- As requested ... this video is what I hope is a fair and honest comparison between the Ampeg V-4B and Peavey VB-2 products. Although I plan to keep both, in my opinion, the Peavey is a much better and less expensive product, although it is not as handsome as the Ampeg. I paid $900.00 new for the Peavey and $1300.00 new for the Ampeg.
Peavey has always had very underrated bass gear. My first beginner bass was an affordable American made Peavey. 27 years later I've gone full circle and now play a Peavey Cirrus. I saw that Peavey amp today used for $550.

I have the Ampeg V4B and it kicks ass! no hum what so ever. If yours is making unwanted noise, send it back. My V4B is loud as I want it through my 810E Classic it sounds great. I do like the Peavey and thinking about getting one also.

I vote for the Peavey VB-2, the Ampeg being noisy and muddy sounding. I demoed a couple of Ampeg heads, PF-20T & PF 50T, at a shop with my bass, Gibson T'bird with flats, but found the noise floors too high on them. The only Ampeg that I liked was a SVT hooked up to a sealed 810 that I tried in a Guitar Center.
Best settings for V4B's and SVT's is treble and mid at 2 o' clock Bass at 3 o'clock ultra low off, 800hz and ultra high off if you run JBL E140's in a cabinet, if other speakers you may need the ultra high.
The VB2 blows the V4B out of the water.. So much clearer and nicer sounding. Looks better as well.

I love my vb2, I get great smooth clean to rip your head off grind with just the press of a button.

Unfortunately, I don't still own the original V-4B. I can tell you that from what I remember I liked it much better though.

+redonKiLaus you can find a ton of original v-4b's on eBay nowadays. I kind of want one mainly for its overdriven tone and because of the likelihood that it won't have the issues present in the reissue. Also you said that you got it as soon as it came out, right? Sometimes it takes time for them to work out the kinks before it starts to really work well
The New Reissue sounds OK with the deep switch. Other than that it was a hollow, edgy sound.
I love the peavey and ampeg. But you can cop the best cliff burton sounds out of the peavey. I found the ampeg sounds amazing but loses headroom unlike most ampeg. Could have been the particular amp I used
Hows that Peavey holding up.I saw this video ,when you first posted it and I know you spoke highly of it. I wanted to see if you still would recommend it.I an l ooking for a tube in that price range for bass .What do you think of the Mesa Boogie bass 400 ? Thanks
The Peavey is still a great amp, definitely like it much better than the Ampeg. I have not heard the Mesa/Boogie Bass 400, but I can wholeheartedly recommend the Peavey because of its awesome construction and sound.
I agree. The PV sounds smoother & more buttery. The Chinese Ampeg sounds harsher & rough around the edges (cheap).
I have an mid 90's V4BH with 6550's. Love the tone, but I probably would get a VB-2 (or 3) for a new back-up. Heard about issues with the inner fuse in the Peavey if a tube goes bad, but better built and USA made for the most part compared to the newer Ampeg. Also have an SVT 2 as well.
+Lawrence Milligan Assembled in the USA at Peavey. Only the handwired amps are made in the USA. Everything else that peavey has is made overseas.
VB3 is made and assembled in the USA. The VB2 was just assembled in USA.
I have a 77 Dist Model V4. Modded w MV & 6550 tubes. It really brings the thunder! This re reissue sucks. No low end to it at all.
Great review! But, you don't get a flat sound with passive tone controls when they're all set at 12 'o clock.

Peavey wins in sound and because it has more tonal options than the Ampeg.
I really like the sound of Ampeg but the price they charge for it is not worth it....

Unbelievable. Scratchy pot loose plate and him. I'll China bash for ya. I know those amps cost a pretty penny. Ampeg needs to bring ALL there stuff back to the USA. I mean come on. I got a Heritage 8x10 and I paid the extra money cause I was scared of the Classic line. Nice amps though man. I think next time I change rigs I'm going with Ashdown. What's your opinion of Ashdown?

Peavey's are just such ugly amps... I've owned some Peavey stuff, but that logo is so obnoxious, and their other aesthetic choices are pretty dubious.
Dude..check your lighting in your videos, you should know this by now. you can't see the peavey head too good!!! WTF?
Both of those amps are garbage Hartley Peavey has not put out a good amp since the late 80's. And well that is a Chinese Ampeg nuff said.
