The Honest Car Review | 2020 Toyota Camry - is this the dullest car on sale today?

- Toyota is having another crack at a big saloon called Camry. It's very good and that, but Mark's not entirely sure why they're bothering.
The review's good though. Really. :-D
Full Camry review here: www.honestjohn...
Oh dear! Please don’t rely on this video for a description of how the transmission in this car works. The video describes a traditional CVT transmission. This car does not have cones. Toyota calls it an e-CVT because it’s the closest approximation to the way it works and Toyota like confusing people. The hybrid system is much cleverer, and more reliable as it doesn’t have a steel belt, using the petrol engine and two motor generator units. Think of a differential but in reverse combining power from the petrol and electric motors to turn the wheels. There are some good videos on RUclips that accurately describe how it works.
On another note, when will Toyota learn and develop a decent media system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay?
Camrys are VERY common here in Australia, almost entirely bought by Chinese people, many of whom show no symptoms of ever having passed a driving test.
:-) :-D
Not the case in NZ. The Chinese like to drive BMW , VW and Merc as they like show that they've "made it" The Indians just drive old used imported German cars that crap out to show they haven't made it. The Chinese just hate driving anything Japanese just like the poms.
The indicators don't usually work on the either.
Mark Atkinson wow I’ve got a 2016 Mercedes and Lexus and I’m Indian but I agree though loads of Indians have rust buckets mainly Honda Land Rover and vw
Been driving camry for a year and it is damn good car. Before I had bmw 5, arteon, audi 6, e class mercedes 400, so sedans are my thing. I am not saying things like camry is better, but I love it, no problems what so ever. I drove around 40000 miles in it and car is undestructible, and they did put android auto in it.
But your review was fun too watch.
they put android auto in your 2019 camry in Europe? Im looking at new camrys and that option doesn't seem to be available.
Don't believe all that rubbish about the superiority of German cars. They are noisy, uncomfortable (including terribly hard seats)and utterly unreliable. Dieselgate anyone? DSG transmission scandal? Disintegrating split mass flywheel? Rubbish VW 1.4 TSI engines with chains stretching, etc etc??? The list just goes on and on.
You can tell this car was primarily designed for the US market...TBH, I like the styling, particularly inside. Far, far better than the previous generation of Toyotas, in line with the current Corolla. For them, this improvement is a BIG step up for them. And it has a more stylish interior (especially the dash) than its Lexus brothers and sisters, which to me look weird.
I wish they had the xse variant here though
Personally I think it's a really good looking car. Definitely a big improvement on the Avensis that came before. The level of tech you get as standard is just insane and it'll easily return 50mpg in normal driving. What's more you know it will still be running flawlessly years after its so called "exciting" competition like the BMWs and Mercs are littering scrap yards.
We really need the Camry XSE V6 in the UK.
No one will buy it because unfortunately over here, UK car buyers are boring and never pick cars with fun engines 🙄
Agreed, SUV's are dull and boring.
Mate, great review, your fly was down. Top😂😊👌
he was doing the "clothes picked by his wife" for that segment
Imported to the UK because Toyota UK Middle management need something to drive.
True, Lexus were reserved for senior management. I had both and loved them all!
@@sirfulham I had a feeling they would be, I suppose the top level can pick the highest spec too.
Zerofightervi yep, although I do get a Supra as a company car once. That didn’t need speccing up, it was just awesome.
@@sirfulham I take it we're talking MK IV here?
They were very expensive new, it's a shame really because more people need to sample these cars.
I still act like a little boy when I see something rare on the roads, the Mrs just rolls her eyes.
She's used to it.
Self-charging HYBRID, not self charging EV. I don't get why the fuss?!
Nikola Milovanovic it’s the eco warriors making noise. they don’t realise the electricity that powers their car is from burning coal and the carbon footprint on manufacturing those large lithium ion battery powered cars.
my thoughts exactly :D There is no fuss. A self charging hybrid is exactly the only way to call it :D It is not an EV neither a plug in hybrid. It is a self charging hybrid that aids the ICE.
Used to be a fan. Shame not in touch with followers
The evidence suggests otherwise. Sorry to lose you though.
Typical motoring journalist, treats a Toyota saloon like its a BMW sports saloon, and doesnt get that people buy Toyota saloons for almost the opposite reasons that someone buys a sport saloon.
Did ya get nits? ;)
Had one of these as a hire car in Florida for past two weeks. That had a normal petrol engine and car play etc. It was fine as a functional thing but yeah no real sparkle in it at all.
"Moving cones"?!?...you should do your homework next time.
The Camry is the ultimate motorway cruiser. I’d have loved it when I was doing vast mileages 10 years ago. A reps dream.
It's a car for ppl who will keep it for the next 10 yeras.
