Great information, but as a fellow roof cleaner, I want to share some of my life experience. Read this please and consider what happened to me. Jumping off roofs doesn't seem like it is that bad, but that is youth and the feeling of invincibility over common sense. I'm a martial artist as well and I cannot tell you how many times I've jumped off roofs into a landing roll and never saw any harm in it at all. Now that I'm older, I would give so much to be able and go back and change that mind set. You see, when I was 41, I tore my meniscus in my right knee due to repeated stress of impacts. If I had been older I could have done a knee replacement, but a knee replacement only lasts so long before you have to do a second replacement, and there are only so many times you can replace that knee before you've used enough bone to where further replacements are no longer an option. So the only option at that age was to shave the meniscus down to where it didn't catch as I walked, and get as much life out of my knee as possible before having knee replacement surgery. Now for the truly painful part - the surgery wasn't bad at all and recovery was quick, but my orthopedist stressed strongly - I cannot run and put that much stress on my knee or I'll be in a VERY bad spot because I'd fully separate my meniscus and force surgery sooner than is recommended. My daughter was born about 10 months old after my knee surgery, and not being able to run and play at full speed with your kid as they grow up is heart breaking. Your kid(s) will want to run, romp, play tag, race and on and on, and a young kid won't understand why your body can't run and play like that, they just know they want to run and play with their father and he can't. The pain in my knee is nothing, but looking into your kids eyes when they want to run and play with you and you have to keep telling them that you can't, that's a pain I hope this comment can spare you. I played football, ran track, and loved being able to run - I've always loved it. So I cannot stress enough having a safety harness and not jumping off of roofs. I know you're into Par-Kor (SP?) and have been able to manage and direct your falls so far, but that one time you cannot, could end your life or leave you crippled. Set the ropes to catch about 6 feet from the edge and that risk is overcome. Once you're married and have kids, taking care of them as much as possible for as long as possible will become a major driving force. Take it easy on your body. Those impacts stress your ankles, knees, hips, and every vertebrae in your spine each time. You don't feel it now, but when you start hitting your 40's and 50's and start having herniated discs in your back and failing joints and frequent pain, you'll wish you had taken my advice. As a roof cleaner, your legs are your livelihood. You maintain your truck and equipment and take the best care of them as you can. Those are easily replaced, your body is not. Take care of it.
Ty and I understand what it is you're saying and I appreciate it. I have only had to jump off like 3 times I dont like to but I can if needed. I never put any unneeded stress on my body and I know my limit and can accept that. I only take jobs that I can easily walk and clean and "soft wash" the rest. I have kids I care for from 18 years old to 8 years old and I agree they are the biggest push to stay safe. I wish you the best and thanks for the love.

If you Google the top 10 most dangerous jobs in the USA, anything involving getting on a roof typically ranks #3 or #4. People think being a policeman or fire fighter is really dangerous, but by comparison, adding the number of people killed on the job in both of those professions usually doesn't even break the top 10. Looking at the number of deaths' per year from #10 down to #3 or #4 is a huge difference. I say this for two reasons - 1, to make people aware of the dangers, and 2, to make people in our profession aware, because this can also be used as a selling point at times when people want to haggle over price, thinking the job is a piece of cake. Put them on a hot roof and sweat out gallons of water, get leg cramps and such and still stay safe on a roof...

To be totally honest, I was warned of some of these things when I was younger, but I chose to ignore it because I was young and dumb, and I mistakenly thought knowing how to land and roll would keep my legs safe. It did, but only to a point. Knowing how to fall properly didn't mitigate 100% of the damage, it just reduced it.
Very sorry that you can’t run anymore. Have you heard of fascia restoration tools? Some good info here on youtube on tools like the fasciablaster, and dr Joseph Jacobs’ tools.

