    The Roberts tramcars only had 10 years of use before being scrapped, only 2 has survived in two tram museums in Crich and East Anglia transport museum both in running order, I've been on both of them, very smooth ride, very comfortable seat, lino flooring and very light and airy upstairs with extra windows in the ceiling.
    They made a massive mistake getting rid of them.

      It wasn't a mistake it was a travesty: done to make people use the buses, cheap then, once they had a monopoly it went downhill.

  • @doravernon1511

    Everything had character then, including the motor vehicles, now most cars are just a 'silver' box on wheels, most beautiful buildings demolished for 'progress', pedestrianised but now there aren't any 'pedestrians', the iconic Hole in the Road filled in as "not safe after dark"! Who remembers the Goodwin Fountain, with its' coloured lights in the water, donated to the city by Sir Stuart Goodwin for the enjoyment of the people, taken away so long ago its forgotten, and now the Cascades are also turned off.

    • @Embracing01
      @Embracing01 3 года назад +2

      Everything's soulless now with a futuristic dystopian bland feel about the buildings and vehicles. Trains and buses now look depressing and soulless (as I said very futuristic like a scene from Metropolis or Logan's Run), everything's becoming automated, surveillance cameras are everywhere (supposedly to stop terrorism or crime - yeah right), smart roads and motorways (tracking where you are going), bollards everywhere particular in front of shopping centres, unnecessary road barriers, traffic lights, pedestrian crossings and signs. People walking around like robots with their smart phones in their faces, little human interaction. All deliberate IMO. Add the Covid nonsense where you can't do bugger all because the Boris says and everyone's walking around with face naps on. And my kids are going to have to grow up in this nightmare world.

      @@Embracing01 you are so right: yes it is now unrecognisable. Haymarket destroyed: first 'mistake' was to get rid of the fantastic Rag n' Tag, then bustling Dixon Lane fruit stalls gone, Snig Hill ruined when Bridge Street bus station taken away, Angel House Co-Op had the best Santa's Grotto with moving sleigh: restaurant with waitresses in black dresses & white apron, High Street ruined when the iconic Hole in the Road filled in, Fargate now dead, Chapel Walk just a ghost walk, The Moor with department stores finished, just empty megalith buildings no-one wants. Who remembers the fountains behind Debenhams? Wilson Peck mistake moving to Charter Row from Leopold Street, demolition of the Grand Hotel with loss of The Buccaneer bar, empty office blocks, yet they build more. All this BEFORE lockdown !

      @@doravernon1511 I grew up hearing stories of the Rag and Tag from my Mother. This is before my time as I was born in the 70s, but it makes me nostalgic for this period. It's criminal how the council bulldozed so much of the old architecture that can be seen here, especially at the top of The Moor., but also the old bank in Fitzallan Square. They finished the job the Luftwaffe started, and changed the feel of the city forever. Some interesting stuff came from the re development though, such as the wonderful Hole in the Road, the numerous underpasses, and the old Castle Market, all of which have now disappeared themselves, and which I miss.

    It is very hard to watch these clips without mentioning the ethnicity of the people that frequented the city back then as to some it will be nostalgic due to its lack of 'diversity'.
    I myself see a white society with some fondness due to my own ethnicity, although I did grow up in an an acceptant familily and one who has many many close friends (and family) that are not 'anglo saxon' white english folk.
    The Sheffield, and UK that I grew up in is no more, but the past is the past and I love these vids for the memories where life was a simpler way of life withought the complexities of worrying about the political correctness and white subdued life style that we have in this day and age.
    My own Gran had a black labrador called 'Blackie' that would not be acceptable today but it was not named in any predudicial way but becuse of its coulour and acceptance.
    I hope these clips help other non indigionous folk to this country understand where any 'potential' deep predudice may stem from. We are all different and our past in some way defines us all.
    This 'was' Sheffield. Today 'We' are Sheffield.
