I recently found a bunch of the hemlock varnish shrooms... I dehydrated them for long term.... and throw a chunk in my coffee every morning.... God bless
The name is interesting as it’s the same sound given to the ancient ones referred to as the Rishis. I’m in the UK south and just started on the journey into medicinal mushrooms, Thank you so much for this insightful video.
The correct (Japanese) pronunciation of this mushroom's name is RAY-shee, rather than "ree-shee" - but they're still pretty cool! :) I hope your mycological journey is going well!
After watching this video a couple years ago, I finally found some Ganoderma tsugae while on vacation. Rented a cabin on Beech Mountain NC (Blue Ridge Mountains). Eastern Hemlocks don't grow where I live in Central KY, so I asked the owner if I could take a few specimen if I found 'em, and he said that was fine. I'm presently making my first Reishi tincture (I have made hot water extracts of applanatum).
Hi Adam, huge favor: in the future could you show your process for making a Reishi tincture? I know there are other videos out there but you are most knowledgable. Helping make sense of which Reishi species would be best for this purpose would also be a huge help. In Connecticut we have red, gold and hemlock varieties. Many thanks
That was very well organized. I've recently gotten into mycology and have found ganoderma applanatum a well as ganoderma sessile. Both are in the drying process at the moment but I cant wait to try it as a tincture.
I saw almost like reishi mushroom on my coconut tree not so sure , now I am sure after watching your video and the forming in the beginning of the mushroom at early stage , it is sure reishi for sure
Grew up near DuBois. Parents didn't know much about mushrooms, but I was taught all about finding teaberries and mint. Also chewed on a lot of birch bark. Seeing this video definitely made me home sick for such beautiful surroundings.
Great video. I just found this mushroom in Florida and was looking up to identify it. I’m checking out your website. Maybe we will see some things in Florida? I know it’s based in PA but I enjoy learning about mushrooms and plants. Thanks for sharing your passion.
Very nice talk. I am interest in chemical composition of Reishi, can you tell me the methods, standard to evaluate the chemical composition of Reishi, please? It growth up here, but we don't know when should we harvest the Reishi? Thanks
Thanks Adam, another great informative vid. Love your content. Your my go to RUclipsr when I have a few mins to brush up on my foraging skills and learn so much more in the process.
I didn’t go through the comments to search so sorry if you already answered, but what are the common sizes of these mushrooms, also, when is the time to harvest, how do you harvest, is it dried then ground? Thanks for the info you seem very knowledgeable! My family and I have been into mushroom hunting, we strictly take pictures and research them, but would like to get into harvesting the medicinal and beneficial ones. Thanks for the help.
Thank you for another wonderfully informative video! This is my 1st season mushrooming & you have taught me so much! I am making tinctures with reichi!
Are you sure they weren't appalantum or a different species of ganoderma? I've seen artist conks, red belts, and several other brackets about 3ft across right here by my house
Have found quite a few reishis since watching your videos on the subject, including some today. Am waiting till they mature, per your suggestion, before harvesting so that they can drop their spores....
Adam-I have found 2 different groups of Ganoderma tsugea in 2 different areas here in Vermont, but this 2nd group I found seemed well past their prime and I read to take caution when they are decaying as molds that grow on them are toxic. Could you show the bottom of the Reishi-what it SHOULD look like so we can distinguish between one that is good for processing for medicine and one that is past its prime? Thanks for all you do. Roxane
Hello Adam, as always another wonderful video !! In your opinion what is the best way to ingest Reishi mushrooms , tincture , powder as in a tea or capsule form ? In tincture form is the base carrier better to be alcohol or a water base ? I am not sure of your daily occupation my friend and being your a young guy with your God given talent of being one with plants and nature, if I were you I would pursue a career in holistic medicine, the world awaits you !!!!! Keep up your great work !!!
+peter bochek Peter - I prefer to ingest this particular species in tincture form. The tea is rather bitter unless you mix it with other herbs. The dual extracted tincture contains both the alcohol and water soluble fractions, so it's almost as if I am consuming a concentrated tea. I recommend dual extracted tinctures with all medicinal mushrooms (both alcohol and water). Thanks for the kind words and your support! -Adam
Thank you sooo much for writing scientific nomenclature correctly!!!!! Capital letter for the genus and lower case for the species. Irritates me to no end when people get it wrong!!
I have been searching if I can take Reishi and other mushrooms alike with antipsychotics but I keep getting the results of magic mushrooms. I have reas that medicinal mushrooms can help with depression and anxiety, something I have been meaning to take.
Hi Adam, I have an old gum tree stump which we buried in my front yard. For the past 5 years now these mushrooms grow up through my lawn. If I let them grow they get pretty big, they turn mostly like a dark reddish shiny look. Do you know what they are? Should I be saving them or should I continue to throw them away? Thanks, Joe
Adam.. I believe I found a Golden reishi (Ganoderma Curtisii) here in the southeast.. my iPhone app identified it as such.. do I have to dry it to make a tenture? After I dry it (I assume) then do I grind it up?..
None that I know of. There are some that look somewhat similar but none that grow on hemlock. I also don't know of any shelf mushrooms in north america that are poisoness. I am a forager but NOT a mycologist. Reishi are so easy to get right every time. One that looks similar and grows on evergreen is the red-belted polypore b ut that is reputed to have medicinal properties as well. As do artist conks. Learn to identify hemlocks and you won't have a problem. Or as Adam suggests go with a group or a forager like me. Cheers
Awesomness as always. I beleive mine are growing on some old stumps. My yard is mostly tall straigt pines. Not jack pines...maybe red pines. There is a maple with exposed roots close to the reshi. If i laid hemlock logs around this area, anyone think i have a chance to grow this patch?
+Amy Nguyen Check out areas dominated by hemlock trees. Usually, I find hemlocks near swift water, springs, or cliffs near streams. Visit these areas in June, and you should have no problem finding reishi. :)
Hi Adam great video, I have a quick question I have a dead maple tree which seems to be growing a reishi but it's not waxy. I'm in central Ontario Canada and have pics of it. Any way you might be able to help identify it?
Well reishi season is on in northern NY. If we'd just get some rain and Canada would stop burning we might get a good flush. Preliminary scouting in a small gulf turned up a couple emerging but my main haunts are dry as a bone and temps have turned cooler. Good for packing out but reishi don't like cool and dry. Not sure of wildfire fall-out dust too. Last year 120 pounds , dry weight. Most went to Cali.
I hate to waste alcohol consumption on a tincture. Can I extract the benefits of this mushroom by having wine with a meal that includes ganoderma tsugae?
Adam. I love your videos. you are Awsome. . do you know anything about the polypore mushroom wolfporia? I would appreciate any info you can provide. I am having a hard time finding info on it. thanks keep up the great work!
I found a mushroom on my new property in western Michigan. Grand Haven, which is the border of lake Michigan. I'm not positive which kind of mushroom it is, i was wondering if you could help me out? I have a picture of it, how can i send to you?
Adam: I have old growth Hemlock on my property on Beaver Island MI and I find Ganoderma tsugue every year growing on blowdowns. I now put in about 12 grams of Tsugue in my 2 liters of Chaga tea that I make every 10 to 12 days. My wife and I drink about 1/2 to a whole cup per day. I make it with cinnamon and ginger- takes out much of the bitterness. I fear that by just soaking the Tsugue in with my Chaga tea for 24 hours (starting with boiling water) I may not be getting the full value out the Tsugue. Adam- do you have an suggestions?
I found reishi 2 times the 1st time they were red an fresher but the 2nd time it was darker dyed out an it has brown spores so I'm not sure yet what to think
Is Ganodermataceae the same? I took a picture on September 9, 2022, of a wild mushroom growing at the very base of a tree and the app Picture This identified it as Ganodermataceae.
Hello Adam, I didn't realize Ganoderma was prevalent in West Pa. ! Have you ever found any growing in Deer Lakes Park, which I live close to ? Also , what are your thoughts on distilling reishi mushrooms to produce a tincture via a glass lab ware chemistry setup as you would do with leafy herbs and plants ? Your input and wisdom , as always is most appreciated !

