i always hated big servers, anything with more than 10 active members usually ends up either falling into depravity and banning everyone who isn't 100% on board with it or being so strict about that stuff that you can't even joke about it, i am glad i found my little pockets of people i enjoy talking to
Once server reach like 200 members, one member doesn't matter anymore. Go only for big servers if it's centralized about one thing that you need help with and even then remember that even if you invest few years, they won't hesitate to replace you with a new user
This. If the server you spend most of your time one has over 100 members (for old servers, most inactive) or like 20 (for brand new ones) you're doing something wrong.
As someone that was used to moderate one of the biggest rp server on gmod in its category, gotta say, its really spot on on everything. You would be surprised by the amount of smart ass and scheming going on in the background sometimes. You do not realise how unprepared you are until your staff form faction that want to destroy each other.
@@maxfish2018 I think that depend on the gamemod, but its like any roleplaying media, in the manga rp scene the player are quite young. (im not that old either, still a young adult)
Running a server of 77k members. Been at it since 2016. Took a while to kick off but the goal was to be useful to the community rather than just getting the number up. Also while i agree not every server needs a custom bot, if you have the skills for it, or want to learn programming. Making a bot can reduce the need for gimmick bots that have 50 features but you need only one of them. Simply approach it with "ok, how do i copy this idea in my own way" and boom you have made a great experience in your server with also learning something new. Also after years of running the server, there have been many days where the mouse cursor just hovers over the "delete server" button.
I deal with two large servers (one of them being 80K members) and something I've learned over time about rules, is that you NEED to use contexts of how people are, even if it seems unfair, you need to deal with people who you know are breaking rules out of sheer will. I tend to give extra chances to people who make mistakes due to lack of knowledge or who understand they've made a mistake, but those who like to “play” with the rules are always punished much more severely, this has already caused moments where someone broke a rule in order to have just one more “warn for the collection” directly to a ban, even if the rule was something small, the reason was obvious, and it wasn't something we wanted on a server. Deal with people as people, see how they behave or what they are looking for in the community, to chat or to be problematic.
My server peaked at 430k members. We've rested now after years at 180k. My happiest time was before the server passed 60k. You don't want to own a large server. It changes you for good.
Couldn’t agree more, the end goal is always “I want the biggest project I can make” and then when you reach that goal… you notice that it was much more fun building it than dealing with all the hassle of it being large 😢
I have a server with a little under 100 people, about 10 of which are consistently active, and another 10 occasionally. Im happy with that. I like that. I don't wanna be any bigger.
Exact situation, amen to that. I don't prune the other 80 because of my hope of them returning from whence they came one day. One day... One day, they will appear from the shadows and tell that they've finished with their degree, got married, had kids etc., idk that would be cool and random
I like having active servers, the only thing is usually all my friends prefer dms so all of my attempts at servers ended up becoming a dry wasteland. idw a big server, I js want an active, fun one, even with only 5 ppl who are active
The point about picking good people to mod is so real. In the club server I'm a mod for, it's pretty small, everyone follows the rules, so I don’t really have much to do, but I really like it. On the other hand, I'm also in a friend's server, and one of their mods repeatedly broke the rules and was harassing me for literally no reason. I'm pretty sure that person is still a mod, even though the server owner was there and agreed with me that it was harassment.

And the issues within the staff team can be too much to bear at times. Most of the time, I moderate people based on their track record and the way they interact with other members. I'm lenient in certain stuff which I know is a bad thing because some members look at it in a bad light.

