I’ll look further on your channel for the video about joining rugs together. Btw, I love the idea of loom weaving a rug out of the plush rug fabric! I’m about to order supplies for this!
Thank you for slowing down your hand movements@19:15 timestamp Cara and the camera angle in this video is exceptional! I have found that when I go thrift store shopping and I see plush objects like blankets or plush housecoats, even bedspreads with contrasting colors, I will snag them and cut them into strips, rather than pay full price for the plush material at the fabric store! I love what you guys do! Keep up the great job!
My husband made me a weaving frame from your husband’s video. I an going to go to the second hand store and buy some of these blankets. Love your videos, you are a awesome teacher. Thank You ❤

I binge watched your videos last night/ this morning because I just found your channel last night.
Thank you!! Using a serger is a good idea -- I did wash the rug this weekend (the video is coming up next week on how the rugs hold up) -- and it did great! Thanks for sharing your suggestion!
Kara you did a super job of demo'ing this rug. The video angles were perfect and the motions of your hands and fingers were easy to see and understand. Muscle memory that comes with repeation is sometimes hard to explain but you did great. I am anxious to see what else you have in store to share. Thanks for another great DIY.
Thank you so much for the way you did this video! I've watched your other ones and just couldn't figure out exactly how you were going through the warp string. This solved the problem! 👍

Thank you for your easy to follow instructions! We are expecting our first grandchild in October and this would be perfect in front of the crib.. or make 2 and join together for a soft play mat.
What a great idea -- I love that! You may have already seen our video on how to join the rugs -- but here it is in case you need it. Thanks for the idea! ruclips.net/video/skwqTcOQPgg/видео.html Congrats on your grandchild!!
Cant wait to try your methods.I am doing my first rug now but the other tutorials ( and the person who started this one) treated each warp as one, not splitting. Seems that would give a better pattern.
Wow that would be great for a weighted blanket like you said before it is really heavy 😊just came across your channel last night and subscribe to day because i think you expanding what you are doing is great because thats is what i need and when you do the close up that is great 😊

I figured out, through your great instructions, how to weave into the edge with the steel rod, took me awhile, but, i got it, I am purposely making mistakes on this, a training rug, to teach me what to look for, and how to fix it as I weave, I want to make a very nice fleece rug for christmas, I am also trying out different color combinations, to see what looks best, thanks again for all the emails, and your great instructions.
I love your teal rug, looks great, good instructions,, I have made a frame/loom, thats completed, and I really like how you twisted the weave, gives a thick quality, yep, the first row is the set up for the rest of the rug, geez, one could weave a plush velvet, anyway, thanks again for your time.
I can't wait to do this, My loom is being made and will hopefully be finished soon. Appreciate your tutorials both how to build and the weaving. An excited thank you!!
Beautiful... I was scrolling and ran up on this DIY along with weaving other stuff as well. I didn't realize how easy this hobby could be and I am so excited to get started in doing these projects. Just found your channel. Very interesting. Years ago I made a toothbrush rug that I loved but when I went to make another, years later I couldn't get it going right. Anyhow, seeing you sitting on the floor reminds me that for me to be on the floor is a major problem at our haouse. I have severe arthritis and can no longer get myself up and depending on how I fell, my husband can't get me up eit her. Once at 3AM I fell and we ended up having to cal t he ambulance team and it cost us $450!!! So I will look for ideas that I can do while sitting.LOL.I have been working at determining which craft s I can do and which I can't. Tonight I scratched off crocheting as I couldn't hold the yarn in my left hand and put tension on it as my fingers are too dist orted now.
Love this! You did a great job of zooming in and slowing down to show how to go around the rods and finish the last row. Please give us an update after you wash the plush rug. I worry about all of the "fuzzies" in the washing machine and a potentially "vanishing" rug. 😂
It turned out beautiful and looks so heavy. I have one that same color blue. Blanket that is. Makes me want to cut it up and go buy a gray one and make rugs now haha. I loved this vid. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us all. Just found your channel and subscribed to it. I really really enjoyed watching this.
I love this rug and I can just imagine how soft it is. How did it come out in the wash? I have multiple of those blankets in so many colors and I crochet as well, about a year ago my father n law and I built a new front deck on their house and then afterwards he knews I was wanting a weaving loom for rugs and we made one that looks almost identical to yours. I have been searching for a great video that you can see step by step and this is the best one I've found so far and I understand everything you did and I'm so excited to get started since I have everything needed and its a rainy day. God Bless You and Your Family. Thank you so much for an amazing tutorial.
