That "LOOK AT ME!" scene gives me chills to this day. R.I.P Heath
Yeah his voice completely changes and it’s downright terrifying. I remember in the theaters everyone just went silent right after.
Nolan just gave him a camera and it was Ledger's first scene i believe.
Theater went silent and i just heard some say WOAH
Most people forget what incredible outrage hit the internet when Heath Ledger got the Joker role over Adrian Brodey, Steve Carell and Robin Williams. No one saw this performance coming.
i'm sorry, robin auditioned for this?
Was Robin Williams alive still? Even still that’s crazy. And Steve carrell!? 😂 wtf
@Robbo-mx8nn oh yeah like 6 years before his death, this movie was released.
@@Robbo-mx8nnRobin Williams died in 2014.
Robin Williams as a joker would have been wild 😂
About to witness one of the most memorable and haunting performances ever on screen by Heath Ledger as the Joker.
I was a fan of Heath Ledger, but when I heard he was getting an oscar for this movie, I thought they were only giving it to him because he had passed away in such a tragic way. I hadn't seen the movie, I just based it on his past performances and while I loved him, I didn't think he was Oscar worthy. I told my brother and all he said is "Watch the movie". I tried to say something again and he repeated "Watch the movie".
So I watched the movie. And I ate my words. Heath proved me wrong 10000x over. He was Oscar worthy... good Lord
Oh shiiet, when did you watch the movie? Recently?
18:04
The funny thing is, J was dead right. Gyllenhaal looking off to the side was her looking towards the film crew looking for someone to stop it because Ledger grabbing her like that was improvisation. That wasn't in the script and she was actually scared because she didn't know what he was going to do.
I know Michael Caine had a line but he hadn't seen Heath in costume so he was kinda stunned silent. And if m not mistaken Maggie also hadn't seen Heath in full costume either so it caught her off guard as well.
This film was so great it changed awards. Christopher Nolan and "The Dark Knight" were comically overlooked for awards in the year the film was released in large part because it was an action/comic book movie. "The Dark Knight" being legitimately one of the best films made that year forced the people, who determine the awards, to change the system of how the Best Picture is determined. The change would be later known as "The Dark Knight" rule.
So Joker was right. There's no going back.Batman changed things.
The hype surrounding this movie's release was on another level, and across the globe! Oh man, I'll never forget seeing this movie in theaters. The ending always gives me goosebumps, it's just so epic.
I remember my first viewing of this was on a legit IMAX screen. God damnit that was such a great movie going experience.
Yup, I remember going to see a midnight showing when it came out too. The theater was packed!
@brettcloud8550 I didn't get to see it at imax but I remember driving extra far to go to the brand new premium theater in phoenix for it
Yep, I saw this movie opening weekend on the IMAX screen, packed theater. People applauded as soon as the credits started.
One of the best superhero films ever made. One of the best modern crime films ever made. One of the best American films made in the 21st century.
Every single person involved in this masterpiece fired on ALL cylinders. This is cinema, right here.
Bro everyone in this movie was actin like they was gonna be homeless if this didn’t do good.
Not a superhero
Not really exclusively American
@@alexloomis2398🙄
@@DjDown1984just because the director is British doesn't take away from the fact that this is a film made in Hollywood, funded and produced by an American film company.
I'm guarantee you the semantics aren't necessary lol
I'm pretty sure that Heath Ledger in this role has given me my all time favourite performance by an actor in a movie and I don't say that lightly. God rest his soul and thank you Heath for leaving us with this master class in acting.
Bro's never seen Daniel Day Lewis in There Will Be Blood 💀
Nobody thought Heath Ledger would even come close to nailing Joker like Jack Nicolson did but they all changed their minds once they saw the dark knight movie
Turn your head Is a throwback joke to Michael Keaton who was stiff as a board in his costume
That shit used to be so funny watching his full body turn around and runaway bobbing up and down
Actually, the suit from Batman Begins also was completely stiff, in terms of the cowl. In universe as well as from an acting/film making perspective, being unable to turn his head was a real problem that required a new suit.
fun fact: heath was so in character that maggie was legit scared and was looking at the director to yell cut.
