FYI: Calgary does use salt sand and gravel for the roads. However, I think when it is -15c or colder, salt is not used as it cannot melt the snow and ice when below that temperature. Rock chips on the windshield and car paint are brutal. It can be mitigated with clear protective paint film being installed at the front the car, and halfway up the hood. Some people have the entire front wrapped in paint protection film. Welcome to Calgary!
Also, the snow removal strategy is based on waiting for Chinooks. Great when it's warmer for extended periods of time. It sucks when the snow piles up and there's a cold snap.
Actually salt is hard on your paint and then your car will rust out faster. You are right about the rock chips, so annoying. Next time I have to get a new windshield I will get that protective film which will protect it. Calgary is a beautiful city and the sunny skies make it even better.😊
Winter 2023, -46°C, but only for a couple of weeks. Otherwise it was a beautiful winter. When a Chinook rolls in the temperature can change 20 degrees in 3 hours.
This winter 2023/2024 is the warmest winter in the last 24-25 years! So it would be not fair comprising. Please be prepared for much colder and long once! ;) Yes rocks are pet peeves for me too...as well as roads and sidewalks in bad conditions after storm.... Sunny yes! :) I love sunshine too!
The dry air: get a good quality air humidifier installed on your furnace. It makes a difference. For Chinook headaches: watch the forcast closely. If you can possibly see a Chinook coming 24 hrs ahead, watch your sugar & chocolate consumption & increase your water & sleep. This helps me avoid a headache.
The snow removal in Calgary is definitely not great but I think the reason why they only mainly do main roads is because usually the chinook is just around the corner and it will melt all the snow anyway, so they can cut costs that way.
As a Calgarian, we use what they call "pickle mix". We are aware of the vehicles from down East and will not purchase them bc of the over-salted roads that rust out the bottoms of the vehicles.
The City of Calgary uses salt on icy roads and also a mix of sand, salt and gravel called pickle when it gets colder. In Banff, they do not use salt because it attracts animals into town and they lick the roads and cars.
I lived in Calgary for four years in the 1980's and really enjoyed it. The one thing though is that with chinooks and then the cold fronts during the winter, the change in air pressure can give migranes. On the money side, when I moved back to Ontario, I found it quite expensive. The people that I got to know in Alberta were great and back when I was younger I was always in the mountains either skiing or hiking. We now live in Texas, but if we were to return to Canada, Calgary would certainly be very attractive.
I’m from Calgary and went to Toronto for schooling. I would say the opposite in terms of friendliness. Me and my husband felt more welcomed and had a lot more friends when we went to Toronto. Like not only from my community but I feel like people there are more open to talking to other people. But welcome to our city. Hope you enjoy the rest of your stay here
Being a weather sensitive person, I've been thinking of moving from Calgary to a less turbulent area for 5 years now. However, there are not many places in this country that offer the same quality of life. I will probably try living in Edmonton just to compare
You need to get a bike trailer for Violet and get on our huge bike trail network! Also, Kananaskis and foothills area like Bragg Creek and Sheep River Park are way cheaper and less developed than Canmore/Banff. You need a permit for these areas as well. Also, the snow is much lighter to shovel cause it's dry. Sometimes I just use a broom. You can drive 1 hour from Calgary in any direction and get a totally different landscape. Hwy 22 north or south is beautiful driving along the foothills. I love Calgary, not missing the humidity in Windsor Ont!!
Calgary is always home to me, even to family in the states. tons of hikes here, close to the border, weather can be crazy-can get all 4 seasons in an hour I've seen it, but every winter and summer is different and we get all 4 seasons. it will get to -40C, but it doesn't last long and when it's that cold it won't snow. lots of flights go out of Calgary vs Toronto which is great! Migraines are very common here due to chinooks, it is dry here, but it's still home
of course salt is used in Calgary, but it is mixed with gravel and sand. They don't use as much salt as Toronto that's for sure but salt is only good to -10 or so. The city saves on snow shovelling budget by relying on chinooks
Winters are still complete crap to be honest and last absolutely forever vs TO. You have been here 6 months, you'll see after 10 years lol And spring, summer and fall are much better in TO. I will agree on the dryness though. It's not that cold vs TO when it's like -5. But is it cold in Calgary, YES, absolutely. Much colder than TO overall. (and again, that's because all the seasons are much cooler here)
I loved the sunny winters in Calgary. Calgary was a fantastic place to live! I tell people to move there all the time. I had to move away for family, but i think Calgary a fantastic place.
Your talking about the roads not being snowblowed as quick as in The east, well if we were given 5 billion dollars like Toronto just got from Freeland and if we didn’t have to send billions of equalization payments to the east, maybe we would have money for a few extra graders and labour to help clean things up after a snowfall.