Another great review Mark. I discovered your reviews about 12 months ago and have been a big fan ever since. Funny, light hearted and comprehensive - you should be congratulated on the very fine work you do. What I really appreciate though is your honesty - a rare commodity in the car review industry! All the best.
A screaming sheep... sums up that CVT perfectly!
It does not have a CVT transmission!!!!!!
All well and good, but some of us can't stand crossovers and like a proper car shaped car. I'm surprised at the lack of seat foldingness because my Lexus IS300h's back seat folds - a strange regressive step there. Oh, and Toyota don't use belts and pulleys in their hybrid E-CVT. 🤓
The Camry is just a budget IS300h.
@@jomaoliveira7949 more ES300h really. Both front wheel drive, and same powertrain.
You journalists think German stuff is amazing but it's dull as fuck.
Standard slagging off of Toyota despite having an outstanding reliability record.
And no, I don't own one
Crossovers are horrible looking things.
Did you just suggest you should buy a crossover? How very dare you... Still don't get CVT.
the camry is carwow in the car review world
Love mi Camry with apple Car Play and Android Auto.... very nice confortable reliable car... I guess I’m a Poor lexus guy 👍🏻
As Mark hinted at, a great long distance cruiser. I have driven them loooong distances around Australia and NZ and they do the business. But the UK list price is a joke, even though it is well equipped. Also, we have had a series of Toyotas in the family for 20 years and the dealers have always looked after us, even when the car was well out of warranty. Not always to case with some brands. That makes up for a lot when you have to pay for the car from your own pocket. Another good review, thanks Mark.
True, Toyota GB always price their vehicles at the top of the range. Elsewhere in the world they are much more competitively priced.
Dont care what anyone else thinks of its design, one went past me the other day on the motorway and thought it looked really classy! Might never be a strong seller in the UK but still a really good car
Totally agree, the Camry is definitely not my cup of tea but in terms of an excellent reliable car it serves it's purpose well. Starting wonder if HJ is going down the Carwow channel and pushing anything that VAG, no less yawn inducing that Toyota.
Nah, I just thought it was boring. Nothing more, nothing less. :-)
@@HonestJohncouk2000 fair enough. I prefer cars that you don't see around every corner, I would pick it over an Audi or VW any day but hey, to each their own...
How the hell do people confuse the "self charging hybrids". It is exactly what it called... A hybrid that charges itself from the engine... I mean what did people think charged the battery?? Nuclear power? Solar power?? Toyota hybrids have been around for 20 years we all know how it works. And its a good thing to call them "self charging" so to easier distinguish from "plug in hybrids". The word "hybrid" according to the dictionary - something (such as a power plant, vehicle, or electronic circuit) that has two different types of components performing essentially the same function. The word itself indicates it is a mix of 2 power plants.... If it was not using an ICE and burning fossil fuel toyota would have just called it an "electric car". Common people...
It doesn't look quite as boring as you are making out. It does make you laugh! If it had a BMW badge on the front reviewers would be wetting themselves over it! The BMW 3-Series (a lot smaller and less reliable) has hardly changed looks wise for about 20 years yet it constantly gets 5* reviews. How can that be when it is not the best for reliability? If you are looking for a 3 box saloon I think this would be OK but I agree, I hate CVT gearboxes! Why do so many Japanese companies still use them?
There is an interesting variant of the Camry the Toyota Racing Development with 300bhp body kit alloys but Toyota marketing seem to think the design and xse will attract U.K. buyers¿ who’s in charge of that division.🤔🤔🤔
Toyota CVT transmission is nothing like the explanation here. How many times in reviews the presenter says they are belt driven, do your homework before driving!
toyota's hybrid cars with don't use belts in their cvt's, they use planetary gears. CVT's with belts are used in non-hybrid cars (and scooters)
Paul Hojda No kidding. Honest John didn’t live up to his name on this. NO BELTS and NO PULLEYS in the Toyota hybrids.
He's not Honest John!
The only time I have been in a Camry has been in holiday in Dubai as a taxi and I thought they were excellent!!
"Wiz ziss Camry, you are really spoiling eueeusssss" 😂😂
Great review. “Poor mans Lexus” great comment
Yep in the same class as a Rolls Royce that bit was funny
Possibly your best review yet, mate.
Dullest review ever 👎🏻
Hilarious
Hmm... Where I'm from the Camry is only available in naturally-aspirated 2.0L and 2.5L engine options...
Brilliant review! Very informative, loved the actual criticism, and the jokes were spot on! Most other car journalists make videos that resemble commercials, and their jokes are cringeworthy.
Hi, probably worth mentioning that the active safety is not comparable to VW group competition - lane assist is just theoretical
Your unzipped fly is far too spicy for the Camry review. Maybe some else forgot to complete dressing you.
Bang on regarding the Camry. The refined sugar of the auto diaspora. No wonder it did so well for so long in North America.
