The thing is, it's heavily implied that Franklin isn't actually going to be eaten, but is being paranoid and is imagining it all (especially in the gamecube version). Villagers will mention "a suspicious crazy guy" hiding in whatever acre he's hiding in.. so they don't seem to expect Franklin to be the main dish. If Franklin was really supposed to be eaten, it's only Tortimer who planned this: but I think it's more likely that this was either a prank by Tortimer, a misunderstanding by Franklin, or just Franklin straight up imagining things. Whatever the case, this whole event is still pretty dark lmao, and i think that the ambiguity of the situation adds to its comedy and edginess.
Heck, I've never even played this game and it seems more like a misunderstanding to me than anything! Yeah, it reeks of misunderstanding and paranoia. How this guy could actually think it was anything but, I don't even know.
Cuase Nintendo is known to put some dark things in wholesome games. With the most famous example being pokemon.but there is also dark stuff in Mario and splatoon. For example all the blocks you break in Mario are cursed toads.that means every time you break a block you are murdering one of the residents of the mushroom kingdom.

StuffZ I think you’re making things up yourself when you call it a “justification”. Some people just like telling stories, and putting a dark “twist” on things doesn’t mean they _actually_ believe it as canon. He’s only making an interpretation that I’m sure many of us have, anyway. It’s not that deep bro
Animal Crossing was originally a game meant to tackle dark topics. (Depression/Loneliness/etc) In fact that's the whole reason the game exists in the first place. I feel it needs those dark sides of things. Yeah they toned things down because parents complained for their children's sake's but this game was meant to tackle those dark things. It was meant to teach you sometimes you run into rough or weird situations. It taught that the real world isn't sunshine and roses, but that you should still look for the beauty in things. Without the darkness the light wouldn't be as bright.
In Happy Home Designer, there is a cow who wants a dairy farm, a bull who wants a milk factory, and a horse who wants a stable/race track. Not sure if those are really dark, but still fits the quirkiness of the series. I do miss grumpy villagers being rude af tho, and some of them just saying off the wall stuff. Like in Wild World, Bob once told me he likes to sneak into my room to watch me sleep.
I hope they do something like that in new horizons based on our age. Like a light for kids and a slightly darker for teens and adults version! That would be great!
Hopefully I’m not duplicating a comment, but Angus the cow is also somewhat unsettling. Not to mention their standard flame shirt, probably a reference to cooking a steak or hamburger on a grill...
I miss that darker version. It was my favorite holiday. I actually retold the event at my true crime friendsgiving last year and it was a hit! But I also really get why that was changed.
Well "Zucker", an octopus villager is a finished boiled Takoyaki. Even his tentacles are red from beeing cooked XD sooooo its japanese just in general who have this very obvious and sometimes shocking humor but i think its good. no one should be bedded in cottonballs not knowing where your dino-nuggets come from. Also kids dont worry about those things. only adults do. Kids tend to just shrug stuff up they dont fully understand.
Agree. Nintendo loves sneaking dark things into its games, knowing that nothing bad will actually happen because kids, with their innocent minds, don't understand a lot of things and would not go into detail when it comes to learning. It's just that the parents are too stressed out and kept complaining to Nintendo. Like, I wasn't even aware of how dark some Nintendo franchises are before I became a teen. I'm now 18 and loves dark aspects in Nintendo games, especially Splatoon (which shares the same development team as Animal Crossing).
I definitely prefer darker Animal Crossing. I doubt Nintendo will go back to that, but they could at least make the villagers rude again. Especially the cranky villagers. The whole reason I fell in love with that character type was because you had to earn their friendship, and honestly if I had a friend like that in real life I'd feel safe and I know he'd never let me down. But in New Leaf, the crankies are cheerful as the rest of them, and while I still like them, they're definitely less interesting. And don't get me started on what Pocket Camp did to them. They just became a stereotypical old man who uses ridiculously outdated terms and complains about "kids these days". Sure the cranky villagers have said things like that in the past, but in Pocket Camp, it's their only personality trait. I've been avoiding info about New Horizons so I can play the game with as many surprises possible, and I'm hoping so much that the personalities are fixed, at least similar to how they are in Wild World, if not how they are in the Gamecube version...
