50 years later and our generation's music still lives...Best times for sure ,,, You had to be fortunate to grow up in the 70's .. And I'm among the fortunate ,,,,,How groovy is that ? lol
Mel is a great bass player and great sound in those early years he and Don made a great rhythm section and of course mark was the soul and heart of GFR,Mel used to play a bit like reggae concept, the bass line is like a loop always supporting the drums and the song itself.
Thanks for uploading...always wanted to see how this was played on the frets lovely notes this song has on bass line. Why in hell don't bands bring their BASS ALIVE?
For "On Time" the groups debut , Mel's Bass was recorded through an Amp and was mixed alot lower than on this album .. For the Red Album , the Bass practically dominates and carries the flow of the tunes much better. I believe He recorded this album through the Board and Over Drove the Levels to get this sound ...
Hey Pitch, it's been a while! :-) Maybe some more vids? ;-) Smoke on the Water? ;-) I'd love to see you doing that jazzy-funky triplet thing during guitar solo.
Goody! I have played the same song since my dad took the LP album home in the mid seventies. I think you should play more legatto style. Are you using Seymour Duncan Quarter Pounders?
THANKS PF. I HAVE A BIG BEN 1X15 AND A PEAVY 1X12 CABINET AND AN AMPEG COMBO. I AM LOOKING FOR A BASS FUZZ DISTORTION PEDAL. DO YOU HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS?
@WS NONE. Digitec makes an excellent bass pedal. That's what I use. I run my bass into that then I "Y" out of the pedal. One output runs into my 350 watt Peavey amp which pushes a Carvin 4-10 cabinet with neoprene drivers to push my highs and mids. The other output of my pedal goes into my 300 watt Carvin amp which pushes a modified Fender 2X15 cabinet and two Carvin individual 1X15 inch speaker cabinets (all 4-15s upgraded to high wattage capacity) to handle the low end. In the old days I used to bi-amp by running my first amp into the second amp then to all my speakers but I started having to replace the power transistors on the second amp so I went this route. I can push more power without stressing my electronics. Anyway on this pedal you get 40 factory preset sounds. Then you can tweek each one of those if you want to add or take away anything, then store those effects into 40 other vacant locations on the pedal so you actually get 80 stored sounds. It has wah, distortion (overdrive or fuzz), chorus, delay, phaser and other effects. You can also choose from different simulated amp sounds (Fender, Ampeg and so on). Then you can choose from different simulated speaker cabinets sounds like Ampeg and Fender 8X10, 4X10, 2X15, 1X15 and I think a 1X18. It's almost endless what you can do with it. I haven't scratched the surface on mine.
@Fred Thompson. Would like to see him do the cover to I come tumbling. I am polishing that one up so I can post it. It will be tough but I will get it done. Noone else has stepped up to the plate like (the drum channel) has posted. So I'd say it's time I step up to it myself.
@Whitevaliantwarrior. True it does give your tone more definition but I can play alot faster by plucking with my fingers than with a pick. I've always noticed that Mel didn't use his left pinky finger much but either way he was a beast on the bass. I guess whatever is most comfortable to you is what matters. I remember when I was playing my bass in 8th grade in stage band class using a thumb pick. One day my teacher told me "let me see that thing you have on your thumb". I took it off and handed it to him. He tossed it into the trash can and told me "from now on I want to see you pluck the strings with your fingers." Ever since then I did just that. And the rest is history.
I have played this song using both a pick and my fingers. Two different sounds. I find using my fingers is faster and gives a deeper sound. I guess it's what you prefer for the sound.
Goodb job buddy......Mel was so trgically underated in the music buisness ,never understood why.............

Thanks for uploading...always wanted to see how this was played on the frets lovely notes this song has on bass line. Why in hell don't bands bring their BASS ALIVE?
Because GRAND FUNK played in such a way that the blues and soul comes together. Add it with rock and got something good.

Awesome. Let me know if you want to make any virtual videos. Great job.

Hi Chad !

HEY PITCH FUZZY, WHAT KIND OF DISTORTION PEDAL ARE USING TO GET THAT FUZZ BASS SOUND? I LOVE IT.
WS NONE Distorsion pedal ? 😅
Marshall SB 👍🏻😛
THANKS PF. I HAVE A BIG BEN 1X15 AND A PEAVY 1X12 CABINET AND AN AMPEG COMBO. I AM LOOKING FOR A BASS FUZZ DISTORTION PEDAL. DO YOU HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS?
The basic fuzz is Big Muff, but if u wanna a different sound fuzz, looking elsewhere, like Black arts toneworks ;-)

Sound quality will feel like a little bad. If the twist to effector, I think even better.
Mel always played with a pick....and still does.
Yep, whitevaliantwarrior has a very good point, bass will have a different texture with pick, definitely differs from fingers.
Would love to see you play the bass lines to the songs " MARK SAYS ALRIGHT...T.N.U.C."
@Fred Thompson. Would like to see him do the cover to I come tumbling. I am polishing that one up so I can post it. It will be tough but I will get it done. Noone else has stepped up to the plate like (the drum channel) has posted. So I'd say it's time I step up to it myself.
Se parece mucho a Mel....! 😃
Excellent RENDITION. I too love to play GFR. Let's jam. I can make the videos, I just need the people
Still waiting
Good try....beautiful bass.
Because if you play bass, then you know that using a pick gives you a different tone then your fingers do...I'm not knocking his playing, just sayin'.
+Whitevaliantwarrior Wasen't it a THUMB PICK he used?
+Fred Thompson Check out, I Come Tumblin' , amazing bass by Mel and the drums are out of this world along with Farners cool guitar!
