I grabbed my grandpa's walmart spec driver from 2003 just to mess around with. I ended up hitting it super straight but about 40 yards shorter. The lower yardage didn't matter because I was able to see the green on my second shot rather than behind trees, off fairway, and in bad shape. I didn't realize his club was shorter until this video and now it all makes sense! Looks like I'll be shortening my modern driver and putting it back in the bag!
I recently switched the shafts in my PingG425 Driver and G425 3-wood. With the 3 wood shaft in my driver I am longer and much, much more accurate. A super cool side effect is my 3-wood with a driver shaft. I'm crushing this club now ! Off of the tee, downwind it is ultra long. Off the deck I picked up 10-15 more yards with the Driver shaft in the 3-wood. Additional Note : I was so pleased with the results above that I went and bought a PingG425 7-wood, and had them put a 3-wood shaft in it. The 7-wood has become an absolute weapon for me from 210 ! Win, Win, Win !! All test results are with Titleist Pro-V1 golf balls.
I went to a club maker at my local course. Wanted him to cut my drivers shaft down 2". He talked me out of it by indicating how it would change the dynamics of my shaft. That there was no guarantee against unintended consequences. So I opted against it. Instead I've been gripping down on the shaft which is working to a degree. Occasionally I straight pull the shot which seems typical when I do choke down on other clubs. At this point I'm all in on just buying a shorter shaft and putting it into my driver head.
This works when you dial it in. 5’6” without shoes here. Cut an R-flex to play at 44.25” got the head to weigh 205g, but using counterbalanced shaft. Swing 90-95mph chs. Works like a charm for dispersion and distance. Try it!
Interesting vid! Shorter may make a difference. I'm an avid golfer who's always looking for that advantage in golf. A wedge is more accurate than a 4 iron, in concept. Taylormade makes the BRNR, which I have in my bag. It's longer than a 3 wood and just as accurate. I have the Titleist TSR driver and plan on trying a 43.5 length shaft in it. Hey, if all goes south then I'll just add an extension.
I just had my driver shortened to 44.5 inches due to bad dispersion. I'm 6'1 but I have long arms. I will be guaranteed hitting 350 yards but straighter. My 3 wood was also shortened to 42.5 and i was able to get 300 yards out of it and found the fairway no problem.
Years ago, I played with a 44-inch, 7 Degree TaylorMade Driver. The caddies at Chambers Bay were astounded that a 5'8" middle-aged man could hit it as far as I did. Recently shortened my Ping 430 Max to 44 inches and purchased new heaver swing weights to bring the Driver back to D3 D4 swing weight. Let the Tests Begin!
@@dead_prez7266 44 inch playing length. Much like Rickey and Rory! Remember shorting the Driver will reduce the Swing Weight. I purchased heavier swing weights to bring my Drivers back to D3 - D4 swing weight!
@@trex9368 thank you! What will an improper swing weight result in? For example.. I’m thinking about popping in my three wood shaft to my driver for starters to try it out before I go cutting driver shafts.. playing length will probably be about 43.5”.
@@dead_prez7266 Due to the lightness of the Driver I got really quick and hit some wicked Hooks. Purchased the exact same Ping Driver shaft for $80 and weights were $25 ea. 31 and 34 Gram. Golf Shop weighed the driver to tell me which one to use.
Another solution is to choke up for accuracy. Also, tee boxes are not level for drainage reasons. You can change position to adjust up to 2 driver club lengths behind the marker. The ball must be in the tee box. Your stance can be outside the tee box.
I'm 5-foot-9 and cut 2.25 inches off my SIM. Best decision ever, hitting way more fairways. Cutting and re-gripping is actually pretty easy / straightforward process.
When shortening your driver, not only is swing weight affected but also flex. Shortening the shaft 1" will drop the swing weight by 3 points but also increase the stiffness by 1/2 a flex spec.
for Rory playing a 44" length Driver is right for a guy his height. most Drivers have a 45" playing length shaft in them when purchased which is ideal for some around 6 feet tall, pending a proper wrist to floor measurement. a 46" playing length shaft is meant for some like Dustin Johnson who is 6'4", I believe the last time he had a big win his Driver playing length was 45.75"
Cut my driver to 44 inches and my 3 wood to 41 inches. We will see how my handicap changes. Hopefully, for the better. Had some deep thought about this myself.
I use a 5 wood shaft in my aerojet my miss hits are 250 in fairway my good hits are 275 fairway swinging out of my shoes I hit 290-300 still in fairway. Shaft measures 42" so driver is playing 43 I've tried going back to reg shaft and can't come close to 5 wood shaft numbers
I've been playing with a driver length of 44.50" for the last four years. My current driver, Titleist TSi1 is at 44.50", instead of the stock length of 45.50" because it is easier for me to hit and make more FIR'S. My old TaylorMade M6 D-type was also at 44.50" instead of the stock length of 45.75". I will never play a stock length driver, ever. I will never give up accuracy for length and a poor dispersion rate.
Just an average player who shoots in the mid to high 90s but I can say I cut down my driver by an inch and it worked out great for me, personally I feel like you sacrifice a little bit of distance but the accuracy and consistency you gain is worth it
I am 86 years old when I was younger I could hit the ball to 60 to 70 without a problem younger meaning 65 today if I use is your short driver I’d be likely to hit it 125 yards so I use a driver that’s 48 inches long and I can reach 200 yards with it. I lost flexibility and some Muscle mass. And your study hall use people under 50 years of age so it works for some. I play to a 7 Handicap Thank you I like your video.
I have also been playing 43.5 inch driver since 2006. Also swing weight means absolutely nothing at all for 15+ handicappers and I couldn't tell the difference anyway.
Great question, my guess would be no because at some point the heads are to big to be hit on a short club. I think there’s a sweet spot. I’ve never heard of a pro shortening a 3 wood but I’ve heard of tons of pros shortening their driver
I believe that 99% of everyday golfers would benefit from it. The 1 percent are very tall scratch golfers. Which is probably less than 1% of golfers. Rory plays a shorter driver