The reason villagers were especially rude in the original was because it was an exterior, large-scale localization- The more recent games are more exact translations, and the original localization team basically rewrote the game for the more out-there lines lmao. That's why the original game was actually rereleased in Japan as a localization of a localization-
I’d like to see animal crossing integrate more realistic negative things into the game such as like maybe a burglar, where every once in a while, if you have a police station, they will be out on patrol and be warning villagers of the potential threat, and if you help then find the burglar (someone that doesn’t live in your town that is maybe disguised or something) then an item won’t go missing, but if you do not then an item will go missing? Or perhaps like a storm comes through and maybe there is some storm damage/debris you need to clean up, or fallen trees creating logs, or maybe your character could actually get sick or have something happen, similar to the bee sting or tripping. I feel like that could make the game more realistic to real life. Just a thought.
I don't think burglars would be a good addition bc the game is meant to be something a bit more relaxing, not something to stress over tbh The other ideas sound great tho
I agree, although kind of off topic, I really wish we could have had both police dogs in new Leaf. I mean, they swap characters in the post office in the morning and evening, couldn't they have done that with the police too? I would like a bit more interaction with them, regardless.
I mean... I think two of those ideas would just, ruin the game a little. If your character was sick, it'd imply that you just *shouldnt play* for that time so your character can rest, which is like the worst game design I can imagine. A burglar stealing items wouldn't be seen as cool by most people but probably an annoyance/really annoying thing, where something they care about a lot just gets taken because they didn't play one day or something. Storm debris might be kind of interesting, but it also would basically just be busywork.
Wholesome is good, but a bit of dark humor hasn't bothered me. It's actually quite funny, and I didn't even know about this, and other things. This even is literally reminds me of the Swedish Chef in the muppets christmas TV thing where he looks to cook a turkey muppet who convinced him to try to cook Big Bird instead. What’s with cute franchises and having very dark turkey holidays
I don't mind "toned down" changes as long as they keep it interesting. It really was dark in its original incarnation, but was obviously played off for laughs, so it doesn't hurt the game's image. I always thought it was funny.
I personally really like some darker humour and quick flashes of grimness in AC, but I do agree that maaaybe a villager getting eaten and animals calling you mental is a bit much.. I think it's better when it's subtle anyways! :3
I enjoy the darkness that E rated Nintendo games can go at times, Animal Crossing included, but... Maybe the Harvest Festival used to go a tad too far? Population Growing halloween, along with Whisp's relationship with Jack, is probably the right level for the game.
Who else is digging that pathway? It's so simple. I love it. And... well... the transition of events from City Folk to New Leaf, I like/hate it. I do miss the dark comedy of rescuing Franklin from being the main course. But the New Leaf task felt a little more involved, but boring. I dunno... I guess it was nice that Franklin moved up in the world and became a chef.
This is so funny because I've been playing ACCF recently, and I went to the city and ran into Elmer for the first time (today), and I was like, woah, you're name is Elmer. That's pretty dark. I wonder who named him that. I'm betting it was Bill XD
I remember when I was little and first got this event I didn’t give him any forks and actually pushed him all the way to tortimer so he would congratulate me Nothing happy so I was really disappointed I didn’t care that he was another villager I WANTED TURKEY
Speaking of Pate, she is definitely one of my favourites. She was in my very first town in my very first game which was wild world. I also thought she was a boy for five years
Now I must say this. You have to remember: animal Crossing is and always has been a kids game. Them toning down the scary or upsetting stuff is in the favor of the children.
It's actually been a family game more then just a kids game. Also it's for parnets not kids.cuase some of the dark stuff does teach important lessons like life sometimes isn't fair but you can make the best of things.
star and fox yeah but like eating a fucking villager in your town for thanksgiving is pretty fuckin dark and 6 year old me wouldn't be able to handle that
I remember being 11 and trying to push my villagers to where Franklin was hiding so we could eat him. I got so upset when they got pissy at me for pushing them about.