I am so excited for you!!! This rug has been washed numerous times - it washes up wonderfully!! I just put them on delicate and line dry. Let me know how your projects go! Thank you for your sweet comments!
Hi Kara. I love all of your rug videos with these looms. I just had one question about the cotton Warp. How does the rug come out after you wash it? With your warp being cotton and the weft a non cotton, does it shrink up at all? And how do you dry your rugs... on the line or in the dryer? Thank you again for all of your wonderful videos. You are a very talented craft person.
My warp is usually washed first, because they are typically sheets. But shrinking a little wouldn't be too bad - it would make a nice dense rug. Here is a video on how we wash the rugs. They turn out incredible! ruclips.net/video/zCDsES-AVmo/видео.html
I finished my loom, started to weave my strips of material, my loom measures 25''x40'', I going to make a smaller one, 18'' x 30'', already planning for gifts in December. thanks again for showing how this works.
@@DIYOnTheHouse currently, very slowly, I just keep weaving, if I get stuck, I look at the videohaving trouble with the steel rods being used as the first and last warp cord, I'll figure it out
When I was a teen, I slept under a thick, heavy, woven cotton blanket my friend’s grandmother made weaving strips of cotton fabric from old clothes and bed sheets. It seems to be very similar to how you make rugs. I’d like to see you weave a blanket, maybe twin size, that can be washed and dried in a regular home washing machine. I’ve always wanted to make myself a blanket like that.
Hmmm - I am trying to think how I could do it - probably join them together, but how to make it more blanket weight vs rug weight. I may accept that challenge?? Let me start brainstorming!
Can you use ANY fabric for the warping fabric like in the regular rag rug video? Or any "string" like in this video? Does it have to be a cotton yarn? Or can it be a regular yarn? What would be the difference if a reg yarn were used?! Can we use literally ANY FABRIC? I have some chiffon fabric I used for picture backdrops that I no longer need, is it possible to use that? Thank you SO MUCH FOR THE TUTORIALS ESPECIALLY ON HOW TO MAKE THE LOOMS!! I AM SO HAPPY I CAME ACROSS YOUR CHANNEL!!!
It can be any yarn -- and any fabric. I think if you mix too bulky of warp and weaving -- it might not be super tight -- but it will be super thick. I love experimenting with fabric -- I just don't like really stringy fabrics that ravel a ton -- those are a pain!
@@DIYOnTheHouse Good Morning thank you does it matter what color I use or what name brand I use I am all ready to start I had my neighbour make me the frame with your directions very excited to started you are amazing 😁😁
I haven't washed it yet! I have no doubt it will shed some -- just like the blankets did when I washed them. But I won't be putting it in the dryer -- I will just line dry it.
kara looks like you been weaving for quite some time... i made a frame with nails also . i have to dig it back out again,, i saw a video from im thinking a 3rd world country using grasses....so i got the bright idea,,,, why not baling twine from hay bales.. obvoiusly... for outside use ..like door ways....i have got 3 hefty garbage bags of twine that i trimmed , cut out the knots and picked through , to get the best ones..and bagged them ,,and then.... life happened....its sat for yrs. from what videos ive scanned on your channel, i havent seen anything outside of cloth material...and no i havent even tried the twine..so i have no idea how this would work/hold up ...any thoughts? i was even considering thick yarn they make scarfs from that are plushie.. but wasnt sure on that either...but i know from watching you....pretty much any material could be weaveable.. thank you for another great video;];];] that rug looks like pure heaven!!!!! great job!!!! need to sit and catch up on the rest of your videos;];];] stay safe;];]
Funny, you read my mind! We have been testing out options for a welcome type mat -- maybe out of jute and twine. Just haven't came up with the right combination to make it look good. If you have more ideas, I would love to hear them!
Baling twine! Hadn’t thought of that...we have lots just sitting there, esp after winter feeding! Definitely going to try this and will let you know. Thx for the idea!
I’ve enjoyed watching all of your videos. I have made my loom according to your video. What kind of fabric is best? I bought some discounted fabric and I ripped my strips however it frays a lot. Is there a type of fabric that is better than another (less fray)?
It was a double layered blanket that I used half of, and about a 1/3 of another .... so I would say around 1, depending on how many colors you were going to do.
