    My wife and I just bought this game "blindly" at the game store. I've played a LOT of games of various kinds, but reading through the instructions on this, I'll admit, I never came close to really 'getting' it. We ended up playing something else and I vowed to figure this game out. I might need to watch parts of this video again, but WOW, this was 50 times better at explaining the game than the supplied instructions sheet. THANK YOU!

      LITERALLY just commented the same thing, except it was with a friend not a wife... we had to put it away because its too complex to learn from the poorly worded manual.

    Been gaming for a very very long time now . Starting as a kid with army solider on a table top 60 years ago. I like How to vids to get me started into a game or to see if i will buy in the future. You how to on L5R was the best how to video I have every seen, and I watch and study many of the How To, constantly. Thank you so very much being I have purchased L5R to learn to play.

    Excellent work. One very small but important detail I should add: bowed characters can still use their actions as long as bowing is not a pre-requisite.

    I don't think I will ever play this game with anybody in real life. However I do enjoy researching the lore about LF5. And watching this video mostly reminds me of my youth-days playing Yo-Gi-Oh! Having to know the instructions, Playing some game here and there, collecting cards, And having pride in the custom deck you've put together. Good times.

  • @FREEFROMITALL

    I bought this game today and we had to put it away after about 45 mins of set up because it is so complex and there is so much going on, its actually worse than MTG to "teach" some one, especially to try and have 2 new players pick it up. I feel like that is why it is not as widely popular.
    If it takes more time to set up and learn than to actually play, that's an issue...
    Putting that aside. I wanted to not waste $45 on it, so I said I'll google a youtube video to try and learn more easily and be able to set it up quicker.... This video was GREAT and really helped...
    One thing I have an issue with though, is the starter decks you get with that box, do NOT contain 40-45 cards per deck...
    You get under 20 of the left side cards, and after you draw 4 at the start of the game, you only have 6 cards on the right side... (where you should have at least 40)
    Why would the game box not include enough cards to actually play the game properly?
    ALSO, I have a box of cards I bought previously.... I had played it maybe 3 years ago? Do those cards no longer work with this game or can I use them? (some one mentioned something about gold in a comment below, that seems familiar, so if they have gold costs can I just say thats "fate" or are the old cards more or less tinder?)

    • @PeachHackNetrunner
      @PeachHackNetrunner  6 лет назад

      You cannot use cards from the old version of the game -- they are not compatible.
      As for why you can't build full decks with a single copy of the core set: the logic FFG has stated before is that they wanted to include enough different cards in the core set to give the game a reasonable amount of variety, but also wanted to keep the cost of a single copy of the core affordable enough to keep the barrier to entry lower. Thus, the core set has many singleton copies of cards in it, with the intent being that you can buy a single copy of the core to get a feel for the game, and if you like it, then the recommendation is to buy 1-2 more copies of the core set to fill out the missing cards in your collection and allow you to build full-size decks. If a single copy of the core set came with enough cards to make full-size decks out of the box, it would either be much more expensive, or the card variety would be much lower.
      That is the FFG reasoning, anyway. For what it's worth, you can build 2 full-size decks for Netrunner out of a single copy of the Core set, which is very nice. This is possible due to players only needing 1 deck at a time, allowing for a reasonable amount of overlap and card-sharing between decks while still maintaining good variety.

    I'm turn. I like that when you break a providence, you can still add cards to it. (losing the ability to have four cards really hurt my crane deck when it played against more aggressive military decks like mantis or crab.) but I don't know if I like the thought of my shugenja's going away and losing all of their attached spells. I'd also like to see how easy it is to gain honor OUTSIDE of conflicts. (something my crane deck did very well.) an honor ramp stall deck was definitely a strategy in the ccg, and it seems balanced against the military decks. (except for super fast decks. but speed decks have always been the bane of stall decks.)
    all in all, it's definitely a DIFFERENT game, but i'm still on the fence about whether or not it's a GOOD game.

      It definitely feels like a mash between Netrunner's influence system, Thrones combat system, and Conquest's back and forth action system, while keeping the old L5R ccg feel of 2 decks, while removing the snowballing combat and tempo.

    Thank you for fantastic explanation! There is still a thing I don't understand: that is the use of the actions. On the rules manual I read there are "actions time" in every phase, even in the 4th and 5th. I correctly understand? And, in my turn how many actions can I do? Grazie!!!

    • @PeachHackNetrunner
      @PeachHackNetrunner  7 лет назад +1

      Those are "action windows". An action window is an opportunity for both you and your opponent to take actions, back and forth (starting with the first player), as many times as you want. So if I'm first player and there is an action window, I could take an action, then you, then me, then you, etc. back and forth until we both pass.

    • @gianmarcocellini8539
      @gianmarcocellini8539 7 лет назад

      Grazie! Thank you. And the cards I can use in theese action windows are only Events or Attachments ecc.?

    • @PeachHackNetrunner
      @PeachHackNetrunner  7 лет назад +1

      You can play characters, attachments, and use any action on any card that has the word "Action" in bold text on it, provided you have not already used it yet this turn. This includes Events that are actions, and actions on characters, attachments, strongholds, provinces, holdings.

    • @gianmarcocellini8539
      @gianmarcocellini8539 7 лет назад

      All is clear now! Thank you! (a pratical advice: how to take mind the action already executed???)

    • @PeachHackNetrunner
      @PeachHackNetrunner  7 лет назад +1

      Typically you just try to remember that you've already used a card's action. Some players use tokens to place on the card to remind themselves that it has already been used for the round.

