The vocal placement is very reminiscent of Bullets and felt very nostalgic as a long time fan, it has elements from most of their albums that make it sound unmistakably MCR, I love it
Talking with friends - after all the hysterics had subsided ofc - we came to the conclusion that this is a really nice kind of...round-up of their discography? There's the Danger Days and Black Parade feel of the opening, and then the way Gerard's voice sits in the first half of the song is really what you'd expect from Bullets, where the last two minutes is so incredibly reminiscent of Three Cheers that it felt a little like being punched in the chest on a first listen. It feels, honestly, like a really nice sign post, and a great launching point for more new music - fingers crossed!
at first i thought yea not the greatest production , but now after listening so many times, the vocals are perfect for the lyrical theme of the song, the feel they are after … this song is sad but that pre chorus is so damn uplifting , this makes me so emotional
It's refreshing to hear a song like this. Don't get me wrong, I love the clean, noiseless rock/alt-rock/pop-rock stuff that bands/artists like Palaye Royale, Cassyette and Steven Wilson/Porcupine Tree are putting out, but it had been a while since I heard something so just earbleedingly distorted...
Seeing someone pull out Palaye Royale and Porcupine Tree in the same sentence just threw me for a loop ngl lmao!!!! I am just curious how you are relating the two in any way or what related musical camps you're putting them in?
oh i would LOVE to hear cassyette do some messier distorted stuff her voice is so cool (check out her king for a day cover on tiktok) i wanna hear more of it in her songs!! i think behind closed doors is the closest to that vibe rn??
I love that Gerard's vocals are a little more buried in the mix. If this does end up being the lead up to a new album, this definitely feels like it would've been a deeper cut where in the narrative the world is just collapsing around the lead character. And the lyric "you must fix your heart" has had me in a strangle hold ever since I first heard the song
I freakn LOVE the music being front and center in this. The guitar in this is so powerful, and haunting. I actually wish I could get this with JUST the music. The crescendo it builds to literally had me tearing up the second time I listened to it. Now it's my favorite part of the whole thing.
fully agree! the way blake was absolutely cheesing whenever Ray's guitar kicked in was exactly how i reacted, plus the tears too, lmaoo. it's so great to hear quality, real, skilled, inspired guitar work and mcr /knows/ how to deliver that.
There are not words for how this song makes me feel. One the one hand there's the sheer joy of saying "new MCR song" (I got into them after they broke up) but there's something more too. MCR got me through the worst of my depression, and hearing this new song just makes me want to live even more.
I've never really listened to them before but this was really cool! There's something to be said and deeply appreciated about how this type of music evokes certain emotions that the typical/popular songs wouldn't normally evoke.
Before you even said I knew we would agree: vocal placement isn’t my favorite. But man, it’s so good. I love the almost plodding verses and triumphant choruses. Edit to add that this almost sounds like something that could be on Metric’s Art of Doubt up until the breakdown. Maybe a weird connection but I feel like it has a similar feel (huge Metric fan as well)
I saw them live 2 or 3 weeks ago in Dublin and omg this song sounded amazing! His voice gave me chills and the band in general is in such a good place right now, I´m very happy for them.
Did you watch a live version yet? It sounds so good live. Can't believe that after what feels like a zillion years, I'll be seeing them live again in 3 weeks time. Can not wait!
Synths reminiscent of Danger Days. Piano very Black Parade-sequel. Guitar strings instantly slapped me with Demolition Lovers vibes (Bullets), cuz I feel like there’s an almost identical selection of notes within that specific track. Still trying to place the Revenge vibes within the song still, cuz I can feel it there. But there are vibes reminiscent of each album within the song, though the Danger Days vibes are definitely minimal from what I can gather. The vocals are extreeeeemely reminiscent of the Bullets album in terms of how they sound. Especially if you compare them to Early Sunsets Over Monroeville off that album. I think the distortion aspect is very much intentional, and as someone who loves all their albums and tracks, I love it. Lyrically, I am incredibly tempted to say Gerard’s lyric crafting has only elevated tenfold judging by this track… and his way of telling a story lyrically has always been amazing- even when simplified (ex: I’m Not Okay; I Don’t Love You; Cubicles) Last Note: We are getting a new album, and I’m extreeemely confident this will be the opening track.
You should do a reaction to all of their albums 👀🫠 even though you’ve listened to them a lot it would be cool to see you react and give your thoughts. I am huge MCR fan and I love your channel, too.
Nice reaction Blake. I came to the same conclusion about Sleep, but it's really the entire song in a way. You can hear individual parts, but it really creates a mood through a wall of noise as well. I watches you react to Muse a few months ago. That song was shiny and new, but now sounds so gimmicky, where I've listened to this song 50+ times and it's getting better each time. You asked for some ideas for reactions, I'd love to see you react to Fugazi (who made MCR possible by paving the way for "post-hardcore"). Song Ideas: Turnover > Repeater > Two Beats Off > Target > Break > Ex-Spectator > Long Distance Runner. I think you would live their sound and their production.