Thank you for a wonderful program, so informative and useful. I got hubby to make the looms as per your links and have made some items, mostly as gifts, xxx. I would like to make bathroom mats using old towels, do you think it will work? Will I have the same problem with the loose bits falling off? Do you think it is advisable? Maybe also use yarn instead of material warping?
Thank you!! I think cotton yarn would be a good idea for the warp. I am getting ready to try it on a denim jean rug - because I think it would be too bulky otherwise. Maybe try putting the towels in the dryer after you cut them - see if that will knock off some bits. Let me know how it goes!!
You can leave the backing on -- I use cold water -- I don't put them in the dryer. I am anticipating when I wash this plush rug for the first time, there will be some fuzzies! 😊
I guess that each rug takes 6 - 8 hours of weaving, not including the prep of the fabric. I usually do it while watching t.v. - so it also depends how good the t.v. show is!! Have fun!
I have a store bought woollen throw that is old and worn. It is special to me and I have been looking for some way to reuse it. Do you think it would work to weave with or would it unravel when I cut it into strips.
Question. I have been following and watching so many of your videos on loom rag rugs. I finally got my loom made but was wanting to try a rug using fleece. Not quite this fluffy just general fleece. Would I still want to use a thinner warp material like in this rug? Or should I go thicker? This is my first one and I’m definitely not sure what I’m doing. Any help would be amazing. Thanks so much for all you do. I LOVE your videos!!
Thank you!!! I think both would work. Thicker warp makes a thicker rug - if you are wanting a more flexible rug, I would do cotton string. If it were me, I would probably do string, and weave a couple rows and see what I thought of the thickness. I would love to see pictures - you can email them to diyonthehouse@gmail.com. Have fun!!!
@@DIYOnTheHouse thank you so much for getting back to me! I’m hoping to get started tonight. Thanks again for you wonderful videos that give me the courage to try it!! I’m an avid crocheter but love all sorts of crafting. Can’t wait to try this!
I so want to try this. Where can I buy a loom like the one you use for videos. Or a kit I can put together with all the bits and pieces included. If ever you sell these looms I would be in line to get one from you. Thanks, brilliant idea and video
We don't sell the looms -- but here is a video on how you can make one ruclips.net/video/v2c_Agdw068/видео.html -- with a few tools, you can make your own! The rugs are really fun to make!
I’ve recently found your channel and I absolutely LOVE your teaching. You make it so clear to know how to do the weaving! I am excited to try all these different sizes and materials. Just an FYI on the videos. I don’t know if you notice or not but you pronounce the word “across” as “acrost .” It’s not going to keep me from watching but it is hard to hear.
@@DIYOnTheHouse thanks for your time, so go with the 12-16 ply for the warp? Also I did a mode to my frame, my finish nails are rough, don't know why, so I put clear shrink tube over the nails, heated the shrink tube, to conform to the nail, now the warp line(s) just slide off, with no catching of the warp.
I got fleece blankets from Goodwill because they don't make the fuzzies. Fleece is still soft, but it doesn't fray out. When you cut it into strips. Just a frugal idea 🤷🏼♀️
Pretty easy to calculate the warp - but the weft is nearly impossible. If I am doing a designated fabric (versus scraps) I make sure I have at lease 3 -4 yards available.
I am actually getting ready to start one. I bought flannel during the Christmas sales - I have it washed and pressed, and getting ready to start cutting! I am excited to see how it turns out!
I am about to find out -- I have all of the supplies to make a knit rug out of t-shirts and knit fabric -- can't wait to see!! I will post a video as soon as I get it done!
Aren't the old time rag rugs made out of more knit fabric? I remember my mom used to buy rag rugs from a recluse old woman, I know they were knit they had a bit of stretch to them but not much! The ends were frayed tho as if she cut the warp fabric off instead of leaving it looped! Either way my mom used to pay ALOT of money for those rugs!! I was amazed... 🤪🤪 now I know why!
They were made from old clothing back in the day...I have one that's made from old polyester clothing, it's bright pretty colors but it was crocheted and the strips are joined the same way you join them.. I want to try re-building it using your method or using the old toothbrush rug method. I haven't decided which..
How much fuzz came out in the washer and dryer? I once had a blue plush blanket and a red plush blanket washed in the same load, and the red one was filled with blue fuzzies and the blue one was filled with red fuzzies. That would be my concern.
I haven't washed it yet! I have no doubt it will shed some -- just like the blankets did when I washed them. But I won't be putting it in the dryer -- I will just line dry it.
