He is not a show man he is true educated man with a lot of knowledge he could chill in ending world for he has all he needs his mind and memory will serve him well
My final point is that these programs are designed to entertain as well as inform. If you want to watch someone running around shouting "this is really dangerous" while eating live frogs, watch Bear Grylls. However if you want to see some aspects of proper bushcraft, watch Ray Mears. As long as you are enjoying yourself... does it really matter?
I've always fly-fished, but I dutifully went to the local shop and bought a spinner lure and a line and, lo and behold, I caught a 2lb trout in the local loch. It takes a while to get the hang of the casting technique, so that it doesn't chop the water too much, but once you have it's actually a very reliable means of getting fish. I still prefer otter-boards though, minimal effort so you can go off and forage while they are set.
that pop can with the fishng line is a good idea. glad you got a bite. If I was in the back country & wanted to catch alot of fish I would definately try to use a net to increase my chances of catching something.
i always carry a small sized woodsmans axe and collapsible saw. Ray is a great bushcraft expert, seen him at leeds theatre once got his autograph. Hes a lot better than any survivalist thats on tv anywhere in the world he is so confident in his skills and completes them with ease espcially the bow and drill, this takes practice and is hard.
guys... Both Ray and Bear are very good at what they do or we wouldn't be having a discussion right now... we've all learned a ton from both of them, some good stuff and some not-so-good... the point is to enjoy it... and by the way, Jesus like all of us
I love this trap! Easy to make and it is really easy to make it oh so sensitive to the touch. Trigger mechanism is fantastic. It's called a Dave's deadfall trap...check it out!
Les stroud is my hero! this is my first fim with ray mears...so far so good. only thing is im trying to figure out how i could adapt them for my area (pacific NW)
I remember that series on channel four, the man in the wild or something, it was amazing. He got seriously depressed and lost loads of weight. he also fished for days and didn't get anything. In the end he had to get helicoptered out. Great series still.
wait can someone explains to me how did the 3 triggers hold up the trap? I mean the pointy one suspends on the edge miraculously. thank you, nice logic you are using there. I like it.
If anyone is curious about the music, I believe it's Lamb, an electronic music duo from Manchester. Maybe not the best Bushcrafting music, but they had a few hits like 1997's "Gorecki".
Bravo Ray. You may have saved a few lives. If folks reading this get stranded in the wild, they might just make it on what they saw here. I NEVER go in the woods without a good knife and a hatchet on a belt so they stay with me even if I slip and fall. My hatchet has a small saw in the handle and the whole thing is metal. No wood to break or split. With those I can make a shelter or a trap, cut firewood. Keep fish line coiled in a friction tape or snuff container. Dig worms for bait.
It's best to carry a line with you when you go out, you can make a lure from a piece of feather and a hook from a thorn or a couple of pieces of gorse back to back. At a push, you can make a basic fishing line from deer sinew but it's very time consuming so I tend to carry a fishing kit instead. if I had to catch fish from scratch, though, I would probably dispense with the line idea and build a fish trap, especially at this time of year when the rivers are low and full of young fry.
@garrl007 Ray Mears shows what good ideas are and the value of good preperation. Bear Grylls shows us that drinking elephant shitwater and eating partly digested food from a camels stomach can get you pretty high ratings. In reality a lot of the things that Bear Grylls does are actually terrible ideas which can often harm you more than they would help you. Plus I appreciate that Ray Mears doesnt pretend to be survivaling. While Grylls does do that, even though he sleeps in hotels.
look at the place he's in. he's living the dream for sure. I can't wait til I'm older and can travel and go hiking for a few days on my own. I'll make sure to practice and learn the bushcraft skills before I go so I don't end up making a tit of myself and freezing/starving.
