- RSD Sergeant V5 Review. This is the latest version of RSD's adventure bike. Set it up as a 27.5, or a 27.5+, or a 29er, or a 29x3.0, or even a 27.5x4.0. Today we take it out on a few trails in Sedona to see what it rides like as a 29x3.0 (29+.) This bike is extremely versatile and is a bit of a swiss army knife. The latest version has a shorter chainstay, longer reach, and a slacker head angle than the v3 that I previously reviewed. Based in Toronto, Canada, RSD bikes has a 5% discount for all hardtail party viewers. Use coupon code "party" at checkout to get 5% off any RSD product. Learn more about the bike here: bit.ly/3zJTsN6

We need to keep 29plus alive!!!
Agreed. That's one reason I made my Maniak signature model able to fit 29+
Yes! 100%! Running KOM i45 and Lightbicycle on 3” width tyres. So good on trails!
What is the current trend, 29 x 2.4-2.8?
@@icantgivecredit871 For 29plus, I only consider 2.8 and 3.0 as “plus”. 2.6 is really just a high volume MTB tire and a lot of MTB bikes max out there. Plus tire options having been dying out. I have been running some 3” Maxxis Minions for 2k miles, but I am about to test some Bontrager XR2’s, and a set of 2.8” Terrene Cake Eaters.
@@ElevationEveryWeekend So, do most current trail bikes have high-volume 29ers?
Great breakdown and distinctiveness between 27.5+ and 29+ Steve!!. Another great job and fun review 👍👍
Great review as always. I have an al Middlechild and while it's a fun bike, I'll never ride it to its potential. I've been thinking about the v5 Sergeant as a replacement for my Middlechild and my 27.5x4 fatbike, as I love that tire size and its off piste capabilities. Looking forward to the next one!
3.0 in front and 2.8 in rear would be perfect. You would have nailed some of those techy spots with a higher engagement hub for sure. I rode my new bike for a week with the stock hub after having i9 hydra on my previous bike. Well now I have hydras again.
I got a REEB Donkadonk to try to do the rigid XC meets Fat meets ATB vibe that the Sargent is going for. So far I’ve run it 26x4.8, 27.5x3.8 (more like 3.5” actual), 29x3.25 front (3” rear) with 50mm hoops, and 29x2.6. You’re totally right about the playfulness vs. versatility, and I think it all comes back to how the tire/wheel size changes the trail figure of these bikes. I’ve been messing with a trail calculator online and the 29x3.25 is the almost the exact same as 26x4.8, and I prefer that feeling for carving corners and proper mountain biking. The 29x2.6 and 27.5x3.8 have a more big kid BMX / ATB vibe that is nice if you’re in the mood for it, or if you want a better handling bike with a front load. Anyway, like you said in the very beginning, bikes are just the best.
RSD Sergeant frame is the Swiss Army “frame” with all the wheel configurations possibilities. Plus a few fork and the dynamic HTA aspects. I could see this frame as a “build a bear” project with those options. I’ve never rode more than 27.5 x 3.0 or 29x 2.8 and this bike pushes those boundaries. I’d be curious about the 27.5x4.0 as a desert “sandy” trail explorer, probably the rigid fork would be better. That 29x3” is probably better suited as a combination of loose crawling to more aggressive terrain that I would plow through and use that fork suspension.
Longer pins make a big difference on the stamp 1’s. Made that change last year and they feel so much better grip wise.
Great review as always Steve! 👍
Maybe going mullet with a 120mm fork would help on where you found the shortcomings. Sounds like a great bike no matter what. Not sure there's another bike with this much versatility. Just need to invest in a few different wheelsets, which is cheaper than having 3 bikes lying around.
I love 29x3, but I've actually downsized to 2.8 Maxxis Rekon + front and rear on my Maniak. Definitely much faster rolling and helped on the climbs. The DHR DHF combo was too much for my trails and XR4's measure in as 3.1's so I got tire buzz out back. I'll save the DHR/F for when I travel to someplace that needs it.
So many people overlook tire tread, and automatically go with downhill tires on all their bikes. Tire tread pattern is one of the most important components to get right on a build.
I run big platform pedals from pedaling innovations which doesn't seem to have the problem with that center platform area you ran into with the big platform pedals you tried out . I like them .
Nice! I was waiting for this. I expected the extra wheelset weight would come into play, it always does, but I didn't expect 15mm extra on the chainstay length. I thought it would have been engineered into it to handle both sets. Not a deal breaker, but the tech climbing liability and spinup rate was surprising.
It handles both, but with a 29x3.0 being 30.5" tall, it won't fit slammed all the way forward. If you need shorter stays with 29x3.0, the Maniak would be a better fit for you.
Definitely add longer pins to the pedals, I did and made them as good as my one-up ones. Cheap upgrade from £4
Epic indepth review! Looks like a solid in quiver bike.
Hopefully you'll review a surly someday!