I'm lucky enough to be able to walk with no pain really, it' just running that causes me pain. I ended up with bad luck with my first orthopedist and he felt he could get a good view of my cartilage in my knee with an X-Ray, then sent me to physical therapy for 90 minutes twice a week for a month, and at the end of that month my knee was in even worse shape. Who knows how much more damage he caused my knee. I forced him to schedule me for an MRI of my knee and took it to an orthopedist that specializes in nothing but knees and he told me to get crutches and stay off my knee as much as possible, and he scheduled me for surgery on the Friday of Memorial Day weekend at 3:30. If he was giving up his early Friday on a holiday weekend to squeeze me in, I had to believe he felt it was urgent to get my knee fixed ASAP.

A sad memory for me, it does depend upon the market. It really has to be service of this type...something that must be done in person manually, which forces most competition to be local only. Anyone hard-working and decent can find your way to compete successfully in a relatively small local market (small compared to regional/statewide, national and worldwide). Noteable with this example and too many, Josh of Stwan's Pressure Washing said he worked for others for 10 years, and he had to buy ?$10,000? in equipment and ?probably $250,000 in bond and insurance? to start this, plus have at least a $3,000 starting pick-up truck ($6,000 a likely minimum)...fairly extensive start-up requirements. I learned carpet cleaning with Chem-Dry to their level 3 of 5 technician levels and was very good at and enjoyed the work. As the original poster said, cleaning work is very relaxing, I agree! I would and could have, and seriously looked into, starting my own Chem-Dry franchise...but I needed $30,000 cash minimum to begin a franchise, under an approximate $250,000 purchase/loan (rare to have a new franchise available). Besides way safer and more legit to add a $10,000 bond, for a carpet cleaning business (replacement of an expensive carpet or couch). Always more than enough carpets to go around among competitors...same for mechanics, CPAs, realtors and funeral services. The other part of the sad memory for me besides a carpet cleaning business being just out of my reach, was the same for a lawn care business. This time for the different reason of too small a market (NOT ubiquitous/everywhere in a locale like carpets in every American city or tile roofs in Florida and southern California) already with many competitors. Albuquerque--10% or less of properties with any lawn/grass whatsoever...and because having a lawn at all is already pricey and high-end, every existing lawn is already being serviced. I worked for a year in Colorado Springs for a lawn aeration and lawn care service that even did some landscaping, became a top aerator/sales and crew lead, and was offered by the owner to extend his business to Albuquerque, under a guaranteed salary using his equipment and funding. Colorado Springs is full of full-yard lawns AND at least half the population is well off because of so much government and institutional money (4 military installations and at least a couple large colleges in the city--all of which stay strong even in economic downturns), easily able to afford two $35 lawn aerations each year! I knew that with my skills I could eventually break into and turn a profit, even in the small, very competitive market in Albuquerque...but predicted it would take 2 years to build sufficient clientele and reputation. The man offering me the salaried position already was barely scraping enough profit in Colorado Springs for his own family...mostly because he had 6 children, which is incredibly expensive. He was a good boss who made sure his people were paid first. He lost money on a landscaping job or two I helped him with (nothing because of me) and barely had sufficient aerating machines. So again, I figured he would run in the red to finance my salary, absolutely sure, at least the first year, if not likely the second...besides be out a full set of machinery and equipment, diluting what he had to work with in Colorado. I spent weeks manually researching the Albuquerque market. However, being an honest man, I was so sure it would take the minimum of 1 year, likely 2, before achieving profitability, that I so much thanked him for the trust and the generous offer, but declined, explaining to him the critical difference in lawn care markets between Colorado Springs and Albuquerque. It broke my heart and frustrated me, because I would have loved becoming his business partner and finally starting my own self-sufficient life.... But yet another day...I successfully started a great, expanding career in the last years, but out of a bad second marriage with now two bad ex-wives haunting and hurting me continually...I was pushed until I dropped out. This, my first ever career success, done on Career Plan K, my 11th serious and major/massive-effort career attempt--now stalled out for 2 years and counting, Career Plans A through J all failed. I will have to either hard reboot Plan K or pursue a new Plan L--and I'm not yet in position for either yet, needing to navigate and weather an avalanche of multifaceted abuse and storm from ex #2. I am human, not superhuman. And I am good, not bad, as both exes continue to treat and punish me. I made honest but serious mistakes in marrying and/or having children with either woman. Live and learn. I won't quit but it has been hard as hell and isn't yet any easier. It's the hardest thing to oppose women who wholesale lie to themselves and/or others and lack other integrity and balance!
Those tiles have grit on them, they are actually fairly easy to walk. This is south Florida and I pressure clean as well down here. Pretty easy work for alot of profit! Greetings from Filthy Force Pressure Cleaning!
@@SERGENT55 I'm originally from Europe and worked on the slopes roof of 5th floor buildings with no ropes along with many other people. Antenna guys, electricians, masons, I've never seen anybody using ropes.
One of my clients hired a reputable pressure washing company to clean her tile roof. This caused massive flooding around her chimney flashings resulting in nearly $5000 in interior water damage for a job priced at $1200. The company also refused to pay for the damage. Although, it is fun for people to watch, this appears to be a dangerous and excessively laborious method of roof cleaning when you could use a soft wash system which will get you the same results and a longer lasting clean using only a fraction of the amount of water and labor required to deliver the clean.

