At a Tony Bennett concert several years ago, Tony told this little story before performing "Smile". He recorded the song as a single in 1959. Shortly thereafter, he received a letter from Switzerland. The letter was from Charlie Chaplain thanking Tony for giving his song "new life".

Wow Wow Wow ... I've watched & listened to this several times now. It's difficult to do so without shedding tears. This interpretation is beyond compare ... Allison Young has perfectly captured the melancholy optimism within Chaplin's melody & the lyricists' verse. Make way, admirers of Mr. Cole- Ms. Young has made this song her own!

Some people are tasteless, bitter, know nothings that know no better, they're the only kind that could possibly downvote something as sweet as this. Although, otoh, google/YT may take it upon itself to make sure to add some. I wouldn't doubt it for anything, & being the way they are now, I can't even allow myself to have trust in any of the numbers I see without wondering if they're used to manipulate users to or away from something for all manner of reasons. Google & YT is more of a private entity now than ever, they've censored, shut long time members down, etc. The internet is a huge place, yet somehow the vast majority of people have been herded onto the very surface of it, with most using google as their chief browser, search engine, video viewer (via YT), etc. I recall when just less than 5 years back YT seemed to be far fairer, offering far more freedom of expression than today. EDIT: for a spelling error, phrasing.

Chaplin wrote the music somewhere around 36 I believe, Turner and Parsons wrote lyrics to the music in 54 ..... The year I was born.

beautiful, gorgeous rendition... in a way, hauntingly reminds me of one of the sweetest, most poignant movie moments from one of the movies with perhaps the best inclusion of great songs ever; 'my girl 2'. seriously... listen and look at the 'mother' singing this classic, and this young lady singing here... there is something... charmingly beautiful eyes... overwhelmingly similar voice... haunting...

You do the best ukulele I have seen on U tube. My grandma gave me my grandpa banjo uke in 1945. Been playing ever since. Singing on the band and football bus, lots of campfires in the mountains and beach. Once in a while you find a voice you can back up that knows words and carry a tune. Otherwise you get used to being background for the talkers. But, they always remember the event and ask you go join and bring your uke.

Allison, you have an extraordinary voice. It takes me back to the torch singer era, and you have the look from the '40's that matches your beautiful voice. You have all the all the vocal mechanics down pat and your interpretation is exquisite. Best of all is that you sing from your heart; you have the passion lyrics like this require to produce a performance that makes the listener's hair stand on end, something you have to be born with. I'd like to hear you sing You Belong To Me, the Jo Stafford version. Jo's voice has always been the gold standard and you can get there! And BTW, exceptionally nice ukulele accompaniment.

When I was 5 years old I got hit by a car, and had to spend 2 weeks in the hospital . I was sad and in pain with a cracked dislocated hip, They brought me out to see my family in the playroom. I spent the whole time in my moms arms, and this song came on with Nat King Cole singing it. My dear lady you have touched my heart with this song, thank you, makes me cry ever time I hear it.