For the staff security system, one thing that should be critically mentioned is *do not give your staff permissions they really don't need*. I made my own discord bot which helps with 90% of the things. I'm currently working on a system that will be able to detect photos, gifs and videos and scan them frame by frame to find if something is inappropriate so I won't have to deal with too much
I've been a moderator for a mid-sized streamer for about 8 years, the discord server is sitting steady at 3.4k members and has been in that ballpark for a long while. Everything you said at the end about not wanting a BIG server is so true.
weird side note, if you still haven't been able to play Deadlock, I'm more than happy to try to invite you so you can play (if it requires adding each other on steam, i'm honestly fully expecting an immediate unadd; I just want to share the game :3) regardless, great video as always ^^
I'm not trying to make a discord server cause i already have one, but i'm watching this because i love how you talk and your really funny to me, honestly i'd watch all your videos if i had time, but i have school, and work.. which is way more important then watching videos, but i really hope you enjoy doing this, cause i don't want you to stop.. i support you all the way, and i will like all your videos i watch so far!
Once I had a sketchy member fill out a mod app for my server, and since all they can do with trial mod is timeout members, I gave him the role. A couple weeks ago by and he did turn out to be a good moderator. He was super nice to people and did his job. And right before I was gonna promote him to mod, I got not 1, not 2, but 7 dms from admins and mods sending screenshots of this trial mod saying slurs and other bad stuff to my moderators and admins because thsy didn't agree to moderate HIS server. I banned him shortly later. People, please make sure your mods are good candidates outside of your server. The stuff they do outside of your server can make or break whether they are good mods
Ngl in my server with my friends, when we were all new to running a personal server, we set mee6 up wrong and it notified in our vent channel. honestly my favorite part of that era is me crying in the vent channel, then having mee6 say i leveled up. It always cheered me and my friends up
This is entirely true. Used to be a community manager (top dog, damn near co owner) of the Toolbox Server (a Minecraft client mod for bedrock edition, used to be the biggest). It had 75k people and it was hectic. It changes you. I don't work there anymore cause the owner went crazy, but I do miss it and I do recommend people try making a community, it can change you for the better!
I would love to hear more context to that, what do u mean the owner went crazy? It's alright if u don't want to speak abt it, I am just curious now lmao

if I ever make it big in the future w my friends, ik we'll all be co-owners of a discord server that may grow big, who knows. ig we'll see if we're lucky lol
I have this one friend who had an active server focused on some discord's bot game. But once he had to leave to focus on own life and the game itself became less fun too. Now 4 years later. My friend is trying to become again a successful server owner. He made a new server, invited me to it. And no matter how much I try to tell to him that "no worries, you already had the experience of it, appreciate what happened, your previous server was and is very successful - it would stay in everyones hearts and fun memories". He just wont agree with it. And that is sad. It like really hit on his ego or something. But like with any generic chatting anime server - they really have their shine moment and then all of people grow up, focus on career and life... and eventually it is less active 🤷♀️ I don't see a lot of the point on recreating "successful" servers, unless idk... it's your business or sth.
i agree on this, having a large server anything above 3-5k i think it's massive headache i want my server to be big but not that large just want ppl having fun and watch them talk in vc and play and stream to have fun not have boring Ikea HQ and everyone act like npcs
I used to own a server with ~2000 members. I'd say its the perfect amount since you still have control over everything and the chats aren't flooded 24/7.
as a co-owner of a server with less than 100 members, 10% barely being active, the only thing im stressing about is when it does grow into a bigger server. ive already done so much to pre-plan for the future and now i gotta do more to prevent further problems from occurring
I wish I had saved more stuff from a particular server I was part of before it got poofed by discord... Looking at the controversy and such in other servers it amazes me how well things went and how many issues we never had. The entire staff team was excellent and so was the community.
