Jonathan, you are one of if not The best at explaining and showing the proper mechanics of the golf swing and showing what most people do wrong. Then giving a good drill to help correct it. I’m really glad you take the time to do these instructional videos. I just want you to know how much it is appreciated.
Love your videos jonathan. I've had multiple golf coaches and never had one explain everything as intuitive as you. My biggest issue currently is firing the hips too quick, but your video about proper lateral hip shift helped greatly. I'm now working on proper extension and low point control.
I have been an improving golfer for more tha 40 years. Since finding you recently I have fixed my lack of power and flipping motion that just feels right intuitively but was killing distance and any chance to be consistent through the bag. Your instruction actually helped me finally find an impact position with lag accuracy and POWER. Thank you very much sir. Your drills and instruction and are excellent. Spot on. Wish you great success. My one issue is if I recommend you to my friends, they will be harder to beat. I recently won 17 out of 18 skins in my regular group and missed a 5 footer that would have pushed the one that got away.
Problem has always been not clearing my lead hip quickly/at all - early extension, open club face and and block straight left (I'm left handed). Have always endeavoured to stay centred rather than "bump" right. I'll try the bump then rotate. Trail elbow - gr8, will start indoors as we are in lock down - again!
This is an Excellent video explanation of the role and function of the Trail Elbow and a Great Drill to train the correct move. When I took this idea to the course I just focused on 'keeping my trail elbow in front of my trail hip'. To start with it felt a bit awkward but as the round progressed it began to feel easier. However, the quality of my ball striking was taken to just another level, and one I hadn't experienced before. Drives going 280+, irons going easily two clubs further, making par 5's in two, it felt incredible.
Sensei, greetings from Japan! Thank you so much for this video! You just single-handedly cured my slice, bruising of my finger and loss of power! I couldn't for the life of me figure out why I was slicing and losing power so much and I realized my trail elbow was swinging like how you swing a baseball bat. Now, ever since doing the trailing elbow, my irons sounds so good and they fly 20-30 yards more than before! I'm currently working on releasing the golf club now, will look into your video on that! Again, thank you!
Thank you, Jonathan. I’ll put that drill into my exercise regimen as my main issue (especially with driver and FW) is that the shaft get to steep in the downswing. Rob knows this better than anyone. I try to tuck my trail elbow to my waist and keep it there throughout the swing. Works quite ok on short and mid irons, but not always at the top of the bag. Merry Christmas. Stay safe and Covid free. Keep the videos coming.
Very clear amazing instruction here! Thanks you! For me this is my trigger and feel before and during the swing. I have tried so many but for me, this is my goto.
The biggest frustration with my swing: the driver swing. Started golf half a year ago and been picking it up fast but the Driver has been a constant experiment for me. My natural swing motion is to hit a huge slice on it - I've tried to fix this by exaggerating the draw motion (hitting inside to out, shallowing, closed face), but it feels like I'm over doing it and now fighting a huge top spin hook and missing to the left. Also, I feel like I can't swing as freely doing this and I'm losing quite a bit of distance. Thanks for doing this Johnathan and GL to everyone. Happy holidays :)
I have seen this drill for the trail elbow before. Problem is one cannot do this tweak holding a club in that manner AND swing another club at the same time, lol. Same with drills to help stop the shoulder from coming out and around in the downswing instead of down. Guess why there are so many high handicappers out there in the wild, lol. Thanks for the video, it is helpful like others are and all we can do is to continue to work on them.
Jonathan. Many, many thanks for this video. I have been frustrated due to knowing my chief problems with lack of power stem from my elbow and then follow through. Your drill with the club behind the shoulder is absolute GOLD! I did it five or six times and then realized that THIS was my missing "feel". My brain thought I was doing this but clearly I was not. I stroked a dozen shots after the drill and the power and follow through felt amazing. Thank you so much.
I have just started golf for like 3 months. My biggest frustration for my golf right now is the inconsistancy, mostly with hitting slices. Sometimes i hit mean shots, but majority of time i hit bad slices. So hopefully I got chosen and got my swing analysed and fixed. Thank you!
Really enjoy all your videos, especially those focused on slices or fades right. Retired a few years ago and took up golfing late (68). This my second season playing with scores averaging on my best days in the mid 80s and on a bad day upper 90s. My challenges results from frequently push shots right or have long clubs start straight and fade right. I will keep working on squaring the face - you keep delivering your non gimmick approach and guidance. Keep up the good work. Steve Dunkirk
Your intentions are good young man, but you are trying to fix the oldest swing fault in golf... very very tough for the average golfer do attain. much much easier way to solve the problem of coming over the top, you are trying to cure the faults you are seeing the body make instead of understanding why the body is getting in these positions, this is the key to being a golf pro...........i would be only to glad to share my fix if anyone is at all interested... its so so easy guys...........
Very insightful video and applicable to me. I vacillate significantly in downswing coming from inside then next swing a casting motion and inconsistent “bottom” of my swing resulting in tops, blades, chunks etc…. Will try your elbow downswing moves this week. 🤞
Excellent video ! I think I am that steep guy who hits behind the ball and need to learn how to move my low point ahead of ball. Thanks I will try what you discussed today! 👍
Thanks, Jonathan Great drills, and swing patterns..... the issue is the repeatability and consistency,. How do I get over it and start being consistent?