Hope you don't take this the wrong way dude, but I've been using your videos sometimes to fall asleep to. I love AC, so I enjoy your content while we all wait for the new title to come out, but I occasionally come to this channel when I'm ready for bed cause your voice and the quiet music in the background are so chill it helps me drift off quickly.
You know how in the museum in Mew Horizons, it shows the evolutions that led to various animal species in the game? I like to believe that not all animals evolved to be anthropomorphic and some are like animals in our world. That way it wouldn't be as messed up for... an animal to eat an animal in animal crossing? That would also explain the existence of turtle characters and catchable turtles, squid villagers and catchable squids, etc
I love all the events. I only wish we could get different items every year, just like in Pocket Camp. Actually there are many items in Pocket Camp I really wish to see in New Horizons.
I started playing Animal Crossing because of the wholesome aspect of the game, but having a dark side to the game, even at a very small extent, may make the characters seem more "real."
Animal Crossing for the Game Cube was always one of my favorite games, not only because of the villagers being animals, but because I found it interesting and funny that they were so mean. The image of a cute talking animal telling me to go jump off a cliff is funny to me. :) I would also just use Ressetti as a weapon for whenever I would get mad at my friends. I wouldn't mind little animated shorts based on the older games.
I liked the games being a little darker than they are now, but tbh, I think the implication everyone being totally willing and ready to straight up eat another sentient being just crosses a line.
Video: pate’s name probably derives from pâté, a meat spread usually formed from the the liver of a duck or goose. Captions: Pete’s name probably derives from pate and meat spreader usually formed from a liver of duck goose
I haven't played Animal Crossing since City Folk before I went into New Leaf so I see Animal Crossing as kinda like a really happy Disney fun land and I really enjoy it like that. But I also feel like I should be hated on and attacked if I end up being a jerk so I feel like at least the animals should be back to having bad attitudes if you are bad towards them like back then.
There's also that bull villager called Rodeo, whose name is based off of that sport called "Rodeo". I've read many stuff how people would animal abuse their bulls at that sport, and is not healthy at all for the poor animals.
I like the darkness but I am so glad that Franklin doesn’t have to worry about being killed anymore. The only reason they were going to kill him becomes Tortimer wanted turkey for dinner. The rudeness in older games didn’t seem unique at all. If it was more from snooty or cranky villagers then it would be fine but it was from everyone! They would throw tantrums if you didn’t give them what ever they wanted and would legit pickpocket you if you’re not careful. The pickpocketing makes sense considering it is something that goes on in real life. But the villagers really didn’t have any respect towards anyone and thought everything you had belonged to them. It made the game feel more static to me because there was no clear difference between personality types. (I will admit though watching one of the normal villagers try to be mean is adorable xD)
Pate is called Daune in German, which are the feather you put into jackets. She has always been my fav bc she seemed so sad and I wanted to make her happy and then she started to make me happy when I cam into puberty xD we moved a lot when I was younger but she was a stable in my life :D also her birthday is 1 week after mine and every year since almsot 15 years I celebrate a birtgday week for me and Daune xD
If the protagonist in the past games is the same as the protagonist in New Leaf (now in a different town), the mayor is now someone who had helped Franklin, so that could explain why he’s the chef instead of the main course.
aparently there's a real-life event called "harvest festival" and i believe it's around a similar time to thanksgiving, so maybe that's where the name came from
I was so terrified of Resetti as a kid. I literally had nightmares about him lol, I think the darker aspects of animal crossing were quirky and cool but for the kids who play the game, I totally get why they toned it down ;_;
I agree that AC might be getting too toned down (Bring back mean villagers!), but I think villagers eating each other was a bit much and out of place in AC, and I'm overall glad they revamped the Harvest Festival.
i played on the day of this event in new leaf and i was terrified when cole asked me to catch a fish for him to eat in his meal. why is a rabbit eating fish. WHY IS A RABBIT EATING FISH!?
