That voice inside my head I call the critic. Not only does it show up when I’m playing but everywhere in my daily life. It’s taken me some time to recognize it and learn how to silence it. Once I learned the meditation technique to quiet it down self judgement and all the baggage that comes with shows up less. Jeff, you’re AWESOME!

Know thyself" (Greek: Γνῶθι σαυτόν, gnōthi sauton).. “Knowing yourself is the beginning of all wisdom.” Aristotle.. "Music is a moral law. It gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, a charm to sadness, and life to everything. It is the essence of order, and leads to all that is good, just and beautiful, of which it is the invisible, but nevertheless dazzling, passionate, and eternal form (Attributed to Plato. Wordsworth Dictionary of Musical Quotations, 1991, p. 45).... Cheers Jeff! 🖖

You’re speaking right at me, man! I’ll soon be taking an extended break from playing to recover from hand surgery. I’ve been angry at myself for physically not being able to do certain things on the guitar anymore. I know I need to rethink my approach and I appreciate your wisdom.

Thank you for this! I highly recommend Kenny Werner’s book Effortless Mastery on this topic- a lot of us (at one time or another) lose that spark in comparing ourselves with others, or obsessively “needing to sound good”. His section early in the book about a mentor forcing him to abstain entirely from playing for a month (if I remember correctly), in lieu of just going out to listen and enjoy music, and his subsequent breaking out of his self-imposed judgmental chains, is especially poignant. Great playing as always!

This video could not have come at a better time as I am in a bit of a guitar funk as I type this. I'm reminded of my voice teacher (I wanted to learn to sing a little) and when we were in the studio he would say that the studio space was like a lab, made for experimentation, not judging. Thank you Jeff, you're a great teacher and motivator. Ok, it's time to practice and play now...

I don't need an inner voice in my head. My own drummer told me I stink. I wasn't sufficiently melodic...in a power blues trio. When a drummer tells you you're not melodic enough, it's time to find a new line of work.

Jeff! I can't thank you enough for the timing of this video. I had rehearsal last night and it was rough, not just because of me, but I was just WAY too inside my head. I'm not a great player but I am decent, I'm working to become more melodic in my soloing (I may grab your pentatonic course for that) and develop more. We have a backyard "show" tonight, but following your advice in this video I am going to do my best to "Just Play" (I may write that on my Pedalboard!) LOL. Thanks for all you do bro! Jeff, Thank you. I'm a bass player who has been wanting play blues guitar for myself for a long time. I've taken lessons. I've practiced my scales. But I have never been able to get to the point that I could solo without it falling into what sounds like a baseline but 2 octaves higher. I bought a couple of your beginner blues courses at Truefire and whatever teaching method you have plus the technology to slow the examples down and stay in pitch as well as the ability to see the tab and what what you are doing on the fretboard has brought me forward in my guitar playing more in the last 3 months than in the 25 years previously. Again, Thank you.

A few things here. Man, these feelings we all have are so universal among us. Comparison IS the death of joy, not a new saying to me, yet it walks in the shadows of our minds, always happy to take the stage. And it’s best friend, practically its conjoined twin, is fear of failure, of not measuring up if you were to go public. Doesn’t seem like we can just end the two, instead we have to learn to cope with them, sort make our peace with them. “Fine, you make my insides turn butterflies and hornets when I have to play, but I’ll be playing anyway.” Make our mistakes, freeze up, fumble around… but survive the experience, and count the triumph better than the stings.
I started a nightly practice that I end my day with. I make a backing track with unlikely combinations of chords, and just play whatever comes without analyzing the musical structure. I’ve named this endeavor “In Search of The Wrong Note”. And when I find one, I try and find a new way to introduce it that sounds/feels musical. And when I do, a door opens and some new way opens up.
Kudos to all of us for trying, for persevering, and for still being in the search for learning and growing.
And of course, big kudos to Jeff for putting this out there. Thanks!

Peers or friends can be as bad as your own "inner voice" when it comes to jamming other with other players or bands. Our band would do gigs with other bands or festivals, and friends or my bass player would say "Oh, you can totally smoke him - you're way better than him." Maybe they were trying give me a boost, maybe not. My bass player wasn't, and he admitted it. Either way, I just looked at it as opportunity to play with people I respected, and I always thanked them if they invited me to play with them. I also tried not to "over play" to show that I wasn't there to show off. To, it was never a competition - just a lot of fun.
My bass player never got invited up to jam, by the way lol. A wise person once told me "You catch more flies with honey than vinegar." Thanks, mom :)

Will you come and re-plaster that an original wall from 1892? The whole room actually because it’s not some BS drywall. Because the estimates run over $10k to do that job. You’ll have to be skilled at old home renovations as it’ll have to be super smooth to paint to your standards. Then I’ll need you figure out how to properly 3 point light that said wall room and me so there are no shadows, or reflections, cuz as you clearly know, the professional 3 point lighting I use to make free RUclips instructional videos in 4K is needed extremely unforgiving and show up every blemish, nose hair, or paint swipe.
The lighting is 5600k as I said in 4K at 30fps. I usually set the iso at 200. I then shoot to the hd card and record the audio in logic.
I then export those files and import them into Finalcut pro. Then I begin editing the video. A few hours later I have to make the thumbnail and come up with a catchy title.
I’m glad you enjoyed the video but please before you post such things in such a flippant way understand what goes behind it. If the paint on my wall bothers you, don’t watch. But don’t comment on it. I’m a musician putting out free instructional material on playing the guitar. If I were talking about house paint or plastering or This Old House l, fair play. But from me and every other RUclipsr please don’t post stuff like this.
