My dad worked on the Fingal line from 1970 to 1985 ...retired due to health issue mid 1985.. He was ganger operating out of St.Marys most of that time ..The last couple of years he had to drive to Fingal as in 1983 they closed the track between St, Marys and Fingal ...dumbest thing they ever did .. In it's heyday there was general freight , passengers , coal and logs shifted daily by rail ...great days ..They also had the much bigger Z Class locos too from the early to mid 1970s...
Hi Rod. Did the Z's actually go to St Mary's? If only I had some video of when the line was still in operation all the way to St Marys. If you are anyone you know has any pics from back then, lets know. Cheers
Conara Junction back in 88. Freezing nights but the station had the last open fire which burnt black coal (smoldered) in the open fireplace. Huddled over it waiting for the Launceston to Hobart train to arrive late at night.
Great video, I gather any speed over 60KMh is considered "High Speed" running in Tasmania? Beautiful scenery. 864 is still going strong, it was out at Tottenham NSW the other week loading grain for Qube Logistics. Great work, thank you.
@@tedbear4243 If you go to my You Tube page just type in 872, 864 or 852 into the search, plenty of video of them on the Tottenham NSW branch earning their keep.
It is 2022 and I want to know why there are no passenger trains from Davenport to Hobart in this day and age. It seems like they are stuck in 1850 when they had no trains in Australia. Perhaps there are too many Greens supporters in Tassie. ( They would prefer 500 cars on the road instead of 1 train.)
I love how these Class Y are based on the EE Class 20 B.R. locomotives.
The iconic Launceston workshops built Y class. Every drivers ‘pedal’ nightmare, but a great mainstay of the system

Great film...well done. The last interesting years of the Tasmanian railways and the people who were part of it.
Cheers. Ive always liked getting workers in my shots - they are an important part of it all.

Ah I love the sound of a Y throat in any notch or acceleration and the yellow/black just makes them sound menacing.
The Y's always sounded impatient to get into action when idling!
Brilliant video 👍🏼
Cheers
At least the Fingal branch seems to be still in operation for the mine?
The best job
Good to see Pop’s old video player is being put to good use!
I'm not your pop, I'm not old enough. Yet!
@@tedbear4243 haha thankfully no! But it seems to be working well for you, no point me having it since I don’t even have a tv!
Brilliant!
Cheers

Thx again Dave. Yes, anything over 60 in Tas is a 'fasten your seat belt' moment!
Would be great to see 864 at work out west.

Za class was that an ex 2350 or 2370 class from Queensland original
The Za's (and Z's) were built for Tas. The ex QR 2350's (and 2370's) were very similar to the Za's and became ZB's when moved to Tas.
Timeless
As Ive said to a few others, if only we had quality digital recording devices back then, or even easier access to Betacam SP gear

Our politicians are pathetic.
