I actually got to meet the main characters at a book signing at Barnes and Noble. The kid who plays Rowley was the only one who seemed excited to be there and talk to the people.
Greg being a narcissist isn't an accident. I think the appeal of the books could be best summarized as it was basically Archer for kids, a narcissist whose selfish egotism and delusional fantasies constantly get him and the people around him into trouble of his own making, and never learns a single thing. For a lot of kids it was their first introduction to that kind of mean spirited humor, and also an unreliable narrator who is probably telling a biased version of the story to make himself look good, and *still* looks like an ass.
I wonder if the fact that DOAWK and Archer were cartoons provided enough of a separation that made them enjoyable. Meanwhile, real kids being mean might hot too close to home (Dunno, havent watch any of the things I mentioned).
I dunno, one thing is seeing something as over the top as a James Bondian dude being a hysterical douchebag, the other is watching a film that has too many scenes of kids at the toilet and the characters being mostly unpleasant bullies/family members that get away with being jerks doesn't entertain me a lot.
That's why the sequels go in a different direction. They couldn't continue this way because you're not hearing the story from an unreliable narrator, you're seeing it as it is. The problem with the first one is that it is too loyal to the book
You should definitely watch the second one. Rodrick Rules is x100 better than any of the others. Dog Days is okay, but Rodrick Rules actually has a decent character arc for both Greg and Rodrick. Devon Bostick was an amazing Rodrick, and Greg is the least annoying in Rodrick Rules as well imo.
I agree, Rodrick Rules is far superior because both Rodrick and Greg really grow as characters and get something out of it, plus the jokes are a lot funniers.
This movie is actually super faithful to the book. There isn't really a plot it's just Greg recounting each day of his school year while struggling to seem cool and make poor choices. Yeah that's this movie
The author even stated that much of the main books paints Rowley as the protagonist, but we’re seeing everything through the eyes of Greg. It’s kind of like witnessing Harry Potter’s story through Draco’s eyes.
Tbh I prefer Greg 100% more than Rowley as a protagonist because Greg is such a little stinky, I can’t help but love when things go wrong for him which a lot does in the movies and books.
I remember reading the books with my younger brother years ago and they're written in the structure of a diary. So yeah, they follow kind of a slice-of-life format and can be read in short chunks. Also the reason why the weird girl under the bleachers has such little impact on anything is because she wasn't in the book. Her character was invented for the movie. And yeah Greg is an unlikable jerk in the books too but that kind of thing is slightly more tolerable when you're getting everything through a filter of unreality.
I was kinda into the book series as a kid, and what disappointed me about the movies is that Greg’s drawing hobby is almost never touched upon. There’s the school newspaper comic strip bit in the first movie, but that’s it. The rest of the series almost never mentions Greg’s drawings.
Me too. And when I found out they made a movie I was hyped. Unfortunately I couldn’t see it in theatres but YTV aired it on big fun movies a year later. Anyways, it is really disappointing.,
The other 2 are definately better than the first one. They learned that Greg being just a jerk that likes videogames and wants to be a billionare without having to do any work (not unlike actual billionares who inherit their wealth and maintain it through stolen wages now that I think about it) may be funny in the form of what's presented as his journal where some writing competancy is displayed, but there has to be more to the character if you want a film as the series went on.
I had an ironic relationship with this movie series. My parents loved these movies and somehow convinced themselves that I did too. I never saw any of the movies nor touched any of the books they got me, but they were convinced the books were some of my favorites.
Bless his heart, my dad did the same thing with me and the "Twilight" series. I think his mind process went something like, "She likes vampires. Twilight is about vampires. She loves Twilight!"
Roderick without a doubt is the memeiest character in the film. Plus the alarm was cause Roderick wasn't on screen since that alarm is a die hard fan of Roderick
As someone who's read every book up until Cabin Fever (I think). It always felt like Greg was just an observer of the insane things that happens in middle school, with him moving something along here and there but it never felt like he was a sociopath. It gave off the idea like YOU are Greg. Greg was your eyes into this world. Maybe I'm not remembering it well but it never felt like it was centered around Greg's personal life or goal. Everything else took center stage.
No, definitely not. Greg is not just a sociopath in the books, he straight-up doesn't learn anything in them. When Rowley breaks their friendship in the book, Greg says he's better off not carrying, "dead weight", around.
I feel like there's a difference between wimpy and jerk. Not even just a jerk, he's a manipulative jerk. "Hey, Rowley, ride your bike so I can throw a football at you" "hey, Rowley, I found a joke we can tell, but only I get to say the punchline" a wimp just gets beat up, is shy, is bullied
You will definitely enjoy when the series did a spin off in the books about the kid you enjoyed, Rowley. His representation of Greg is a lot more accurate to the Greg you saw in the movie.
