@@KIMLYSTEAR thank you. namjoon is a genius. Truly, he has so many layers to his music that it becomes fun to try to break down and decode his thoughts but that's my not-so-little interpretation. :)
Kim Namjoon is RM's real name. "But Namjoon" or "But Kim Namjoon" is a phrase used in the k-pop fan community to defend their faves at the expense of Namjoon's reputation. They bring up his past mistakes to redirect criticism directed at their fave idols. btw thank you for the reaction!
thank you so much for genuinely praising BTS’ (and RM’s / namjoon’s) lyricism and artistry! seeing you enjoy their music is so fulfilling to me, knowing you and them both share a love and admiration for music. they are definitely more than “just” a kpop group, and i just love how you’ve dived into them (and their discography) so deep without any bias whatsoever. your breakdowns are absolutely amazing, keep up the good work!
The triptych in this album with each rapper taking a different part of Jungs Map of the Soul in their own style is one of the best things the rapline has done. They also ask and answer questions from one song to the next like a baton hand off. I love RMs style here so much he addresses such deep ideas with such a fun style.
All the BTS members real names to help you, Knox: - Kim Namjoon (RM) - Kim Seokjin (Jin) - Min Yoongi (Suga/Agust D) - Jung Hoseok (J-Hope) - Park Jimin (Jimin) - Kim Taehyung (V) - Jeon Jungkook (JK)
Knox: added FYI note to this, if you watch a BTS live performance, you'll hear the fans repeateadly chanting until they start singing. The chant is their real names in the above order and BTS after saying JK's name.
Thank you Knox. I really needed to see an actual rapper react to this song. The last reaction I saw to this song, the guy said RM's skills as a rapper are on a beginner level.
I‘ve been a fan of hip hop for years and I always see people try to downplay BTS as rappers. It’s so frustrating. I’m sorry, but if everyone were fluent in Korean and could also pick up on the double/triple entendres, they wouldn’t say sh*t like that. You can hear that they can flow and rhyme regardless of the language 🤷♀️ Thank you Knox!
Who said that? I'm flabbergasted. I know there are so many rappers out there, just as there are so many singers, but what the BTS rap line brings to the table is irreplaceable. Whenever I see those types of "critics", I just leave. I don't like, I don't dislike, I don't even comment, I just leave coz it ain't worth my time. It's one thing to say that someone's artistry is not to your taste, but it's another thing to discredit their actual skills. There are a bunch of artists that I don't like personally, and that's unavoidable. But this doesn't stop me from recognizing their great points. And I believe no one is obligated to commend anyone they don't want to, but it'll be a much nicer world if they just shut their mouths and move on, instead of shitting on people and their life's work.
@@Maltymalt2025 This guy was just a jerk. He then said that Joon needed to redeem himself to prove he was worthy of leading the group. It was infuriating. I really appreciate the way Knox breaks everything down, and when you hear him point out the specific skills involved it is really cool. I have been into hip hop for 23 years, and I could pick out the technical skills of the BTS rapline from the start, so it bothers me when someone who thinks they know everything goes after their skills like that. It always makes me feel better when a rapper who is actually extremely skilled, like Knox, points out those technical skills.

When he eventually did react to it, I was sorely disappointed. I was like "Wah-"🤨 But I chucked it up to having different musical tastes. But then, the way he talked about Joon and this song just wasn't it. It's no wonder I haven't ever gone back to check on any other new reactions from him. 😂 After watching his first few reactions, I knew that if I signed up, I won't be getting quality breakdowns like this, that it'd just be him commenting on the songs that had his preferred vibes RUclips recommends me his stuff every now and again, but I respectfully declined 😂
I can't believe you get RM this much. You are amazing and I love you for appreciating what RM has. He is more and I hope you go deeper. I enjoyed this reaction more than anything ❤❤❤❤
Great observations! But according to Jung, the Ego (how we see ourselves) is also a false or incomplete view of our true selves, just like the Shadow (what we hide from others) and the Persona (what we show to others). All three must be accepted and embraced in order for a person's sense of self to be in balance. If we rely too much on any one of the three - or reject one, we will have a skewed sense of self. That's the message in the album "Map of the Soul". The shadow and the persona must be integrated with the ego for emotional happiness. If we think we know our true selves, but we have not fully accepted our persona and our shadow, that "true self" we think we are is not true at all.
This might be random but every single one of these lyric analysis videos you do for BTS makes me wish I had been in an English or literature class with you! The way you analyze and break down the lyrics is absolutely top notch.