Can you explain what do you mean by making the ends offset? Does that just mean that you make the long pieces different lengths so that they don’t end at the same place on the rug every time?
If you start by cutting one weaving strip shorter, so the joining knots don't lay right on top of each other, the rest of the joining areas should be staggered. It isn't the end of the world if they line up, it just makes a smoother rug.
Great video on the weaving process. But do consider using natural fibers like wool that is sustainable instead of the plush fabric as it is so bad for the environment given that it is made from petroleum and the oil industry. Cotton fleece works if you want natural.
If you love weaving -- check out this video on how to join rugs together! ruclips.net/video/xokI9laer0k/видео.html

Yes, you are exactly right! Here is a video showing how I do that! ruclips.net/video/skwqTcOQPgg/видео.html
Amazing ! Easy and clear instructions
Glad it was helpful!
They turn out incredible! ruclips.net/video/zCDsES-AVmo/видео.html
love the colour comination.Thanks.
Thank you! Cheers!
Wow! So impressed ! New subscriber!😊
Yay! Thank you!
love to watch your videos.will try for sure.
Glad you like them!
I finished my loom, started to weave my strips of material, my loom measures 25''x40'', I going to make a smaller one, 18'' x 30'', already planning for gifts in December. thanks again for showing how this works.
Exciting!! Keep us posted on how it goes!
This is a reminder to re visit that idea 😀
I see some weavers end in the middle. Seems like an easier finish, am wondering why you don’t. Thanks, great video!!!
I do both -- I don't have a preference, either works. I go in the middle on this video ruclips.net/video/XCbkyTvYpo8/видео.html
Gòod Morning I have watched your video many times can you well me what size cotton yarn are you using please 😀😀
Sure - it is the thick cotton, sometimes it is called Sugar and Cream - I believe it is a Bulky 4 rating.
@@DIYOnTheHouse Good Morning thank you does it matter what color I use or what name brand I use I am all ready to start I had my neighbour make me the frame with your directions very excited to started you are amazing 😁😁
Love the videos. Rug looks Fantastic!
Thank you! I truly appreciate that!
merci
καλημερα!ευχαριστουμε!
I adore this! Thank you! Does the fabric continue to shed after washing and during use?
I haven't washed it yet! I have no doubt it will shed some -- just like the blankets did when I washed them. But I won't be putting it in the dryer -- I will just line dry it.
Thanks 🌸
Thanks dear!
You're welcome 😊
I don't think I can set like you do. Have you thought about a stand for your loom?
You read my mind - I have been trying to dream up something that would work for that!
That looks like a good idea. I love it!
Glad you like it!
kara looks like you been weaving for quite some time... i made a frame with nails also . i have to dig it back out again,, i saw a video from im thinking a 3rd world country using grasses....so i got the bright idea,,,, why not baling twine from hay bales.. obvoiusly... for outside use ..like door ways....i have got 3 hefty garbage bags of twine that i trimmed , cut out the knots and picked through , to get the best ones..and bagged them ,,and then.... life happened....its sat for yrs. from what videos ive scanned on your channel, i havent seen anything outside of cloth material...and no i havent even tried the twine..so i have no idea how this would work/hold up ...any thoughts? i was even considering thick yarn they make scarfs from that are plushie.. but wasnt sure on that either...but i know from watching you....pretty much any material could be weaveable.. thank you for another great video;];];] that rug looks like pure heaven!!!!! great job!!!! need to sit and catch up on the rest of your videos;];];] stay safe;];]
Fraying does drive you crazy when weaving. I find that the more cotton the fabric has, the better. I love cotton sheets from the thrift store.
@@DIYOnTheHouse thank you very much
This rug looks so soft. I would love it in front of the kitchen sink. How many blankets did it take?
Thank you for your wonderful and inspiring videos. My question is how did this rug wash and wear? Any different than the rag rugs?
It washed up GREAT! I just do it on delicate and line dry it.
Sooo? You can wash it in the washing machine with the backing still attached? On cold or warm water? But do you put it in the dryer? ❤🌅🌵
You can leave the backing on -- I use cold water -- I don't put them in the dryer. I am anticipating when I wash this plush rug for the first time, there will be some fuzzies! 😊
How long would this process take, both if I'm a complete beginner and if I keep doing this and get really fast at it?