@@supercloudreed I am aware, with books 2 and 3 in the second movie and book 4 in the third. I'm only referring to the book from Rowley's perspective, Diary of an Awesome Friendly Kid, which came after all the books that the movie series took after.
"We're back, and we have the combination!" Both a call to Rob and Doug's hiatus from the first viewing series; and a nod to the classic Space Balls quote.
Greg was never suppose to be likeable. He is suppose to be a self-centered narcissist. The sequels were better, though. If you're planning to do them, read the first four books in the series. You'll get a better idea of the characters.
Blehhhh…at least it introduced me to the books but in terms of enjoyment while watching it? This is the only emotion it invoked out of me and continues to invoke… 🤮
As someone who didn’t like the first movie, I surprisingly enjoyed Rodrick Rules. And why? For one, Greg is less mean, they tone down the juvenile crude humor, and I felt that it generally had a nice message about sibling rivalry.
I literally only remembered three things from this movie/ the books. The cheese touch, the dad being a lunatic, and Greg telling manny about about the potty monster. Idk why that last one stuck with me, but its always made me chuckle for some reason.
I always gave the first Diary Of A Wimpy Kid movie 6/10, i mean the actors all did an excellent job portraying the characters Zachary Gordon,Robert Capron all of them they were just phenomenal!
@@chasehedges6775 Indeed they were, too bad they were recast in The Long Haul though, but the reason why they were recast was because by the time that film was made Zachary and Robert were sadly too old to reprise the roles.
One thing that made the books better is that it threaded the needle really well of acknowledging that Greg is a selfish twerp while also telling it from the point of view of a character who doesn’t realize that fact. It actually ended up being kinda fascinating in that regard.
I couldn’t get into this movie when I was kid. This was just something that my parents dragged me to the theater to see even though I told them that I was going to hate it after watching the trailer but they didn’t listen. After watching it, I still hated and I don’t get why my parents liked it. I’m definitely on Doug’s side with this one. The movie was littered with gross out humor, mean spirited characters, and cringe worthy moments that were so bad that it left me… unsettled. 🤢 I just couldn’t stand it but at the very least, it did introduce me to the book series which I actually did enjoy. So it technically did it’s job.
Its funny that so many parents love these movies, my mom thinks they’re so funny and was constantly bringing up memories of having the same stuff stuff at school all the way from her own childhood (not the way the characters acted though)
As someone who grew up reading the books, I hated these movies. Greg was always a selfish asshole in the books but he was the teen movie equivalent Alex in a Clockwork Orange in that you could still be invested in the story despite how much you hate him and everything he did wrong would eventually come back to haunt him, giving him a micro character arc in each book. But in the movies they wrote him in a way where there trying to make you somehow root for him 🤨? And because of that it just turns him into an attention seeking prick rather than an interesting anti-hero.

Hi! Been a fan of your guys for years now and like how you've gone from just doing movies you hate to movies you can tolerate and even movies you really love. I'd love to see you guys do the Lethal Weapon movies as part of a month thing and the Dark Crystal.
Robert Capron, the guy who plays Rowley was in a couple episodes of The Haunting Hour. One in particular I suggest watching is "Catching Cold", it's creepy and well acted, and has a surprise guest that you will appreciate.
I think the point you guys are missing is that he’s not meant to be likable you’re meant to hate him but later on in the trilogy and at the end here he grows as a person
The fact that this movie is showing several kids on toilets very often makes me think of this: “That’s a weirdly specific fetish and I’m worried about you.”
You want to know how I know that I'm old? I'm 22, and I remember when the THIRD book (Diary of a Wimpy Kid: the Last Straw) was being released back in 2009. It's 2022 and altogether, the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series has 16 books and one more on the way! Man I'm old! I remember when there was just three books in the series!
I love it when they laugh and say they love Rowley. I hope they do watch the other movies. I want to see their reaction to the second movie where Rowley is jumping on Greg’s bed saying “I’m a little birdie!”😂
If Nostalgia Critic Wants To Do A Third & Final Sequel Month, Called "Sequel Month: The Trilogy", I Have 4 Recommended Sequels & Trilogies. ~ American Tail 3 ~ Trolls World Tour ~ Inspector Gadget 2 ~ Spy Kids 4
I love these FV videos. I wish you guys would do one for every NC episode. P.S. - I was hoping you would have done the NC episode of the rebooted version of DOAWK that came out in 2017. That one was a major POS and Double Toasted did a hilarious review of it.
