  • Hall of Fame running back Barry Sanders tells Rich Eisen that he used to secretly play pick-up basketball games when he was playing for the Detroit Lions and that he had no problem dunking despite being only 5’8”, says why he’ll feel some personal satisfaction if ex-Lion Matthew Stafford wins a Super Bowl ring, and reveals how much joy he took in making defenders angry with his ankle-breaking jukes.

    GOAT of running backs hands down.. when you do what he does, with Scott Mitchell as your best qb ever.. it's not even close.. sorry Emmitt.. and it's not even close

      I always mention that when someone tries arguing the greatest running back. Out of all the offensive lineman he played with there was only 1 that went to a few prowbowls. The coaches made plays that would purposely allow the defensive end through unblocked to allow the tackle to get upfield. They did this knowing Barry would make the first guy miss.

      Absolutely, if he had the Cowboys Super Bowl line, he may have doubled his yards. It broke my heart that he never got a real shot at a championship. Greatest and most innovative back in NFL history.

      Not to mention Barry is the all time leader in negative yardage rushes. The entire defensive line was in the backfield before he even got the ball. Dude was a legit magician

      @@robertaveritt729 Offensive Tackle Lomas Brown was a multiple NFL All-Pro and Pro Bowler and so was Center Kevin Glover blocking for Barry Sanders in Detroit.

      I think Eric Kramer was the best Detroit Lions QB to play with Barry, at least he won a playoff game and helped them win two NFC Central Division Titles. Mitchell choked in his playoff appearances.

    Fave quote about Barry. When he was at Oklahoma State. Thurman Thomas was 1st string and Barry was 2nd string. Before the game against Oklahoma, OU coach Barry Switzer tells his defense "Whatever you do, do NOT hurt Thurman!!"

      I was actually at the Bengals game in the Silverdome that got him benched... his last 2 passes were picks... including a pick 6 in OT.
      People were tearing the Silverdome apart screaming for Mitchell to be benched after the game. I get it.

      @@Boondoggle_Mollywop I may be wrong, but I recall Barry stating Mitchell gives them the best chance to win or something of that nature. Maybe I'm making that up though. I just remember it being a hot mess with Bobby Ross.

      @@BobbyLips It was definitely a hot mess with Ross, but you also could say that about most lions coaches.
      I don't remember the Barry quote, but I'd believe it. The fans definitely disagreed that Mitchell was our best chance at the time though.

      Scott Mitchell wasn't the answer. He had one really good season in 95' and a good season in 97' but gagged in the wildcard game both years. I was happy to see him leave.

    Screw Barry Sanders....as a young fan I became a lions fan in CA. He retired and broke my heart. I'm forever a lions fan because of this dude. Now I got to deal with people asking me why I'm a lions fan. Saw CJ came in and got HOF. Hopefully Stafford gets a ring so that being a lions fan don't sting so much.