I make a habit of presetting some external rotation by turning the right elbow in and pointing it more down, while gripping the club. After that all I have to do, is keep a constant distance between the elbows until after impact. I don't have enough shoulder mobility to get the kind of external rotation that more flexible players can get, during the swing but presetting the right elbow really helps.
Wow! I really have a harder time than expected doing the external exercise. Any other specific exercises that I might consider to develop this issue? Thanks
My biggest frustration is a top of backswing position that is laid off at the top, even though the club going back is only a little under the plane. I am building a better backswing path and using the Swingyde tool to help set a more vertical shaft position.
Hi Jonathan, Great golf swing analysis by the way ... My biggest frustration is moving into the ball on my downswing. This causes numerous faults and leads to inconsistent ball strikes and a grumpy golfer (Ha Ha). Anyway I can't seem to shake it !!! Cheers and Merry Xmas and Happy New Year.
Thank you Jonathan. My biggest frustration is that my swing requires non stop repetition. That is, if I miss a few days or a week of swinging, it’s like starting all over to a degree. How do I not lose my momentum? Also, when you use external rotation of trail arm, its hard to understand how you hit the ball from that position. Can you explain how you get back down to the ball from a club that feels compromised from the external rotation? Thanks!
So you flatten the swing by opening up the trail arm, which opens the club face, then you close the club face as you coming to impact by rotating your elbows? A video on this sequence and transition through to release may help..your videos are very practical and effective..
I have a question about body position at contact & finish for different clubs. With irons I have heard the expression cover the ball with the chest at contact and finish weight on the front foot. Driver we stay a bit more behind the ball at contact...I am unsure how our finish position should be...is it the same with weight over front foot? A lot of people talk about a hanging back feeling because they are told to hit up on the driver but then they don't get their weight transferred as much. Is the hanging back feeling the wrong technique to hit up on the ball? Rory always said his dad drilled finish position since he was little and he always has that posing look at the end of his shots. How does he hit up on the ball& through the ball with driver and finish in such a nice transfer of weight and balance on the front foot. Maybe this can be a video topic...thanks for all the great content!!!
Hi JONATHAN. I have a question for you . THank you very much for your lessons they are very helphul. i heard some said to hold the angle of r wrist until contact and some said you have to pronate yur wrist so you can have speed. What would you recommend. Thanks
I am trying to get back into golf but I struggle hitting down on the ball and even when I make good contact it can slice right or just be a push right. I need your swing analysis!
Oh man, my biggest frustration? My driver swing. I'm struggling to shallowing out the club without hurting what feels like my rotator cuff. But that being said, I just feel like I'm leaving a lot of speed on the table.
Hello, yoy make an excellent notice when the right elbow goes out with internal move. I would like to ask, the right wrist bends more coming down from P4 to P5, before the external movement happens ( the right elbow squeezes to the left)?
Wouldn’t know where to start with my frustration with my golf game, but I would say consistency in my ball striking would be #1. Your videos are fantastic, but it’s difficult to know if I’m applying them correctly.
You need to practice using tools that give you feedback instead of relying on your feel. If you have never seen your swing on video before I would highly recommend it!
Biggest frustration is getting out of the car, 😂😜😂. I’m a solid iron player that struggles off the tee with driver. I know there’s no rule binding me to the mighty driver but, I know it can be a huge weapon for me if I can keep it off rooftops, pools, etc...... Thanks for the great content!!
Increadible drill! Thnks for that... A side queation: Flying wedge is good for compressing the ball but how to avoid from late impact ( for me, slicing) as you show in this video, maybe another video soon to come out?
That external drill with the club is pure gold. My biggest frustration is not squaring the face at impact, especially with longer irons and driver. I almost always leave it open, causing a push slice.
Hey boss. I walk with friends when doing a round. I like the exercise and our course has many contours and when I get to play some short game around the green my feel is just out the window esp with short chips,...any tips???
Jonathan, I just love all your videos. I believe that you are one of the best I golf instructor in utube. Keep up the good work. Good luck to you in the New Year!
my biggest frustration in my swing is the way my wrists/hands work with my swing. I never feel like they are in the correct positions and never feel like they are consistent from swing to swing. thanks for the opportunity!!
Hi John, Thanks so much for the comment and I appreciate you watching my videos. I want to thank you by giving you a free online Swing analysis! My email is jkimmossgolf@gmail.com. Please send me an email for further explanation of the process. Hope you had a great Christmas and wish you a happy new year!
Yes it definitely helps! Great drill for feeling the exact movement of that elbow. I know that is a source for inconsistency in my shots. I promise to incorporate this little drill into a pre-shot routine.
Great video .... and a great drill for the right elbow. For me, it's consistency ..... those two or three bad (or very, very, bad) holes that ruin a round.
Really love your videos. Very easy to understand and the videos have really helped me with hitting my irons more solid. I look forward to watching all of your lessons. Keep up the great work. Your friend Glenn Patrick From Canada
There are times where I strike the ball flush & it goes straight out to the left & even a long way. This has puzzled me for a long time. Is this happening because I have my right elbow too far in front of my body as per your video? BTW, you have some of the most unique drills I have ever seen!