Careful at nose hill park there is a lot of porcupines near the tree areas and your dog can get a face full of quills, They tend to hang out in the trees but be careful. Calgary literally has a 7 day snow clearing plan in most cases a chinook comes in and melts it. Summer travel places you need to see. Banff is nice but it not even top 5. Drumheller (Museum, Abandon coal mines, Hoodoos etc)Friday night to Sunday is enough. Writing on stone national park (on your way down stop at head smashed in buffalo jump and you can get a nice hotel in Lethbridge). Cypress hills it boarders on the southern edge of Alberta and Saskatchewan and is where the RCMP started. in the fall the wild turkeys will drive you nuts. Edmonton is great in the winter the water park is like a tropical oasis in the middle of winter. Columbia Icefields (they have a buss with monster truck tires and takes you up a glacier). Jasper is much nicer then Banff and they have busses with no roof you can really take in the sights. Head up to Bragg creek and elbow falls has a really nice walking path (better in the summer it ices up pretty bad in the winter). this one costs almost nothing. Stay at the Pomeroy hotel in Nakiska one of the best spas and incredible places for a 1 night staycation. Frank slide is down south on the way into BC and it is a massive landslide that wiped out a town some nice golf courses and skiing at Fernie down there is top notch replacing windshield you do it in the spring. Windshield surgeons or National its $160 I just put a new one on in April.
Thank you for your video, we're thinking to move there too. Can make a video on how to move, the average cost of moving itself,if it's worth it to take our furniture there ... Thank you ❤😊
Thank you so much for sharing some invaluable info and tips for someome like myself who's thinking about making the same move as you made last year...from T to C. I am going to get in touch with you guys later this evening via email and hoping you will respond and help me make the same move. I am sure I can't find kinder and more genuinely friendlier people than you guys and I am so glad I happened to stumble upon your video at the very right time ❤
Definitely have to have your own vehicle and snow tires 😁. You get used to not driving after a fresh snowfall unless you really have to 😊 One thing I never knew until a few years ago was in fall we really only get a lot of yellows…..when I saw fall out east…..bright reds, orange, yellow, green I felt deprived lol 😂😭
Been here all my life ... i always tried moving away from Calgary, and always end up coming back ❤ go up north the harvest hills . Long path ways for walks, hiking , and biking 😁
Well I lived in Toronto for a few years, horrible place. Sold my house and moved to Saskatoon. Toronto, in the summertime is hot and very humid. If you don’t have an air conditioner you better spend your last dollars and buy one. Hot. In winter it’s still humid and very very cold where the cold goes right through you to your bones. The 401, well you better never be in a rush. Slight snowfall and half a dozen semi’s are jack knifing. And the more we hear about sly Trudeau, the more we don’t like the east. The actual land formations and waterways in Ontario and Quebec are beautiful. But the rest is a major disappointment. Don’t even want to go back there and visit my relatives.
Great Question! It defiantly causes more work such as bundling up to take our dog out and making sure that our car and house are functioning properly while its this cold. with that said its a small price to pay to be here in Alberta. And the sun is out today!
Give it up for the Northwest! 🤜🏼🤛🏼 Just got here within the last month with entire family (5). Absolutely better raising a family here; whatever is left of the Canada I know, what Canada is supposed to be, it is here in Alberta.
I was in Toronto for 3 years. now im living in BC. the weather here is awesome but the living cost is super super crazy high. I'm thinking to move in Calgary but im not sure if i can live so quiet in suburb since all things closed at 5pm??? also i have no idea about weather, is it worst than Toronto or pretty much the same? thanks for guidance...
I will appreciate if you guys share some information about baby birth in Calgary , we’re planning move from Vancouver to Calgary and we expects kid birth soon.
Even if someone chose to replace it every 3 months, which would be ridiculous. That works out to an annual bill of $1200 or $100/month. That's what you save in fuel price compared to anywhere else.
@@JohnSmith-mi8zy Yeah move away from your provinces where there are housing problems, bring those problems to Calgary, price out locals, and vote liberal to repeat the same cycle. Clown.

Salt is not effective below -10 so the city uses a sand/gravel mix. Glad you guys are enjoying your time so far in YYC!
Interesting, we did not know that! Thanks so much, we’re super happy to be here!
Same for Northern Ontario.
Can’t wait to travel to Calgary someday 😎

I replace the windshield every 3 years approx. On NE they can do it dirty cheap. I prefer that than having a rusty car because of the salt.

Welcome to the neighborhood 👋 I’m a few hours south, but still the same back yard!!
We drove our convertible with a top down on Jan.1st because it was +5 and sunny!! 😂

Just watched this. Great video. However, Calgary does use salt from 0 to -10, and a sanding chip mixture for colder weather.
I heard that salt also damages the road over time leaving pot holes.
