- E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial is a 1982 American science fiction fantasy film co-produced and directed by Steven Spielberg, and written by Melissa Mathison. It features special effects by Carlo Rambaldi and Dennis Muren, and stars Henry Thomas, Dee Wallace, Robert MacNaughton, Drew Barrymore, Peter Coyote and Pat Welsh. It tells the story of Elliott (Thomas), a lonely boy who befriends an extraterrestrial, dubbed "E.T.", who is stranded on Earth. Elliott and his siblings help E.T. return home while attempting to keep him hidden from their mother and the government.
The concept was based on an imaginary friend Spielberg created after his parents' divorce in 1960. In 1980, Spielberg met Mathison and developed a new story from the stalled sci-fi horror film project Night Skies. It was filmed from September to December 1981 in California on a budget of US$10.5 million. Unlike most films, it was shot in rough chronological order, to facilitate convincing emotional performances from the young cast.
Released on June 11, 1982, by Universal Pictures, E.T was an immediate blockbuster, surpassing Star Wars to become the highest-grossing film of all time-a record it held for eleven years until Jurassic Park, another Spielberg-directed film surpassed it in 1993. It is the highest-grossing film of the 1980s. Appearing in Time's All-TIME 100 Movies, as well as the American Film Institute's original and updated lists of the best American films, critics acclaimed it as a timeless story of friendship, and it ranks as the greatest science fiction film ever made in a Rotten Tomatoes survey. In 1994, it was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant". It was re-released in 1985, and then again in 2002 to celebrate its 20th anniversary, with altered shots and additional scenes.

I remember seeing this on the Grinch 2001 DVD (and also featured in the 2001 VHS) and also featured in the 2001 VHS of Shrek!
Same here.
Same.
Same too
Same
Same as well. It scared me at first but after watching a few years after (2006 or 07) I grew up to love and embrace this beloved classic.
This is insanely nostalgic to me. I used to see this ad all the time when I watched the grinch growing up.
I used to be terrified of E.T. and it started with this trailer on my Shrek VHS. Something about the CGI version especially freaked me out.
Happy 40th Anniversary to ET: The Extra-Terrestrial!
I think I remember back in 2002 this trailer was shown before Ice Age & Spider-Man in theaters. Honestly, this trailer was terrifying because of the CGI version of E.T.
When I saw this on my Shrek VHS when I was a kid, it scared the shit out of me!
I did too!!!!!!!!! IT SCARED ME TOO
Me three.
@@Princess_-gp3epYou know, at first, I thought the whole guns being replaced by walkie talkies thing was just a joke on South Park

In 2022, it will mark the 40th anniversary of this movie.
Taken from the Grinch 2001 VHS and Shrek 2001 VHS
I was introduced to the 2002 version of E.T. before watching the original 1982 version of E.T.

40 years of Steven Spielberg's masterpiece now.
Many kids and their mothers and fathers have this movie over the years.
"I'll..be...right...here"
~E.T.
This movie's almost 40 years old. Drew Barrymore was just a kid when she was acting this movie.
2022 will mark the 40th anniversary of the movie, i hope it gets a limited re-release in theaters!
Hoofs/Fingers crossed! =)
Me too.
@@cowmissing so am I
Spielberg promised never to digitally alter any of his movies again, so if it does get re-released, at least it will be the original version, and not the 20th anniversary edition.
woq
Holy crap, i remember this. Here i am now stating e.t. is turning 40. Time flies.
I'LL! BE! RIGHT! HERE!
I remember seeing this on my Grinch 2000 dvd.
Same here
Me too.
Watched grinch on vhs with this
0:27 The original puppet is shown in the closet, even though, in the 20th anniversary edition, it had the CGI version in that scene. I guess they weren't done "fixing" the movie when this trailer was made.
Don't know why you put "fix" in quotes. I prefer the term "touch-up".
My grandma took me to see this in 2002 for it's anniversary release I was 7 years old. My first time ever seeing the movie. Today my local theatre played it as part of it's retro releases and I took her to see it, 22 years later. It was a great feeling.
2022 Anyone to mark the 40th Anniversary of E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial
Saw it tonight in IMAX 👌
That sounds fun!

ME TOO!!!!! It actually terrified me when I was 3.
Do you guys think that Universal Pictures should do another re-release for E.T.'s 40th Anniversary?, give me a thumbs up if you agree
They’re gonna be screening at a TCM festival this year. No word on a full on theatrical re-release.
It’s coming to IMAX.

Look I know many people hated the CGi version of E.T. And it scared the fuck out of me as a kid, but I don’t think it was that bad. Frankly I liked cgi E.T. I felt like he was more expressive and articulate in comparison to the puppet, and Spielberg made this choice to please the perfectionist within him, sure he regretted it, but in my opinion I don’t think there was much to regret, the film is the same, just with a cgi splash, it’s not overwhelming, it’s just different and while I’m not insulting the original fans of the 1982 film, I seriously think there shouldn’t be this much hate. I love the 20th anniversary, and I want to at least know there are some people out there who do who aren’t just being part of the crowd. I love both versions of this amazing movie. And I revere Spielberg for what he did.
He also fixed the scene of Elliot flying against the moon, where we finally see the cloak flying behind him.
At least Spielberg has admitted that this version of E.T. was a mistake and decided to ditch it entirely and gave us the option to watch the original theatrical version with the 20th Anniversary DVD release, unlike a good friend of his with another Sci-Fi classic. (Cough cough… George Lucas. Cough cough… Star Wars Special Edition.)
I recently watched the 40th year anniversary re-release on IMAX back in summer 2022. Great anniversary re-release.
I love all these old previews. It brings back so many memories. My childhood. 🥹🥹
I'd like they release a 4K with this version. Only for collection. I know the original version it's the best.
Me and my sis watched this movie so many times .
This movie still made me cry 😭😭😭
Us too! We went yesterday to see the 40th anniversary release. It's currently playing in select IMAX theaters.

You ain’t the only one.
It's hard to believe movies just came out in 2004 are celebrating their 20th anniversaries this year.
1:13-1:16 I’ll be right here.
This is one of my favorite movie trailers. I wear red for this, just like Cindy-Lou Who from _Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas_ and Lord Farquaad from _Shrek._
Taken From Dr. Seuss How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000) 2001 DVD & VHS.
I remember seeing this on the VHS for Shrek.
This trailer scared the shit outta me when I was 3, and I'm not sure why. I think that it was in the intro for Shrek, and it made me hate E.T.
I don't think that I ever even saw the movie, this trailer just made me assume that E.T. was the villain.
I kinda like the CGI in this movie but yes compared to stuff like Jurassic Park it isn’t that great
But I wouldn’t call it bad……..This 2002 version could’ve been better if they added animatronics to this version along with improving the CGI Alf it of course
1:23 Only In Theaters March 2002
Ahhh... Memories. I remember seeing this trailer when I was a little kid.
I wish they would make a sequel cuz i mean its been 42 years when are we gonna find out what happens next
If George Lucas can release the theatrical version of Star Wars, so can Steven Spielberg with the 2002 version of E.T.
Skip 1:47
Thought the Mandela effect was real it was just a different dialogue in movie he says phone home for sure I thought I had passed away and lived in parallel universe
The CGI aged poorly
Same year as Sam Raimi's Spider-Man.
0:14
And he's now in terrible unnecessary CGI!