I really love the drills you provide after each segment because many of the drills can be done anywhere. Some points you made forced me to revisit my S&T book and I found critical information I missed, plus it wasn’t capture during instruction.
My biggest frustration is figuring out the proper takeaway and wrist hinge. Is the club suppose to travel low or more of a back up and in? I have watched many videos and quite can't get the concept down. thanks
my biggest frustration- early extension. I'm a solid mid 80's player but could be much better if I could eliminate the dreaded early extension. Thanks for all your videos JKM!!
Love how you teach JKM. Straight to the point without the jibberjabber lol like some videos. Your lessons are explained in a way everyone can understand. Keep it up. Biggest frustration is getting steep with my driver caused by fatigue late in the round, example being teeing off on 16th being 3 over gross and skying two consecutive tee shots way left resulting in lost balls and a wrecked card !
Perfect timing. I have been struggling with out to in, high launch angle and hip turn. I hoping this will help. Working at facility with a Trackman so would love to send video from it. Thanks again and keep the great content coming.
Informative explanation. My biggest problem has been, as a self taught golfer, taking the club away with my dominant right hand. This causes numerous problems: bent trail elbow, vertical shaft, cupped left wrist, loose left hand, etc. Very frustrating. Please help.
All my years trying to figure out my swing I've never heard this explained so well. Great tip!!
Because he is the best around!!
Just a wonderful example of a great coach - thank you for putting in the time to create such great lessons!

