I'm so excited that dev is getting excited about spatial audio.
It truly is the way it's meant to sound.
Nine Inch Nails With Teeth and The Downward Spiral in surround are amazing, everything Steven Wilson puts out in spatial, and special mentions to War Of Being and Watershed mixes.

22:18 this is such a relief to hear. I love ALL of your work but I sometimes feel that heavy devi gets lost in the mix of all of it. The idea of going "back to basics" is so cool.

Hi Devin. Just a quick encouragement from me before I myself are off to dump an ax handle. Do what you feel like, do what you want man, even if it gets five times more abstract than The Puzzle and Devlab, even if you turn into a professor in electroacoustics, acousmatics and ambisonics from Montreal. Well, more meticulous in abstraction or not, just as long as you listen to yourself and no one else, that’s a win.
    Happy holidays, Dev.

Thanks for explaining Atmos - the 3d placement of sound is something I wanted to do since high school. It was driven by playing in the school band, and being able to hear the different instruments coming from different positions; it sounded so different to listening to a band... The sound and feeling from sitting in the middle of the sound was fantastic. Now to go down this rabbit-hole.
    Thanks Dev.

Dev, monolithic rainy Ocean Machine style metal is something I think a lot of us would enjoy, whilst waiting for The Moth. I enjoy most of the music you create, but I loved the heaviness of your Melbourne show and was so happy that you played so many Strapping songs. You said that whilst you enjoy the Strapping music it isn’t who you are anymore, but everything you have said and done in your life is still, and always will be who you are, and it’s important to embrace that fact and draw inspiration from the good and bad of our journey. Happy holidays everyone.

This was a juicy update. The angles you're working with in these simultaneous projects both sound like exactly what I come to you for. The wet and dry comparison between them paints a picture that I'm excited to hear.
I have no experience with really high quality production like what Atmos sounds like it's enabling you to find. I can imagine how that will feel once it's fully formed.
For now, enjoy the journey and I'll be hanging out for when it's ready.

    • @dylanhutchens1805

High quality audio is life changing (for me anyways). My only grievance with Devy's recent albums is that they were'nt in hi-res (a step below Atmos) so I'm ecstatic about this update. If you're a big music-lover like me, it's worth looking into a good set of headphones and the amplifier and DAC or whatever you can afford. A little research and a few hundred dollars can change how you hear music forever in my opinion. At the very least, a good set of earbuds. Just don't go crazy with it like I did lol its definitely worth it but my wallet still hates me :')

Everything sounds very intriguing to me. From the minimal desert, warm, beige color idea (sounds a bit like Ki to me,which I loved), to the simple more heavy focused stuff like Ocean Machine and Accelerated Evolution, which I also both freakin loved! I'm excited ☺️

Somehow you show up and articulate things I’m thinking about but way better than I could ever articulate myself, and with a stronger voice and bigger backing tracks!
Godspeed on the recovery. You have been an instrumental part of me dealing with my health challenges, emotions and loss of words for the last 1.5 years. Soundscapes have been a HUGE part of fighting Leukemia and, more so, the Leukemia treatments and mind altering drugs. I guess I must have discovered you in the early 90s without knowing it. My last purchased cassette tape and then first CD were both Steve Vai albums of the time. And I remember Vai from the late night shows of the day. I rediscovered you and Vai’s more recent works pre pandemic around 2018. Your quarantine concerts were great during that isolation where I wasn’t quarantined , rather an “essential worker” being micromanaged by Zoom, but even more so, the Christmas quarantine concert ( repeated before Halloween of 2022) and Puzzle profoundly helped me big time with isolation and thoughts of doubt in the hospitals.
Happy Merry Christmas to you too. I’m excited to learn more of Atmos recordings. Description conjures up throwback memories to my friends ‘s dad’s old reel to reel quadraphonic listening days in the late 70s which I had only limited exposure to and really curious how it will sound with just headphones or require building a small setup at home or say in a medical facility MRI machine!! 😎 🤣 🤔

