    Before retiring and moving to a flat with no room for my extensive collection, or loft for the layout, I had one of the original Mainline Collet Goods in the lined BR Green like yours (marketed as 'by Palitoy').
    Back then, they were so much ahead of the competition. Their painting was so much better, as was the detail, and to see daylight under the boiler where many competitors still had part of the body moulding was incredible.
    I bought quite a few models at the time because my local retailer was closing down and selling all stock at half the marked price.
    Although I can't remember what I paid for it at the time, I also bought a BR experimental livery ex-LMS Patriot Class for a ridiculously cheap £13 (half the £26 it was originally marked up at), so you can only imagine how little I paid for the Collet!
    If my memory is correct, I think that I paid £7.50 for a J72 (Joem) at the same time.

    Hi Sam. The tender on the ‘newer’ version is a ROD ( Railway Operations Department) tender. Some collett goods had these to increase fuel capacity after the war. I believe the real tenders originated from a Great Central design.

    • @JohnDavies-cn3ro
      @JohnDavies-cn3ro Год назад +5

      Correct - the ROD's (Robinson GCR heavy goods locos, built as a WD standard in the Great War) were sold off cheaply - very cheaply - afterwards. I think the GWR bought 100, brought 50 up to their spec with Swindon standard fittings such as safety valves, and dismantled the others as 'spares' for what was an otherwise non-standard type. The tenders in particular went behind anything that needed one - Collett goods and some Aberdares received them. As Bachmann have a mould for a Robinson tender its a good change.

    • @AidenGough
      @AidenGough Год назад +2

      Yes they were indeed Great Central designs. They were designed by Robinson who also designed the 2-8-0 ROD loco motive "04" class.

    • @alanfbrookes9771
      @alanfbrookes9771 Год назад +2

      Since the majority did not run with the ROD tender I think it was a marketting error for Bachmann to model a version that was not standard.

    • @CaseyJonesNumber1
      @CaseyJonesNumber1 Год назад

      @@alanfbrookes9771hardly a "marketing error" - the 2251 class ran with several different tender types during their lifetimes, and at no time was the whole class running with identical tenders. You only have to look up photos of them to see that.

    Hi Sam. Just an FYI: Accurascale have just announced a new Pannier Tank in their line (OO scale, of course.) According to their video (here on RUclips), it’ll have quite a lot of cab detail, lit firebox, and class-specific window glazing, among others. It remains to see how much it’ll cost. And, yes, I suspect it has sprung buffers, so Sam can get his jollies. 😆

    Hi Sam, I had this as a Mainline model back in the day and I was amazed with the wire handrails! It was a BR lined black version and my first ever tender locomotive, which I traded in at Hattons only last year. I think it gained more in value than some more conventional commodities! It's clearly showing its age now and we could do with a retooling of this locomotive. Cheers as always.

    I may be wrong but seem to recall Bachmann did a Collett Goods in early 00’s and marketed under their “Blue Riband” name…..in fact I believe this was the first loco under the “Blue Riband” banner. The tender is a “Robinson” tender which I think came off ex Great Central 2-8-0 freight locos that the GWR imported ti their system for a while.

    Hi Sam, I have a Bachmann 2251 Collett Goods in GWR green unlined with what I presume a Collett tender, 32-304A (2016) which I DCC sound fitted, I put the decoder in the tender and the speaker in the loco under the funnel and bored out the funnel to allow some sound to be emitted, Was a little tricky putting 6 wires between loco and tender and permanently coupled loco to Tender and hope to fit pick-ups in the future, although it runs perfectly well as is.

    End of the year showcase of Sam's shed - some rests from past, some blasts from the past (like the recent, still gorgeous review of SECR C.
    Always nice to have some comparison on how far had the hobby gone in X years since these were new.
    To be fair there are cases when 4 decade spanning vehicle productions were a thing, tho the updates were probably quite substantial for likes of Mini, Tatra 77 (that one was sold under whole different brand).
    ahh yes hornby found moldly molds and decided to bring back a throwback... cost saving measure and all

    That Parting line across the top of the Body/Boiler is just unforgivable.
    As a Modeller at Heart, I would be working hard to remove that in anything I produce.
    And Before painting that would NOT be that hard to Remove.
    It shows a Total disregard for the Finished article and Customer..! IMHO..!