Obviously I can't speak from experience because I've never played any of the AC games, but I must say that the fans seemed to enjoy the edginess of the earlier games. Some NPCs had interesting backstories, Kapp'n would flirt with you if you were female (I think he asks the player if she'll sail away with him to an island in City Folk). Now with New Horizons, the focus has shifted from villager dynamics to player aesthetics. Everybody is so nice and friendly. Perhaps a little too nice and friendly. Even the sweetest dishes need a little spice sometimes.
Technically it isn't cannibalism since animals eat other animals all the time
Yes, it would have to be him being eaten by other turkeys.
vultures eat chicks theyre both birds
humans eat cows
we’re both mammals
Blue No, it's like if we ate Chimpanzees. It's only cannibalism if it's of the same animals, like a Chimpanzee eating a Chimpanzee.

Thank you for posting good animal crossing content
I personally really like some darker humour and quick flashes of grimness in AC, but I do agree that maaaybe a villager getting eaten and animals calling you mental is a bit much.. I think it's better when it's subtle anyways! :3
I never seen that Thankgiving event, maybe because I didn't play it on that day
I enjoy the darkness that E rated Nintendo games can go at times, Animal Crossing included, but...
I remember when I was little and first got this event
I didn’t give him any forks and actually pushed him all the way to tortimer so he would congratulate me
Nothing happy so I was really disappointed
I didn’t care that he was another villager
I WANTED TURKEY
Oh man, young me happily handed out those forks and knives despite knowing a turkey was going to be eaten
Also it's for parnets not kids.cuase some of the dark stuff does teach important lessons like life sometimes isn't fair but you can make the best of things.
star and fox yeah but like eating a fucking villager in your town for thanksgiving is pretty fuckin dark and 6 year old me wouldn't be able to handle that
No.
bruh moment would six year old you get it?
I remember being 11 and trying to push my villagers to where Franklin was hiding so we could eat him. I got so upset when they got pissy at me for pushing them about.
Omfg when I was a kid I literally didn’t catch on to this tf? 😂
Stop🙏using🙏God's🙏name🙏in🙏vain🙏
Zucker's design is based on takoyaki, a Japanese octopus dish. Notice how his hair is some sauce while his hairpin is a toothpick?
Dark Nintendo, please give me dark animal crossing. I want a spooky goth town!
I want that turkey's hat.
Poor Franklin! That's barbaric. I would like the villagers to have a bit more sass.
I miss when my villagers would call me ugly lmaooo
Im fine with it being dark, but I definitely do NOT miss villagers randomly insulting you
Hope you don't take this the wrong way dude, but I've been using your videos sometimes to fall asleep to.
I like your theory but you accidentally wrote "mew horizons" and for some reason I find that hilarious.
Why don't I remember this?? I was 9 when Wild World came out and the villagers were so savage back then. Loved the sarcasm and dark humour.
I love all the events. I only wish we could get different items every year, just like in Pocket Camp. Actually there are many items in Pocket Camp I really wish to see in New Horizons.
Well, it’s basically...
*THE CIRCLE OF LIFE*
I started playing Animal Crossing because of the wholesome aspect of the game, but having a dark side to the game, even at a very small extent, may make the characters seem more "real."
I'd like to see it be a bit darker. Otherwise, poor Blanca is the only one, and I think she's lonely enough. Or crazy enough. Dealer's choice.
Reminds me about Marshall needing a cowhide rug in Pocket Camp to be invited to your campsite.
I’d prefer it to be more wholesome, but have a few dark events every once in a while
Resetti made me cry as a kid lol. I was so relieved when I got New Leaf and he wasn’t yelling at me anymore.
Don't forget Patty! I don't think I should have to spell out her name for anyone
I could see someone writing a creepy pasta about this...
