Jeff you sound absolutely amazing! Your touch and your tone are superb .....
Well talk about making my day my friend. This means the world coming from you. 🙏🏻🙏🏻
What ☝🏼he said !!
IBID!
Wise words! Working on our strengths is important. Discovering our strengths is even more important, obviously.
I sat with a guitar player friend who was really a fast player. Even though I practiced for years I couldn't achieve what he had. I had him tap his fingers on a table as fast as he could and I did the same, his speed was double mine. Physically I didn't have the ability that clearly he had. My point is, try first but if it doesn't work play to your strengths as you said. Mine happened to be melody, sweet bends and sustained notes.
We are actually a dynamic duo when playing together, he does the "flash" and I pull the heartstrings.
I’m in your camp compared to many of my friends!
cool 😎
I've noticed that I enjoy practicing more and more as I get older. Performing is amazing, but I'm never happier just sitting down to work on something for an hour. It's like a meditative experience for me. No phone. No distractions. Just me, my guitar, and a metronome.
Amen!
I've just practiced as warm up for band practice, and totally fresh ideas was coming in flow, no such feeling as that. I was literally smiling and laughing at the same time. I took a swing at Sultans of swing in the style of EVH, Gary Moore and Randy Rhodes just because i felt like it 😁 Of course I won't be doing that later this day 😉
Didn't start guitar until I was 55, now 62 and am still trying to grow. Love your teaching......have all your TrueFire lessons. You are amazing. Thank you!!!
Thank you very much! I appreciate the support and kind words. Keep going!
65 now starting at 15 in '72.
couple of detours where i didn't play but gigged some, last in '05. Practiced to work the set list.
Now, any play time is fun. Without the 'fun', fergetit. too old to worry about being 'good'. Me is all i need.
ha, a little Montrose tune i loved,,,,work on those arpeggios then slam the chords. That's home for me.
I stopped trying to play fast years ago, I mostly try to play guitar like a singer sings. I focus on melodic soloing.
Thank you Jeff for your timely words of wisdom. I say timely because I have the upcoming task of trying to get a bunch of fellow retirees to push past the cowboy chords. You have provided plenty of food for thought in such a short video. Could have listened to the sound of that Les Paul for another hour at least.
Ive found out that i practice better intervals. If i put the guitar down and come back it seems like whatever i am practicing just soaks in better. I will work on 2 or 3 small licks to something until i get them down and then go to the next.
Great stuff. Thank you
Words of wisdom from start to finish.
Thank you.
practice with intent...I love that, thanks Jeff!
🙏🏻🙏🏻
Good words Jeff!!! Love it!! And very inspiring!❤
Why do I get this sense that you enjoy the "harsh" ones, lol? Good stuff. Thanks Jeff
😂
I've been playing over 61 years and I have found I play MUCH better when I start with exercises. I'm 75, I HAVE to. The melodies come more automatically after some dedication to that practice. Tickets to my bedroom, sell out daily ... I must be gettin' it right!! 🙂
Nailing it!!
I just turned 76 in March, I with arthritis and stiff fingers I still bang away on weekends
I love your pep talks it really helps me to keep trying thanks Jeff 😊
🙌🏻🙌🏻
Great advice and mentorship, thanks Jeff!
Thank you and you are most welcome.
Great advice and insight spoken by a pro. Thanks man and all the best.
Thank you and same to you. 🙏🏻
Excellent insights and advice Jeff. Thanks!
You’re welcome and thank you!
Wealth of wisdom and inspiration, Jeff! 👍❤️
Thank you my dear friend!!
Another 10 minutes of great advice! I love that gold top you make it sing - it doesn't matter whenever I see that in your hands my ears are in for a treat.
Thanks as always Jeffrey!
You are a blessing to me Jeff. You are a constant source of encouragement and I do so enjoy your sweet tones you get out of your guitars!
Thank you Brian!!!
@@JeffMcErlain Are you going to be in California anytime soon?
Awesome ways to look at practicing!!!
Thanks!!
The one about "If you almost have it, then you don't have it" reminded me of one of my favorites:
"Don't just practice it until you can play it right. Practice it until you can't play it wrong."
Ha! That’s a good one too! Thanks.
Your LP looks amazing!!
🙏🏻
Thanks for the inspiration Jeff. We can all use a pep talk once in a while. You're the best.
Thanks man!!
I’ve already listened to a jazz guitarRoundtable, watched Frank Vignola explore 3 ways of comping AllBlues. See what happens when one Springs Forward … and now , here you go … what a great new Sunday morning 🤠
Thank you my friend!!
Your setup looks great Jeff. Love the dark moody feel!
Thanks!!!
Absolutely love your videos & your wisdom Jeff. Thankyou for sharing these. My problem with practising is that I take too much on & I end up jumping from one thing to another as there's so much I want to learn & be able to do so I'm getting nowhere fast & its so frustrating because I'm 54 & been playing over 30 years & this causes endless bouts of lack of confidence in my playing even though I've played in cover bands over the years.
Thanks Paul. Man I understand that feeling and I think most people suffer from it. I found when I started focusing on smaller ideas, things improved. I wish I had done that from the start!
@Jeff McErlain Thanks Jeff. I guess 3 lifetimes with this wonderful instrument still wouldnt be enough time to get to grips with it
Thanks Jeff! You have a well-balanced, philosophical approach to playing guitar and making music - I always find your videos inspiring.
P.S. More Bo, please! ;)
Thanks as always! Bo says hi. 🐾
Another fantastic video from a fantastic youtuber have a good weekend
Thanks! You too!