It'll happen one of these days.
I think this might be the type of bike (maybe not necessarily the exact bike, though maybe it is) for people in my situation where your position in life is one where you don't necessarily know where you're going to be living in a few years time because maybe you're military, you're in university, whatever.
Had the very same issue with the stomps myself. I didn't keep them for long, the axle area stops you shoe sinking on to the pins that need to be longer anyway! HT PA03A are better vfm imo.
I had the crank bros stamp pedals, and didn't like the feel of that axle in my foot either. I think you should try the Deity deftrap large platform pedals, I have them now, and love them, the pins on those really grip super good to your shoe, and a couple of times my foot was actually a little difficult to get off the pedal, lol
Agreed, those Deity pedals are awesome. Run them on all my bikes
Hi Steve great video as always. I think the RSD Middlechild would be better for my style of riding. I don’t know if I missed it but how is the frame compliance compared to the other bikes you have rode?
Very informative. Thanks
PNW flats are money! Also I NEED this bike lol
Great review. I really enjoy your videos. It would be cool
to see a review of the new Kona Honzo - regular model with 130mm fork and 66,5 degree angle. I am wondering if rides similar to the Spz Fuse. I have a feeling it would. Thank you!!
Nice review Steve, as always! Anxiously awaiting the 27.5x4.0 review! Although I was considering a Mayor for winter, I may look at the Sargeant so I could have a fatbike for winter and convert it to a bikepacking rig in summer!
Speaking of bikepacking, I'm getting ready to outfit a couple of @drj0nbagworks Limpets on my MiddleChild so I can put on my Tubus Airy rack and load it up with some Rockgeist Microwave Panniers for a backpacking adventure with my son!
Steve - what's your take on mixed wheels on a hardtail like this? To get the shorter chainstay out back and drop the BB a bit without giving up the extra traction and rollover of the 29+ front tire. I guess it would slacken the HTA and STA, but then you could swap to a shorter travel fork to compensate. Regardless, versatile bikes are cool!
It all depends on where you're riding it. In some places that will be a favorable tradeoff, but on other trails it won't. I did a MX vs 29er vid a while back on the chameleons. That would apply here.
Yo Steve! Appreciate your work. Been wondering if you could get your hands on a Orange Crush, Merida big trail or GT Zaskar in the future?
Orange won't send him a bike. We tried.
Much anticipated vid! What bikes are comparable to this in the 29x3.0 configuration?
How do you like the DVO Fork?
Maybe if you can test as 120 fork instead 140 may balance it out more in 29 plus mode.
I'm curious which geometry aspect you'd do that for? Lower bb? Steeper hta and sta? Lower stack? Longer reach?
Why?
I had the same problem with my stamp 1 large pedals. Longer pins do fix the grip issues but sadly after about a year of riding them the left one launched itself off it's spindle. Which wasn't scary at all.
So what about a 29+/27.5+ mullet edition of this bike?
Seems like 2.8's would fit more in this bike's wheelhouse. Still +. Or even 2.6, used to be +? Might also start to lower that bb noticeably.
Have you tried 29x3.0s yet? It's pretty awesome. Definitely my favorite tire size for a hardtail. 29x2.8 is good too.
The taller bb wasn't actually a problem for me, I dug it after I got used to it.
Great review, thanks Steve. I love 29+. Would trying a plus mullet be weird? 27.5+ rear and 29+ front? I know it’ll slacken the geo.
I rode a plus mullet on my paradox on flying monkey trail a while back. I have a video of it on youtube. In certain situations it'll be great, in other situations it'll be worse. Everything is almost always a compromise when stuff is modified. I actually really love the bike like this. The main thing a mullet would afford me is a shorter chainstay, but I wouldn't want this bike any slacker.
@@hardtailparty thanks Steve, just watched that one, that was some gnarly riding on a gnarly trail!
Bigger tires, more momentum, wants to go straight. Hmm, wonder if bigger and taller people may like 29 plus much more?
I think everybody should give it a try to see if it's for them. I'm not sure 29+ wants to go straight, it just takes more effort to initiate corners properly.
What Hardtail out there do you think would be best suited for Sedona type riding?
I designed the binary Maniak to be my dream Sedona bike. It's amazing.
Canyon stoic soon?
I've been trying to get one for years. Hopefully one day.
Same fork as the 27.5x 2.8? I didn’t think one could use the same fork for 29 X 3.0 and 27.5 X 3.0?
Almost all 27.5x2.8 and above use a 29er fork. Most (but not all) forks that fit 29x3.0 also fit 27.5x3.0
Well, a rep at RSD told me I’d have to buy a 29+ fork to run 29x3.0…😅
@@mountainbiker8904 depends on the fork. Rockshox forks tend to fit 29x3.0 better than most. You'll have to research which forks fit which tires.
Didn’t you use the same stock DVO fork?
which wheelset are you using ?
I mention it in the video.
Mullet?