Sean Penn did that to Christopher Walken with a prop gun on At Close Range
Also: Alfred was meant to have lines when he opened the elevator, but he hadn't seen the Joker in full costume yet. His startled surprise was so real they kept it.
RIP, Heath Ledger. He did one hell of an Oscar Winning performance as The Joker.
He got the Oscar because he died. Let's be real. It was a pity award. Jack Nicholson was a wayyyy better Joker and he wasn't even nominated.
@@madgeordierob7890 Shush. just shush it if you just speak vomit and dumbshit.
@@madgeordierob7890 blasphemy.
I've said it before, I'll say it again: The interrogation scene between Batman and the Joker is one of the best movie scenes ever!!!
"Some men just want to watch the world burn" can be applied to a lot of people today
"Do he got on Crocs?"
Yup...white Crocs with black sox...the most horrific footwear combination possible. 😂
No that would be black socks with brown sandals
William Fichtner (the bank manager at the start) has been in a ton of stuff but you recently saw him as the Colonel in Armageddon
" I didn't kill him. Internal bleeding did ! "
The scene between Heath and Maggie at the party, was the first time Maggie had seen Heath in character, her reaction/facial expressions when he approaches and grabs her by the face to tell the second scar story, is completely genunine
Same with Michael Caine. He was supposed to say something when the Joker walks in but was kinda stnned.
So a cup of funny things is when Harvey grabbed the gun in the courtroom he said buy American and then when he became two-faced he started carrying a American-made revolver that didn't Jam and then a bunch of Heath Ledger Improv
FR?
Heath Ledger(Joker) adlibbed the applause, the reaction from Gary Oldman is genuine.
"It's not about money... it's about sending a message."
Fun Fact: Theatrical movie debut of David Dastmalchian.
What's The Emergency Fact: While filming a chase scene on Lake Street, the Chicago Police Department received several calls from concerned citizens stating that the police were involved in a vehicle pursuit with a dark vehicle of unknown make or model.
Epic Cameo Fact: Senator Patrick Leahy (D) of Vermont is the older gentleman that confronts The Joker (Heath Ledger) at the party thrown by Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) for Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart). Senator Leahy is a huge Batman fan and arranged an early showing of the movie for a fundraiser for the children's section of the Kellogg-Hubbard Library in Montpelier, Vermont. He also appeared in Batman Forever (1995), Batman & Robin (1997), The Dark Knight Rises (2012), and as a Batman: The Animated Series (1992) voice.
And Scene Fact: Heath Ledger directed both homemade videos that The Joker sends to GCN. The first video involving the fake Batman (Andy Luther) was done under writer, producer, and director Christopher Nolan's supervision. Nolan thought Ledger had done so well with that sequence, he felt there was no need for him to be there when it came time to film the scene where reporter Mike Engel (Michael Anthony Hall) reads The Joker's statement. He put his trust in Ledger and let him do whatever he wanted, ultimately pleased with the result after he'd seen the outcome.
Becoming The Joker: In preparation for his role as the Joker, Heath Ledger hid away in a motel room for about six weeks. During this extended stay of seclusion, Ledger delved deep into the psychology of the character. He devoted himself to developing the Joker's every tic, namely the voice and that sadistic-sounding laugh (for the voice, Ledger's goal was to create a tone that didn't echo the work Jack Nicholson did in his 1989 performance as the Joker). Ledger's interpretation of the Joker's appearance was primarily based on the chaotic, disheveled look of punk rocker Sid Vicious combined with the psychotic mannerisms of Malcolm McDowell's character, Alex De Large, from A Clockwork Orange (1971). Heath Ledger's sudden death from drug toxicity on January 22, 2008, prompted immediate speculation over this movie's state and Ledger's disposition prior to death. Soon after Ledger's death was announced, Warner Bros. issued a statement that verified that Ledger had finished all of his scenes in principal photography, as well as post-production duties (looping), thus making the Joker his final, completed movie role. Rumors abounded that playing the intense role had taken its toll on Ledger's mental state, causing him to become depressed and take the wrong combination of drugs as a result. However, his family has since put such rumors to rest by stating that far from being depressed, he had a lot of fun playing the role. Ledger did suffer from insomnia throughout his life, and would often take sleeping pills together with other prescription drugs (something his sister had actually warned against the night before his death). Unfortunately, the mix he took that night proved to be a fatal combination.
