or last 50 years likely?
US unions are different than any unions around the world.
The second the first union achieved its goals is when the corruption started. As long as there have been unions there have been petty tyrants using them to gain power. They are still needed as when they're working you need a tyrant to fight against another tyrant, the management. The problems arise when there isn't an enemy to fight so the union needs to justify their existence and create one.
things have changed over these 100 years
The moment unions rose in the US, men in the Mob like Capone, Bulger, Cagliari, and countless other mobsters took them over seeing them as easier money than "protection"
Well the writers don't seem to know they are losing money.
Drew and Bill can't imagine trying to go to the usual LA bars and clubs they frequent and getting the stink-eye from all of their socialite "friends." Everyone in that city is painfully pathetic and shallow.

Odd how none of these writers or actors are willing to pool their resources and take on the liability of funding films themselves. Maybe if their pay was tied to the success of the projects they work on, instead of simply collecting a paycheck and walking away...
I was literally saying "why the fuck make a union to negotiate with the 'evil studios' when you could literally just take everyone in the union and fund a studio yourself.... one that is 'worker owned.' Oh wait.... they want all the reward but never want to take any of the risk
So these losers are demanding even more money and less risk. The solution is so simple; make your own god damn studio
Yeah you would think with all this incredible talent they could produce works of art unseen for generations. Strange they'd rather do nothing.
That’s not why they are striking.

@@Not_Alwayslol, so what’s happening then? The union wanted a 5 month strike? They are flailing and it’s hilarious.
It’s fun when you can just make up whatever beliefs you want!
Those two "writers" couldn't even come up with a even slightly believable lie. I hope they never get work again. ANYWHERE!
The one thing I regret the most about the strike is that both sides can't lose.
I'm actually wondering if that's true. It wouldn't surprise me if the studios go under, the unions lose their bargaining power and instead smaller creators produce the next wave of decent material. I guess we'll see.
Oh, but they can, they can…
The biggest problem SAG and the other one has Is that the public don't care if they come back or not.
I'd be more sympathetic to the writers on strike if they weren't so terrible at their jobs. They've been shoving their woke identity politics and their ideological narratives down our throats for years and now, movies and show viewership is at an all time low, and they expect everybody to support them NOW?!
absolutely I hope their whole system burns to the ground just sick of their woke ideology
Exactly. I’m sick of woke comedies and dramas written by talentless activists. I second the call to burn it all down.
The fact that you think the writers are the one 'shoving' woke politics into content tells me you have no idea how business decisions work at all.
@@TychonAchaeSo it's people (executives?) telling the writers what to write?
Yep. I say let them all lose their jobs, then rehire the wheat in the chaff.

They need to keep some of the hens around to cluck about how everyone who doesn’t agree with The View is an alt-right Yahtzee.
“The Hollywood accents are strong with these ones.”

Yep, when they refused (what sounds like) a good deal simply because they didn't get the "minimum writers rooms", it sent a clear message:
They don't have the talent to actually get a job on their own merits, so the only way they can go on is if the studios are FORCED to hire them.
a rich actor has negative understanding of the numerous problems in the games industry for its laborers and consumers, and the insinuation that entitled wealthy actors might speak for the avg triple AAA contractor is a repulsive insult and should be answered with nothing less than completely resolved rejection.

"scabs" has been used for decades that labels those who work during a strike. Its just name calling.
"We didnt even know there was some strike" - said two people with "Writers on Strike" T-shirts... xD that is how you can summarize Hollywood writers
You don't but there would be picket lines and protests, no doubt a purple haired fatty would threaten to kill you
@@beanclam Basic racketeering is when a group (like a mafia family) demands certain things (usually money) from people who may or may not need them in exchange for withholding a severe/arbitrary punishment for not paying.

If they answer in the negative, drop them as a friend. If they say “They need to support the writers!” Then dump them as a friend. It will show you that they too could care less if the crews loose their jobs etc.

One of the ironic things about today's film industry is that California is about the only place on earth where no movies are made.
Get someone in there who can actually do the job and understand their audience. Let the toxic people holding signs, that have thoroughly corrupted our culture for the last 10 years, go bankrupt and find jobs that actually contribute to society for a change
They can learn to code? That's what the woke said I remember.
10 years!?!?!?
Try 60 years.
@@robertfarrow5853 and that's how we went from games released with one bug that was hard to find, to games riddled with bugs that get patched over and over
@@Hiraghm you think original Star Trek was "woke" and preachy? It may have been but it was written a whole lot better
There are laws against monopolies in the US. I wonder if a crafty lawer could say, launch a lawsuit against a umion for placing a monopoly on labor and engaging in unfair business practices...would be hilarious is the unions got broken up into a union of just disney workers instead of THE ENTIRE industry.
yeah and those laws aren't enforced. Antitrust laws are a meme at this point. Also no they do not apply to Unions or groups of workers
@Lawofimprobability It would still be interesting to see if it could happen, avoid the NLRB. I think other than how to build the case is the jurisdiction. No such case would EVER be allowed in a a Democrat judge jurisdiction, regardless of the merits. Dems protect Das Party above all. Still, I think its an interesting idea.
I thimk the standing for the case has to come from a corporate entity against another corporate entity, ie Universal Vs WGA LLC, for anti-competitive practices.
Not that I want the strike to end. F em. Let them fight till they are all turning tricks for crack.
The studios should present their next offer: 5% less than the previous one. Tell them the next is 7.5% less.
our last union contract negotiation, took over two years. but we are not allowed to strike, since im a public servant.
4:38 So they insist on voting for the same people over and over who aren't doing their jobs. Much like they vote in politics. The leaders of that Union aren't even doing their job. They went into this strike while having two very key positions unfilled with the two job postings on their website.
But what’s the point of paying dues if union can’t take care of them when they strike?
WGA: Rebel without a clue
The rest of the country could not care less.....
The actors need to channel Jennifer Connelly from Labyrinth, telling David Bowie “You have no power over me!”
Classic 😂👏
It would be so stupid to go after video games. Gamers absolutely do not need games from American developers.
Do you think Californians know that gamers play games not made in California?
And all this time I was thinking there was no creature more cowardly, more spineless on the face of the earth than your average Wall Street investor. Turns out, late night talk show hosts are threatening to claim that title.
The Wall Street Investor is quite brave in the sense that they are willing to accept a degree of risk for an appropriate future reward.
This is the most entertaining not woke thing that has happened in Hollyweird in months brilliant acting you can almost feel like they mean it,no blackwash no lgbtq no race swapping no gender swapping they are all represented and they are going broke for being woke what a movie what a tv show love it,well done Hollyweird, destroy your rubbish movies and tv shows
