@@smags1082 You need to hear Cocteau Twins most acclaimed album Treasure. I think it's their best. You will feel like you are in a fairy tale that takes place in a crystal cave in a huge forest. I mean it's pure magic
When I reacted to this album I was on an acid trip and I broke down in tears because I realized how beautiful music can be. I never cry to music as well. This is fr the album I am going to carry with me for the rest of my life so its only right that my goat has now reacted to it too.
They didn't even set foot in a studio for this album, I'm convinced they just hooked up an interface to their heads and recorded their dreams. Peak dreampop, peak beautiful music in general. So glad you gave it a listen!!! "They can't understand me, I'm talking hieroglyphics" - Elizabeth Frazer, probably
Definitely recommend Treasure as a second Cocteau Twins album to listen to; so good that Robert Smith of The Cure listened to it getting ready for his wedding day.
Saw this performed live the year it came out, in a church. Best mass i ever attended. You should check out This Mortal Coil, a collective that Elisabeth Fraser collaborated with in the 90's. Three great albums, very atmospheric.
hell yea im adding a slightly relevant rec to the list... recs: Swirlies - Blonder Tongue Audio Baton (GORGEOUS unique sounding early 90s shoegaze, sounds like mbv, pavement, guided by voices with twee pop mixed in, so awesome, better than Loveless imo) Violent Femmes - Violent Femmes (Unique folk-punk, early 80s college/alt rock, very catchy) Teenage Fanclub - Bandwagonesque (Really catchy power pop, slightly shoegazey, same label as The Jesus and Mary Chain, My Bloody Valentine) Quasi - Featuring "Birds" (Awesome Built to Spill-esque/Pacific Northwest indie rock, same label as Modest Mouse, Built to Spill, Duster etc) The Breeders - Pod (Unique early 90s alt rock, Steve Albini prod, was in Kurt Cobain's top 3 albums of all time) Slint - Tweez (Sick late 80s post-hardcore/math rock, also Steve Albini prod) Pinback - Pinback (Very chill and creative late 90s indie rock) Modest Mouse - This Is a Long Drive for Someone with Nothing to Think About (Amazing album, basically as good as The Lonesome Crowded West) Crystal Castles - Crystal Castles (Insanely badass aura filled production and vocals, extremely unique) The Prodigy - The Fat Of The Land (badass big-beat dance music) Guided By Voices - Bee Thousand (lovely 90's lo-fi) Hella - Hold Your Horse Is (Math Rock with the drummer from Death Grips, before he was in Death Grips) Pavement - Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain (Absolutely perfect 90's indie rock album)
Elizabeth Fraser is a fascinating musician with quite the pedigree. Not to mention her vocal range. ALSO, Robin Guthrie is no slouch when it comes to fingerprint on dreampop as a genre.
The harmonies on the closing section of I Wear Your Ring is one of the best moments in modern music and I will fight you if you say it's not. FIGHT YOU!!!!!
I've always considered vocals as an instrument. The way it works with and its ability to enhance the music has always been something I listen for in music. The way everything comes together determines how much I enjoy and connect to the music as a whole. Liz's singing is the perfect example of voice as instrument.
"Elizabeth Fraser: She ain't sayin shit" = my new mental tagline for anything Cocteau Twins related 🧠✨ Fr though, everything you said about the way she constructs her lyrics pretty much nails it. I def think its a choice in part to allow the music, her voice, tones, inflections, and the soundscape in general to speak its own language. But I think it's also to amplify the ethereal, mystical quality of it all. To me, their music/aesthetic really gives fairy tale/folk magic vibes, and I always imagine Liz's made-up word lyrics as the actual language of whatever weird forest tribe she comes from
Cocteau Twins has been my mom's favorite band since always, so I grew up listening to them a lot. :) It's so nice to see such a genuine reaction to an album that is so special to me! You should do Djrum - Portrait with Firewood, this album is SO good and unique!
Hey Smags, big fan from India. I have been watching your videos from a long time now. You have reacted to English, Spanish, Brazilian, Japanese and music in so many other languages. So I felt recommending a Hindi album which comes from a beautiful movie called Udaan. In India there is no culture of releasing standalone albums. The album is also called Udaan by Amit Trivedi, it would be amazing if you could give it a try and respect the diversity in music like you always do.
There are days when I think this is my favorite record ever made. I don't think that today, but it's up there for sure! If you love dream pop, you should get around to "Floating Into the Night" by Julee Cruise, which I think basically created the whole genre. Julee Cruise died recently, but all of her work with David Lynch and Angelo Badalmenti is unbelievably beautiful. Cheers!
It's nice to see someone put there body into it. Im a 55 year ld puertorican, and CT is my fave band since i was a teen. I know it's a very heady sound, but i dont see why people react to this album so passively. Dance on... The whle lirics thing is so important. The way that they allow us to create our very own relationship to this songs "meanings"
you should listen to the verve’s “a storm in heaven” ! my personal favorite from them. also stereolab’s earlier records do a bit more of the noise rock🤝shoegaze thing that was prevalent with the english space rock revivalists of the early-mid 90s (spacemen 3, spiritualized, the verve, flying saucer attack [a scene that i honestly think is an unsung hero as far as musical influences for “ok computer”]). “transient random noise bursts with announcements” would be my pick for that era of their career. also, since you’ve heard gustavo cerati’s “bocanada”, check out his band soda stereo! notably their shoegaze record “dynamo.” fucking masterpiece, and a landmark recording in latin american rock music!
the way this band effortlessly made gibberish sound meaningful and emotional, is such a monumental achievement. sigur ros is the only other band that comes close, IMO
Day 1 of asking for The Texas Jerusalem Crossroads (2001) by Lift to Experience. Lovely indie rock banger from the early 2000's and doesn't get the love or recognition it deserves. Such a fun and fantastic listen. You should check it out.
exceptional. I know the founder of Cocteau Twins! Will Heggie. I also know Simon, he actually phoned me on mobile 📱 phone last year! I missed the bloody 📞!! Legendary band. ~ C 09 - 2024
LOVE YOUR VIDEOS MY GUY a few recommendations: Ghosts of the Great Highway - Sun Kil Moon SMILE :D - Porter Robinson (pop-punk, pop, electronic) Process - Sampha (experimental r&b, great production) Koi No Yokan - Deftones (very heavy, sexier and heavier radiohead imo) Hypochondriac - Brakence (very experimental emo rap, glitch pop) Reading Writing And Arithmetic - The Sundays (the smiths ish, with beautiful female vocals)
There absolutely lyrics to these songs - you just have to listen. She stretches and phrases words in a way that expresses emotion through the sound, partly to obscure the meaning as it's personal to her. The themes of many of the songs are her new motherhood, her rocky relationship with Robin, the guitarist, and the death of other band member's father Simon.
Ion feel bad about these ones tho: Kyuss - …And the Circus Leaves Town The Arcs - Yours, Dreamily, No Doubt - Tragic Kingdom Todd Rundgren - Something Anything? And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of The Dead - Source Tags and Codes

1984's _Treasure_ is the definitive Cocteaus album - essential. _Heaven Or Las Vegas_ is the most well known/popular. Every Cocteaus album is good, tho. Rarely a bad track.
So weird, I literally decided to randomly listen to this album today to see if I wanted it on vinyl, and then I went on RUclips and this was the first thing to pop up.

Robert Smith listened to Treasure as he was getting ready for his wedding.