    I started playing shortly after the original Imperial Edition came out, when they were giving away free decks. I last played shortly after Celestial Edition came out, but wasn't in full mastery of it (decks not yet perfected) when all the places to play in my area seemed to all evaporate. So...this seems like the game has changed a *lot.* I wonder if folks still play the CCG, or is it now all-and-only the new LCG. It's not that I'm unwilling to learn the differences in this very different ruleset. I just don't want *all* my old stuff to be a total waste and loss. I am hoping some folks in my area (West Seattle) do *both* formats, and not just one of them.

    I have a Crane card Courtly Challenger which "Initiates a Duel" but does not specify which of my opponent's characters get chosen. Is there a standard rule in place for who chooses the defending duelist?

    • @bentorell
      @bentorell 4 года назад

      If it doesn't specify, then the person who initiates the duel chooses the participants. It must include one character from each side. If it's during a conflict, the chosen characters must be participating in the conflict. If the duel is initiated by an ability on a character, the character that initiated the duel must participate in the duel.

  • @slobodanvesela4149

    Other thing, what's the limite for one action ? From the rules i can read "limited to one by ROUND" but what's a round ? From the rules again i can see turn/phase/actionwindow but that's all
    For example, if my opponent attack my province who has "action - dishonored one opponent", i can play this one by conflict or one by turn and is it all ?

    • @PeachHackNetrunner
      @PeachHackNetrunner  7 лет назад

      1 round comprises all 5 phases of the game: Dynasty -> Draw -> Conflict -> Fate -> Regroup = 1 round. Every time you start the Dynasty phase, that is the beginning of a new round.

    • @PeachHackNetrunner

      Yes, that's correct. I intended the phrasing to mean an inclusive "gain", including the honor you gained at the start of the game. "Reach" might have been a better word, but I make it pretty clear what I meant by the end of the video. Thanks for the clarification!

  • @HeShouldHaveLeft

    When you put your dynasty cards on your provinces you say: "You may not look at these dynasty cards for the rest of the game," then promptly flip them over at the beginning of the first round. Am I missing something? I don't like unnecessary memory elements to games.That's why I'm wondering what you mean here.

    • @PeachHackNetrunner
      @PeachHackNetrunner  7 лет назад +2

      You can't look at your *facedown* dynasty cards for the rest of the game. The only time you can look at your facedown dynasty cards is when you are mulliganing. When you reach a point in the game where you must flip them up, then obviously you can look at them then, but your opponent will see them as well at that point. It isn't a memory thing, where you have to remember what your facedown cards are, because other than the first turn, you won't know what cards are about to be flipped faceup.

  • @warpaint9385
    @warpaint9385 7 лет назад +3

    So much going on in this game. I love the theme but seems too complicated.
    I don't like the fate token mechanic which forces you to discard characters without fate on them. Maybe it's a good idea, I'm not seeing it. I never played the original but I don't think that mechanic was in it.
    May sit on the fence for awhile like I did with Netrunner.

    • @infinitedm5396
      @infinitedm5396 7 лет назад +4

      It helps keep the board state clean. L5R can be -incredibly- busy, and that was in the original CCG. The new one has even more counters in it, so by keeping the board clean of personalities it helps focus the game and keep it from bogging down into a stalemate.

    • @warpaint9385
      @warpaint9385 7 лет назад +2

      Eric Ernewein well like I said I've never played it, maybe it's a good mechanic.
      I'll probably watch tonnes of reviews etc on this when it's released before I decide if I'm buying or not. I did that with Netrunner.

    • @monopoman
      @monopoman 7 лет назад +1

      Yep, as someone that played the original CCG competitively for a few years way back when it had the original card back, some boards would grow ridiculously large. Especially for some of the minor clans like Rat that would have out tons of characters and followers, so they definitely wanted to keep the board ever shrinking and probably encourage more attacks earlier.

    • @RPG_Bliss
      @RPG_Bliss 7 лет назад +1

    The problem with this great game it is its complexity. I hope the publisher simplify the game in another future edition. The same applies to Game of Thrones. Don't take me wrong. Simpler rules can have complex outcomes.

  • @siddin

    3 mins in... jeezes, all those pieces and instructions, eh. Haven't the creators seen Rosewater's 20 rules video?

    Great vid, man! However, for future vids you might want to cut out the long breaths.

      Raven so, what, he should take short ones?

      No, but he could edit them out in post-production. Try listening to an audiobook, they don't keep the long breaths in between takes, common practice.

      I agree. He could also re watch it for duplicates. He repeated the multiple ways to win the game like 5 times.

    Every game out there involves some kind of circle with different colors each,

    Ahhh, They ruined the game.
    No Spider Clan (Although, Spider got rid of their Necromancers in Twenty Kingdoms it seems - so its not as big of a hit as I thought, the hit just happened sooner it seems)
    No deaths during Battle resolution, people arbitrarily "retire" (instead of dying) during the fate phase.
    Ahhh, makes the game unplayable for me.
    Thanks for the explanation though.
    Never did like LCGs anyway.

    this game has lost its touch ever since alderac entertainment gave it out for fantasy flight to destroy to be honest i have more respect for wizards even though they had to hand it back after trying to place it side by side with magic
    i say alderac or even wizards need to take it back and bring back the glory days where you earn the right to harness the elements & not just use it for its benefit as well as that political conflict be resolved off the battlegrounds etc making the game great again and not just another weekend hipster boardgame

    This game is trash, they need to bring back the CCG. Fantasy Flight has only ever had 1 good game and that’s Grimm.