    It's a nice idea Sam to compare older models as a lot of us have to rely on the s/h market to add depth to our layouts - I would say however that you should make special mention of the potential issues with Mainline and early Bachmann split chassis models such as difficult motor strip down and wheel insulating bushes cracking (resulting in mis-aligned wheel sets). Also converting these motors to DCC whilst not impossible is a difficult task.

    One would hope that one manufacturer is retooling this quite common GWR loco. Accurascale, Bachmann, Dapol and Hornby have an appropriate Collett 3500g tender to pair it with plus Dapol and Accurascale would benefit by tooling a 4000g tender too as these ran with the Manors as well

    Great video! I will say I have both a Bachmann and Replica Railways version of this model, and I love them. They really are quite lovely locos to look at, and I do hope we see a new tooled model, because they regularly served in rural areas of Wales and the South West, and as I say look brilliant.
    Personally I would say I prefer the Bachmann model due to the mechanism, but overall a new tooled model would be much more desirable.

    I have a Bachmann Collett Goods and I really enjoy it. I got it for a much more reasonable price than what the current models with superfluous details go for, and its performance has been consistently faultless, even without tender pick ups. The loco-tender coupling can be annoying at times, but given it came out of the box intact, it looks good, and runs well with whatever, it puts quite a few of my newer models to shame, especially considering controversies like the "Hornby faulty motor saga", as- regardless of their flaws- in the past models were expected to work without question, whereas now it's a game of roulette to see if you got a good one.

    I managed to get the original Mainline version in BR black off eBay recently for around $40. My BR lined black version has etched 2251 number plates, lamps added by the previous owner, brake pipes fitted, hooks without chains, clay packed into the tender which I dug out, modified close-coupling drawbar, and peeling front number board. I was looking for a GWR or LMS loco about that size to be my first British OO loco.
    Mine also has a less jarring seam line and a better fit around the chimney and safety valve bonnet

  • @neilbucknell9564
    @neilbucknell9564 Год назад

    Hi Sam - in defence of the Bachmann model - it was I think a full re-tool for 1998, as one of the first “Blue Ribbon” versions, so you are judging a new in 1998, not 35/40 year-old one. It did come in BR lined green (which I have and looks gorgeous!) in two versions. As to moulded cabside numbers, almost no-one does this - understandably when you think of the extra tooling cost. The main drawback is the dreadful moulding line along the top of the body. The cab though is much more prototypical than its Mainline predecessor. It would be nice if re-tooled again, or (as others have suggested) it was offered as a budget starter model - no chance of this in current market conditions, I guess.

    Hi Sam. Good idea to review Bachmann back to the future releases! I am not sure that these re-issues are re-use of old toolings or complete new toolings. It seems funny that the older model should have less of a moulding line along the boiler than the new one, unless it is a different tooling. I have found that with Wrenn and the earlier Hornby Dublo issues of what is superficially the same loco turns out not to be the same tooling. It is often said newer releases re-use the old tooling, but it maybe that the manufacturer cannot do this with some models? A use of old toolings by Bachmann I have noticed is in the USA Thomas range where old Replica Railways items have been re-issued for an extoriionate price! They claim it is HO scale, but it ain't. That's another video for you to make. Thanks for uploading.