3:35 I did this a while ago and i had a member of staff tell me to remove it from my bio as it was considered "advertising" which is wild because Discord lets you have external connections in your profile like twitter and youtube, so be careful doing this one as some servers don't like it which i find counter-intuitive.
It can seam counter intuitive why some discord servers have that rule. But it does make sense. Used to help moderate a fairly big server on discord and they had that rule because we couldn't check every server that people had. And we had a few people do it to scam people or have hate groups on discord. The scam and hate groups part wasn't very common though but it was one of those situations where a few people ruined it for everyone else.
I sometimes use a linktree! That way, I don't have to type every single one of my links (like carrd, ur discord server, etc) into my bio, and instead have one link that will lead u to ur linktree with all ur links, including ur discord server. I doubt that mods can ask u to remove it now, as it practically isn't advertising as long as u don't click on my linktree
Two things I usually tell people about having / moderating a big server are that, one, get rid of annoying and toxic people. If the vibe if your server is awful, no one will want to chat. Just because it's making numbers, doesn't mean you should ruin the community. I stop counting the amount of people that get shot down (banned) in their first conversation in the server, simply because of their overall negative attitude. They get a free warning, but after that? No bother keeping them if they won't change Second, have a rule that state stuff like "the staff has it final say in a judgement" or "do not attempt to find loopholes in the rules and exploit them", it's either that, or a five page paragraph on why Dolphins are prohibited on the server, in link with Z accident. The funny part of telling people that is, they usually don't apply what I just said, and then I witness their server burning down in what feels like a server wide roleplay of Sothern American countries after the US paid them a visit.
I did learn a few things from you. Thank you for that. Though my initial workaround with roles is... No one has admin. Though there exists an admin role, they are limited, and only I am allowed to mess with bots, as my role workaround is very strict and trust based.
Let me tell you the story when the level 600 school gyatt walked passed me, I was in class drinking my grimace rizz shake from ohio during my rizzonomics class when all of the sudden this crazy ohio bing chilling gyatt got sturdy, past my class. I was watching kai cenat hit the griddy on twitch. This is when I let my rizz take over and I became the rizzard of oz. I screamed, look at this bomboclat gyatt
i have a server with around 40 people in it about an EXTREMELY niche topic within a bigger fandom, and it already seems huge to me. ive been running the place for 3 months now and focusing on "growing" just seems like sabotage to me, its already a lot to moderate (even with volunteers) i could not imagine moderating much more than that lol
Is it bad I wish I had the AutoMod Rules/Words you used on your server? There are times I can't figure that shit out, especially the Regex bits. + There's apparently words I missed. Also, great video! ^^
I have a server that has exactly one user on it: Me. I'm gonna set it up one of these days, get roles and channels and yadda yadda yadda, but I haven't had the spoons to dig into all that stuff. It's gonna be for people who like my writing to hang out, so it'll be small as hell (like, probably 20 people max, if that) but that's cool. My writing's too niche to draw a large audience. Probably dead, too, as most of the people are already gonna be in other servers with each other. But it might be nice to see if any of the "silent lurkers" end up joining, people who've only read stories but never commented or interacted. I fear the day I get a message from my mother asking how to install Discord so she can join, though. >.>
the amount of people flexing their big servers here is insane ._. half of them doesn't even have that much big servers, including you I'm pretty sure and even if you do, it's nothing to flex like ntts said in this video in like 1000000 different ways
a small server i was in, had the same problem. it went from a server with almost no rules and was just a chill server, but now its heavily moderated and i cant even say "dead" anymore 😭
I had to stop owning a server at some point because it was filled with so much drama and i got tired of it so i passed it down to someone else. This is a good video to those idiots that keep asking me about me helping them with their servers
About the leveling system being used as a "moderation tool" not as entertainment, u forgot to say that most bots have random xp range per each message, so if people wanna use it as moderation tool, they should change the xp range to be constant

