6 Common Types of Insulation on the Market

Wade is joined by TJ from Ecologic Insulation in Rhode Island to explore the pros and cons of various insulation types.
The six insulation types that will be reviewed in this video include:
Closed cell, open cell, celluolose, faced fiberglass batt, mineral wool (like Rockwool), and unfaced fiberglass batt.
Wade usually uses three of these variations frequently, but TJ will jump in to explain the benefits of each. Certain types are being used in passivehouses, some are used in conjunction with smart membranes, and some have some very poor qualities that merely stop moisture, but nothing else.
From price-point to R-value, Wade and TJ will give you a detailed run down of each insulation type.
Watch at 1.5 speed, you're welcome.
Ok...these two clearly were trying to impress each other with their knowledge. As a 1st time home owner I needed more LAMENS TERMS thought it be more informative to what I should ask my builder to use based on my year round humid temperatures
Rockwool/mineral wool insulation any day! : )
1. Moisture resistant
2. Fireproof
3. Requires minimal equipment to install (long-sleeve shirt, gloves, eye protection)
4. Good soundproofing
5. Easy to remove when renovating
And extremely toxics.
It is not waterproof!
@@bunnypastor8252 Rockwool can irritate skin and you should wear gloves and protective glasses when installing, however it’s not highly toxic.

@@laurieleannie Rockwool is moisture resistant but vapor permeable. It does not absorb water to the degree that fiberglass insulations will.
Thank you, great video👍
Where is the COST factor per sf and also the fire resistance factor ??
Might be a dumb question but what is the difference in weight of these products and is it a concern if you go with the top quality foam that it weighs to much on ceilings and walls?
Nice overview, appreciated it. Hempcrete?
A-frame house in California. The section I’m thinking about currently has a sheetrock ceiling with insulation blown on top of it in the attic. Temps can get above 100F here. Can I get away with taking out the ceiling (and therefore insulation) and install stuff directly to the inside of the roof as an insulation replacement and reasonably expect the space to not get super hot on a 100-degree day?
There's an episode of the build show about non-vented attics. It's basically talking about what you'd like to do. The attic becomes part of the conditioned space inside the house, but to make this work, that means that it needs to have air-tightness (not air-leaky).

which one of those products provide most soundproof?
Probably a toss up between the dense-packed cellulose and the rockwool.
I like the mineral wool product
Asbestos is an amazing material
@@mycool8980 Mineral wool is not asbestos. It's basalt and slag. But you are correct, asbestos is amazing. It's why it was used in many and varied ways for over a millennium. Too bad it's also a carcinogen.
“We’ll get to that (smart membrane) in a minute”... never did. Video is too short and not enough details. Costs comparing in raw materials and install labor would be nice too.
You are right, it feels like this is only half of what should be.
@@AJB-jj5qg That's because it is. They only post a snippet on RUclips. The whole video is on the build show network site.
I'm the first one to leave a comment!^^
Features of Insulation Material...I want to make it in my studio, too.
The best insulation Is Jhon Manville