@Jcam Camarij Well, if they are way too old, you will break them. But if they are like max 15-20 years old - than everything is ussualy fine (at least in our country with ceramic and concrete tiles). They are meant to step on them (maintanance of things on roof) but you should be careful.
Was just gonna mention that. Im a painter and I hate ceramic tile roofs. Always break one or two. I let the customer know that Ill try my best not to but its not a guarantee. Then again Im 240lbs
Black tiles attract more heat so when cleaned it help keep the roof cool. There's a scientific study of rocks that were black in the artic have no ice on them unless it fell on it or got wet and froze.
I've been a roof inspector for 5 years and ill my 2 cents on actually safe it is to be on a roof. Many roofs in Florida are usually only about 15 feet off the ground and sadly most roofs don't have a real safe anchor point to even tie down into and also wearing a Harness is really only effective for roofs higher than 25' off the ground (2 stories and up) since the roof/core are usually longer than 25'. As for the wet tile, the older the tile is, the more grip you actually get from it even when wet. Most unsafe kinda roof are the glossy tile when wet, you'll slip on those without even trying to. Also ive only fallen off a roof once which was only a 1 story roof and I slipped off it backwards and thankfully landed in a way where I didn't really get hurt. Sure, roof work is dangerous but so are a dozen other things in the work of construction industry. As for measures you can take to be safe on a roof with tile: 1: Know how to walk on it safely without breaking any tile 2: Have a good pair of shoes that have enough surface area on it that will give you the best grip for you 3: Know the Slope of the roof youre working on and the tile types, usually on most tile between a 3 to 5 slope roof is pretty safe but once you start getting into 6 to 7 slope roofs, that is when they can get unsafe and usually not accessible. Beyond that, I've seen dozens of roof cleaning services like his all the time down here in Florida using the same or some older equipment on roofs doing it the same way he does.
You would think with today's engineers, architects and brainiacs, there could be a safety system designed for tying off safe in these situations. Even if only 10' - 15' above ground. Though many people do get injured just working with 6' step ladders. Mostly because of user error. But then again, look at how the engineers and architects still design those tall 1000' + towers with a large bulb that needs to be changed by someone free climbing the final 100' or so to change the damn bulb. If the architects and engineers actually had to experience climbing and performing that chore, they would design something a bit different.
Impressive work. I happen to remember one guy from my math class in college. He said his father and himself were both contractors, one day he fell off the roof or a ladder, injured his back permanently. He can no longer deal with construction works, so he went to school. :)
I always hear that you should never use a surface scrubber on any roof but this guy seems so knowledgeable about the deterioration of roofs and mildew penetration that he has me convinced he knows what’s what. Awesome video.
I used to work for a company washing and painting roofs. I didn't really go up on the roofs unless I didn't have anything to do around the shop. First job I ever had that paid me to much money. I originally helped start up the company and design some of the equipment and methods we used. I also took care of customer complaints but there weren't many of those. They did good work. They never sent out a second bill and they never had anybody who never paid.
What about felt soled boots, like what is used for fly fishing? Felt gives phenomenal grip on wet, Algae covered river stones. I bet it would work beautifully on wet, algae covered roof tiles
Great advice buddy. I have pressure washed roof before but not like this man. I just you straight water with a pressure washer and it took me 2 days for $200 bucks. I am not a pro and I only did it because someone needed it done and couldn't get someone to do it.
Looks great man, I’d look into just soft washing roofs though. Let the chemical do all the work, it takes two to three applications on the roof to fully clean it usually but I believe it’s the proper way to clean any roof type(tile,shingle,metal).
Chemical cleaning is a lot safer and a lot less damaging on roofs. With pressure you strip the coating off these tiles. That’s why all professional roof cleaners soft-wash roofs. And yes I said all do because the ones that use a surface cleaner for a roof aren’t professionals.