I have to say, I'm surprised he didn't like Rodrick. In his Home Alone 2 review, he praised Kevin's older brother Buzz for learning how to manipulate and talk his way out of things. I feel that Rodrick is basically an evolved version of that character type. But then again, this is the first film and not Rodrick Rules so maybe his opinion will change once he watches the sequel.
The Diary of a Wimpy Kid movies are disasters but the dude playing Rodrik makes all the pain worth it 😂 You've started something, Doug, you know you'll have to do the other films lmao
No, no, no… Rodrick Rules and Dog Days are NOT disasters ( Long Haul yes and the first one isn’t great) but RR and DD are great, good jokes, good stories and they’re overall just better movies, NOT masterpieces, but good films
The problem I have with this version of Greg is that I don't think they made him mean enough to make him delightfully hate-able or nice enough to sympathize with. He's kind of just squished in between. In some scenes he'll do or say something truly terrible but in some others he seems to show genuine remorse or pain for what he's done. If you want this character done right or better, watch Rodrick Rules or parts of Dog Days. I think the writers kind of learned their lesson with this movie.
You guys should actually watch the sequel. Everything that worked about this film is present in the next one tenfold. As well as ditching all the other stuff that didn’t work. I’m going out on a limb here, but I think it’s cause the director was switched for the second movie.
I have literally never heard anyone reference the Bartimaeus trilogy (I know it's a sequence now) and I'm so happy. Also is child on the potty a good drinking game or does that make it worse?
Ok, so in the books, the appeal was meant to be that this was a children’s book where the main character was an irredeemably awful sociopath. His narcissistic delusions where he assumes everything will go right for him constantly backfire, leaving him right where he started or more miserable by the end of most of the books. Not just Greg, but also the rest of his family are terrible people in different ways. This gives it the vibe of something like “Always Sunny in Philadelphia” or “The Inbetweeners” but for children. The films differ from this in that they actually try to have him and his family improve as people throughout the trilogy which makes them more satisfying movies but the endless cynicism of the books is something I find a lot more interesting and I feel like they could theoretically keep publishing them forever.
Greg's chemistry with Rowley is a lot like Bart and Milhouse come to think of it. Bart doesn't respect Milhouse and treat him whatever he wants towards him despite that's not how you're supposed to treat a friend. Yet Bart and Milhouse keep remaining together as "best friends". That exactly applies with Greg and Rowley. Also, Greg isn't any better in the books compared to this movie. He's designed to be this way. Jeff Kenny confirmed that Greg isn't a kid you're supposed to look up to. I argue Greg is quite worse in the books in a technical level because he's not shown to learn to improve himself in the end of each book. In the films, it's shown in the end Greg learns something to improve himself
I don't really know if Doug and Rob were qualified to review this since they didn't have any connection with the book beforehand. For someone who read the book first, this film does a phenomenal job.
I read the series growing up and I absolutely loved it. It's actually pretty smart for what it is and was super funny as a kid. When this movie came out my dad and I (I was 12 at the time) went to the theater and we were both so upset with it that we walked out halfway through.
For a short Twitch stream (which I'm not on), you should totally play The Jungle Book, either the SNES or Sega. I guarantee you will need to make extensive use of rewind for the King Louie levels and the Shere Khan boss fight.
I think you guys should read some of the books just to get to know the series better. They are one of my favorite movie adaptations. But the 4th movie is the one we definitely don't talk about.
So...how is this kid "wimpy"? He's not spending the whole day hiding from bullies, getting stuffed in a locker or a toilet. He's not constantly allergic to everything, getting winded from walking down the hall. He hasn't even chickened out on anything. Instead, he's an egocentric, manipulative, constantly scheming social climber who thinks he's Truman and that everyone else is an extra in his life.
You guys don't get it. In the books it a series of random events that are loosely connected. It is to simulate a kid writing in his diary. The movie take these random events and make a 3 act structure.
I watched this before the actual review and I realized that I'd never seen the full movie, only the first 30 minutes or so. I'm very happy, this 10 minutes is all I feel I need.

Hi! Been a fan of your guys for years now and like how you've gone from just doing movies you hate to movies you can tolerate and even movies you really love. I'd love to see you guys do the Lethal Weapon movies as part of a month thing and the Dark Crystal.
I was literally just thinking about how miss First Viewing videos. I hope you bring them back more regularly!
Robert Capron, the guy who plays Rowley was in a couple episodes of The Haunting Hour. One in particular I suggest watching is "Catching Cold", it's creepy and well acted, and has a surprise guest that you will appreciate.
The whole movie is PERHAPS the most accurate adaptation of a book series.
