Join us for a quick deck building tutorial that explains how we built our first decks from three (or fewer) Legend of the Five Rings Core Sets. This method is designed to get you playing as soon as possible so that you can explore L5R and then revisit deck building later with a greater understanding of the game.
Fantasy Flight Games has relaunched Legend of the Five Rings as a living card game (lcg), and it is a very deep system. Our Learning L5R series is designed to help new players overcome that feeling of being overwhelmed, replacing it with the confidence and understanding that leads to a truly enjoyable L5R experience.

Thank you so much for watching, sharing, and purchasing. It allows us to keep moving forward!
Men, I feel so appreciative for your coverage of L5R! Thank you! Ride or Die Crab for Life!
Very kind of you to say Michael. Happy to be on the journey with everyone!
Been eyeing this game in the back of my LGS for nearly a year now and I finally found y'all's video's and instantly bought it. Luckily the game is more affordable now, but I have been loving it! Thank you so much for your videos!
Great stuff guys, so pleased for the L5R content - can't wait for more!
Can't wait to get my hands on my pre-ordered cores and fancy Sakura tokens! This looks so great, and I'm excited to see your future content!
its 2021,, pandemic in full bloom, just getting into L5R, your vids are the best
awesome vid, you guys should have a twitch/youtube stream, i would love to see a L5R session played by you guys with some commentary
agreed, there is a huge market for stream this days and everyone on this channel is experienced and charismatic to entertain a crowd
Thank you for watching and the positive feedback! We have three games slated to be posted in the coming weeks, with in-game commentary. First one is this week!
Nice! Can't wait for the first game!
This week has come and gone! ;)
I played the former L5R game religiously. I loved the game, the cards, art, the story! I only played the Dragon clan and for a brief time was the #1 Dragon player in the world. I competed in every local tournament and at Gen Con for as long as my real life allowed. I am happy beyond belief that the game has been brought back. I have purchased my core set and await with excitement for it to appear in the mailbox. I knew that the game has changed with some of the old remaining so I was hesitant to buy back in. I am still having some reservations about the new version but perhaps they will resolve as I investigate the game play. One question from the start is: I notice that there are supplemental "packs" available now so Is it still required to buy two core sets to build a legal tournament deck?
I really hope Fu Leng and the Shadowlands deck makes an appearance.
I know you can get solutions for that on wood prix .
Steven, I have a question for you: does L5R offer you the same immersive gameplay and strategy as Netrunner? I can hear your detailed enthusiasm when listening to your Netrunner match commentaries. Do you feel like the revised core set of Netrunner can earn your trust to re-enter that game? Thank you!
Keep an eye on the next podcast!
Team Covenant Really looking forward to that video, I'm suppressed with Core 2 so far.
Should the title read, 3 core set deck building?
So, I am really excited about New L5R and at first I subscribed to the Core Set and the Pack Subscription, then I realized that I would need 3 Core set to really build a variety of Decks. So, then I preceded to order 3 of each, but then hours later I also realized that I would probably only need one Pack Subscription, Because It already comes with Complete Play Sets. I hope that 3 Boxes and 1 Pack Subscription will do what I need.
The absolutely ideal setup is 3x Core Set, 1x Pack Subscription, 1x Box Subscription. That will get you 3 Core Sets when the game releases, every Dynasty Pack when it releases, and then every Deluxe Expansion when it releases!
This is really helpful. Thank you. Is there a link to these deck lists?
Guys, you stated that the Assassination card does not have a cost. That is incorrect. It costs 0 fate, but does cost you 3 honor, which is a high cost.
is Team Covenant going to cast L5R tourneys eventually? I would love that!
Stay tuned!
me understand this is a very old video, but, what i'd like to know is, for someone who just recent got a start in the Living Card Game, in order to start a deck in Legend of the 5 Rings, can i get lost with buy one copy of each of the current available products? or would i still need, excuse the locked caps, 3 CORE SETS?
I'm just getting into L5R and I'm building my decks using your videos as a guideline while putting my deck lists into Bushi Builder. Sorry informative video except for two problems - looks like Charge and For Greater Glory are now restricted from tournament builds. What would one choose as some alternatives for those?