@@tscott7345 Pressure on shingles damages them. Period. The chemicals used to clean roofs are biodegradable, green, and break down into salt and water. While you blast bits of roof off and their protective coating, opening the tiles pores which causes them to be more acceptable to bacteria and algae growth, the professionals with education and cleaning experience to disinfect the roof, keeping protective coatings on, and use garden hose pressure to truly clean, not just blast the big stuff off. I guarantee chemical cleaning will always outlast pressure cleaning on a roof. I guarantee your roofs will have algae growth come back a lot faster than the ones that are professionally treated. You dont clean roofs, you just blast the big stuff off, leaving the spores still and that causes them to grow back.... you dont kill it like a chemical cleaning would.
GF had this done on a shingle roof. Result was all the aggregate was blown away. The roof was flagged as an issue on the sale of the house and she had to reduce 10k on the house price. Sure it's not an issue with hard surface tiles.

I'm not an expert at all in clay tiles, but I'm assuming to tie in fall protection he would need to try and pop a couple tile free and reapply them afterwards. If it was asphalt shingles and they are stuck, it's a matter of lifting a shingle up and screwing your bracket to the roof
@@batmansdad3195 usually accomplished with a ground anchor and long lanyard for the fall arrest harness on the opposite side of the house from where the work is being performed. Can't slide more than a few feet from the roof's edge before you stop.
Most pressure washer use 2 to 3 gallons per minutes, these jobs are for 2 or 3 hour. That is alot of water to carry around. I am guessing is all customer water. (Correct me if I am wrong). They know that part

1. Yes, you can and should soft wash a roof. Using a surface cleaner is dangerous for the cleaning technician and it damages the tiles. 2. You should always pre-treat and post-treat, even when you think you don't need to. Pre-treating ensures a more effective clean, post-treating ensure your cleaning stays clean, longer.
hey I own a pressure washing company and I get alot of tips from your videos. strong work man and thanks but I just wanted to say that I fell off a roof last week amd hurt myself pretty bad. Will be out of it next 8 weeks. anywho please wear a harness when on roofs and don't make the same mistake I made

