  • Hey, welcome to my channel.
10 years ago, I was kicked out of Wits university. Not dropped out, it wasn’t a choice, the university ejected me from the cohort due to failing grades. Today I’m restarting my journey in medicine at Wits.
Throughout my hiatus I continued searching for “failed medical degree“ stories, trying to find a story similar to mine from where I could draw inspiration. It yielded zero results. I couldn’t find any examples of someone who had been kicked out of med school and EVENTUALLY managed to then become a doctor. I searched for years before conceding that I was in uncharted territory. Lead by my own struggles and a pressing conviction, I’ve recorded my medical journey and what it’s taken for me to try again.
I’m evidence that no matter what your challenge is, if you persevere prayerfully and do your best, it will all work out. I believe in YOU!
Remember “Destiny can be delayed but it cannot be denied!”

@@rendanimulaudzi9831 Hi Rhendani, I’m sorry to hear that you’re going through this.
      That’s a very broad question.
I had no issues at Stellenbosch. I just studied, showed up for all my compulsories, consulted with lecturers if I didn’t understand something, I tried to find past papers and I tried to balance school and a social life.
I really enjoyed my undergrad, it wasn’t easy but it was less stressful than medicine for me. Most of all I really believed that I could complete this degree and do well.
I hope that some what answers you

I meant that although you found a plan B to go to stellenbosch. While you were at stellenbosch how did you process not chasing medical studies at that time

    • @Nou_rish
      @Nou_rish  Год назад

@@rendanimulaudzi9831 I think you misunderstood my journey. I was getting a BSc with the sole purpose of getting back to medicine. So even if I wasn’t in medical school I knew what I needed to do with what I had at the time to get back in.
And I had specific checkpoints at which I could apply to other universities. So after graduating my BSc, after honours and after MSc, but applications need money so I only choose 2 checkpoints.
Regardless of what I was doing working and getting experience or studying a postgraduate degree it was to get into medicine. That focus never shifted, and as a benefit I did really well in those places that if medicine didn’t work out I’d still have a fulfilling career in science and academia.

I was academically excluded from law school in 2017, after dealing with a year long depressive episode. I can never articulate the shame of coming back home after having been the first one in my family to make it that far. I was on a fully funded academic merit bursary, and everything was in place for me to do really well. But i failed, despite having shown so much potential, and for many years since then ive been so afraid of going back to school. Im scared that I'll fail again and disappoint everyone and myself again and the trauma that arises from being in that situation! Few can truly understand it. And im struggling with whether im going back for good reasons, or just to prove im not a lost cause. Like, is my self worth tied to having a degree? I wont lie, its a huge source of insecurity for me. I constantly feel underachieved especially when looking at where my peers are now, the people i used to outdo academically. Its tough. But im going back this year in August, and im mentally preparing myself to be secure in being "the older student", im 26. Im trusting God for that journey, wherever it leads. And I'm thankful for that hurdle in a way, if i survived that, then i can survive anything. Going back older, with a bit more self awareness and being more equipped with the tools to helpe cope mentally, i think its going to end well, i pray that it does. Thank you for sharing your stories, it is good to know im am not alone. And to anyone who's having to start over in life, be it in academics, career, relationships, i salute and honor you for your bravery. Especially in your mid to late 20s because its a time when we are expected to be settled and making strides in careers and such. Im deeply touched and inspired. I genuinely wish for a breakthrough in each of your lives, my prayers are with you. Godspeed and God first❤️❤️❤️

I can wholeheartedly relate to this ...I was a B+/ A-ish student in matric and as a result I got into med school immediately after matriculating ...honestly I wasn't ready for uni..korr any degree nje,not just medicine, but I went anyway..I got distracted, grooved, procrastinated to study.. wasted time doing nothings basically like bingewatching shows, anime and movies instead of studying ...then my results reflected that and that's when I had deteriorating mental health and got into a more severe depressive state ..I've always been an unusually anxious and sad kid growing up (but never received any help because being black and from a disadvantaged background etc )but I always got validated by my academics, since I was a top student and all. Now 7 years later post-exclusion I'm still a mess,no degree to my name and have resorted to abusing cannabis to cope with whatever sadness and darkness I'm feeling within myself...I tried studying different courses...I always dropped out because I'm still damaged from what happened to me and I haven't forgiven myself fully or at all and honestly I didn't really like these other degrees...but I'm working on dusting myself and do something with my life

