I love both watches, but I'd personally go with the Moonwatch as a first luxury watch. It is such an icon. Now, if my day-to-day attire tended to be more formal, which it is not in my case, I would have picked the Datejust. Having said that, my first luxury watch was a Tudor Submariner, and my current watch is a Tudor Black Bay that I bought from Bob's a few years ago.

I like this new series. Of the two, I'd go for a vintage Datejust. A four or five digit DJ 36 is a perfect entry point into luxury watches - widely available as they made so many of them, not too expensive for a luxury watch, looks great on almost every wrist, is a quintessential Rolex, will last many lifetimes with proper care and is extremely versatile. My first luxury watch was a Tudor and today I am wearing my favorite watch - Rolex OP 36 green dial. Cheers!

My first luxury watch was a Rolex Sub pre ceramic. Back in the late 90s early 2000s. I loved it. But later on I also fell in love with Omega. Picked up a Seamaster 300m and Speedy 1861. Honestly buy both, even better get one with a discount if you still can.
Wrist check: GMT Master II, Coke bezel, Ref 16710. Nice to see from the comments that Fred also has the Grand Seiko Katana. Apparently, that leaves another 498 of us out there. The two picks today were good, but a tad bit on the high-end side in my opinion for a first luxury watch. I would go a tad lower on the affordability scale an opt for a Tudor or Grand Seiko. Get a feel for how a luxury watch suits your lifestyle and then as you learn more about them, you will see if a higher priced watch would scratch the itch better.

I think the Omega Aqua Terra 41mm is a great starter. Dressy, buy reasonable entry level price, decent 8900 movement. The market to purchase a Rolex Date Just is a little frustrating since rarely is a new one available without paying premium on retail price. I think it turns off new collectors.

Excellent discussion. I’ve owned both and currently own a 3861. For all the reasons mentioned that the Moonwatch might not be the best first luxury watch - have to wind it, have to know a little horological history, may have to polywatch the Hesalite are the reasons I say it’s the better “first watch”. I see so many Rolex models, including the Datejust, worn by people who have no idea what they are wearing that it’s almost comical. They know it’s nice and expensive but that’s it. Totally a status symbol for them. If you’re getting into watches, learn about them and the history of brands. It means so much more when you do and makes collecting/wearing so much more enjoyable and rewarding.

I knew about the Speedy but didn’t buy one until the 3861 movement sapphire sandwich came out. And Ripley- nice Cartier but it’s quartz! 😘
I’m wearing my Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Control Date 147.8.37.S. I love the Speedy but I think your first luxury watch should be something that is water resistant. So I would pick a Rolex watch. An Explorer, Air king, Sub, GMT or maybe a DJ or an OP. I believe the Speedy is a perfect second or 3rd luxury watch. That’s something you can get once you learn more about the hobby. Just my opinion.
As an owner of 2 Rolex (Submariner and GMT-Master II), and Omega Speedmaster 57, I have to say that to me Omega is a no brainer! More comfortable, open back-case where you can see the mechanism, luxury and uniqueness sensation, elegance and sportiveness at the same time… to Me the Speedy57 is the perfect watch and my next purchases will be Omega as well
Of the two of the Rolex Datejust is definitely the best choice. But my vote would be for the Rolex Explorer. The Rolex Explorer 36mm was my first luxury watch. At one point I traded it for a two-tone Submariner but ultimately decided it was a little too flashy for me and traded it back for another explorer. This time a 39 mm. This is the one that will stay in the family.
My first luxury watch was Pepsi GMT, circa 1969 that I wish I still had. Wrist check Tag Aquaracer. Another point…loved this format show. I miss old “Watch in a Box”. The new one with just opening a “surprise” is totally boring. Half the fun of the show is the rapport between Emily and whoever she has on with her. Bring that back please!

Have a 1968 Omega Geneve that was my dad’s. Have loved Omega all my life and recently bought my first Omega of my own. And it was the Speedmaster Moonwatch sapphire sandwich. It’s my daily wearer. Goes with so many great straps. I do like the look of that Rolex though. Am in the market for another and was thinking NTTD seamaster. But that Rolex looks great too.
Well, as a first luxury watch, Speedmaster is more doable and worth the price, change with any straps you like and it became a 'new' watch. On the other hand, with the same budget of price you could only get a 2nd hand of much older generation datejust.
On my wrist currently is a 116500LN, which happens to be my favorite watch. I do recommend a Submariner for a first watch. It’s durable and good looking enough for all occasions. I know it will put a smile on their face for a very very long time.
I’m wearing a vertex that is only given to the army sas and only make 25 a year. I’ve got about 15 watches. Paneria Rolex, omega iwc zenith etc but I love the British made vertex
The only drawback on the moon watch is the glass VS the sapphire crystal on the datejust. My first luxury watch was bought in 1992 a Datejust 36mm with an engine turned bezel.
my first is the cartier santos, second one is the speedy... hopefully a no date sub or a daytona will complete my collection one day( with wife 's approval )

The Speedmaster has an engaging history, is an absolute strap monster, is timeless and incredibly well made. I think it shows slightly more knowledge than Rolex, the default mass market luxury watch. Omega speedmaster will get a nod from watch enthusiasts, the Rolex from everyone else. Best solution, buy both.
I have to ay both the Speedy and the Datejust are great options but they are hard to compare. One is a chronograph that has some history to it and the other is the quintessential time and date watch. So annoyingly I'd vote for both equal. For me I would choose something else, sporty yet elegant but reliable with a great movement that can be dressed up or down, it's a first luxury watch so may be an only watch. So I'd suggest the Omega Constellation Globemaster Pie Pan dial in blue with the tungsten carbide fluted bezel that is very scratch resistant on leather or as a very close second the timeless Oyster Perpetual 41mm silver dial with gold hands and markers. On my wrist today is a G-Shock long discontinued black titanium square GMW-B5000 with the positive display. On my wrist tomorrow who knows but I might just pick my old 1863 Speedy after seeing this video or my Globemaster pie pan dial.

Hey, Fred! I have one, too. Great watch, super accurate. It was trial & error getting the bracelet adjusted to the proper fit. What is your opinion of the dial? I was slightly disappointed that it wasn't as red and textured as it was in the photographs.
@@jsusna1972 I also was a little bit disappointed that the details and color really don't pop without bright lights on the dial. The red / gold accents are quite classy. I had been leaning Shunbun or White Birch (predictable) before seeing the Katana. GS for me needed to be Spring Drive. Have been thinking about the Peacock also. I have had a Rolex OP in Oyster/Blue on request for awhile. Went into the AD to discuss recently and the GS really popped under the lights. He mentioned he'd recently sold another Katana recently also. As for the Rolex vs Omega... Aqua Terra Small Seconds is on my radar also. I am reminded of the end of Trading Places... "Lobster or Cracked Crab?" / "Can't we have both?" / "Why not?" Extra primo good Mr Coleman sir, I say!

@bobswatches I went with a 116503 black dial/diamond hour markers. My wife and I liked the two tone. It may not be super popular, but for me to get a Rolex with GOLD and the DIAMONDS was amazing - particularly for my first Rolex!! It's never going anywhere...except to my kids one day.
Went with a 3861 sapphire for my first and since have added a DJ41. I think it's a perfect combo (black and white dials). I think I need to add a Sub or YM and a 3 watch collection is complete. If I get a call for the Sky Dweller then DJ has to go.