This time for the different reason of too small a market (NOT ubiquitous/everywhere in a locale like carpets in every American city or tile roofs in Florida and southern California) already with many competitors. Albuquerque--10% or less of properties with any lawn/grass whatsoever...and because having a lawn at all is already pricey and high-end, every existing lawn is already being serviced. I worked for a year in Colorado Springs for a lawn aeration and lawn care service that even did some landscaping, became a top aerator/sales and crew lead, and was offered by the owner to extend his business to Albuquerque, under a guaranteed salary using his equipment and funding. Colorado Springs is full of full-yard lawns AND at least half the population is well off because of so much government and institutional money (4 military installations and at least a couple large colleges in the city--all of which stay strong even in economic downturns), easily able to afford two $35 lawn aerations each year! I knew that with my skills I could eventually break into and turn a profit, even in the small, very competitive market in Albuquerque...but predicted it would take 2 years to build sufficient clientele and reputation.
The man offering me the salaried position already was barely scraping enough profit in Colorado Springs for his own family...mostly because he had 6 children, which is incredibly expensive. He was a good boss who made sure his people were paid first. He lost money on a landscaping job or two I helped him with (nothing because of me) and barely had sufficient aerating machines. So again, I figured he would run in the red to finance my salary, absolutely sure, at least the first year, if not likely the second...besides be out a full set of machinery and equipment, diluting what he had to work with in Colorado. I spent weeks manually researching the Albuquerque market. However, being an honest man, I was so sure it would take the minimum of 1 year, likely 2, before achieving profitability, that I so much thanked him for the trust and the generous offer, but declined, explaining to him the critical difference in lawn care markets between Colorado Springs and Albuquerque. It broke my heart and frustrated me, because I would have loved becoming his business partner and finally starting my own self-sufficient life....
But yet another day...I successfully started a great, expanding career in the last years, but out of a bad second marriage with now two bad ex-wives haunting and hurting me continually...I was pushed until I dropped out. This, my first ever career success, done on Career Plan K, my 11th serious and major/massive-effort career attempt--now stalled out for 2 years and counting, Career Plans A through J all failed. I will have to either hard reboot Plan K or pursue a new Plan L--and I'm not yet in position for either yet, needing to navigate and weather an avalanche of multifaceted abuse and storm from ex #2. I am human, not superhuman. And I am good, not bad, as both exes continue to treat and punish me. I made honest but serious mistakes in marrying and/or having children with either woman. Live and learn. I won't quit but it has been hard as hell and isn't yet any easier. It's the hardest thing to oppose women who wholesale lie to themselves and/or others and lack other integrity and balance!

One of my clients hired a reputable pressure washing company to clean her tile roof. This caused massive flooding around her chimney flashings resulting in nearly $5000 in interior water damage for a job priced at $1200. The company also refused to pay for the damage. Although, it is fun for people to watch, this appears to be a dangerous and excessively laborious method of roof cleaning when you could use a soft wash system which will get you the same results and a longer lasting clean using only a fraction of the amount of water and labor required to deliver the clean.

@Jcam Camarij If you dont know how to step you will break tiles, even if you know where to step you can break them if they are lightweight tiles.
@Jcam Camarij Well, if they are way too old, you will break them. But if they are like max 15-20 years old - than everything is ussualy fine (at least in our country with ceramic and concrete tiles). They are meant to step on them (maintanance of things on roof) but you should be careful.
More chance of breaking tiles and breaking your neck.... crazy.. try doing it on a 45° roof
Was just gonna mention that. Im a painter and I hate ceramic tile roofs. Always break one or two. I let the customer know that Ill try my best not to but its not a guarantee. Then again Im 240lbs

I've been a roof inspector for 5 years and ill my 2 cents on actually safe it is to be on a roof.
Many roofs in Florida are usually only about 15 feet off the ground and sadly most roofs don't have a real safe anchor point to even tie down into and also wearing a Harness is really only effective for roofs higher than 25' off the ground (2 stories and up) since the roof/core are usually longer than 25'.
As for the wet tile, the older the tile is, the more grip you actually get from it even when wet.
Most unsafe kinda roof are the glossy tile when wet, you'll slip on those without even trying to. Also ive only fallen off a roof once which was only a 1 story roof and I slipped off it backwards and thankfully landed in a way where I didn't really get hurt. Sure, roof work is dangerous but so are a dozen other things in the work of construction industry.
As for measures you can take to be safe on a roof with tile:
1: Know how to walk on it safely without breaking any tile
2: Have a good pair of shoes that have enough surface area on it that will give you the best grip for you
3: Know the Slope of the roof youre working on and the tile types, usually on most tile between a 3 to 5 slope roof is pretty safe but once you start getting into 6 to 7 slope roofs, that is when they can get unsafe and usually not accessible.
Beyond that, I've seen dozens of roof cleaning services like his all the time down here in Florida using the same or some older equipment on roofs doing it the same way he does.
We use long life line tied to something on the ground over the ridge depending on side we were working on...
You would think with today's engineers, architects and brainiacs, there could be a safety system designed for tying off safe in these situations. Even if only 10' - 15' above ground.
Though many people do get injured just working with 6' step ladders. Mostly because of user error.
But then again, look at how the engineers and architects still design those tall 1000' + towers with a large bulb that needs to be changed by someone free climbing the final 100' or so to change the damn bulb.
If the architects and engineers actually had to experience climbing and performing that chore, they would design something a bit different.