I'm finding these updates surprisingly really relatable. It's familiar thought processes. Over-analysing, self doubt, realising you're thinking way too hard and you're making the simple too complicated for the sake of it.
Also, I knew of Atmos but I didnt quite get it until now you explain the instruments aren't fighting within the same bandwidth. So cheers for that, interesting stuff.
    Merry Xmas! 🤘

I have been working on learning Atmos for a while now, and I see this popping up everywhere about everyone having thoughts about it. I was just talking to my wife how people in the metal community kinda of hate on new technology (i.e. amp modeling) and how everyone acts like they never said anything negative about it. All that to say is thank you for your positive outlook on this! I have been enjoying the process as well!

I love the discussion about atmos. I'm a drummer and also an audiophile and i still use 2 channel to this day. while I do have some subwoofers, i am running a pair of subwoofers with some magnepan speakers. They have to be very tight and servo controlled. I love it when audio is full bandwidth in the front 2 channels. , no LFE. That way, I get to decide what to do with the bass, and I can opt to use crossovers and what not, but I prefull bandwidth to the front left and right channels. I love the super low frequency add-ons. if you put full bandwidth to the sides or rears, Unless it's a theater or high-end system most home listeners aren't going to be able to handle low frequency everywhere. So as far as the ultra Lows go, dump it all in the front. That's just my .04 cents (inflation).

Great update Dev. It mostly went over my head with the Atmos stuff but what stuck is when you said… this is the way it should have always been… or something like that and yes… I get a little time off, 4 days. Same with New Years. Plus, my employer was generous again this year. Last year I spent 4g’s to mic up my drumset and get a simple recording program. This year I’m gonna buy some merch I have wanted for awhile. One of them is The Puzzle box set.
So… Dev. I pretty much stumbled into your music. I’ve went through your podcasts through the pandemic and have really appreciated getting to know the WHY behind the music. A few years back on RUclips I stumbled across Transcendence and before that I stumbled across the idea of Sacred Geometry through a Tool fan magazine. This led to a year long rabbit trail of understanding what that is. HUGE topic.
I could babble about that but will just stick to saying THANK YOU for sharing your original podcast series and also this new series. Something resonates pretty strong. Thanks again Dev. Blessings on you and yours man. 💀’s and🌈’s- Waymesie

In the home theater world with atmos. Most theater rooms run dual subs as it gives a more even response across the room and usually kills off the nulls in bass that tend to happen in a room with a single subwoofer. Chased a dead spot on my room for years with the bass and once I set up dual 12 inch subs vs a single 12 , the dead spot disappeared

A good rule of thumb with pain meds, especially the addictive kinds, is if you can manage without taking them and it's not a something you have to take as part of a treatment definitely do without. There's all kinds of healthy things with pain management without developing any bad habits, holistics and mind over matter meditation type stuff. Hope you get well soon, and enjoy the Holidays! 🎄🎁⛄❄🌟
Also glad to hear whenever an artist has a creative breakthrough with an idea that seems to find it's place in that creative puzzle of ever changing and shifting forms. That's the way I always do it, when it fits somewhere and instantly feels right you know that's where it goes. Some things take a bit of time to get there but it's often times a mosaic of a bigger idea that you don't quite know what the picture is until you step back and realize "Oh! That's what it's about" Then it's free to develop into a language that has a voice. And sometimes that inner voice dosen't say anything particularly mind blowing, just wants to enjoy a bit of good weather, appreciate the beauty in it, and knows that's what you needed right now. I think the best kinds of art are like that. Put it in music form, and well, now you have something. A moment worth going in that snapshot of life. 😊🤘

If i'm parsing this right, it sounds like you have The Moth, this desert aesthetic project, and this simpler heavy project all going from this writing process. It'll be interesting to see how that all shakes out and i'm very excited for the simpler heavy thing because the themes you've mentioned have been where my head's been at for a few years now.