I think the point you guys are missing is that he’s not meant to be likable you’re meant to hate him but later on in the trilogy and at the end here he grows as a person
Woo! I love First Viewing. The raw reactions give so much insight to the jokes that go into the reviews.
The fact that this movie is showing several kids on toilets very often makes me think of this:
“That’s a weirdly specific fetish and I’m worried about you.”
Is he in high school yet? I stopped after cabin fever because it never progressed
Just wait til Doug and Rob watch "The Long Haul." A complete recast and tonal shift. With his favorite Batgirl and "Not My Roderick."
You mean the long haul?
@@dastvan8002 yes. Fixed it.
~ American Tail 3
~ Trolls World Tour
~ Inspector Gadget 2
~ Spy Kids 4
Always more fun to watch when you know the wimp is a real life killer 😅
Buzz Alone would be fun to see.
Glad you’re making these again :)
The Diary of a Wimpy Kid movies are disasters but the dude playing Rodrik makes all the pain worth it 😂 You've started something, Doug, you know you'll have to do the other films lmao
I like the first movie
@@paulienuti8031 The first movie is pretty good
@@chasehedges6775 The original trilogy is good
No, no, no… Rodrick Rules and Dog Days are NOT disasters ( Long Haul yes and the first one isn’t great) but RR and DD are great, good jokes, good stories and they’re overall just better movies, NOT masterpieces, but good films
@@herculesknight1372 The first one is good too
Yessss I love first viewings / sibling rivalry!!! I could listen to these guys talk about film for hours
The amount of 4th and 5th grade nostalgia flooding back to me is pain 🤣😖
For book adaptions, diary of a wimpy kid movies (minus long haul) go hard
Gosh, I've missed these First Viewings. Please do more!!!!!
Love the phone alert out of nowhere. I thought that was mine for a second.
I can't wait for you two to see Sea of Monsters
So happy these are back. I miss rob being on camera
Doug: this movie will be bad
Fourth movie: hey
You guys should actually watch the sequel. Everything that worked about this film is present in the next one tenfold. As well as ditching all the other stuff that didn’t work. I’m going out on a limb here, but I think it’s cause the director was switched for the second movie.
More First Viewings please!! I love these.
Thank you so much for bringing back First Viewing! Love that original, first hand reactions
I have literally never heard anyone reference the Bartimaeus trilogy (I know it's a sequence now) and I'm so happy.
Also is child on the potty a good drinking game or does that make it worse?
Dude that Happy World Land shirt is such a great Tiny Toons reference. Love it.
The fat kid actor is named Robert Capron is known for starring as Mason in the drama series Elementary, and as David Lewan in the film The Polka King.
Finally, a new First Viewing! It's been 84 years.
You want a movie about the funny chubby kid with the annoying best friend?
Tommy Boy is right there
Love hearing that Rob is a fellow Bartimaeus fan!
I honestly think this movie is fine and funny, but Roderick Rules is the best film in the series. You guys need to do a First Viewing for it!
This movie wasnt greatly done, but it is easily one of if not the greatest casted book to movie adaptations ever
I liked the book series as a kid. It’s for later elementary/middle school ages. And I remember the 2nd film being not half bad.
I was legit giddy when I saw a new FIRST VEIWING!!!! I honestly thought they didn't do this series anymore, can't wait for the next one!
So happy to see this. I watch First Viewings and other vids aside from NC, which I enjoy a lot don't get me wrong but I watch these on repeat.
7:57 - 8:34 So amazing 😂😂
Yes, I love these videos with Rob!
The best part of this movie was they had no business making Rodrick that hot for no reason.
Here's hoping you watch the sequels, as Rodrick Rules is SOOO much better than the first movie.
I read the series growing up and I absolutely loved it. It's actually pretty smart for what it is and was super funny as a kid. When this movie came out my dad and I (I was 12 at the time) went to the theater and we were both so upset with it that we walked out halfway through.
These have become my fav vids to watch seeing them react to these vids are hilarious 🤣
Critic deserves the cheese touch for his review
Finally! A First Viewing! Please do more of these!
Watching these with my son I noticed wayyy too many scenes of kids in their underwear or half dressed. Whoever wrote these movies is sick af
For a short Twitch stream (which I'm not on), you should totally play The Jungle Book, either the SNES or Sega. I guarantee you will need to make extensive use of rewind for the King Louie levels and the Shere Khan boss fight.
1:18 - life goals, right there, folks
I think you guys should read some of the books just to get to know the series better. They are one of my favorite movie adaptations. But the 4th movie is the one we definitely don't talk about.
It's especially funny how movie Greg is a MUCH better person than his book counterpart!
Rowley is so pure he became best friends with his bully.