Yes. Unfortunately he had a mixture of:
Hydrocodone
Oxycodone (aka Percocet)
Xanax
And an unspecified sleeping medication
Present in his system, as stated by the toxicology report.
It breaks my heart that he passed before he could see how much people loved his performance...
You forgot about Tom waits. There's a video clip of an interview Tom waits did back in the seventies and you can see where Heath ledger got some inspiration.
10 page essay = scroll down
"Dead. That's 500"
"How about alive?"
.... a million, Joker. You were there
Fun reaction for sure! Ashleigh Burton really made me laugh at 28:14 after the truck flips and Batman's motorcycle hit the wall and did the 180 turn. She thought Batman had wrecked his bike at first, and said what's next? A bat unicycle?!
I can’t wait to see if J flips out seeing Spawn in this.
The Joker is just pure Chaos in this movie. Absolutely fantastic.
I've had the worst day with my mental health issues, this made me smile!
That's the only positive to that comes outa hitting rock bottom, there's only one way left to go, and that's UP.
Hoping tomorrow is a better, brighter day for you!
Heath Ledger was absolute GENIUS in this role!! It's such a tragedy he's gone. Selfishly, I think of all the great roles we missed from him. Anyway, thanks for this great reaction. I never caught on the joke of them referring to the "MCU" quite frequently in the movie! So funny.
Chris Nolan let Heath direct the "look at ME" scene. Great touch!
Also, the "you remind me of my father" guy has been in every Batman movie (more or less)
Yep. He was also a US Senator representing Vermont up until 2023. His love of Batman is why he's had multiple cameos and even one voice acting gig.
"Some men, just want to watch the world burn" Epic fucking line! No truer words.
When Heath Ledger was first announced as Joker, everybody thought it was a disaster. He was a pretty boy with limited range. Then he turns in this performance.
Glad you caught the Joker pinning the hammer back on the revolver.
"I said what I said"
That shouldn't have it me as hard as it did, but that was hilarious.
28:23 "Where the back of the truck?" 16 years later, this never occurred to me until today.😆
Another thing J picked up on that other people sometimes miss on first watch, is when Joker is in the hospital with Dent and gives him the gun. Joker's finger is on the hammer of the gun the entire time soif Dent tries to pull the trigger, nothing will happen. Joker wins by corrupting Dent and still lives. Good catch.
"The Joker represents the scary truth no one wants to hear"
Probably the smartest thing I've ever heard a reactor say about this movie. I'm not gonna lie, I root for him beginning to end, because he reveals the contradictions and the hypocrisy of everyone else. He doesn't try to tell Batman that he's not crazy. He tells the truth, that they're both crazy. And the shit he did to Rachel, well that was just a public service.
"You thought we could be decent men in an indecent time"
My favorite sequence is with the introduction of the Batcycle. Especially when it goes up the wall and ROTATES AND REVERSES!!! I lost my mind the first time I saw that scene!
One thing keeps this movie from being top tier, the writing that makes Rachel a "She ain't sh*t" character...and that insulting fake ass voice...ok, 2 things..😂
You are one of my top 3 favorite reactors! I always like your videos before I even watch, love you and your pups dude 🥰🤗💕
25:33 they gotta basement! That’s the best way to describe Gotham!! Love it!!
Fun fact: the scene where joker interrupts Bruce waynes party and confronts Rachel was not scripted, so her reaction was genuine.
One of the greatest films ever made not just one of the greatest comic book films but movies in general … and Yes Han Zimmer’s Score gos mega Hard pretty much all his scores are amazing
First time I go to cinema and people applaud at the end. The room was so intense 😂
15:29 I remember going to the midnight premiere for the dark night.. believe me when I say a crowd that had been cheering during certain moments.. you could hear a pin drop during this scene.
Funny you watched this movie today, bro. I had no idea you were going to be doing this one and I just watched your reaction to Batman '89 this morning. That's cool. There are lots of superheroes that I love and have loved over the years. But Batman is and always has been it for me. Hands down, the best. And supposedly, he was real. The story is that years back in Scotland, there was a guy named Wayne Bruce. He was a descendant of the Scottish king Robert the Bruce. He received an inheritance from his family, then donned a mask similar to Batman's cowl and went out in disguise taking on criminals. If this is true, he was actually the inspiration for the Batman comics.