It sucks that Britain doesn't get the V6 or the option of the 4 cyl with the 8speed auto.
Should've got the XSE trim which looks waaay cooler.
Talking of Walter White, there’s a Braking Bad movie coming soon on Netflix, excited much!
The fly down 😂
Video is nuts. Anyway top class banter review
2'23" footage of Mark's clothes when he's not filming 😁
lol
Harsh comment.
We so would have been best friends had we gone to the same school 😳 party on dude and keep being most excellent 🤣🤣🤣
Gets the balance between informative reviews and entertainment right
Mark, you cracked me up towards the end. As usual, keep it up, man!
Was there a moment there where you had thee fly open?
Eleven minutes on boredom - well done!!
I'm delighted to say i noticed the Ferrero Rocher music at the end!
The best car reviews on planet earth.
Cheers.
Thanks mate, appreciate it.
Great review as always. Still can't understand why this superb channel doesn't have more subscribers. Great choices of cutaways. I'm off to watch some more tales of modern motoring - thatnks for that too :-)
Cheers John.
HonestJohn.co.uk Honest John
Still considering the "natural plural" of "Prius" ... "Pria" seems to much influenced by TBBT in way? ;-)

Aaaaahooooooy! I'm Alan Partridge, and you are lisening to the Alan Partridge's Mid Morning Matters wiiiiith Alan Partridge! :D
Mark found a lot to say about the worlds dullest car!
toyotahilux2 He's the most creative car reviewer you'll find. 👍
Eletric
You beige beauty.
That's the nicest thing anyone's ever said to me.
Hey. As a few of you have pointed out, the eCVT in the Camry here doesn’t work like a standard CVT. It does behave and sound exactly like one though, so there you go. Apologies for the confusion. For more info on the exact (and no doubt riveting) inner workings of Toyota’s hybrid gearbox specifically...google it or something. 😀 Much love, Mark. X
I’m never unhappy to have one as a hire care in the US. Refined comfortable cruising, yes, but I also know my fuel bill will be low. But US roads are nothing like the ones we have here in Europe where composure round bends is real plus...
Give it 2 years and 20,000 miles and you'll pick 'em up for 40% of the new price.
Most pessimistic estimates of depreciation put it at 46% after 3 years and 36000 miles. More optimistic estimates have it keeping just over 50% of its value after five years. Reliable cars depreciate rather less than crappy German 'prestige' marques.
8:38 - Don't ask me why, but was just thinking about that TV programme the other day - anyone know what it was called? Something about regular motorway users I think. Can remember that very piece - the guy was exited about receiving a new company car. Other sales reps were given recently launched repmobiles, others had thoughts of receiving red Vauxhall Calibra's but when he turned up to collect his, they allocated him a base Maestro. He sounded suicidal.
Sorry for going off topic but thought a base Austin Maestro more interesting than the 2020 Camry.
A base Austin **is** more interesting than a Camry. It's called From A to B: Tales Of Modern Motoring. The gift that keeps on giving. :-D
Toyota, boring, beige, expensive...
all toyota hybrids, are mini cabbie/er wet dreams.
Ah, but the lack of a manual transmission means they can't drive in third gear at 15 mph, which seems to be a condition of holding a minicab licence.
Dullest, depressing, boring. Call it what you want, it makes people narcoleptic; just like the entire Toyota range (& Honda).
Just like a VW. A generic car for generic people. Only 20 times better quality than German rubish.
@@DashCamSerbia very true...
Very harsh. It’s the perfect, luxury no problem car.
No Apple car play - no thank you
Who would buy this ?
Somebody who does not care about the technology
?? This is car, not smartphone. Who else is got this wide range of hybrid cars? Most of others manufacturers in this class offers diesels. And that ancient. Second, do you have andriod auto, or auto CarPlay ?
Who cares, you could always concentrate on driving (and not killing anybody)
Nikola Milovanovic I have none of them but looking for my next car to have Apple car play .
@@ariframzan8602 and you will use it for music and navi. Because only few apps can be used in car, not all of them. And all of that you get in Camry, but built-in. I think apple carplay and android auto are some kind of fashion
Nikola Milovanovic the Apple car play and android auto is becoming common in many cars.
Apple car play I would be able to access music , podcasts maps , messages easier than looking at the mobile .
Dullest for sure !!!
Cast Iron Proof that Toyota have lost the plot. Awful to even look at, more expensive than cars which are far better than it and uses petrol to generate electricity to use to drive the car. There isnt a model of toyota I would buy, and hasnt been for something like 15 years. How are they still going???
Take the piss all you like but its nice to see something that isn't a crappy fake off roader. A fecking VW versus a Toyota? Reliability? Plus tattoos are last season
Calm down dear. 😂
10:16 Lancia Thema!