*franklin lookin like a snacc*
There's a cow villager called patty, named after another name to burger-
h e l p kinda
The patty is the actual meat
The proper way to say it would be burger patty
The burger itself is the entire dish not the patty alone lol
I liked the games being a little darker than they are now, but tbh, I think the implication everyone being totally willing and ready to straight up eat another sentient being just crosses a line.
Tortimer was the one who wanted to eat the turkey and thats why hes the chef in new leaf where Tortimer isn’t in charge.
3:26 and we can’t forget patty the cow!
1:38 i refuse to believe that my precious baby freckles would do such a thing as eat a villager
Video: pate’s name probably derives from pâté, a meat spread usually formed from the the liver of a duck or goose.
Captions: Pete’s name probably derives from pate and meat spreader usually formed from a liver of duck goose
I loved the dark humor. It was really tongue and cheeky, Aloha
New Horizons: Here we call it *Turkey Day*
Oh my gosh I am SO glad I have new leaf otherwise he would have been eaten since I forgot to play that day
I haven't played Animal Crossing since City Folk before I went into New Leaf so I see Animal Crossing as kinda like a really happy Disney fun land and I really enjoy it like that. But I also feel like I should be hated on and attacked if I end up being a jerk so I feel like at least the animals should be back to having bad attitudes if you are bad towards them like back then.
So one of my current villagers is a pig named "Pancetti". Yes, like the bacon.
Did he get his name because, Benjamin Franklin made a statement that he thought the Turkey should be our national bord instead of the Eagle?
The fact that this was reccomended to me on Thanksgiving though lol
Me toooo
It would only be cannibalism if all the other villagers were turkeys
it's just weird that tortimer would eat franklin, i'm glad that they changed it for him to be the chief for new leaf.
aparently there's a real-life event called "harvest festival" and i believe it's around a similar time to thanksgiving, so maybe that's where the name came from
I still see a roast turkey as a craftable object in Pocket Camp 😓
Although it might be soy turkey, because it's made out of generic preserved food
I was so terrified of Resetti as a kid. I literally had nightmares about him lol, I think the darker aspects of animal crossing were quirky and cool but for the kids who play the game, I totally get why they toned it down ;_;
We need more of this humor. No way would they actually eat him
I agree that AC might be getting too toned down (Bring back mean villagers!), but I think villagers eating each other was a bit much and out of place in AC, and I'm overall glad they revamped the Harvest Festival.
Bruh, there are no mean villagers in New Leaf ? Hard to believe, I always get roasted by these guys in letters.
The only tone down I like is the removal of Resetti, but he dragged up childhood trauma for me so idk if that counts
Cherry’s coloring looks like the monster from insidues
There's also that octopus character who is designed to look like a food made of octopus
Zucker, his Japanese name and his design are based off takoyaki which are fried dough balls filled with chopped octopus
I’ve never played animal crossing GameCube, and don’t do thanksgiving here, what happens if you give the villagers the knives and forks
i played on the day of this event in new leaf and i was terrified when cole asked me to catch a fish for him to eat in his meal.
why is a rabbit eating fish.
WHY IS A RABBIT EATING FISH!?
Video: tortimer
Captions: torture merrrr
Technically it’s not cannibalism unless another turkey/bird ate Franklin.
Good grief, someone ought to send Gouhin to AC on Thanksgiving
To be honest if I was a young kid playing animal crossing and the mayor wanted to eat another animal that would’ve spooked me a bit.
Today he’s in the van for me, I actually didn’t know about this.
I had Pate in Let’s Go to the City when I was about six, and I was horrified when my mum told me what his name meant
I like dark stuff in animal crossing bc it's mostly a cute game, it gives it character
Didn't the villagers say just kill me sometimes when they fell in a pitfall in the first one too?
Oh, so you bring up Pate and Elmer but not Zucker...he's literally food
What about the food themed villagers like Zucker, Merengue, Chadder, Pate, Tangy, Frita, Ketchup, Tia (kind of), and Apple
Lololol pate is my GIRL! Still hilarious though!😂
i wish the game was still like it was. where it could be dark and they were mean sometimes. i also want resetti to get his old job back.