Heath Ledger(Joker) adlibbed the applause, the reaction from Gary Oldman is genuine.
I remember the entire theater reacting to the bat motorcycle 🏍️ doing that flip thing lol, so cool
The lambo bruce drove is called a murcielago. Spanish for “bat” so still was in a batmobile
"I didn't kill him, the internal bleeding did." 😂
39:08 - Some times greatness is just a matter of destiny. That final explosion being delayed was NOT supposed to happen. It was a REAL technical glitch, but Ledger stayed in character and just REACTED when the explosion finally went off.
4:04 The board of "Batman Suspects" on the police department wall included Elvis, Abraham Lincoln and, yes, Bigfoot. 😉
This is one of those films where when I first watched it I thought it was nearing the end when it was half-way through, it just kept bringing more fun and entertainment throughout. There are not many films that can do that.
I also feel genuinely sad that Heath Ledger died after this film, it is arguably the best performance he ever did, as evidenced by the heavy toll it took on him, but I would have loved to see how he could have grown from this role into an even greater actor and the roles he could have brought to life if he was still alive today.
The underground driving was on Lower Wacker Drive in Downtown Chicago.
Love your reactions keep up the amazing work
40:58 - Accurate 2024 remake: Both boats blow up while the Joker is still talking.
I saw this in IMAX. The opening bank scene and the Hong Kong extraction were shot in IMAX. It was amazing.
indeed
Also heaths clapping in the cell when the police congratulated Gordon, was improvised, as was the look back, tap the detonator again when blowing up the hospital, as the charges actually didn’t go off as intended
This is the only Batman edition I make sure to watch when it's available... primarily because of Heath Ledger...such a talented young man and he's greatly missed...RIP Heath...
🌿🌿🌿
As a kid i used to imagine our car doing what this Batmobile does when it splits into a bike. Was crazy to watch this and see that, thought it was cool af.
Did you know in the integration scene heath ledger told Christian bale to actually hit him, so Heath is actually getting his ass kicked by bale.
I was lucky enough to see this one on the big screen and let me tell you, the 'LOOK AT ME'-roar made me jump in the seat with pure dread. Lawd, he sounds so terrifying in that moment!
It was Amazing seeing it in the HD Imax big screen, it took it to another level
Omg crazy cuz I was on ig watching Aaron eckhart talk about this film and was like man lemme go look for a reaction rq and boom u just uploaded
there are a bunch of GOATed hard ass lines in this movie
Look at the difference between actors running in front of a green screen and heavy CGI compared to practical explosions and street stunts.
Tada...... I'm still laughing off that one . He did make the pencil disappear .
THANK YOU for noticing the part about “Joker is still in the penthouse.“
Like… he’s with his henchman in a room full of billionaires. At least three or four of those dudes are getting kidnapped.
For me, it’s the only major flaw in an otherwise perfect movie.
The dinner party scene was the first scenes shot with Ledger in makeup and he was kept hidden from the cast so they didn't really know exactly what he was going to look like. The reactions on people's faces in the scene are more or less genuine.
Great reaction, J! Love the Rewatch Wednesdays; keep 'em coming. You may have watched these movies before, but this is our first time watching them with you, and that makes all the difference! Fun trivia fact: the older gentleman at the party who reminds the Joker of his father is the former US senator from Vermont, Patrick Leahy. He is a big comic book fan, especially a fan of Batman. He had cameos in all three of Nolan's Batman trilogy (as a Wayne Enterprises board member) while still seated in the Senate, as well as cameos in Batman Forever, Batman and Robin, and Batman v Superman.
Hey man I always love your reactions and also there is a video of a psychologist who specializes in violent criminals and he watched the pool hall scene about Joker’s dad and the doc said I guarantee that is 100% the real story of Joker’s scars… his looking up several times is a sign of remembering and his very aggressive tone compared to the story he told Rachel at the party!! Take care!!
