    The net on the Mk6 is a face veil, issued to British troops since WW2. Most are olive green some have a camouflage pattern. The tape holding it on is called "sniper tape".

      I thought it was called sniper tape, but wasn't sure. Also great to know about the net. Learn something every day!

    Mike, off topic man. I hike and camp with my East German gear I bought from you. It is surprisingly good. I was a Marine 0331 and Air Force security forces later in life and that gear was awesome but heavy.
    East German stuff is light and rugged. Thanks man.

      East German and Polish shit from the Cold War is some of the best IMO. They had to be cheap, yet effective, and look somewhat okay. Glad you like that stuff!

    For most helmets I prefer no net or cover at all, just the profile and silhouette of the bare steel helmet I find so cool. Two exceptions: For cloth covers, I have a weakness for the American HBT frog skin camo cover used by the USMC in WWII (I own two, and one Mitchell cover from Vietnam). As for nets, the only helmet I can think of that looks better with a net is the Mk III turtle helmet as worn by Canadians in WWII. I wish I had one.

    That M62 improvised cover was really cool. Love attention to these kind of things. You ever see the nets the Hungarians during WWII made?

    I remember during my year in Korea, '03-'04 supporting 2nd US Infantry Division, there were a couple infantry battalions that added cut up M81 BDU to their helmets (PASGT still at this time, with the covers that have the slots for foliage). Not sure if they used nets though. I'm sure there are some Army Vets that can give greater detail on the SOP of those battalions (I want to say 1/9 INF, and 2/9 INF, "Manchus" in both 1st and 2nd BDE of 2 ID up in Camp Casey/Hovey).

    I think my favourite helmet net (at least by appearance, I'm not sure about its practicality) that wasn't in the video was the one on the Type 90 used by the Imperial Japanese Special Naval Landing Forces.
    The diamonds look much wider (about like that chicken wire on the stahlhelm) and more taut than about anything else in the video.

    • @MikeB128
      @MikeB128  Год назад +3

      I literally made up a bunch of those for a recent film project, but sold them before I made the video. Solid nets for sure.

    If I am correct the helmet net and sand bags did originate in the First World War with the Brodie sand bag and the Adrian cover too, though I don’t believe the Germans had a helmet cover unless you count the medics one!

    • @Magicalspud

      Yes… would’ve helped if they developed one for each specific “biome” such as a whitened one for snow, the sandbag for one like Gallipoli and a green and brown mix for forests.

    The net on the british helmet i think is not issue, but I saw a lot of that scrim material about. I was in from mid 90s to mid 00s. I was still wearing the old MKVI kevvy and the issue cover had elastic foliage loops, so I dont recall anyone feeling the need to do that. May just be a thing with the later helmets. Can't be much later I guess as its DPM, not whatever the current cam is called.

    The best is both I feel. The British loved scrim and netting and in some photos of them from the troubles and falklands it looks like they’ve got half a bush on their heads. The last thing you want is for your protective equipment to accidentally give away your position through its silhouette or glare or something.
