  • We are now more than 350 miles into walking the Appalachian trail from Georgia to Maine (2,190 miles). In this episode, we walk into the Roan Highlands in North Carolina where I meet “Plan 9” who talks about his mother and Elvis Presley.

Hello you! Love the narrative, Derek. I look forward to every episode. I have hiked some of those same trails, only in much smaller sections. Would love to thru-hike the whole trail someday, but my age may prevent it by the time I have enough time to do so. So for now I am living vicariously through your journey, and loving the bits of wisdom you are sharing. And this episode is probably my favorite so far. Keep up the good work and the encouragement we are all gaining from your walk through the woods. Blessings to you.

The mountain in the distance as your video was closing is named "Grandfather Mountain". It looks like the silhouette of a man’s face looking straight up. You were only about 10 miles away. When you get to Mount Rogers, Virginia, look for Grandfather Mountain again. If the weather is clear you can see it from about 45 miles away. BTY, you're right. There are still some people in America with good moral values and strong honest convictions. Thank you from Alabama for sharing your adventure!

This journey I’m watching …it’s like reading a good book. I’m conflicted because I want to see each episode to see how it goes and what we learn. I want to share the laughter and the knowledge. I want to see how it all turns out. Yet, I do not want to see it end.

This episode made me very emotional. I love the cloud analogy. I think you need to screenshot that and print it out as a keepsake with the saying on it. Brilliant videos. I'm really enjoying watching you walk the AT. I'm secretly hoping you do, safely, encounter a bear, though.

Its not coincidence, the point is you always give and recieve something. Strong and lovely episode, very nice buddy.

Decooooo what about making a film program series for netflix. Dont film each day as a day. Think about a showcase of highlights. Introduction explanation. Different points of view. A middle where you look forward and back. An end where you look back and forward. And a sum up where you explain what happened to you that we didnt see. Dont get carried away enjoying yourself. This is a step to the future. This is your future. This is the future this is now this is life. This is you. You are the future. Iife is life. Breath in and out and repeat. Love you. Ps enjoy the a.t too much every minute of every day....❤❤❤

You made remember, "America, the Beautiful" is not the outliers that get hyped and sensationalized in politics and media. The outliers get attention and are quickly bought with our emotional energy even though they will pass. The lovely, pure, and beautiful are deep, spiritual, and lasting. Thanks and God bless!

"That there, that cloud, that's your problem. In the grand scheme of things, that cloud is your problem. It might even be gone tomorrow. Either way, it's not going to last. This too shall pass". Holy God" What magic in the moment, Derek.
As always, this is another stunning piece, weaving a beautiful narrative and a story of the people you are with, yourself, and the journey's landscape together into such wonderful storytelling content.
You have been a key inspiration for me to have a go at the Wicklow Way. As a somewhat unfit, overweight 54-year-old, the training is hard, but I am aiming for this Autumn. Did 11k in Crone Wood last weekend with a backpack of water and books in training.
What sort of weight are you carrying?
Lastly, Is there any chance you might cover how you manage to edit and upload such incredible content on the fly from the AT?? Its staggering!
Touching some wood here in Dublin, that you continue to travel injury and pain free....

Elvis was born in Mississippi but I get it, I do, and I’m sure his mama won’t mind because his intentions are true. I’m spreading some of my mother’s ashes myself this weekend on a trek to the middle of nowhere Iowa so she can be with her people in a cemetery holding several generations on that side of my family. Thats where she belongs, and that’s where his mom belongs, and Elvis was a Mamas boy too. May we all honor the journey.

It's funny how much I say, "This too shall pass" to my daughter, who has two children under three years old. When she has tough times like both ill at the same time, I remind her it shall pass. I was a single mother most of my kids' lives. It was what I said to myself to get through the tough times. You're very inspiring. I do feel a bit sad when your video is over, however.