1:34 I KNEW IT.
weird side note, if you still haven't been able to play Deadlock, I'm more than happy to try to invite you so you can play (if it requires adding each other on steam, i'm honestly fully expecting an immediate unadd; I just want to share the game :3)
regardless, great video as always ^^
Me watching this at 4x speed: "Ah. I see."

I'm not trying to make a discord server cause i already have one, but i'm watching this because i love how you talk and your really funny to me, honestly i'd watch all your videos if i had time, but i have school, and work.. which is way more important then watching videos, but i really hope you enjoy doing this, cause i don't want you to stop.. i support you all the way, and i will like all your videos i watch so far!
bro finally redid his server tutorial
This feels like a “scared straight “ for discord. And honestly good
Chill hangout severs with sub 400 people are literally the only severs i like
993k 100k soon
"my girlfriend chat gpt" so smooth i almost didnt notice
It's alright if u don't want to speak abt it, I am just curious now lmao
bedrock client servers are hell
@@thebestcrayon he started ignoring his team, took many hiatuses, when he came back for the final time he absolutely started going off the deep end, some shit he was saying was making no sense, he would let his moral and religious beliefs go way over anybody else's beliefs. He would manipulate you by trying to play up to your positives but then he would start arguments about things that he would like to call debates, but they really weren't. He was/ is physically abusive to his wife, I'm not sure if he does anything to his son, he has no job, makes no money, yet tries to always pitch this multi-level marketing scheme, even to his closest friends as if it was a good thing. Anybody who needs confirmation on this, we've got screenshots.
if I ever make it big in the future w my friends, ik we'll all be co-owners of a discord server that may grow big, who knows. ig we'll see if we're lucky lol
TLDR; be social, be cool
which is utterly a monumental task for the average discord user
Thankyou for pronouncing it "niche" instead of "Nitch".
ppl pronounce niche as nitch?? 😨
But like with any generic chatting anime server - they really have their shine moment and then all of people grow up, focus on career and life... and eventually it is less active 🤷♀️
I don't see a lot of the point on recreating "successful" servers, unless idk... it's your business or sth.
18:06 Why not 3,141 as the example number?
i agree on this, having a large server anything above 3-5k i think it's massive headache i want my server to be big but not that large just want ppl having fun and watch them talk in vc and play and stream to have fun not have boring Ikea HQ and everyone act like npcs
"Ntts, is late. Go to bed"
-Discord, probably
I used to own a server with ~2000 members. I'd say its the perfect amount since you still have control over everything and the chats aren't flooded 24/7.
Can confirm. I'm being on this nightmare very often
mhm
You know it’s a good day when you see NTTS posting a vid
MAID DRESS OMGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG
love that chicken from popeyeeeeeeee
Finally someone talking good about sapphire 🙏🙏😭😭
NTTS and I were in a room together, and he touched me, and said "welcome to Discord" 😨
Same
That's so hot
as a co-owner of a server with less than 100 members, 10% barely being active, the only thing im stressing about is when it does grow into a bigger server. ive already done so much to pre-plan for the future and now i gotta do more to prevent further problems from occurring
Therapist: NTTS in a maid dress cant hurt you, he’s not real
NTTS: 1:35
6:32, delivery is magically golden
16:10 "amongus fortnite balls" 😭
I wish I had saved more stuff from a particular server I was part of before it got poofed by discord... Looking at the controversy and such in other servers it amazes me how well things went and how many issues we never had. The entire staff team was excellent and so was the community.
I own Rosehaven (shown at 3:01), leave us out of this 💀 we're just trying to play pretend in peace
Meh
thank the lord for NTTS. I feel like this video needs to be seen more (and I get a feeling it will in about a few minutes)
Upload this later, im busy.
no
Lol
Aura
I'm supposed to be asleep rn because of school but I didn't get my meds so yippiii!!!
I doubt that mods can ask u to remove it now, as it practically isn't advertising as long as u don't click on my linktree
tbh if that's the case then, if u have nitro, change server prof. but if not, ig just remove it lol
No bother keeping them if they won't change
Second, have a rule that state stuff like "the staff has it final say in a judgement" or "do not attempt to find loopholes in the rules and exploit them", it's either that, or a five page paragraph on why Dolphins are prohibited on the server, in link with Z accident.
The funny part of telling people that is, they usually don't apply what I just said, and then I witness their server burning down in what feels like a server wide roleplay of Sothern American countries after the US paid them a visit.
How to get a big discord server:
1. Be a RUclipsr
2. Make a popular game
3. Be a RUclipsr
you should def make a whole video with all the custom words, i would love that
1:36 what the hell am I looking at D:
I didn't know you was like that lovin destiny 1 &2
Im staff member in a big Discord Server an I Approve this Message. But we keep the rules general and short so theres Not a lot to argue about.
I did learn a few things from you. Thank you for that.
Though my initial workaround with roles is... No one has admin. Though there exists an admin role, they are limited, and only I am allowed to mess with bots, as my role workaround is very strict and trust based.
Bro is gonna show up in a maid outfit and pretend like me wouldn’t notice
i remember you having only 300k some months ago congrats on reaching almost a mil

I screamed, look at this bomboclat gyatt

i have a server with around 40 people in it about an EXTREMELY niche topic within a bigger fandom, and it already seems huge to me. ive been running the place for 3 months now and focusing on "growing" just seems like sabotage to me, its already a lot to moderate (even with volunteers) i could not imagine moderating much more than that lol
disboard helps A LOT, i got 100 members in less than a month, u have to use specific tags
I didnt think it was possible, he made a video thats not about a bad discord server!
one of the most useful video you ever made
Is it bad I wish I had the AutoMod Rules/Words you used on your server? There are times I can't figure that shit out, especially the Regex bits. + There's apparently words I missed.
Also, great video! ^^
I feel so good to never use any other social media platform other than yt for entertainment
I fear the day I get a message from my mother asking how to install Discord so she can join, though. >.>
to be fr rn, I really wanna join now. I need small niche servs to fit into and make new friends
NTTS in a maid outfit, let's gooo!
I'm an admin on a server with 135k+ members and this video is spot on. Basically every word. So, uh, good job :P
the amount of people flexing their big servers here is insane ._. half of them doesn't even have that much big servers, including you I'm pretty sure
and even if you do, it's nothing to flex like ntts said in this video in like 1000000 different ways
NTTS never fails to make me lose my mind.
a small server i was in, had the same problem. it went from a server with almost no rules and was just a chill server, but now its heavily moderated and i cant even say "dead" anymore 😭
I own a 1,7k server, and this is a good tips
MY GOOFY AHH WAS SUMMONED WHEN I HEARD CROCHET