So in order to get 3 of each of my clan cards I need to buy 3 core sets? That's kinda b.s.. I was expecting to buy the core set and be able to build 2 legal decks for my friend and I. And with the cards that come in the box there isn't enough to build 2 legal decks if you need 40 in both Dynasty and Conflict.
Are you sleeving all these? Do people typically sleeve lcg cards?
Yeah, absolutely!
Love that game! :D Great video! :D
A friend and I are trying to see if we are both going to get into the game. Is there a way to do example decks like the ones in the book for Crane and Lion for the other clans without causing a need for multiple core sets?
Absolutely! Just grab a single Core Set and you can build two decks easily enough! Basically just take all of your clan cards, split the neutrals, and you are good to go.
Having to buy 3 core sets for the full immersion of the game is a joke. FFG love to run there prices up and come out with more and more to buy. While it is great that X-wing and other games like netrunner have a HUGE amount of different pieces and cards it becomes too much to be able to keep up with the game and i think puts people off getting into the game.
With that said this looks like an amazing game and i love these run downs you guys do of games and things, especially the ashes ones; hope you cover the expansions soon, love what you guys do and love the content, wish there was more gaming in my area available
Thank you for watching! The good news about the L5R Core Set is that it is composed of almost all 1-ofs, unlike Cores of the past. So at least no dupes when you buy multiples!
eddrocks2 seriously. is it too much to ask that FFG sell a core set extension pack that fills in your play set? in this case it wouldn't need to include the strongholds and province cards, so it's not as if it could displace the core box.
If you pick up the core set at your local game store the day of release, will you be eligible for the Sakura tokens
Anyone who pre-orders Core Sets from us, whether picking up locally in Tulsa or shipped, will receive one Sakura Token with every Core Set.
I realize I'm jumping into this late, but I'm trying to figure out the "buying 3 core sets" thing. My main question is, if I just want to play Unicorn, and my friend just wants Lion, would we be able to split 3 core sets and each have 40-card legal decks? Or are there too many neutral cards we would both want for that to be viable?
That would work with three core sets, with a bit of sharing.
What are the "Role" cards used for? I notice that you don't go over these in this video or in your Learning L5R games...
We covered them in the upcoming Advanced Deck Building Guide. Keep it locked!
Great introduction to this game and a massive help. Quick question. You say the Lion deck has 13 characters for a 39 character deck with three cores but I count 14 cards per Clan. Did I get an extra card or did you guys get short changed? :)
We probably just miscounted! 14 per clan sounds correct.
Guys do you think we will see a faction deluxe box, like in GOT? If yes, then maybe buying just 1 core and the deluxe might work, right?
We are expecting the same style of Deluxes, but no concrete information on it. We would be incredibly surprised if there is not an offering in that format. Hopefully they do theme Deluxes instead of faction Deluxes for rotation reasons, but we will see.
Guys, I hope you don't mind a quick rules clarification question here in the comments about the deck building video, but you mentioned Charge as an important card to include because it allows you to move a character from one of your provinces into play, directly into a conflict, and it sounds like it only costs 1 fate. Is that right? No matter what the moved character's fate cost is? If so, that IS an amazing card! Or do you still have to pay the fate cost of that character when you use the Charge card?
Charge moves any character in, regardless of fate cost! Even a clan champion! You do not have to pay the fate cost of the character when using Charge. This highlights the difference between "playing" a character and "putting a character into play". When you "play" a character, you pay its fate cost and can add additional fate to keep it on the board longer. When you "put a character into play" the fate cost on that character is irrelevant and you cannot add additional fate.
Awesome! Thank you for taking the time to reply!
P.S. In your video entitled "Is L5R the Next Big Game?" Jonathan mentioned that he was redesigning the website. Good job! I like your Covenant website a lot. Also, thanks, Jonathan, for the book recommendation (Super Better). I have added it to my book list.
Thank you for sharing this, Clare. He will be thrilled to hear both of your comments!
Greedy qustion here, but are there coming more vods today. 😅 love the content boys
The best kind of greedy! Posting a game this week!
What is splashing?