Bro. You don’t have any idea what I brought you my bullets was. This was a direct extension of their first album. About 9/11. His faded and drowned out vocals are intentional to give the same vibe as their first album when they were with eyeball records. Listen to bullets then listen to this. It is the finality of that album
This whole song was a great comeback. Like a fucking masterpiece. I feared that i would hate the song but we'll now I'm obsessed cause it's just that good
Blake i know you are a professional musician but can you plzz also react to animes like ATTACK ON TITAN, DEAMON SLAYER ... opening music plz!! You will love them for sure!
Dont forget Tokyo ghoul ,darling in the franxx., there are so many good ones in all genres Animes often really invest in their ost. You dont have to watch anime to appreciate them.
Honestly I couldn't figure out what the lyrics were without looking them up after the instrumentals starting getting heavy, thanks for your insights as a professional an I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought this.
A common critic of the song is the drumming and placement with singing, filters/mixing and drumming, which is so much harder then danger days. My first ever "real gig" was the black parade and previous to that had listened mostly to three cheers. Throughout my life I've always read alot of comics, Gerard who is mainly beside the band(s) a comic writer. All of the three critics above is so coherent to the story telling!
IM SEEING THEM NEXT TUESDAY GOT TICKETS LAST NIGHT AND THE HEAVINESSS LIKE NO WONDER MICHAEL CLIFFORD CALLED IT HEAVY IT SLAPS , And the heavy bits then that chorus
I'm not gonna look through all the comments to see if anyone else has said this or not, lol. BUT. Before this song came out, there was a video interview Gerard did with Aidan Gallagher (from The Umbrella Academy) where he talks about "Sleep," & how he loved making a "wall of sound" in it. He did the same thing with multiple songs on Hesitant Alien as well. At first, I wasn't crazy about not hearing the vocals more closer, but when I heard his explanation, it made sense to me. For this piece of work, he opted to make it this way & I can't argue with an artist's intentions.
Loved this video! Also don't know if you were considering it or anything but I would love to see a reaction to Harry Style's new album he just put out !! Would love to know what you think of it because it's got a different sound than some of his other stuff :))
It's not the vocal placement at all IMO but just how compressed the chorus is and how it truly doesn't punch as hard as it should, which is a shame because even Bullets songs sound clear and crisp on Spotify. The radio effect on Gee's voice in the verses is awesome and the verses themselves give a mad Portishead feel to me which is so endlessly sick. Breakdown gave me Coheed and Cambria, too. In general it's an evolution of the Bullets sound, with Black Parade chords, Danger Days production and that classic Three Cheers feedback ending ♥♥♥
i love your content so much!! i’d love to see you react to sth by the band “falling in reverse”, maybe a song of their album “coming home” or their songs “the drug in me is you” or “pick up the phone”
that song he mentioned that was inspired by black parade’s vocals actually ended up sounding kinda adam lambert-ey? not a bad thing at all, super interesting vibes
It would be very interesting to see your review of Jessie Ware album Whats Your pleasure (deluxe) and Jazmine Sullivan album - Heaux Tales (deluxe)! Both are STRONG and very fresh
So, im not that old of a mcr fan, ive listened and loved them for about a year and a half now, but ive really been listening ot them (and music in general) pretty ... religiously. And so the things i like about them and other music i like is that it doesnt feel cramped. Modern rap is something i hate because it sounds compressed, it sounds like it doesnt have range, its limited, cut-off and the room feels small. And thats one thing mcr has avoided. But when i listen to foundations of decay, i can get that feeling that its "cut-off" and in a small room. I think its because the drums sounds very programmed and that gerards singing is low in the mix. The drums i feel is too big of a focus. And so i get this "modern rap"-like feeling about it. So personally i think it sounds a bit... cheaper? And i am not a big fan of the song, though i can enjoy it at times. The end is better though, i like the chaos and the "mama" feeling i get at there. still not a fan of the drums but from there on out i like it better. I just often skip the song for the beggining and such. This is random considering what i just wrote but the part where he sings "you must fix our hearts", is my favorite, becuase he sounds free when he sings it, and i often ont like when singing is forced. I may be very wrong about this, afterall im a thriteen year old girl who have been listening to rock-music for only a little less than two years, mcr for a year and a half, and have been listening intently to pick out details in songs for about half a year. I dont expect anyone to think the same as me, but i am a person who have to spill all their very tangled thoughts if given the chance.

Hi Blake, loved the vid. I was wondering if you could react to some Florence and the Machine songs. Specifically how big, how blue, how beautiful the album. 🙂
Can you please react to Lana Del Rey - born to die album, or ultraviolence? Her music has influenced modern music soooo much, you’ll be amazed by hey lyrics, melodies, and production
Can I make a suggestion? I would love to see you react to Lord Huron - The night we met. It’s from the show 13 Reasons why. In my opinion a really great emotional song!

I was thinking about this! Also the melodies are sort of Black Parade b-sides/Conventional Weapons and man, I adore them for making this
the opening of this song, for me, SCREAMS demoliton lovers and the guitar at the end is sooo revenge era

That turn in the chorus around 3:01 is everything in a callback to 'I Brought You My Bullets'. 🤘😤

There's mixed reactions on this song. I liked it but I also had issues with the vocals. I couldn't understand the words most of the time.