Smooth playing, I like this Guy.
Well thank you very much!
I just play a lot, whenever i can. its all practice i figure
Great lesson there mate... as you alluded to, "I'm getting nowhere" and then, later on or
the next day it's "Hey, I'm getting better..." (that time lapse/delay thing)
Thanx Jeff... I luv the carve on that '52 (?)
53. And yeah the carve is sexy for sure. Thanks for watching as always Jonny!
excellent
Thanks pal!
I never have Nothing to practice, because I always have a library of Jeff McErlain Masterclasses to return to. You really are a fabulous teacher and your classes, as well as your vidi’s, always bear new fruit when I come back to them. It’s interesting to see how a year later I get something totally different out of the lesson because my skill level has grown commensurately and thus I’m able to mine new gems. Keep doing what you do, we’re all better players because of it.
Meeno, thank you so very much for this. I really appreciate you and your support. Makes my day to know you are getting something out of the material. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Practicing is great. It's a discipline and like many other disciplines, it requires perseverance and patience with ones' self. I learn a lot more about myself through practicing so much so that I can apply things elsewhwere in my experiences of life. What is key is time and my management of it. Don't have enough time? Make time, it can be done ☺
🙌🏻🙌🏻
Hi Jeff, hope you're well!
Is that Les paul an original 1952 model? KRs, EB
@@EasyBreather000 it is a real ‘53.
I grabbed the 'Soloing with Major Triads ' before the video ended........I'm off to Practice ...........'Soloing with Major Triads'...thanks Jeff.
Thanks Jason!
Nice the 52 I think you said. Excellent. I was just thinking about this topic. I'm practicing too many things, this is JIT.
I try to break practice into specific subjects. Usually I’ll separate the subjects into equal time slots UNLESS one or two need MORE work. It’s helpful for me to decide what I want to practice a day before; when I do that, I’ll look forward to the next day a little more.
Good advice!
There was I, practicing when this came up in my feed...... 🤣
See?!!?!
Really fine line for me these days between “practice” and “playing for enjoyment in the comfort of my studio.” Maybe the difference is as subtle as intention? Thanks for the content. Your stuff on TrueFire is great-I’m going to guess that financially you see a greater return if I access your lessons here?
Hi Seth, yes practice v playing. I’ll have a video on that coming soon. As to your question, jmguitarlessons.com is my own teaching site where you’ll find all my new material. Love truefire as well! But my focus is jmguitarlessons.com.
I'll never get good at sight reading or classical guitar, but I still practice both, as a challenge and part of my musical path. I have used reading a little here and there, and the feeling of actually being able to do it is quite rewarding 😉
Of for sure. It’s not an easy instrument to read on.
Sage advice. How do you deal with muscle soreness from playing alot? Are there any stretches, exercises, or rest periods that you recommend?
That’s in an upcoming video! But mainly lots of breaks and stretching. Sounds cliche but listen to your body. It does give you the signs it’s time to back off a bit.
I just come back for that LP. Talk about whatever, but please keep playing that guitar 😊 (and the talking is good too!)
Lol. Deal!!
If you’re looking to eventually start a band but want stage experience now..? If you have musician friends who are gigging..you could volunteer to be a stage hand/tech… You’ll learn as much as your eyes and ears are open..
Good advice!
A fair point, roadies are necessary, and bloody quick learners
Ask any band who decided to have a little more refreshments!
👍
hey jeff
i agree with tim! and love those quotes. btw, how do u keep your rosewood boards so dark and rich-looking.
I’ve got like four or five guitars that have good Rosewood boards they’re all expensive guitars, but they look dry, lifeless and kind of brown as opposed to a really rich dark chocolate like yours. I noticed a couple products out there. I’m wondering what you use ? i do oil them but it dries out snd they look not much better…
thnks!
Hey honestly I don’t do anything to them. I do always look for guitars with dark boards in them on purpose. Some of these, like this LP, are Brazilian rosewood.
@@JeffMcErlain ah. argh…i guess i didn’t think about that when i was buying my VERY expensive CS fenders and gibs! ima try that new montys montypresso wax.
👊
I imagine the worst thing about owning that gold top is that when you’re playing it, you don’t get to be looking at it. Phew!
Ha! She’s a looker!
I am since long convinced that there is glory in practice.
Then you understand!
Is that a new LP? Sounds like perfection. (I should have said, your hands pull perfection out that thing).
Thanks man! I’ve had that guitar for a while. But you are correct that guitar is magic!
Hey Mister!!! Can you tell me how to get to CARNEGIE HALL?.................
🙄😂
@@JeffMcErlain Learn, Practice and Play Right?
It took me twenty-five years to learn how to play the f chord.
What year is that beautiful Les Paul?
1953!
It is impossible to practice everyday and not get better, it is also impossible to get better without practicing.
Yes! Practice is the key word.
@@JeffMcErlain yes, but people don’t respond well to having one word, “practice” yelled at them, so I thought I would spell out the logical incentive of practicing.
@@jpmcmullan8666 it was appreciated for sure! Thank you !
oh yeah...i know...practice seems to be all i do......haha.....these days anyway.....hey...but i like it...
You Screw Over Everyone that is doing the gig !
Ha! Well thanks but I’ve had the pleasure to have my butt handed to me on many gigs on a regular basis. It’s painful but you learn fast!
If I miss one day of practice, I notice it. If I miss two days, the critics notice it. If I miss three days, the audience notices it.
Ignacy Jan Paderewski
Why is that guitar so dirty ?
thanks Jeff
You’re welcome Ray.
