Hard to disagree with any of your picks, Cody. You delve into all angles. Great work! I know some pitchers, as opposed to most hitters, would enjoy pitching at Oracle. Their defense needs to get better for sure.
Team has at least 3+ years under contract / team control of: Webb, Harrison, Hicks, Birdsong, Beck, Winn, Black, Roupp, McDonald, Wisenhunt, Ragsdale, Seymour, Bertrand, Choate, Lonsway, SInacola, Cumming, Murphy, Whitman, Crawford, plus 2 more years with Ray (& I don't know of any being interesting, but also just drafted 7 college starters). Is there a very good Major League rotation among those names in '26, and beyond? Seems decent chance. I like 1 not-too-expensive year of Buehler & see what develops among all those guys
I’m all for letting the kids play, but relying on the kids to fill out 3/5 of the rotation can be a recipe for disaster. Not to mention after 2 years potentially looking at 4/5 of the rotation. If they can get Snell back to lock down a spot that would be huge. Running through your list the only ones that I’m truly high on as potential starters are Webb (duh) and then Birdsong, Harrison, Roupp, Whisenhunt and Whitman. Maybe Beck as well. I have mixed feelings on Black. Hicks, Winn, Crawford, Ragsdale and McDonald are better suited for the pen for varying reasons. The rest have a long way to go development wise and time will tell. The one thing bringing in SP does is allow them to trade from their organizational strength to bring in impact bats, since they have struggles bringing them in via FA as well as developing them.
Great job Cody breaking down potential starting pitchers that could sign with Giants. I would definitely take any of the Snell, Sasaki, Burnes and Buehler. Perelta is very interesting. I’m hoping we can sign at least two of the high end pitchers.
Snell makes sense (No QO). Unless there's something we don't know, they should go after him. I like that you bring up his durability. Outside some small injuries, he has held up well. Don't know who is even available via trade, but that could be a good option. Good Stuff Cody
Guys on the trade market that I think are at least potentially available are: Sonny Gray, Peralta, (maybe) Gausman, Luzardo and Alcántara. Not sure the prospect haul necessary for each, though Gray would probably be the cheapest if they were willing to take on the whole deal (2 years/$60M, $25 AAV counting against the CBT)
If it wasn’t for the TJ I’d be all over Bieber on a prove it deal. But he seems to be on the same timeline as Ray was last season and I’d just prefer to look elsewhere. My gut says he returns to CLE on a 1 year deal.
If I got what I wanted in FA my rotation next year would look pretty similar to what they had in the second half. Webb-Snell-Ray-Birdsong-Harrison. Want to give the young pitchers the opportunity to develop and then you have Beck/Roupp in the pen and Whisenhunt and Black in Sac or the SF pen. Roupp would be a sleeper to win a rotation spot if they feel Birdsong needs extra development with his command in Sac. It’s nothing sexy, because it’s kinda running it back, but I feel it’s imperative to develop the young starting pitching.
Cody...I am a little concerned with the recent hirings of Evans/Berry/Win (going back in time for advice) Bryan Murphy wrote a piece on this very subject and I totally agree with what he said. Also Posey recently made a statement regarding the tender/non tender deadline on what he was thinking on Yaz regarding that issue. His first words out of his mouth was he is a FREIND of his along with other reasons why he will most likely keep him. I know Posey is new to this gig but he is making me feel real uncomfortable thus far in his decision processes. Your thoughts.....
I’ll make a video on the overall FO hires, but the general gist I can give is: as long as Berry and Evans are mainly advising relative to their strengths (contract negotiations for both and the international market for Evans) that’s totally fine. Winn I’m skeptical of but I can see some potential positives with him in charge of the farm, especially when it comes to developing hitters. The inexperience is concerning though. Really like the Minasian hire though. Still would like an outside voice to be hired in some kind of front office role.
Posey is going old school and not thinking outside the box. Berry hates analytics and there must be a reason why Evans was not hired by anybody in the baseball world after his tenure with SF. I also don't like that Posey is part owner of the club and also has a voice regarding the budget. His present position s/b completely separate from being in ownership. Looking forward to your video on the most resent hires.
I'd agree with Burnes and Snell but I don't think Sasaki or Buehler will come here. Still need a SS and someone at first (please don't let it be Wade) to share time with Eldridge when they bring him up. Pitching and defense is key to winning anything and hopefully they can put some veteran bats with the young bats and gel.
I’m not sure the Dodgers would have a rotation spot guaranteed for him given guys like Glasnow and May should be back next season. Think he got what he wanted out of LA and will go somewhere he’s guaranteed a rotation spot.
@@ejcord true him too. Just have a hard time seeing a spot in the LA rotation for Buehler if he returns. They’d clear room if they get Sasaki/Snell/Burnes but I don’t think they’d guarantee a spot for Buehler.
I doubt a team like Milwaukee is going to trade Peralta for anything less than a big overpay because his contract is attractive to a team like the Brewers
If they’re going to continue trying to win (which they should) I would think they hang onto him for at least 1 more year. But teams like the Brewers who are unlikely to resign players often move them with 1-2 years left when they can get a solid haul for them, so the opportunity may be there. I don’t think he’s one you’d even have to consider moving Eldridge for so it realistically isn’t costing you an arm and a leg.