Using cards from another color/faction/etc depending on the game. In this specific case is using fate cards from another clan. The amount of cards used depends on the influence of the stronghold.
Alexander covered it. An example of splashing would be a Crab Clan deck including cards from the Phoenix Clan. There is a mechanic for this in the deck building rules. When first starting with the game, we suggest ignoring the splashing rules entirely. Then once you have played a lot of games, start looking at splashing the cards that will help your deck the most.
Newbie question, what does "splash" mean?
Thanks for all you do.
Hello John! These decks are built with 2 cores, and "splash" is slang for using cards from different factions. L5R calls it "Influence".
@@teamcovenant So, I have a single core set, and yet to play. Is it acceptable to build decks by splashing?
L5R has it's own rules for splashing and it is really advised to splash. Each faction has a number of points to use in cross-clan cards! Dive into the rulebook and get some games in! No player we know would mind teaching the game to someone.
If you play Crab, listen to Crabulon by evil scarecrow. You will not regret it.
Hello, I just picked up three core sets....you guys mentioned providing lists for each of the Clans out of three core sets ...where can I find those lists?
Right here: bit.ly/2OzY8fp
Scroll to the bottom for our index, then pick your clan!
@@teamcovenant Thanks for this ...quick question in the core sets it seems like I am missing a holding card for the Unicorn Clan? Am I supposed to have one or was this by design?? confused maybe they forgot to pack it in the box?
@@Scubasgamecorner The Core Set should contain one Stronghold for each faction, the Unicorns is Golden Plains Outpost. Holdings are separate cards and we do not believe the Unicorn clan has any holdings in the Core Set.
You should check your contents against a master list, like this one: l5r.gamepedia.com/Core_Set
and if you find any discrepancies give FFG Customer Support a call!
@@teamcovenant Thanks.....ok sorry to be a pest, but it wasn't clear in the video ...if I have three core sets can I build all the decks you have suggested in the link provided or will i need more than three sets?
@@Scubasgamecorner We only used three core sets, so you should be able to build everything listed! You are absolutely not a bother, ask anything!
Does this "3 core sets" setup imply that for a "proper" 2-player game you need 6 core sets?
Only if you both wanted to use the exact same cards!
@@teamcovenant thanks for the response. I was mostly thinking of the neutral cards, i.e. I got the impression that some of them were "the best" or useful in most decks.
Actually, what I though doesn't make sense, because there are two copies of each neutral card, so with 3 core sets, you get six of each neutral card, so you can build two "proper" decks for two different clans. Sorry for not having looked that up before asking the pointless question :)
Is there a better way to really get into this game other than buying three copies of the Core Set? Seems like a waste, especially if I just want to focus on one clan to start out.
Three copies is the classic way to get into an LCG - but two copies is pretty solid. You can always start with one or two and then buy the third if you need it!
What comes in the core set? Can I make a legal deck with just one set?
So when the website says "The Legend of the Five Rings: The Card Game Core Set comes with everything a player needs" that's not actually what that means? Or can three different clan decks be made out of three core sets? I was looking forward to this game but if I need three core sets at £30 each just to play then I won't bother.
cosmicmousse no, it comes with everything you need. Every card in the game and all the tokens and 2-3 of every neutral. You can make two decks out of it, learn how to play, pick a clan, and then jump in.
The value here outstrips every other TCG out there, hands down. This is FFGs best release yet. Buy the TCG equivalent of a single box, in three instalments, and boom. 3-9 copies of every card in the game.
You can make a 30 card deck out of the Core Set without issue. There are guidelines for doing so in the included rulebook, and this is a great way to get a taste of the game. If you love it, buy another Core Set or two and follow the instructions given here!
Team Covenant isn't it a 40 card deck size? If so, a single core set that can only make a 30 card deck than I'll need 2.
How do you even know what clan is inside every core set? I came from the old L5r where you got what clan you wanted.
Wait... so that first deck needs to be 40-45 cards, but the core comes with 20 neutral, and 13-15 per clan? Good lord. I usually get a single core of an LCG to play with a friend to see if we like it enough to want to get in to, but it seems basically impossible here unless we finagle the rules to play with smaller decks. At BEST a clan will have 25 cards for that deck.