I really appreciate how you analyze every song you listened to. It is very refreshing to see a someone who have a deep understanding of lyrics, music production and even the MV. And you really articulate it very clearly to your audience. RM's lyricism is really something else. And the meanings to his songs can be interpreted in so many ways. That's why I love BTS! BTW, his name is Kim Nam Joon.
BTS have album , MAP OF THE SOUL :7 They expore a lot of parts of psyche there. Persona is intro for the album. I encourage u to go through whole album. I think u reacted to one more song from the album UGH Please go through whole album
Of all the incredible solos from BTS, this one is my favorite, and this is a great reaction to this masterpiece. RMs skill as a rapper and his intellectual lyricism shine here, and the line "But I'm not embarrassed anymore, this is the Map of My Soul" makes me emotional every time I hear it. Their growth as individuals and as a group is unbelievably heartwarming and I love witnessing others appreciate it as well. Thanks for a great video!
for me with persona and shadow I realized that suga's shadow is his greed and RM's is his self doubt (these are also super reflected in their solo work with d-2 and mono especially)
Yes Knox! Map of the soul by Stein based on Jung is EXACTLY the theme of their album... And the album starts with PERSONA then it goes with all the stages in order like the book. The album it's their journey facing and accepting the different sides of themselves. What a dope concept! 🔥
Another great reaction, I’m joining your Patreon. You deserve it! You truly are an amazing reaction channel. At first I dismissed BTS too, as just a bunch of pretty boys, and boy am I eating my words. I’ve never seen artists like them. What’s even more wild is that these are the same men who are on Run BTS! It’s insane!
I just can never forget how i listen to this song at my very first time, this song put a pretty high standard for me to start the whole series of map of the soul album, im super excited and makes my heart beat when listen to this beat and his on fire rapping (nonstopable rapping till the song ends which is so dope, how can he just keep rapping and no rest in the whole song), the lyrics is so deep and i always feels like getting a lesson when i read RM lyrics and music
Your knowledge knows no bounds and you are the 🐐 reactor. I’m really impressed because and even though you said you were tired, you still smashed it. Really appreciate what you said about RM and BTS. They absolutely don’t deserve the negativity they get. It all boils down to jealousy and capitalism at the end of the day. Ostracised from both Kpop and the US industries lol - that’s fine. They’ve always said music first, charts second and that’s how it should be 🙏
When you said isnt map of the soul a book I freaked out! You know so much! and BTW map of the soul will be relevant to the BU, so it's cool that you know the idea of what it is.
Seriously Knox, you are incredibly smart as well 🥺😳 Like the way you grasp their lyrics with reading them only one single time and almost always get what we know BTS tried to convey with them always impresses me so much!!
People ask why BTS is sooo popular and I think you just gave the answer. BTS knows how to create ART from all the questions, the darkness, the shadows...
Haha I don’t know who to be more in love with right now :D with rm because wrote this song or with you because you understand this song!! This was great, he’s such a philosopher, it’s incredible. Next you have to react to suga‘s Shadow and then J-Hopes’s Ego. Then you have all the parts of Jung’s theory :)) It’s such a clever concept for an albuuum ahh, I’m screaming
"There's something that raised me up again every time. The first question, the three syllables of my name and the word 'but' that should come before any of those" I think he mean "but who I am? Kim Nam Joon"
i absolutely adore how you immidiately picked up on the jungian concepts lyrically speaking, were able to aknowledge the type of style he was going for instrumentally and praised his cadence and flow as well. it‘s almost like you being a proper mc helped you see it from his perspective. this is why you‘re goated!
I love RM's wordplay and how he can lyrically blow most ppl out of the water..💜 agree with you Knox, almost gotta be a college graduate and a deep thinker to truly appreciate the lyrics💜💜
i just wanted to mention the "i'm still not so sure if i'm a dog or a pig" line in 2016 a government official said that 99% of south korean people were just like dogs and pigs : "Na Hyang-wook, head of the Education Ministry’s policy bureau, put his foot in his mouth while he was out for drinks, saying, among other things, that 99% of South Koreans have no ability to move up in the world and can be treated like animals - simply fed and kept alive." (Los Angeles Times) i didn't see any comment mentioning it and i feel like it's impossible to understand that line without knowing this. just like the "but Kim Namjoon" thing, if you aren't given the context you can't fully appreciate the lyrics. anyway, amazing reaction as always, i can't help but be impressed everytime i see you analyze their music, it's like your brain was made for it.