I live in the Pacific NW also, and the Olympic and Cascade mountains have exactly that sort of alpine lake, not to mention the lowland lakes that we have. And the squirrel trap is usable just about anywhere. BTW go Les Stroud lol
great idea. made me think; what about small pcs of plant material as a bobber in ray's situation (i.e. not having brought one). certainly no shortage of plants around him.
those brook trout are beautiful and perfect eating size!the deadfall trap idea was easier than most that I've seen but I would've used domething heavier! this guy's cool and I know he's just giving examples, but wherever he's @,notice all the clearing's.lol look's like a campground or something..try using live b8 that u find also, will catch more fish! screw those "leeewaaahrs"!also you will have more room in your kit just packing hook's(old washers 4 weight or corks 4 float's)
Ray Mears is one of the most accomplished teachers of bushcraft in modern history. Not only has he attained worldwide knowledge across the last 25 years, but he also teaches the military the art of survival. A lot of what Edward grylls knows is from the teachings of Ray Mears. Ray Mears has also studied Judo for most of his life and by all accounts is pretty damn good at it.
this is a old lost art of man . ray is a real man who could live of the wild , not the concrete jungle we all live in today with subways , KFC or a big mac . real man = real surviver .
You are right of course. The air gun that I had (Benjamin 20 cal silver streak) that only knocked one down even with a head shot was losing the air seal on it. When I bought a new one, I saw they have some pretty high powered designs out there now. I was typing my comment sort of fast.
If you come across a pond like that in Canada it's almost a sure bet to have way larger fish! A collapsible rod and real is in my opinion essential for a camping trip or in a survival situation having one handy stored in a bag is ideal
Bro it's ray mears man, he is simply showing you it gives you a basic understanding on a line and hook works in practice, simple becouse we can offer make these things out of cord and bits of metal or thorn for hook tbf he is just haveing fun there in a real situation ray would not go for fish in the way he would make baskets becouse he has the hands of a God at making things, so he would hunt a deer or beever any of the above, using traps and snears, he is a very capable and had so much knowledge it would hurt ha head 😂😂😂he is British and we don't fuck about
In high lakes and brooks, yes, they often stay small. They will fire up and spawn at 6 inches. It probably has to do with growing season and lack of food.
Between all these people that I have seen on tv doing survival I would probably want to go with this guy. He must eat pretty good out there with the few extra pounds he is carrying around.
Love it ! I'm in a swamp not just any I'm literally in the Atchafalia basin area with in 5 miles of my home I have the gulf of Mexico, a 7 mile lake a river Bayou and swamp. Just with a bb gun I can harvest pidgions and other birds. Then there are turtles literally walking around. Squrrel you can take them and not leave the house. I rarely ever throw away a 2 litre bottle there just too many options for upcycle them. My first is emergency water few drops of bleach and date that bottle safe to drink for 2 years. Second a fish trap , not the monster you just caught but the minnows that can yield great fish. I need to learn the art of trout lines. Already know casting net use but they easily are damaged or lost to a hang. Also therr are wild hog deer rabbit and you get it , a22 lr is all the power you need to harvest every creature of the area. I have thousands of rounds for the weapon. Want to build some hello Kitty shotguns they are built from scrap and work. Build many test them and place them where you want especially places you might find yourself stranded.
I don't know joakim, i think that he'd be comfortable in a survival situation with just a knife. All that knowledge he has, he'd make the best out of any situation. Mears is a legend.
This guy makes knots and fire in ways Bear Grylls have never made! Anyway The Bear rocks, no doubt... Regarding the trap, u could obviously attach some sharpend sticks with a nice result.
its true bear grylls does it for entertainment although he teaches every one a lesson to never under estimate the harshness of being lost in a dence forest or life-less desert and his new series has come out ive watched it and its kinda like ray mears programme its more on the teaching side than the entertainment side but i enjoy both i also like survivor man to its very good to watch! much better than cartoons or reality TV!
true, but bear gryll's way of making fire is different to ray mears, ray uses the old traditional fire making (rubbing two sticks together) and bear grylls always uses the flint and stricker
@sprjcube im sorry ur right its just the fact that its the size of it is the size of a hook, but also thats a brown trout nit a brook trout. look at the fins, no white around them, and ive been trout fishing since I was two so dont disagree, look close
I wish they had shown more detail of the deadfall trap's trigger mechanism. I can guess how the three parts were carved and how they fit together, but it should have been shown in explicit detail. I shouldn't have to guess.