Scarecrow deserves more screen time not only in this movie but future Batman movies he actually takes it seriously when Joker doesn’t actually want to kill Batman he jokes about it but he is actually just a lonely person with mental problems that has no friends and he sees Batman as his friend
i watched this movie 7 years after it came out and i remember loving it so much Joker was my favorite in this entire movie dead ass and i wanna say amazing reaction man its cool to have been apart of the re watch i will always love the dark knight movie I hope you re watch or watch for the first time the dark knight rises man you the youtube goat i said it once i say it again man im so happy to be apart of this family legit the best community on youtube man im so happy i found you last year you and blank and the community have improved my life man thanks you guys the goats
I love you you said,'imagine what would happen if his cape got caught in the wheels of his motorcycle. ' lol now I never will. Whenever I see this dude on a bike imma pucture it. 😅
Happy 16 years to the Dark Knight movie!
"I hate the voice." 😂
A little sad to hear. That was one of the things that made this batman the best.
@@Major42 I was just quoting him lol
I got an ad right on the frame of Rachel getting blown to ish, and I gotta say, if you chose that timing Blank you did your thing! It was glorious 😂 just a half second stillframe of Rachel getting destroyed 😂😂😂
Heath Ledger was legit terrifying in this.
The song you're looking for is Molossus by Hans Zimmer
One of my favorite all time movies. I saw it three times in the theaters alone. ❤🇨🇦
Definitely good on hearing men scream RACHEL for the rest of my life.
Hope you are having an great and awesome day ❤
48:50 Michael Keaton is the first person to do a different voice between Batman and Bruce Wayne because when he got the role he couldn’t understand how people didn’t recognize Bruce was Batman so he gave Batman a darker voice to hide the identity. Since Keaton did it all actors except for Clooney did a different voice. 51:09 see you wouldn’t be a good Batman then. Batman has morals and wouldn’t do something dirty like that and try to make an excuse that it wasn’t his fault cause that would make him just like the villains he’s fighting. Plus if he would’ve ran over the Joker then the Joker would’ve won and Batman lost cause Joker brought him down to his level. That’s what he did with Harvey.
Aaron Eckhart is such an underrated actor.
gas ain't cheap! you need fuel points hahahaha
Rip heath ledger loved this one he was a great joker I've seen this quite a few times great reaction j as always❤
One of my all time favorite movies! Heath will always be my favorite joker. RIP legend!
39:55 "its too much power for one person."
tell that to superman
He’s not a person, he’s a alien - J
When I was 8, I had a 4-wheeler and I dressed up as Batman. My cape got caught in the rear wheel, and it was with 1mph and I got pulled of it. A red mark on my neck and just a whole lot of damaged pride. I was Indiana Jones the next week.
15:14 scared me the first time in the theater too
@EOM Loved your commentary @JL as always. Great trilogy of films Nolan made.
Idk but during that parade I wouldn't have been robbing gotham Wal-Mart like the whole electtonic section
I don’t think anyone’s mentioned it yet, but with regard to the ferries…
as we know, with Joker, “it’s never that simple.“
I think it’s *just* as likely that Joker would set up that extremely effed up scenario as he would be to *lie* about the detonator blowing up the *opposite* boat.
Imagine sitting in a restaurant having and eating a nice breakfast and ur just arrested on the spot
Speaking of Michael Jai White...have we seen Spawn yet? I know, I know, I WISH it was a better movie than it really is. Our boy Al Simmons deserves better.
Edit: Yes, Barbara Gordon, who was also the first Batgirl, would later become known as Oracle after a bullet to the spine from the Joker paralyzed her.
Yes, he did talk like that last film as well.
Dude!!! I don't know why I thought of this but you should watch "What We Do In The Shadows" next.
"Night night for Bonzo"
Jay, have you seen "Bedtime for Bonzo?" 1951 film starring Ronald Reagan. That's where the saying comes from! ♥
Fantastic Movie Fantastic Reaction The Dark Knight 👍
28:30 its there but the way the camera is pointed at it gave it a "forced perspective look" pause the movie and youll see it.
46:22 i think its the opposite. reason is like gravity, it takes constant force to keep you there. madness is more like the lack of gravity. it just needs to turn off and you'll be lost, stuck, and without direction or control until it returns.
I think you're one of the few people to notice Joker holding the hammer in the hospital scene. 😂😂