He’s an advisor. It’s fine as long as they keep him to where he has value. He has decades of negotiating experience which can be valuable given the inexperience Posey and Minasian have in that regard. Also, don’t sleep on the fact that he did improve their international game before he left. Keep him far away from trade negotiations though 🤣
Giants dont need to sign starting pitching they need to trade Webb and Harrison to get something to rebuild. They should've done the rebuild back in 2018 when they had to Brandons contracts. They need to restructure this team or they will continue to be 3rd or 4th best in NL West. It's tough to say to do a rebuild, but you can't keep delaying when has needed to happen.
While I’m not at all against a rebuild, I just don’t see them actually doing it at this point. Not when they feel they have a strong core both in SF and on the way. Lots of talent in the age 23-26 range between SAC/SF. They desperately need that lineup changing presence that ties it all together, unfortunately that is easier said than done. What I can see them doing is taking a step back this season and playing the young guys and trying to get an internal evaluation on what they currently have. Especially with guys like Schmitt, Matos and Luciano on their last option years.
@@EYDShow I would love to see what the Giants think their core is. Their talent is sub par and any signs of talent is in A ball. They have 3 short stops that struggle to hit .200 and strike out 1/3 of the at bats. But things can change. I just dont see where the Giants have any positive other than pitching after Bryce.
For me, positives in the upper levels for young position players include: Ramos, Bailey, Lee, Matos, McCray, Schmitt, Fitz, Bryce and Velasquez. Luciano is a maybe given he’s 23 and could easily turn it around like Ramos did. All those guys except Fitz are 26 or younger and in AA or above. Obviously the biggest hole there are big time impact bats, but even if just Bryce is everything we hope he is that changes the entire outlook. On the pitching side things are a lot more positive obviously.
@@EYDShow but arent those all on the major league roster? They are no longer considered prospects correct? The highest rated prospect is Tibbs, Jordan, Martin Ahuna and Arteaga and they are all A level players. Isn't that a huge gap of talent? Those players are roughly 3 maybe 4 years away from big league shot if they even get a shot right?
@@bkobara1683 I was responding to the “who do I think their core is” question with the guys in the upper levels that can potentially be that. Their toolsy, top end talent prospects are definitely in the lower levels currently. I do think they can build around the core that’s up and be a solid team with a few moves (namely at SS and SP) and allowing some of those youngsters the opportunity to develop.
So... No one remembers or cares that his 1st half for the Giants was BAD. (Snell) No one remembers the 10+ ERA for what 2 months and the 2 stints on the IL... No one remembers that he pitched about 100 innings for the Giants total, HALF OF WHICH WAS A FUCKING DISASTER, which the Giants paid 30 MILLION DOLLARS for. Now, IF Robby Ray bounces back and has a great year, and Webb is Webb, AND at least 2 of the young pitchers Birdsong or Harrison or Roup or whoever, IF AT LEAST 2 OF THEM pan out, and Matt Chapman gives you what he gave you this year offensively speaking (unlikely, his numbers were better than his career avg... it's more likely he will regress offensively, HE IS NOT A MIDDLE OF THE ORDER BAT) And Lee hits more like he did in Korea, and Ramos is able to prove last year was a breakout and not a fluke, and Patrick Bailey is able to not have another CATESTROPHIC FALLOFF in the send half (for the 3rd year in a row...) Do you see the problem... This year is a prove it year... Prove it to me that the players we have right now are good enough to be the core of a team that can compete with LA, cuz if not WTF is the point of delaying a rebuild to try... The worst thing that could happen is that the Giants sign a bunch of people like Corbin Burns and Willie Adames and whoever else, and the kids don't work out... and we end up with Corbin Burns and Willie Adames and... nothing else, having spent a bunch of money AGAIN to be terrible... AGAIN. 2025 is a prove it year... prove to me that we have enough talent on this team to not fire-sale it all and start over. This is exactly what Zaidi should have done last year, so we would come into this year knowing what we have... but he didn't, so we still don't know and now we need to spend 2025 finding out what Farhan Zaidi should have spent 2024 finding out, whether this team is worth fixing or not.
Barry Zito had declining stuff and got a 7 year deal, Snell’s stuff hasn’t declined an ounce and likely doesn’t get more than 4-5 years. I also did point out the bad first half and the overall lack of innings in his career. First half of last year can reasonably be attributed to the lack of a ST. As for Burnes I did also say I personally would lean towards Snell and others, he’s just the only QO pitcher I’d be ok with. Also, they won’t sign 2 QO players unless one is Soto, so no need to address them landing both Adames and Burnes. That said, I agree with a lot of what you said, and have repeatedly said this team should let some of the young position players start and figure out what they have internally. I would like the young guys to get 2 of the spots to continue their development. But this team can address SS and one of the rotation spots and it doesn’t hurt them much going forward. Still very little long term money committed, and even if a deal goes south they have tons of room.
Relying on unproven young pitchers that mostly haven’t even cleared 130 innings in a season to fill out 3/5 of a rotation is a recipe for disaster. Ever heard the saying “you need 6-7 starters to get through a season”? That’s why entertaining a guy that is a 4-5 starter still makes sense. That said every guy I listed outside of Ogasawara can be a 2-3 starter. Buehler just has more risk to implode, though it would be a 1 year deal.
@ cutting payroll doesn’t equal not spending. Anyone with common sense could tell you they were going to get under the CBT. But considering they’re $67M under with easy ability to clear $20M+ more they have lots of room to spend.
