    I know a couple in their 50's from Minnesota that swear by these bikes. They owned 4 awhile ago but ended up selling one with exhaust probably cause they like them mainly stock cause they ride them all over the US hard and fast and they don't like to draw attention with loud exhaust but they buy them when they find them with under 10,000 miles (some had like under 5000 miles) then they just ride their old ones up to around 80,000-90,000 miles then sell them and start on their low mileage ones again. The best part about talking to them about these bikes was they have owned and rode all the other bikes Busas ZX14R the BMWs and basically every single bike I could think of along with a bunch they named and they said nothing does everything as well as these bikes. They are hands down the best bikes they have ever rode and they do whatever you want them to do. If you want to ride through the mountains all day they will do that. If you want to go on the long boring straight Iowa/South Dakota roads they do that also. They also said the best part about these bikes is they only need normal maintance and thats it. Oil changes lots of tires cause they ride these bikes like they stold them they aren't your adverage older sports touring speed limt style riders. They have a radar detector and use it with led indicators in both their helmets so even though the detector is only on the one bike they can stll both know when it's going off. They said one day they were clocked going around a nice bend at over 100mph and when that officer came up he was expecting a couple kids and when they took off their helmits and he seen the gray hair and how old they were he couldn't beleive it and they just told him man we are sorry but these bikes are just rediculiousy smooth and adjile so we honestlty didn't even know we were going that fast. He let them off with a warning lol.

Ive taken it to UK and the Isle of man, up thru scotland...Perfect for those roads...cruised 2 up with my wife and luggage...just seemed to be even smoother loaded up and belting along the highways over there at 140km plus...Roads here in Western Australia just dont do the bird justice...and large hoppers known as kangaroos have a tendency to jump into your line of riding...

    I have one 2004 with just 20.000 km, the problem with the Bird is that it is VERY difficult to replace. Vfr 1200 it's not as fast and powerful, Hayabusa is UGLY, FJR 1300, Concours are boats, BMW 1300 It's too heavy (and bikes are Japanese for me) The only one left is the Zx14, but looks much bigger. And none of this bikes are better built than the Bird. So, as you see, it's not easy.

    • @GoldenKnights50
      @GoldenKnights50 7 лет назад +4

      It makes me nuts. I've had one Bird. 2 zx14s sold recently. Guess what?.. Looking at another bird. Lol The Zx is impressive powerwise. Very strong. The Bird is a tad smoother some how. My lady like riding the Bird more. The build quality was better too. I never understood how. Lol but it was just build better. No squeaks, just right over all.

      How do you like the Blackbird so far? Thank you

  • @stevesmith6236
    @stevesmith6236 3 года назад +4

    The fact the XX is so incredibly smooth isn't so much that it's an inline 4 cylinder engine ( I had a Honda 919 that was VERY BUZZY!), it's because this engine has dual counter balancers.

    • @alfiospuson7165
      @alfiospuson7165 2 года назад

      Hi Steve can you please explain what is dual counter balancer thanks.

    • @stevesmith6236
      @stevesmith6236 2 года назад

      @@alfiospuson7165 For the best explanation, you should look this up on the internet. I can say that some four cylinder motorcycle engines have a single counter balancer shaft inside the engine to help eliminate normal vibrations. You will still feel vibrations sometimes in the handlebars, seat, gas tank and even the foot pegs. The XX however, has dual ( 2 of them) counter balancer shafts inside the engine which is why it's one of the smoothest inline four cylinder motorcycle engines ever produced. Hope this helps.

    Riding that Blackbird around slow town streets (though is comfortable) does not show her true nature. Exhaust, pfft, come on, everybody can and does change it. Get her tuned, get your sprockets the way you like it and you’ll be keeping up or beating most modern day superbikes. Did I mention 40 mpg?

    Ok Someone talking about my favourite subject. I think I'm qualified in saying you were a little unkind with your review as I've ridden 170,000 k's on Birds. I did 140,000 on my first tricked with Akropovic 4 into 1 titanium, power commander, suspension makeover, hugger.Blackbirds have only one fault which is the suspension. Being fair though it is now a 22 year old design with no fork adjustment and an under sprung rear shock that is adjustable. The bike really benefits from some heavier springs in the forks. The valving is fine with some slightly lighter weight oil. Ditto with heavier spring in the rear shock. I went gas which was even better when compensating for two up or luggage.The Dunlop's that come with the bike are junk and should be replaced with some dual compound tyre. I'm using Michelin road 4's which are brilliant on the bike. My wish list would be ABS and losing15 kg by replacing the exhaust with a titanium full system.Bearing in mind this is a 22 year old standard compression design a poofteenth behind a busa on a drag strip I think you have confused its mild manners with being slow. The things are very quick off the line as it would need to be to be half a second quicker to 100 than a Bugatti Veyron but then when you get to 6000 revs it just goes nuts all over again all the way to the limiter.Tough to believe this is the same bike that will happily cruise in sixth gear at 60 kph and do 400k's to a tank at highway speeds. Birds are bullet proof as my mechanic regularly points out as he used to service one with 450,000 k's on it.I bought my second bird after I'd convinced myself my first was over the hill as it had 100,000 k's more on it than I'd ever got out of any other bike. I was wrong but not as much as I was when I bought a 1200 VFR because I wanted to ride the latest and greatest. 21st century sort of stuff. If you want to pick on a bike this is the one to go for. I'd help you out but I'm not going to live long enough to cover everything.By the way my second bird is bog standard apart from the suspension. It really doesn't need all the bling to put a smile on the dial. The VFR is my commuter and the bird goes out to play.

    Had a '98 and '01 Blackbird. Both were awesome. Power is insanely smooth and insane. :) You do need an exhaust. I had Scorpion pipes which sounded sublime. Mine was a commuter primarily. Very comfortable. Rode it weekends too but it's not a hard core canyon carver like an R1/R6.

    The problem with Blackie is that unless you're doing a hundred MPH + it's just TOO easy to the point of being boring, you might as well go out and drive a car. The reason adventure bikes are so popular is because even at 60mph you still feel you're riding a motorbike.

      You need to take it out for the day and run it at 60 to 70 mph to find out what the mileage will be. I believe the 96 Blackbird is carbureted. I would look for problems with the carburetors. And of course, new plugs and a new air cleaner might be in order as well.

    R1 is inline four

    • @Dilwortha
      @Dilwortha  3 года назад

      Correct, however mine is a cross-plane crank IL4 which behaves differently to conventional IL4, it is more of a “hybrid” type thing between V-Twin and IL4 with its noise, torque delivery and smoothness

      @@Dilwortha I know that R1 crossplane engine feels more like V engine. Also you said that you have hydraulic clutch in your SV I didn't know they have those is that a mod or standard.

      It is a pretty awesome bike, not quite my style but undoubtedly excellent
      Unfortunately it is not for sale. My friend only for it around 4 months ago and will not be letting it go any time soon
      Happy hunting though!
