    As a Japanese rail fan I find it amazing that TGV PSE trainsets have racked up 10M kilometers per set and were still in good condition after 40 years.
    Our Shinkansen trains are typically retired after 12-15 years and 6M or so kilometers per set.

    • @dufonrafal
      @dufonrafal 2 года назад +5

      To be fair, they where completely refurbished two times each.
      They were still going strong and the original plan was to start retiring them in 2024 when the new "TGV M" will enter service. But because some of the parts they use are unique to them, maintaining them over 40 years after they began service was a challenge. So SNCF bought more current "Euroduplex" and had them all retired by 2019.

      @@belgianlettuce5409 Here in Canada on the Transcontinental route the coaches are all 1950's stock, refurbished in the 80s or 90s being pulled by 1980's locomotives. Don't expect to make it quick though, you have to wait for freight trains as goods are more valuable to the railways than people (in the USA too, I know), If the train is behind and the crew runs down the clock, expect to be stuck for hours while they wait for a fresh crew (because having the spares onboard is apparently too much to ask)

    Farewell and greetings from Japan! Japanese Shinkansen has a similar ticketing to TERGV: when you ride Shinkansen for only one station (or two in some intervals), you need only a local ticket plus a small surcharge (860 yen for one station and 1080 yen for two, if I'm remembering right), very cheap compared to long-distance Shinkansen tickets. This is only applicable for second class.

      The first high speed line in France was Paris - Lyon in 1981, called LGV (Ligne à Grande Vitesse, High Speed Line in french) Sud Est. TGV Sud Est can continue their trip to Marseille and Nice in a classic line after Lyon. The LGV Sud Est has been prolonged to Valence in 1994 then to Marseille in 2001. The second LGV, LGV Atlantique, Paris - Le Mans in 1989 with TGV "Atlantique", second generation of TGV (first able to ride a 300km/h, first gen of TGV Sud Est was limited to 260km/h before some modification to be able to ride at 300km/h too). During all the life of TGV, new line, new service, new generation of TGV, TGV Sud Est has been used in a lot of regions, but they have kept their original name, their "generation name". TGV Sud Est.

    The differently shaped heads of the HST result from the different speeds at which the trains are supposed to travel. They were determined classically in the wind tunnel. The ICE 1 was the “slowest” train and had a rounder nose, the first French TGV, which was supposed to be faster, already had a pointed, angular nose. Even faster or newer ones already tend to duck shapes, although these are only really necessary with the Japanese HST. - Cheers, Heinz

      There are retired because there are 40 years old ( a train is designed for 30 years lifetime)
      Outdated technology (they use DC motors, while new trains use brushless AC, for example), many components and parts are now obsolete. And, after 40 years, many parts have aged, with a higher failure rate and more costly repairs as some parts, designed to last the lifetime of the trains, are now due to be replaced and suffer failures.

    The last Tgv train had been canceled due to covid. Meanwile in poland- EP09 Locomotive painted in special livery, special train, cinema car, and movie that passengers can watch with VR goggles. All of this because of... 100th anniversary of the Warsaw Battle.

    Such a nice train, really a shame to get them out of service! At least, SNCF had refurbished them often, they look very modern and elegant. In comparison, our german ICE trains didn't improve with the years. Seats became less comfortable with every redesign and Interieur didn't change at all. For worse, years of economization nearly wrecked up the once indestructible ICE 1 sets.

    the tgv really did start the high speed train revolution in Europe because 40 years later many places in France have high speed and also other countries like Spain Italy Germany UK etc now have it and growing so thanks to the tgv (also thank the original high speed shinkansen trains in japan because we all wouldn't have high speed without it too)