In wilderness areas it is often easier to catch fish since they haven't seen people and their various fishing gear like lures and flies. Fish are curious about new things that look edible.
@lordm4c well if i was going to be stuck out in the wild with nothing to eat r drink i would pick this guy, i mean look at him and grylls....who you think eating better?
@TheRealNathanStanley I just went three days in to the woods in Canada, quite remote, saw no one else for a week. Found a Labatts Blue can. I've heard someone say no matter how remote they've gotten, they always find evidence of humans. Maybe it was Les Stroud?
Wow ! Ray Mears is great. No drama...no comedy... everything he shares is straight to the point. Excellent survivor tips.
He is not a show man he is true educated man with a lot of knowledge he could chill in ending world for he has all he needs his mind and memory will serve him well
I Looked Your Name Up In Wikipedia It says you are the smartest man to walk this earth.
Ray Mears You are Awesome.
These videos were awesome when I was in middle school back in 2012! I would literally spend all day watching these. Thank you for posting them.
I love this guy so much, one of my favourite things to watch on TV.
ray is a genius. he knows what knowledge is important:)
Gotta love ray mears, living legend.
I loved a bit of RM. So calm and easy to watch.
that fishing trick works!
me and my friend once caught a trout using the hobo method! great fun!
Ah, yes, the old 'fishing line, fish hook, and bait' trick.
Ray Mears' shows are the only reason I would pay the BBC a penny these days (that is, if I hadn't chucked my TV out long ago).
I have that book and I take it everywhere. I believe it is was written very well and is very informative for the cause of survival.
I've always fly-fished, but I dutifully went to the local shop and bought a spinner lure and a line and, lo and behold, I caught a 2lb trout in the local loch.

Ray is a survival machine! I bet he even made that video camera with some wood, leaves and his own bare hands.
1:18 and crunch there is a squirrel with a headack.
Lmao that's what I was thinking
i always carry a small sized woodsmans axe and collapsible saw. Ray is a great bushcraft expert, seen him at leeds theatre once got his autograph. Yes. That's it. Brilliant response.
Ray Mears is the man
Ray Mears always has something usefull to teach us..
really? nice!
real fun when stuff u see and try out acctually works!
Nice little tip, thanks ray!
You the man Ray!!!
Got me wanting to go wildcamping now :D
Another Excellent video Ray. How can we get you to come to Maine as a guest instructor?
I love this trap! Easy to make and it is really easy to make it oh so sensitive to the touch. Trigger mechanism is fantastic. It's called a Dave's deadfall trap...check it out!
used to love binging on ray mears and only fools with my grandad on a saturday and sunday!!
Beautiful landscape.
thank you
Looks to me like the Sierra Nevadas. Such beauty!
Les stroud is my hero! this is my first fim with ray mears...so far so good. only thing is im trying to figure out how i could adapt them for my area (pacific NW)
i love how he says lure!!
I remember that series on channel four, the man in the wild or something, it was amazing. He got seriously depressed and lost loads of weight. he also fished for days and didn't get anything. In the end he had to get helicoptered out. Great series still.

LOL funny description. i like it

rays the real deal
awesome dead fall trap
haha! mint!
What are you studying!? So what's easier to repair about the recurve in survival situation?
Such a nice guy =)
I live in the Pacific NW also, and the Olympic and Cascade mountains have exactly that sort of alpine lake, not to mention the lowland lakes that we have. And the squirrel trap is usable just about anywhere.

@alexoprel ...F5 in a Mac only up the volume.
Thank you for playing!
In high lakes and brooks, yes, they often stay small. They will fire up and spawn at 6 inches. It probably has to do with growing season and lack of food.
Ray: "So i've taken the mushroom and put it on the trap."
squirrel: "DA FUK!?!? WHERE THE HELL IS MY MUSHROOM!??!"