  • @philkeller4170
    @philkeller4170 Год назад

    The tender you have is actually a Great Central design! I will explain…
    After WW1, the GWR bought around 100 examples of a 2-8-0 war department design which was a carbon copy of the GCRs 8K class, heavy freight loco design by JG Robinson.
    However the GWR didn’t plan on keeping tall of them for the long term and a significant number in the worst condition were scrapped early during GWR ownership. However while the locos may have been poor the GWR decided the tenders were in a better condition so went and attached some of the better examples to the newly built ‘Collett Goods’ 0-6-0 locos.
    Now when Bachmann launched their newly tooled loco and body of the Collett Goods back in 1996, it reused the standard Collet tender they inherited from the mainline range - but in 2010 Bachmann released a brand new GCR 04 class model and immediately revised the potential to offer the Collett Goods with the 04s tender thus replicating what the real GWR did in the 1930s…
    Hence the somewhat odd coupling system which is effectively bodging together two different models designed over 10 years apart. The ex ROD tender being design to hold not only a decoder ad speaker but also being intended to be coupled to a 2-8-0 means that even a lack of pickups isn’t quite as bad as it seems. The Collett goods meanwhile had no alterations made to it and moreover needed to retain compatibility with the ex mainline tender it used was sometimes issued with.

    I have the old Mainline model. It was one of my first Mainline locos. Now I own three: The Royal Scot in the crimson, the J72 in LNER green and the Collett Goods in GWR green. Funnily enough, my Collett runs very poorly, despite me giving it the most attention. I kinda like it, but if you find one today (which is most likely more than 50£), we have a problem here. I'd stick with the Mainline, as even though mine is not that great of a runner, it has its charme. The GWR green may not have any lining, but it still has some character. This modern Bachmann version though doesn't cut it for me. Unless you're a DCC user, I can't find a good reason to buy this "new" model. I have seen a listing on the Hattons directory that there was a BR lined green but I haven't seen one myself. Also, please do some more older locos for reviews. It's quite interesting (and sometimes amusing) to see what the last decade or two brought to the table. Great review, Sam.

They were very good for 40 years ago, but the split axle insulation muffs were their Achilles heel, as for so many Mainline models. Oddly, the driving wheels never looked big enough to me - the 'baby Castles' had quite large diameter drivers in photos (|Some, I believe came off scrapped Dean Goods engines) and the model seemed a little on the small size. Reviewing older models is a very welcomed variation Sam. Not B's best back then unfortunately, and evidently very old, worn, body tooling as it seems, poorly executed for 2011 and pretty much very underwhelming for the time..., BUT you also have to consider its very low price of course, although it's hard for us to compare what the norm in OO was at that price point, us being on the continent. However, we are under the impression that £50 (equivalent to 2011's ~€ 57) was at near rock bottom budget level for a steamer, but should we stand corrected, we'd love to here it. From a distance, she's not too bad in our mind, certainly for that 2011 money. She makes an interesting project loco as well (further detailing, improvements). Cheerio.

It is exactly the same as yours, with the churchward tender, but because of the weathering, I can't just file down the awful seam line on the top of the boiler. EDIT The following statements are most likely wrong but I have left it as originally posted for context!
    Alas, again made a slip up in your research a models history. Although it is true Mainline did produce a Collett Goods the body was NOT reused!
    In 1996 Bachmann started releasing what they called their ‘Blue Riband’ range of locos with brand new tooling for bodies as well - not just mechanisms and the Collett goods was just one such loco* (though they did re-use the mainline tender hence the retention of the huge hook on the loco as a coupling device.
    EDIT - the following is still accurate!
    Granted that still makes the body 38 tooling years old by now - and as you noted the chassis got a revamp to fit a DCC decoder around 2012 - but that’s not the totally positive development you might think as it involved removing a huge chunk of the die cast chassis and massively reducing its pulling performance and this is why it weighs so much less than the mainline version. A Collett goods from 2007 say would most likely weigh more or less the same as the mainline version.
    * The SR N class was another mid 1990s ‘Blue Riband’ release.

      I think you must have got it wrong - the body is identical with some slight modifications - that’s pretty clear from the video clips,

    Great review Sam. Last comment "quite surprising it's not much better"... It's not really though it's it! I remember the prototype from my youth at the SVR so I've always been interested in these. I got 32-304a which is gwr with city class tender, looks much better than that ugly ROD tender which is far too big in my opinion. Mine has sprung buffers and cab pipe work is painted, as is copper chimney. So B have done a bit off work on then since making this one. This would be a great prototype for Dapol to pick up, to complement all their other smallish GWR models. They picked the 28xx instead, where the competition from Hornby is much stronger

    I rather like your reviews of older models. Adds variety and also, as I tend to be looking more and more to the second hand market your reviews are quite handy 🙂.
    If Bachmann produced old models in a range that was equivelent to Hornby's Railroad range, at a decent price that might be a good thing.