I can totally resonate with your story, I was also there . The trauma, anxiety, feeling like a failure and literally sitting at home and feeling sorry for myself, and that totally changed my family's narrative about me a bright student. I started hearing about how stupid I was and how I repeated a module and got excluded. Fast forward to 9 years later got myself a job and started building myself again, the company I work for funded my studies got my undergrad and post grad in a different field than the one I had initially studied. I am now working as a manager and the possibilities are endless. It is still possible in your 30's . God has a way of redirecting you into your purpose please do not despair. Love and light

I also did experience excluded at UP in my final year with an addition of 2 years of my degree years. It literally crashed me so much the expectations that of am completing my degree this year to having to restart again from scratch. I am now in my next university completing my second year this year and next year it is my final year I am already on the what happened at UP cannot happen again I am doing very well but yah final year things changes and go upside down, I need to get a very high average so that I can get into wits gemp and if I get in I will be in medical campus again (my degree at UP was medical sciences) anatomy will creep again and difficulty in understanding physiology again will start but am hopeful not sure if I dealt with the exclusion don't know if am really pushing myself to get great marks academically due to trauma as a positive note or am just scared to fail again. Right now it seems like am managing but will I be fine later
I also strongly believe in God and really wouldn't have passed the exclusion phase and start over if wasn't for having faith and believing in HIm.

Thos resonates so deeply with me. I also got excluded from wits. This happened 5 years ago and I've only obtained a Bachelor's degree since. I feel like I have not done enough to be redeemed. I believe deeply that I can do it. I pray all the time for God to give me a path and it always goes back to medicine. So much anxiety, so much self doubt. I feel so stuck

    • @Nou_rish
      @Nou_rish  2 года назад

Hey Khanyi, I relate so much. Exclusion is traumatic and it challenges everything you thought you were and could be, Please allow yourself the grace to Heal. When I came back to Wits my mind was in shambles from that experience and I almost lost the opportunity but I got help just in time. Medicine will come if YOU keep at it, apply everywhere and do amazing where you Currently Are. It will come together, took me 11 years to find my way back and I guarantee you I will be a much better doctor now than if I'd completed this degree the first time around.

Thank you so much for sharing this story. It is somewhat relatable to a lot of us who were rejected multiple times. It makes one feel not abnormal to realise that there are others who are still battling with scars of the past even though they've made it through. I just pray that you don't let the little stumbles along the way (i.e. failing a test) be a description of your whole journey in medical school. the one thing Ive been trying to teach myself, is to always try and forgive myself and forget about the mistakes and let them not cloud my way forward into this degree.
sorry for the long paragraph 😬

Similar experience: Excluded from UCT in 1996. 2. Eventually went back to school in 2004 - did a diploma in Internal Auditing, BCompt, Hons in Fin Acc. 3. Worked as a Consultant and eventually started an Accounting and Tax practice with my wife in 2015. 4. End of 2017, at age 40, diagnosed with depression and slowing down made me realise that I wasn't aligned with my purpose, and Medicine came calling again. 5. 2018 - Applied to get into Wits' GEMP programme, passed the entrance exam, but got rejected due to low Honours marks. 6. 2019 - Went from giving up to registering for a PGDBM with Mancosa to improve my chances. 7. Finally got accepted by Wits into the 3rd year MBBCh, on the 10th of Jan 2020. 8. Now about to go into the 6th and final year. In other words, I say go for it!

I used to struggle a lot with anxiety. And it was centred around academics. Last year I learnt that I usually put Academics on the pedestal. And that is very unhealthy and damaging. Everyday I am learning not to put Academic as number one. Yes it is important but it is not part of my identity. Academics does not reflect who you are and that’s on PERIODTT! Your best is all you need to give.

But you are strong and your dreams will be achieved

You will overcome the mental struggles and achieve your goal

Before this experience I had never really had to deal with any personal mental health issues, so you're absolutely right in your analysis. However, today I am more mentally astute, healed and equipped to deal with facing trauma, difficult situation and overcoming my fears. This experience hasn't at all been rainbows and unicorns but it's been to my benefit and I am humbled and challenged daily but mostly I am grateful. Facing rejection and failure isn't easy but if overcome it breeds resilience, conviction and perseverance.

