I think all the exploits the player uses are a testament to how fucking broken the difficulty is and full of bullshit unavoidable damage, so bullshit that he has to resort to glitches or weird nooks in the levels to not be bombarded by missiles and shurikens.
+Dox Fill I think it is the fact that not all bullets hit you. Or, if you pause and select a different weapon using the d-pad before the enemy attack, I think it messes up their ai. I say this because i remember when i fought Volf and right when he was about to charge at me, i paused and switched my weapon (d-pad) and i noticed that he ran off in a different direction and not towards me. But this is my take on what happened.
The bullets are sporadic. If you look back at a minute behind, there were many of those soldiers firing at him but the bullets were moving in all directions and his movements were dodging them.
I guess you can't avoid acid damage...