    I guess you can add another test in the performance category: How well it gets over points without stalling or loss of power at it's minimum speed. I'd also wonder if you could produce and sell "performance kits" for locos that could stand to have mechanical electrical improvements done to them as well as add inconspicuous weights to the powered units, as a side gig💰

    An interesting review with a few inaccuracies and lack of prototype understanding
    I was one of those at the age of hmm maybe at the age of 13 14 ish recived a new mainline collett 3210 i loved it
    Fast forward i have a bachmann set with a Collett in BR Lined green western rambler its called runs nice and looks good
    What sam has there is the Collett goods attached to the GCR /ROD 2 8 0 tender .. a tender that was heavier than the loco ..yes the GWR did do this and i know the last surving collett goods 3205 has an ROD tender stashed away somewhere to do this
    So bachmann to put new life into a new model have done what the GWR .. the problem is... the loco body is years old ( the mould lines give that away ) the chassis has been revamped and the ROD tender was drawn up years later for the bachmann ROD 2 8 0 model
    The GCR built loads of these 2 8 0s and during the was they were used by many other railways the GWR being one of them at the end the GWR bought them for £100.. overhauled them and westernised...scrap the loco you sill have a usefull tender

    Great video Sam, well produced and crisp as always. That being said whilst there are points which we can absolutly agree on, I think we should just bare in mind, as you pointed out, how old this model is. Comparing it to 2023/24 standards is like comparing my 2011 plated car to my parents 2023 plated car. The finess, detail and features are going to be miles off. Production is always going to be a sticking point and the seam line is no exception for a 2023 model, however, for a model in bachmanns catalogue in 2011/12 with an rrp of £73.80, would seem to suggest they weren't making much on them expecially given the re tooling. I think we can forgive them on this considereing if it was brought back into the range, you would be looking at close to £200 which is more unacceptable than a seam line. Just a thought. They do say opinions are like .... everyones got one so take it with a pinch of salt. As always keep up the good work and I look forward to the next videos! 👍🏼👌🏼 (maybe the another look at the voyager where you can compare a 2001 tooling project to a 2023/24 standards 😉)

    As a prototype I actually rather like these neat 0-6-0 goods engines but as usual Sam's review has exposed some flaws in the model. One thing that struck me on the closeup is the lamp brackets on the front buffer beam...I thought they'd been moulded or glued on sideways by looking at pics of the real thing this arragement does seem to be accurate even if the moulding is a bit crude. 😁

    • @lukecarruthers

      the tender, btw is an ex GCR item I think, from an 04 class 2-8-0 or something similar. Think we have the Railway Operating Division, ROD to thank for that. As an aside I think these GCR style tenders also ran with V2 2-6-2s in a few cases as well.

    I don’t actually think this is too bad, as it runs well, and in my opinion doesn’t look too hideous as long as you don’t look super close. If Bachmann were to bring it back for around £60-70, then I think it would be a great budget model. On the flip side, they could also retool i5 and make a great model, so long as they keep the price reasonable.

    Plain black is by my favourite livery for locos, hands down. It lets one appreciate the design and features (and also shows up any horrible seam lines- due to a knackered set of moulds I guess?) so much better than all the colours and lining. If it's weathered too so much the better. If it isn't it will be if I have any say. Lined green is so meh compared to black. I have the same attitude to my cars. Black all the way, and no lining lol. The model actually looks quite nice with the ROD tender, I must get one, I can always take my scalpel to the boiler moulding line... thanks for the reminder :)
    PS do NOT bother with the Mainline version - the Bachmann version is so worth the extra twenty quid - DCC ready, much better chassis and wheels, detail etc....