Obviously I know LCGs tend to want you to get multiple cores, but in the past I've at least been able to get reasonable games going between two people with a single core. If it was going to be this bad, they should have just upped the price and made a bigger box with more cards in it. The model of NEEDING multiple cores is such BS. Put it all in one thing, then charge more for that thing. Jesus.
Well, you can make a tournament legal deck with one core set, using neutrals and splashing from the other clans. It would be a legal play deck, but maybe not the most optimized legal deck out there.
You can play enough matches with the two starter decks for you and a friend to decide whether to go all in or not
@@teamcovenant Full size clan starter decks!? Like A.G.O.T. "recently" recieved? F.F.G. is publishing the 2018 world deck for $20... id drop $20 on a FULLY FUNCTIONAL CLAN INTRO DECK... hint hint covenant pass it on to your buddy Nate French!!
More Destiny!!!
Three core set appears to be the recommendation for deck crafting with a friend or ye'old local game store.
Does that mean four sets if all players are in a single household?
Six sets could be grounds for a divorce
Better work your clan cards into the prenuptial.
I think it's really rude of FFG to sell a game that hasn't got enough cards and no rules reference.
I get that the online version will be updated but come on, new game, you need something. Down track, sure when the rules need tweaking but straight up, not good enough guys.
It's ridiculous that you have to buy 3 sets and end up with a heap of components that are useless.
Does it even say "starter set" on the box? Maybe it does, not sure.
I just invested in this game and I'm not buying 3 sets as I only play casual so I'll get some dynasty packs and use 30 card decks to get me by until I get even more dynasty packs to get me up to 40-45 cards.
Why couldn't they just add those extra cards and up the price so we wouldn't be discussing this outrageous decision of theirs to rip people off. Shouldn't they be looking after their loyal customers?
Another option would be to sell just the core cards in packs as well to avoid multiple tokens, rulebooks etc.
I really don't get it.
The size of their game boxes is also another annoyance I won't get into much but frustrating. FFG, go back to the old Lotr LCG size box, the original Netrunner size box? The new boxes are useless, too small.
Still enjoy the games though.
Why put 45 cards in the Destiny deck when the minimum is 40? Consistency and all that..
We will cover that in the advanced deck building guide!
WTF? I need 3 core sets to get into this game properly? Fucking more FFG bullshit. I thought Netrunner (of which I have significant investment in) was cheeky, needing 2 core sets to be viable. Where does it end? The next LCG will need four core sets? People buying into this let FFG know that this shit is ok, exactly like video game developers and microtransactions. I won't support that shitty practice and won't support this either. Shame because I love the theme of this game.
We asked FFG's head of studio about the 3-Core policy if you want to know more information. ruclips.net/video/_6OCXOzY6hA/видео.htmlm49s
THREE CORE SETS. $120 RETAIL? GET FUCKING BENT.
Alright, my knee stopped jerking and I did the math. Ignoring neutrals and deck uniques, each faction in the core set has ~24 cards you need two more copies of. In terms of volume you need the equivalent of 5.6 sixty-card expansion packs, or about 83 USD suggested retail price.
...So, roughly the cost of two extra core set boxes. It's frustrating to have such a large initial buy-in for a game that's marketed like a subscription. But it's hardly a rip-off, either.
A fair assessment! Also your use of "get bent" in the original comment is wonderful. We jokingly picked it up around the office last year and it really is an under utilized expression.
Team Covenant Somebody suggested single-faction core set packs to make up the difference. I really like this idea. Fantasy Flight makes a strong argument, their core sets are already pretty big and they should function as a playable-out-of-the-box experience. Faction starters could be a great way to bridge the gap between the casual tryout and more committed play.
"Get bent" keeps the tone of more profane expressions despite being safe as a nerf gun - but only 90s kids will remember.
"get playing as soon as possible" "with 3 core sets" stopped there.
Can't blame you Dex! Not sure why FFG does this with their lcgs. The idea is to give as diverse an experience as possible in one box, but it seems to be a constant point of tension with new players.
Did not make sense, did not help. Much sad