I used to work for a company washing and painting roofs. I didn't really go up on the roofs unless I didn't have anything to do around the shop. First job I ever had that paid me to much money. I originally helped start up the company and design some of the equipment and methods we used. I also took care of customer complaints but there weren't many of those. They did good work. They never sent out a second bill and they never had anybody who never paid.
Love to hear how honest, humble and hardworking this guy is. Great values. Wish him well 👍

Great advice buddy. I have pressure washed roof before but not like this man. I just you straight water with a pressure washer and it took me 2 days for $200 bucks. I am not a pro and I only did it because someone needed it done and couldn't get someone to do it.
Looks great man, I’d look into just soft washing roofs though. Let the chemical do all the work, it takes two to three applications on the roof to fully clean it usually but I believe it’s the proper way to clean any roof type(tile,shingle,metal).

Chemical cleaning is a lot safer and a lot less damaging on roofs. With pressure you strip the coating off these tiles. That’s why all professional roof cleaners soft-wash roofs. And yes I said all do because the ones that use a surface cleaner for a roof aren’t professionals.

@@tscott7345 Pressure on shingles damages them. Period. The chemicals used to clean roofs are biodegradable, green, and break down into salt and water. While you blast bits of roof off and their protective coating, opening the tiles pores which causes them to be more acceptable to bacteria and algae growth, the professionals with education and cleaning experience to disinfect the roof, keeping protective coatings on, and use garden hose pressure to truly clean, not just blast the big stuff off. I guarantee chemical cleaning will always outlast pressure cleaning on a roof. I guarantee your roofs will have algae growth come back a lot faster than the ones that are professionally treated. You dont clean roofs, you just blast the big stuff off, leaving the spores still and that causes them to grow back.... you dont kill it like a chemical cleaning would.
GF had this done on a shingle roof. Result was all the aggregate was blown away. The roof was flagged as an issue on the sale of the house and she had to reduce 10k on the house price. Sure it's not an issue with hard surface tiles.
No matter what. It's better to pressure wash those tile roofs in SW Florida than it is to install those tile roofs. Holy hell

I'm not an expert at all in clay tiles, but I'm assuming to tie in fall protection he would need to try and pop a couple tile free and reapply them afterwards.
If it was asphalt shingles and they are stuck, it's a matter of lifting a shingle up and screwing your bracket to the roof

@@batmansdad3195 usually accomplished with a ground anchor and long lanyard for the fall arrest harness on the opposite side of the house from where the work is being performed.

Most pressure washer use 2 to 3 gallons per minutes, these jobs are for 2 or 3 hour. That is alot of water to carry around. I am guessing is all customer water. (Correct me if I am wrong). They know that part

Pressure washing roof tiles damages the tiles, it takes the weather resistant top layer off the tile, be warned don't do it.

Can you spray a roof soft wash instead of using a surface cleaner? Also, what about pre and post treating/sealing?
Here most use normal spray heads, you just keep it pointed downward so it doesn’t blow water up into the roof space.
1. Yes, you can and should soft wash a roof. Using a surface cleaner is dangerous for the cleaning technician and it damages the tiles.
2. You should always pre-treat and post-treat, even when you think you don't need to. Pre-treating ensures a more effective clean, post-treating ensure your cleaning stays clean, longer.
