Loved seeing the fly shunting kicking wagons. The 1300class EE's were good old buses, I remember going to work with Dad on them in the early 80's. He reckoned he was able to run time off on the mails between Gympie and Bundaberg no worries with these. The 2350/2370's were the most powerful Diesels QR had at that time, but they were prone to wheel standing and losing their feet til QR derated them. All them sent down to Tassie, and if I'm not mistaken, all no longer in service. Thanks for taking me down memory lane. Cheers.
They were GREAT times in Tassy late 1980 to early 1990's. A community friendly railway. Midnight cab rides Launceston to Conara, A bit of a drive of the ZB back from the Long Reach chip mill at 2 am. Cab rides on the North East over the Billy Cock, ZC and ZBs pushing the manferns aside. Shunts at Herrick and Blumont. Stopping to give the local Lilydale kids a cab ride and dropping then off at the next crossing up the hill. Storming out of Denison Gorge on slippery rails. Loved it.
Most enjoyable, thanks for sharing. Just had a look on the map, looks like those lines to the Nth West are closed. Such a shame when that happens. Cheers.
Thx Mots. Its nice to finally be able to share all this stuff. Had a lot of trouble getting set up properly to digitise all this material. Got quite a lot to go yet. Yes, the line west of Burnie is now closed and has been for some time, unfortunately.
Love the sound of English Electric's. At 35:25 is that sand being released for traction or is it overflow water from the radiator? It'd looks more like sand and dust than hot water and steam. Great footage.
Totally agree re EE sound :-) Not entirely sure what that is at 35:25, well spotted. The poor old EE unit was about buggared tho, I do remember that much!
Y2 sounds like an English Electric or Paxman powered? Fascinating insight into the days before OH&S, especially "loose shunting" and riding on the wagons, one would get the sack for that these days! Reminds me of the old SRA days in NSW, where anything goes, the job got done and no one got killed doing it. Pity the SAR 830 class ALCO's weren't filmed during their tenure in Tasmania. Thank you, most enjoyable.
I saw a documentry on shunters at Darling Harbour (NSW) the Railways turned a blind eye to practices until there was an incident and they threw the rule book at you.
Hearing the old 1300, 2350 and 2370 class English diesel electrics working there final year's at least when they were at the end of there working they proved there worth through and through 57:40 bouncing around

I remember watching the remote control loco shunting Hobart yard in late nineties.

Thanks again Dave. There will be some 830 class material up soonish. Stay tuned. Plenty to come yet.
Superb, thoroughly enjoyed that!

There is some real “old school” shunting there.
Imagine trying some of it today!
FANTASTIC!!
Magnificent!

A far cry from when they used to haul the Westlander to Charleville
Proper shunters!
Precisely :-)
A young Greg Cooper