As someone who just recently learnt the "But Namjoon" thing on Kpop Twitter, I just understood the "the three syllables of my name and the word 'but' added before" line better and suffice to say I am BLOWN on a whole different level. 🤯🤯🤯
before i knew this channel, everytime i wanna see bts reaction i should find more than one channel. 1 for someone that talk about lyricism, then i'll search another channel that talk about production like music, the beat, instrument, etc, after that i still have to search another channel that talk about visually like cinematography, the mv quality, etc. not only that, i should search another one that talk about the concept and theory. sometimes i search for the choreography if the song have it. BUT AFTER I FOUND YOU i just surprised bcs you TALKED about all of em. production, lyricism, visually, concept, meaning, and the theorys you bring them all in HERE just like one package and im so so happy that i finally found you! mad respect for you bro
You have no idea how many hours I'd listen to you talk about music and dissect it. If you ever have the interest/time to dissect full albums, please keep BTS in mind. I feel you'd love the message they try to convey from intros to outros in all their work. It is such a privilege having your perspective and insights on their music. Thank you for your brain, Knox!
This beat is sampled from one of their very early albums. They like to sample their own music sometimes which is cool, but this also this fits in the whole 'Map of The Soul' exploration. Talking about your past self etc
Jung's explanation from you on this reaction makes me adore you more. I always love how you react some musics so detail and imho 'on point'. Really appreciate and love it.
Felt like you really resonated with the message in this song and it helped you (along with that insane brain of yours xD) to do an incredible breakdown! I loved it. RM has many more (as do BTS). Hope you will continue on this journey. Thanks so much for this man.

This is an old video but i only stumbled across your channel yesterday and has since binged on quite a few of your BTS reaction videos and man, i have to click that subscribe button. Thank you for always taking the effort to analyse and read into BTS' messages in their music and actually appreciating their craft because a lot of youtubers don't. We're going on a hiatus (till Jin discharges from military and possibly releases more solos) since the remaining four will probably be enlisting this Dec but i look forward to new reaction videos from you when the members slowly come back and regroups in 2025.
What a great job you did here! It's amazing how you always get everything they wanna pass to us, every message, every sign. I can easily see that you and RM are similar in a certain way. I loved it, i truly appreciate your reactions.
The line with the three syllables and then the word ‘but’ is like Rm saying that people use him a lot to compare. The three syllables mean his name “Kim Nam Joon” and with the ‘but’ it’s like forming a sentence to compare or use in another way, “But Kim namjoon…” The banner hanging at 12:54 is his name spelled (the three syllables)
I love the journeys and inspiration behind their songs and albums! Thanks Knox. You’ve commented on his cadence control here and before, and it’s interesting the certain words or syllables he accentuates in this song to give more depth. Definitely a deep soul. His solo mixtape from 2018 is incredible and very philosophical 💜
RM was talking in an interview and said he didn’t have enough time to spend with Kim Namjoon. He’s been RM since 2010 when he joined Big Hit . I absolutely love BTS I’ve never heard a group like them and I was born in 1963 . Namjoon is an amazing lyricist , I feel sorry for all the shit he’s been getting since BTS debuted . The But Namjoon is all you have to look at to realise what hate he receives. I love your breakdowns , keep the videos coming please. Love from the UK Stay safe and Blessed 🥰💜💜🥰 I absolutely love
today I have been binge watching all his video explanations and i have been an Army for four years. though I knew what the songs meant, for and everything but the way he explains it more deeply, talks and tries to guess the theory about it and knows the value of it. I also do hope that he knows that BTS and especially all the rap line write their own songs like 90% even more than 95% of the time compared to all the other kpop groups. (some people should know whom I am talking about; especially the girl groups) so yeah there is no comparison of BTS to others. I am just not writing this to make other fandoms angry, I am expressing my own thoughts. that's how it is because BTS paved the way belive it or not..( and but obviously a few credits go to PSY and a few 2nd gen kpop songs but they didn't open the gets of kpop around the whole world. BTS DID!)
Every time I hear people talk about favorite song, top 3, top 5... I think I can't really choose, but if somewhere, somehow I have a top I'm sure this song is up there

He goes " I don't know man...but I know one thing... Yeah my name is RM." *He finally answers the question.* When he was younger he named himself "rap monster". After outgrowing that name later on in his life he decided to rename himself as "Real Me. RM." So when he writes the letter to himself, he is dismissing those expectations. He's responding to his own questions and the different versions of himself, good or bad. (CGI RM PERSONA) finally facing himself truthfully after dealing with so many other exterior influences.