Between all these people that I have seen on tv doing survival I would probably want to go with this guy. He must eat pretty good out there with the few extra pounds he is carrying around.
omg i learnt so much from this. ok im gonna go fish alright alright now you better have gotten training for this
I learned this fishing method in Mexico.
plastic bottles work well too.
RAY MEARS FTW!!!
Love it ! I'm in a swamp not just any I'm literally in the Atchafalia basin area with in 5 miles of my home I have the gulf of Mexico, a 7 mile lake a river Bayou and swamp. Wow very good.
LOL hobo fishing. Just great.
Was that mushroom you picked and was talking about being careful...a Boletus Edulis? or other Boletus?
if you bring fishing lines would you bring the fishing rod too?
i like the hobo fishing :D
I don't know joakim, i think that he'd be comfortable in a survival situation with just a knife. All that knowledge he has, he'd make the best out of any situation. Mears is a legend.
That's Really cool:)
i love bear grills and survivorman i watch em all the time :D
GREAT!
wow that looks just like a stocker trout. wonder how many they had to put in the water to get one to bite that red jig
the force is pushing it up into the first stick holding it in place
Nice, dude.
squrils are tuff lill buggers...is that trap strong enough to really kill it?
@ThyzSykez is there alot over there? we really dont have many
Ray Mears has a great respect for nature. I'm sure he went and ate it or used it as bait.
This guy makes knots and fire in ways Bear Grylls have never made! Anyway The Bear rocks, no doubt...
Regarding the trap, u could obviously attach some sharpend sticks with a nice result.
very true also ray mears teaches people the skills via TV where as bear grylls puts them to practise
its true bear grylls does it for entertainment although he teaches every one a lesson to never under estimate the harshness of being lost in a dence forest or life-less desert and his new series has come out ive watched it and its kinda like ray mears programme its more on the teaching side than the entertainment side but i enjoy both i also like survivor man to its very good to watch! much better than cartoons or reality TV!
i like the squirrel trap.
totally agree with you.
rock on man!
true, but bear gryll's way of making fire is different to ray mears, ray uses the old traditional fire making (rubbing two sticks together) and bear grylls always uses the flint and stricker
how much are there tour dates?
isn't there a minimum length for trouts in the uk?
(i mean a fishing act)
i would release this small exemplar
@sprjcube im sorry ur right its just the fact that its the size of it is the size of a hook, but also thats a brown trout nit a brook trout. look at the fins, no white around them, and ive been trout fishing since I was two so dont disagree, look close
I wonder if the top log on the trap was really heavy enough to crush a squirell?
what did he use as a lure?
What bag was he using?
Lost in the wildnerness, didn't think to bring some food, but i did remember to bring and old drinks can, some fishing wire and a lure!
That was actually a great figure 4 trap...Les Stroud (Survivor Man) tried to make one in the forrest one time and it didn't look or work right at all.
cool video, i subscribed. but me thinks there needs to be more weight on the top log.
where is this video taken! in england??
@VCastanium a cylindrical stick would serve the same. and usually people bring soft drinks or canned food on a camp.
dang! i wanted to see the squirrel trap in action! LOL!
Amen to that my man.
I wish they had shown more detail of the deadfall trap's trigger mechanism. I can guess how the three parts were carved and how they fit together, but it should have been shown in explicit detail. I shouldn't have to guess.

@lordm4c well if i was going to be stuck out in the wild with nothing to eat r drink i would pick this guy, i mean look at him and grylls....who you think eating better?
By brook trout he means the biggest minnow they could find at the local bait and tackle shop to put on the end of the hook and stage catching a fish.
hmm anything with hobo and a sport draws me in hehe
@TheRealNathanStanley I just went three days in to the woods in Canada, quite remote, saw no one else for a week. Found a Labatts Blue can. I've heard someone say no matter how remote they've gotten, they always find evidence of humans. Maybe it was Les Stroud?