I guess that each rug takes 6 - 8 hours of weaving, not including the prep of the fabric. I usually do it while watching t.v. - so it also depends how good the t.v. show is!! Have fun!
Is it washable with the shelf liner attached? What about drying?
Yes - wash with the liner on - then line dry. Here is a video showing washing them ruclips.net/video/zCDsES-AVmo/видео.html
I have a store bought woollen throw that is old and worn. It is special to me and I have been looking for some way to reuse it. Do you think it would work to weave with or would it unravel when I cut it into strips.
I fear it may unravel?? If you try it let me know, I would love to know if it worked!
Am just.anxious to make.did.rug.am.going get aframe make
Fantastic!!
Love this idea! Can I ask where you bought the metal rods to put on the looms?
You can find them in the fastener section at the hardware store -- we have purchased them from Ace, Home Depot, and Lowes -- they are 1/8" steel rods.
You can also find them at Menards in the welding/sheet metal area. They have ALOT of different sizes and lengths.
It's a midwestern U.S. thing. I have had that comment so many times, If I could edit the video I would.
what would you suggest for a cotton twine? 10 ply, 12 ply, 16 ply?, bought in a cone
I would go mid range, cotton twine is pretty flimsy, but would work great for these projects!
Can I do this with yarn?
Sure - here is a video on using string and yarn ruclips.net/video/iYCa3FHPxEg/видео.html
I got fleece blankets from Goodwill because they don't make the fuzzies. Fleece is still soft, but it doesn't fray out. When you cut it into strips. Just a frugal idea 🤷🏼♀️
I actually just did a fleece one -- it turned out great!!
So the beginning and the end you go through the warping, no other time?
Exactly!! That way your rows won't slide off!
I had a question on the backing you use. Does it come off when you wash the rugs?
No, you can leave it on. Here is a video showing how we wash them ruclips.net/video/zCDsES-AVmo/видео.html
When you wash your rug if you have used cotton yarn it will shrink and the blanket material will not. So wash your rugs in cold water only!
SUPER true!!
So only the first and last row you split the yarn? And the second row you don’t? How do you wash it with the back on it?
Exactly!! Let me know if you have any other questions!
Where can you get the steel rods?
We find them at the hardware store in the fastener department - ask for 1/8" steel rods.
How do you calculate how much fabric you need?
Pretty easy to calculate the warp - but the weft is nearly impossible. If I am doing a designated fabric (versus scraps) I make sure I have at lease 3 -4 yards available.
@ thank you
Have you used flannel for your rugs??
I am actually getting ready to start one. I bought flannel during the Christmas sales - I have it washed and pressed, and getting ready to start cutting! I am excited to see how it turns out!
do these rugs do well using old t-shirts or does the material stretch too much?
I am sure it will be a solo item -- or possibly with some work jeans!! I will keep you posted!
After you washed it did it shed anymore?
I haven't washed it yet! I have no doubt it will shed some -- just like the blankets did when I washed them. But I won't be putting it in the dryer -- I will just line dry it.
Can you give me a idea of how many yards of material is needed??
The blankets I used were 'throw' size -- combined, I probably used a little over one complete throw size.
@@DIYOnTheHouse If I was doing a rug with material how many yards of fabric do they take to do a rug this size?
Quanto? valor?
How many blankets per rug?
It depends on the size of your blankets - and if you want multiple colors. This was one blanket, that had two layers.
i dont have side rods, please let me know.
You can find them in the fastener department at the hardware store -- 1/8" steel rods.
A essayer ????
Monique P💕
ahhh, might check the 1/8'' steel rod, looks to me more like 3/16''
Either would work!👍
Can you explain what do you mean by making the ends offset? Does that just mean that you make the long pieces different lengths so that they don’t end at the same place on the rug every time?
If you start by cutting one weaving strip shorter, so the joining knots don't lay right on top of each other, the rest of the joining areas should be staggered. It isn't the end of the world if they line up, it just makes a smoother rug.
sorry, I should have said for the warp line.
Great video on the weaving process. But do consider using natural fibers like wool that is sustainable instead of the plush fabric as it is so bad for the environment given that it is made from petroleum and the oil industry. Cotton fleece works if you want natural.
I recycled blankets for the rug - that works great for the environment too!
Have you tried washing your strips before you make your rugs -you should get rid of the pieces flying all over
Great idea Penny!
You ever get tired or painful hands/fingers from doing this?
Not my hands or fingers - usually my shoulders!