It leads him towards the end where he finds truth and validates it. "Persona, who the hell am I? I just wanna go. I just wanna fly. I just wanna give you all the voice till I die. I just wanna give you all the shoulders when you cry." *That's who he is. Thats how he identifies.* 💜😌🙏
WOW, beautifully said!
@@KIMLYSTEAR thank you. namjoon is a genius. Truly, he has so many layers to his music that it becomes fun to try to break down and decode his thoughts but that's my not-so-little interpretation. :)
AMEN!
Damn this was the best reaction to RM. THANK YOU.
The triptych in this album with each rapper taking a different part of Jungs Map of the Soul in their own style is one of the best things the rapline has done. They also ask and answer questions from one song to the next like a baton hand off. I love RMs style here so much he addresses such deep ideas with such a fun style.
All the BTS members real names to help you, Knox:
- Kim Namjoon (RM)
- Kim Seokjin (Jin)
- Min Yoongi (Suga/Agust D)
- Jung Hoseok (J-Hope)
- Park Jimin (Jimin)
- Kim Taehyung (V)
- Jeon Jungkook (JK)
Knox: added FYI note to this, if you watch a BTS live performance, you'll hear the fans repeateadly chanting until they start singing. The chant is their real names in the above order and BTS after saying JK's name.
Also want to add that in Korea their surnames go first. So RM’s real name is Namjoon and his full name is Kim Namjoon.
@@KiahRenamae Thanks 😳 oops. Tend to forget that non Asian cultures don't do that.
This is why I stan. BTS are such honest and vulnerable storytellers.
Thank you Knox for this. This is why I'm subbed to you 💜
Thank you Knox.
@@DiogoChris Some guy whose channel name is Double DJ Reactions. Many ARMY called him out for being disrespectful, but he insisted what he said wasn't disrespectful. He is just a know it all jerk.
@@Indigo_gwen Oooo wait-
Hol' up a sec- 🧐✋
I think I watched that particular video from that guy.
And I'm not gonna lie, I was psyched for him to listen to "Persona" because I knew the kind of weight it carried technically and lyrically. When he eventually did react to it, I was sorely disappointed. I was like "Wah-"🤨
But I chucked it up to having different musical tastes. But then, the way he talked about Joon and this song just wasn't it. It's no wonder I haven't ever gone back to check on any other new reactions from him. 😂
After watching his first few reactions, I knew that if I signed up, I won't be getting quality breakdowns like this, that it'd just be him commenting on the songs that had his preferred vibes
RUclips recommends me his stuff every now and again, but I respectfully declined 😂
Persona, who the hell am I!!!!!! This song will forever slap 🤚🏾😌✨
Always 😩✋
Let’s go! You have started the trilogy now friend!
The best reaction to RM Persona that I've ever watched💜 A genius recognizing another genius🤗 Keep on going Knox, I love you!
Early!!! I was waiting for a reaction! Rm has Persona, Suga has shadow and Jhope has Ego and yes the album was inspired from the book Map of the soul
BTS have album , MAP OF THE SOUL :7
They expore a lot of parts of psyche there. Persona is intro for the album. I encourage u to go through whole album. I think u reacted to one more song from the album UGH
Please go through whole album
I'm seriously rooting for this channel. I've never seen anyone who goes into their lyrics as deep as Knox does.
Its so cool to hear you reactions. I wish RM to hear your analysis so he knows he is really heard. You are saying what we wish he could hear.
for me with persona and shadow I realized that suga's shadow is his greed and RM's is his self doubt (these are also super reflected in their solo work with d-2 and mono especially)
Yes Knox!
Map of the soul by Stein based on Jung is EXACTLY the theme of their album... And the album starts with PERSONA then it goes with all the stages in order like the book.
The album it's their journey facing and accepting the different sides of themselves.
What a dope concept! 🔥
Love your heartfelt reaction, dissecting every line of our philosopher RM the way he deserves :)
I love how you break down the lyrics while reacting to a song/video. You're also a great rapper and I've been listening to your music.
Ah man, I went nuts when this song first came out. This is how they decided to start off the album! What a punch in the face.
This is one of my absolute favourites 🥰 Such a fun sound but filled with so much meaning.
The questions that he asks in this song , in “ shadow “ song , suga answers them..
THIS IS SO GOOD, KNOX! Thank you so much for reacting to RM's "Persona".
One of the best in all music history, not just KPop 💜.