Hi Jonathan your best golf teacher ever. I have a problem of my downswing I’ll always behind in the ball I dont know why? Danny de vera
Best elbow explanation I’ve heard, great.

I am impressed how easy you show my main issue… Thank you and cheers from Germany
Thanks Jonathan, this is exactly why my Golftec teacher here in Texas is having me work on. Great video.
I really appreciate the direct and succinct lessons that you teach. Packed with information. Thanks

Great, exactly what I was missing from my downswing. Thank you!! How do I register for the free instructions?
Another great drill! Can you do a video on how / when the glutes are to be activated. I’m struggling to finish with full extension
I started in June 2020 for the first time, no lesson, to breaking 80 regularly. It’s a mental game.
You explain well Jonathan. keep er up.

that was a great tip I'll work that exercise, thanx

Another amazing video! Thank you, Jonathan!!
I’ve had had mixed results with shallowing the shaft. I believe it has a lot to do with my upper body dominant swing.
I struggle with hitting irons solidly, often hitting them fat. Would live your advice
You just rock it Jonathan! Thank you✌🏻
Should the shoulders steepen coming into impact so that the right shoulder works under and if so how much?
Too late for this competition?! Hey, thanks very much for your videos !
my biggest frustration in my swing is the way my wrists/hands work with my swing. I never feel like they are in the correct positions and never feel like they are consistent from swing to swing. thanks for the opportunity!!
Hi John,
Thanks so much for the comment and I appreciate you watching my videos. I want to thank you by giving you a free online Swing analysis! My email is jkimmossgolf@gmail.com. Please send me an email for further explanation of the process.
Hope you had a great Christmas and wish you a happy new year!
thank you short and to the point
Yes it definitely helps! Great drill for feeling the exact movement of that elbow. I know that is a source for inconsistency in my shots. I promise to incorporate this little drill into a pre-shot routine.
Great video .... and a great drill for the right elbow. For me, it's consistency ..... those two or three bad (or very, very, bad) holes that ruin a round.
Holy hek why do people not teach this? This is super fundamental to preventing a slice!!!! Wha!
Thanks for your this explanation very informative
Great video! You are helping my golf game big time. But I help with my long irons. 2 3 4. Any tips or drills.
Excellent explanation and drill - thank you
Biggest frustration: lead arm bent during and after contact. Followed by dumping of the wrist angles.
Amazing course, once again. Tks !
Really love your videos. Very easy to understand and the videos have really helped me with hitting my irons more solid. I look forward to watching all of your lessons.
Keep up the great work.

Jonathan great video. Having problems with my driver.
Hey golftec Fam! I work at upper Kirby training in Houston Texas! Keep up the good work!
There are times where I strike the ball flush & it goes straight out to the left & even a long way. This has puzzled me for a long time. Is this happening because I have my right elbow too far in front of my body as per your video? BTW, you have some of the most unique drills I have ever seen!
Hi. It is a good serie you have shown. As to the trail albue, I always use the movement as I skip the rock. It is the same movement the pitcher use. Merry X-mas to everybody,
Great tip . That will definitely get rid of over the top swing
I have problem flipping at impact as well as getting the elbow straight during my top swing
I really love the drills you provide after each segment because many of the drills can be done anywhere. Some points you made forced me to revisit my S&T book and I found critical information I missed, plus it wasn’t capture during instruction.
Jonathan, does this tuck exercise and lesson apply to the driver as well?
I’m hitting a lot of my shots thin. Do you have any videos posted to help me out of this funk?
My biggest frustration is figuring out the proper takeaway and wrist hinge. Is the club suppose to travel low or more of a back up and in? I have watched many videos and quite can't get the concept down. thanks
my biggest frustration- early extension. I'm a solid mid 80's player but could be much better if I could eliminate the dreaded early extension. Thanks for all your videos JKM!!
Love how you teach JKM. Straight to the point without the jibberjabber lol like some videos. Your lessons are explained in a way everyone can understand. Keep it up. My one question would be I have a smooth swing and make great contact with all my clubs when using my net at home. At the course or even driving range I get jerky. Any advice to transfer smoothness to course would be appreciated. I hit it decent at course but feel tense. Thanks for the videos JKM!
Happy new year and an enjoyable start with a good video thats made big improvements to my swing
Great lesson (as usual).
My miss is a straight push. Generally solid contact, but doesn't draw like I want.
what a beautiful drill. thank you sir!
Excelent videos ,very accurate info. Thank you.
I need to make a more solid contact . I feel that I make thin contact most of the time.
Hi Jonathan
Like your videos and recommend you to my friends. Do you have a drill too stop bending or squatting down during backswing
I have a video about dipping in the backswing. "How to Stop Dipping"
Informative explanation. My biggest problem has been, as a self taught golfer, taking the club away with my dominant right hand. This causes numerous problems: bent trail elbow, vertical shaft, cupped left wrist, loose left hand, etc. Very frustrating. Please help.