In 2019, I applied to almost 20 schools on common app and and got rejected by all internationally. I used up all the faith I had in me while applying that I was hanging on by a thread of faith after the decisions came in. I began to doubt the existence of God. I stopped praying and whenever I did, I blamed God for everything! I got depressed and suicidal and always felt I will never be enough for anything. Most of my colleagues made it out of the country. My life felt as though I was in a race, the whistle got blown and I stood there while the other participants took off. I am currently in college in my country but that was never the dream. I need to trust God, so I have given faith another chance. I never talk about it because I felt I needed to heal in order to share. But this video has taught me otherwise. The number of rejected applicants who are still out there, depressed and suicidal are many. You could be one and it's absolutely okay. I know you feel like a disappointment and that you will never be good enough... Don't worry you are not alone. But staying with such a mindset never did me good. Praying and talking to God more did me good. Give it a shot!

I wanted to do radiography or nursing but my first choice was radiography 😢....I was not accepted. I'm now doing a diploma in chemical engineering 🤣. And I don't know what I'm doing in engineering I'm lost but I'm getting average marks😅. I hope one day the light will shine and have a clear vision of my future...I just wake up every day and breathe. Ngi lost bandla😭😭

Hey sis, I’m sorry to hear that. Do your very best at engineering in the present, you don’t know where it’s taking you. I’ve learnt through my winding journey with medicine that everything I went through to become a junior medical scientist was preparing for where I am now as a medstudent. Nothing is a loss unless you treat it that way. Keep on applying and trusting, if you’re faithful where you are now, your time will come. You’re just in the waiting room to your dream 💭

With reading you have to find what you like and relate to. And also know why you’re reading something, is it for entertainment, for learning or for self help.

Thank you for sharing. Trust me when Is say I know how hard it must have been to actually sit and talk about this. But the other thing is that there's healing in saying things out, there's this relief that just comes over you when you share certain experiences. Remember the bible says in Rev 12V11 "And they overcame him because of the blood of the Lamb and because of the word of their testimony, and they did not love their life even when faced with death."
And I strongly believe your recovery and acceptance process will speed up. God will never allow you to face something you don't have the power to overcome. I always say the measure of your challenges shows you how much of a gem you are, it proves that you carry something great.
Also this brings the question of, am I fighting for what it is that I want without knowing that I'm straying away from where God wants me to be..
I really thank you for this because it just gave me the strength. I have always wanted to study medicine but it's just not working out. I started falling sick towards the end of my grade 11, I was kicked off from higher level, I had anxiety that came from God knows where, I was hardly ever present at xul in grade 12 coz I would always travel to see doctors and stuff. Upon my return to school, I was out on antidepressants and they were somehow working. It was round about the time we were preparing for externals, missed the whole month of thorough revision and preparation. within 2 weeks, I had to catch up and finish the maths content, had less than 2 weeks to study for externals and I was just ready for the worst but God who does wonders came through for me. I passed my grade 12 very well. I even did better than some of my competitors in class, performed as good as my other competitors. The thing that kept killing me was "how much would I have actually gotten if I had enough time to study like the rest?". And despite my results where I qualified for ANY OTHER COURSE, I still wasn't good enough for meds. Long story short, this is my second year that I'm at home and I'm still fighting to get into xul of meds.
And I totally feel you with the pain of being in the medical department, just not where you want to be. I actually registered of a course but I was like it would be mental trauma being in that department but not where I want to be so I cancelled my modules, left university to sit at home and wait for the chance to get into medicine.
I'd say this is crazy faith. I don't know how, but I have great faith that my tears will soon transform into tears of joy.
One thing I'll never forget is trying to hold my tears in as I walked out of the responsible dean or whatsoever the day she told me "there's nothing we can do"
Honestly, I feel a rejection letter is better than it just being thrown into your face like that
But, we always gotta fight for wht we want and with full faith, trust and confidence I say I'll be back in the comments but this time, with a different story
Thanks again for sharing. And we're in this together. If God is for us, who or what can be against us????
Ephesians 3V20 "Now all glory to God, who is able, through his mighty power at work within us, to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think."
    Shalom💗💓💕💓💞