The intro melody comes from intro: Skool luv affair released in 2014
Seriously Knox, you are incredibly smart as well 🥺😳 Like the way you grasp their lyrics with reading them only one single time and almost always get what we know BTS tried to convey with them always impresses me so much!!
I love RM's wordplay and how he can lyrically blow most ppl out of the water..💜 agree with you Knox, almost gotta be a college graduate and a deep thinker to truly appreciate the lyrics💜💜
i just wanted to mention the "i'm still not so sure if i'm a dog or a pig" line
in 2016 a government official said that 99% of south korean people were just like dogs and pigs : "Na Hyang-wook, head of the Education Ministry’s policy bureau, put his foot in his mouth while he was out for drinks, saying, among other things, that 99% of South Koreans have no ability to move up in the world and can be treated like animals - simply fed and kept alive." (Los Angeles Times)
i didn't see any comment mentioning it and i feel like it's impossible to understand that line without knowing this. just like the "but Kim Namjoon" thing, if you aren't given the context you can't fully appreciate the lyrics.
anyway, amazing reaction as always, i can't help but be impressed everytime i see you analyze their music, it's like your brain was made for it.
Your breakdowns of the lyrics were amazing. You're a intelligent man.
I have waited for this reaction since Mic Drop. I can die without regrets now. Here is some ARMY love for you 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜
You have no idea how many hours I'd listen to you talk about music and dissect it.
I have been waiting for this reaction for ages😍
Jung's explanation from you on this reaction makes me adore you more. I always love how you react some musics so detail and imho 'on point'. Really appreciate and love it.
Felt like you really resonated with the message in this song and it helped you (along with that insane brain of yours xD) to do an incredible breakdown! I loved it. RM has many more (as do BTS). Hope you will continue on this journey. Thanks so much for this man.
Thank you for translating those lyrics because before I didn't understand them but now after listening to you its easy to understand them
Great review Knox - RM is such a lyrical genius. I love the complexity of his messages.
Wow. Thank you for that amazing analysis and wise words at the end. You are going to love Shadow! But I suggest the lyrics as well as the mv to get the full song
You really remind me how much i love this song. This song is just so good and the meaning is so deep and hits! Also your reaction is great i love it!
12:33 his real name is ‘Kim Namjoon’ it was the korean text that was on the banner
I have read essays written on this song. This song is a crash course into introspection and philosophy.
Omg you need to do Suga's interlude Shadow. I need that one properly broken down. This was perfect
The three syllables mean his name “Kim Nam Joon” and with the ‘but’ it’s like forming a sentence to compare or use in another way, “But Kim namjoon…”
The banner hanging at 12:54 is his name spelled (the three syllables)
I say it everytime bts is for the intellectuals 😍
Thanks for reacting to this, Knox. Appreciate your breakdowns and really delving into the lyrics, as always. And congratulations for BlackList!
my new years wish is for you to meet RM and share things about Rap and music and art.... I think you both will get along well
It is so much fun to watch you dig into the meaning and the message but at the same time able to appreciate the skill that goes into the music. 💜
No one can break down BTS, Suga or RM like you. You give their lyrics the respect they deserve and point out things easily missed. Great reaction.
Love from the UK
Stay safe and Blessed
🥰💜💜🥰
I absolutely love
Outro: tear and outro: her please! I gaurantee u will like it!
Yaaaaaaayyy lets go~~
Rockstar is 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
If you want to check Suga’s Shadow next please check the extended version
I loved this reaction. You are so intelligent I love hearing you analyze these lyrics.
today I have been binge watching all his video explanations and i have been an Army for four years. though I knew what the songs meant, for and everything but the way he explains it more deeply, talks and tries to guess the theory about it and knows the value of it. BTS DID!)
In latin persona means 'mask' and it was the one ancient theatre's actors put on during their performance
I'm glad i found your channel :) i love how u talk and how u think, greetings from Spain!!
RM is simply great! Thank you for the reaction.
And just to say that the beat sample is taken from an older song of theirs from 2014. So it also relates to their older discography
love your breakdowns so much!
Lovin this reaction as always.
I love your take on this. You are so intelligent.
Every time I hear people talk about favorite song, top 3, top 5... I think I can't really choose, but if somewhere, somehow I have a top I'm sure this song is up there
i love your reaction so much so much so much, truly
Sooo glad you are reacting to Persona ♡ you should check out the live performance on the MMA 2019, his presence on stage is just something else...
P.S. Congrats for Blacklist, truly a masterpiece album
Knox: cleverly breaks down complex lyrics
Me: Man I love that shirt! 😂😂