Also do you ever have enough reishi mushrooms to sell in their" as found" condition ? I do plan on purchasing your Reishi tincture soon ! Keep up the great videos my friend !!
I found Ganoderma Oregonese today. I've spent many hours today confirming, studying, and learning how I want to process it.
I admire your passion. Pennsylvania is a beautiful state.
I recently found a bunch of the hemlock varnish shrooms... I dehydrated them for long term.... and throw a chunk in my coffee every morning.... God bless
Love this so much. I just gotten some today
One of my lipstick had Ganoderma Lucidum extract in it and I think it explains that I feel calm these last few days.

Have any studies been done on the Reishi mushroom's ability to modulate the cytokine storms we are seeing in severe Covid 19 infections?

Can you talk about the different types of reishis. Cos I want to know if they are all the same. Thanks
What about Ganoderma Sessile? It is good for medicinal purposes? Tnx.
Can you show us the difference of poisonous and non-poisonous??

Adam can you tell us what your dual extractions recipe is? Thanks!
Would’ve appreciated more of an identification
Thank you for the information
Great video, very well done...
+TheSmokinApe Thank you!
I found reishi 2 times the 1st time they were red an fresher but the 2nd time it was darker dyed out an it has brown spores so I'm not sure yet what to think
I have a stump growing something similar .. I wish I could accurately identify what it is.. looks like Reishi Mushroom .. just not sure.
Is Ganodermataceae the same? I took a picture on September 9, 2022, of a wild mushroom growing at the very base of a tree and the app Picture This identified it as Ganodermataceae.
nice hair day!
Thank you so very much!!
If you make the red reishi tea is it supposed too grow on different trees than the different uses
Just found my first one!

Regarding distillation, typically this is a way to extract essential oils from plants. Most of the well-studied compounds in fungi can be extracted simply through hot water (polysaccharides) or ethanol (triterpenes), though I suppose there may be advantages to steam distillation. I've never met anyone doing it this way... if you decide to do it, let me know and I'll count you as the first I know!
Anyway, thanks for the comment, and I hope you find this information useful!