Keep shortening it until you never miss the fairway. Then you will realize that every par 4 has become a par 5.

Agree 100%. I am only 5'6" and I always take off 2 inches on my driver and 3 wood. Shorter guys should even take off more than taller guys obviously!

I would love to see you test out the single length drivers that are built to be 42 like their fairway woods
I totally understand, but have you tried this test by choking down on your driver?
I originally tried choking down and didn’t like the feel of it. It would be interesting to try this test with that method as well
Pxg has shorter driver shafts I think.
I’m using one with my ping and it is def way easier to hit than my other shafts
Great vid! If I'm ordering a club from online, how would i handle the swing weight? Will I have to take it and the tape to a local shop?
I believe you would, you can get a tour length shaft and then have a shop adjust the swing weight
choking down would have the same effect?
I think there swing weight would feel different
Mini burner?
I wonder what the outcome would be with a taller player rory is under 6 foot right!?
He is!
If you were to choke up an inch or 2 on your driver would that have the same result
What about just gripping lower
So a regular shaft becomes a stiff shaft
I am going to cut an inch from my driver every week until I start hitting it 400 yards. Watch out Bryson, DJ, Rory - here I come.
😂
so ill be able to drive further than what i hit now "340"??? noooo way!!! i use pro v1's too....
Me: bought the paradym because i like blue
Maybe you all might actually HIT THE BALL 250 ydrs the shorter driver helps so much
i want it 46 so i can get closer to the hole.
I just choke up a couple of inches on each club.
If I wanna try this out without buying a new shaft, can I just slap my 3 wood shaft on my driver?
Yea for sure! Just make sure the swing weight is right
I can’t use my driver for shit, because it’s to long. Have to use my 5 iron to get on the green. Def need a shorter driver.

Shorter is always better
That's what my wife says too
when you say 44", does that mean playing length?
I believe total length of club with driver head included
Someone needs to tell Rick Shiels! 😂
Absolute bambs
Remember when you do this the shaft becomes stiffer
Robots can hit them further, that is why.
Yup just shorten your driver and you will be able to hit 350+ with accuracy on the fade and draw no problem hahahahaha
